If you make a H2O2 mixture for future use, don’t put it in a clear container. There’s a reason it’s in an opaque brown bottle; it reacts with light to break down into H2O and O2. You’re spritzing expensive water instead of an inexpensive disinfectant.

Bleach is the same way. Once hit with sunlight or mixed into a spray bottle for cleaning it is only going to keep it's sanitizing properties for 24hours. This is not only because of the exposure to sunlight, once it comes in contact with any organic compounds. Which is why they always say to clean any surface before sanitizing with bleach. Bleach also has an extremely short shelf life even before opening the bottle which makes bleach quite unreliable. Hydrogen peroxide also has the same problems. It begins to decompose before even opening the bottle. It decomposes slowly into water and elemental oxygen when exposed to light, and even more rapidly in the presence of organic or reactive compounds. But you can test hydrogen peroxides effectiveness by putting a little on skin and seeing if any bubbling occurs. If it does then your in luck. This is a very good subject I'm happy someone else has brought it up. This is why I no longer use bleach. In many cases it has already become inactive before you get it home from the store the shelf life is extremely short.

Additional tip for this great video: hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) rapidly breaks down into water (H2O) especially when exposed to light and when diluted. The disinfecting effect comes from the liberating of that oxygen, which leaves water. This so great in that it’s not toxic and leaves no toxic residue on surfaces, however, it also means that you must mix up these formulas right before using them, they don’t store for more than 24 hours, and I’d avoid using a clear glass container, too, as that contributes to rapid degradation.
For direct treatment of soil, not plants, I’m a fan of more sparing use with a sprayer stuck into the original dark brown container.

    • @mimiohnine

    • @juliejames6322
      @juliejames6322 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Ausy no, I dilute it, but I use one of the original brown containers in which to do it, and I only mix up what I’m going to use that day-generally less than 4 oz at a time, as any leftover will degrade into water.

    • @kathleenmurphy2379

@@lunacadence6050 it sounds your elephant ear plant is deficient in nitrogen and in magnesium. I would suggest you put a spoonful a teaspoonful of Epsom salts in a gallon of water that will help the leaves green up they need magnesium to make the chlorophyll which causes their leaves to be green. And a nitrogen deficiency is usually that yellow outline along the edges of a leaf. Also elephant ears be they alocasia or colocasia lose their oldest leaf as they're getting a new Leaf especially if they're deficient in nutrients. To make the new Leaf they take the nutrients out of the old leaf because they have to constantly grow. I have some videos on my channel from last summer wear I bought it up my elephant ears and my caladiums. I use a weak nutrient solution weekly on my orchids and then use the leftovers after the orchids soak on my other plants. The nutrient solution not only has some type of Miracle Grow with the first number the middle number the last number higher than the rest along with a Cal Mag solution called tell Magic... And in that I also have seaweed emulsion fertilizer some micronutrients Epsom salts and in the soil when I repot something I always put osmocote fertilizer and with it if I have worm castings that also goes in the soil.

I did this to my orchid but I used 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 2 parts water (watch orchid girl on TH-cam) -- I bought the orchid on clearance with droopy leaves that just hung over the side of the pot. I removed all the decayed roots, soaked it in the solution for 24 hours and then drained it the next day. Within 2 days the plant is nice and perky again. The hydrogen peroxide neutralizes the soil so you will have to change out the soil because it will be sterile, but it also kills bugs eggs and stops root rot in its tracks.
I treat all my Echeveria succulents with a hydrogen peroxide rinse straight from the box store so I don’t bring pests in my home and to stop any root rot going on. But with my Echeverias I saturate the soil in the pot and let it drain out right away. When it’s completely dry again, then I transplant it into new soil.

Thrips (by far ) are the hardest dang pests to get rid of.. to the point of insanity! It got to the point that when my plants got thrips I had to cut all the foliage off!😱 I know...tears, tears & more tears! But since the plant community has grown I’ve got some help on the demise of thrips and other pests out there that I could not get rid of without using tons of chemicals. Thank you for sharing the hydrogen peroxide ideas with the community! That helps really nicely & gives the roots a oxygen boost as well. Can’t do it often like you said but every once & a while is great for most plants! Thanks:)

Hydrogen peroxide is great.... I used it on a plant that had root rot.... The plant was dying out droopy dead leaves so i mixed up 1 OZ (2 TBS) of hydrogen peroxide and 1 QT of water and I didnt wet the dirt but I dampened the dirt with it then let it dry completely out and then used the rest of the mixture into the plant... The next morning the leaves was green and beautiful and looked so happy.... 😊 i was so relieved!!!! I threw away one plant b4 trying this that had the same problem before i tried this and now regret throwing it away! Do you know how long after using the peroxide i can give the plant food?

I personally wouldn't recommend using this for sensitive plants like calathea and prayer plants.. I used a very diluted mixture for treatment for fungus and fungus gnats on a red prayer plant and a syngonium. The syngomium was totally fine and free of gnats, but the prayer plant later developed yellowing/browning on the edges of a few leaves, similar to fertilizer burn. I think my mixture was much more dilute than 1:1, more like 3:1 (water:peroxide) Has anyone else experienced this?

This is a great suggestion. I just replanted to Pineapple Offspring. One of The Offspring had yellow leaves and it was very stunted. That was the reason why I repotted and I put it in a large pot. I'm concerned of using this peroxide mixture on a newly planted pot that has soil with fertilizer. Won't it kill the fertilizer and make it inactive? The other thing I need to search for in your files unless you can link it to me it's how do I know how big of a pot to put a plant in. I noticed your pot that you use the peroxide mixture in with a large leaf plant in a very small pot. I need a lesson on how to know the size of a pot for a plant. I'm so happy I found your videos

I always thought my house was too dark for plants but I found so many that are doing great after almost 3 months! I couldn't find a plant that seemed to be the problem so I sat out the catch bowls. Then I cleaned all my drains. I just today found the one plant that the gnats love. I'm going to try spray because I just watered it & I don't want other problems. I'll swing back around to let you know if I'm successful! 👍😁

Think I'll try the soaking method if I see any more gnats.

I spray neem oil a few days after I water on the top which I purchased a bottle on Amazon and followed instructions. I also bought sand and most of my plants have a top layer. I have some issues with the sand because I feel the soil doesn’t dry out and I get worried about root rot. I bought a water meter to check regularly. I did the dying out too and that’s hard bc I water on different days. I literally walk around with a spray bottle with alcohol, dawn and water to spray any I see flying around, tried the ACV too. It’s been a battle I think I’m finally winning. When I bring in a new plant I drench with the neem spray or water with water and peroxide to make sure. It’s been so annoying!! Once I feel the gnats are fully gone I’ll start removing some of the sand on some plants.

Hello Harli, thank you, this info is very helpful. In fact this is how I felt brave enough to us peroxide on my plants. I actually use it with my mouthwash every night too.😁💚🍀🍀🍀🍀
This is my DIY Critter Spray Recipe
1 Tbsp - Peppermint Dr Woods Castile Soap-
1 Tbsp - TeaTree Dr Woods Castile Soap-
    1 Tbsp- Neem oil
    1/2 70% Alcohol
    2 Tbsp Peroxide
    Fill the rest with water.
I made up my own recipe and I have eradicated mass thrip infestation and I have never really had spider-mites. The critter spray also keeps my cats away from my plants because they don't like the smell, I guess.
    My recipe
1 Tbsp - Peppermint Dr Woods Castile Soap-
1 Tbsp - TeaTree Dr Woods Castile Soap-
    1 Tbsp- Neem oil
    1/2 cup 70% Alcohol
** 2 Tbsp Peroxide (I've even used 3 TBSPs) (I use 3%) I get the peroxide and the alcohol at the dollar store which is good for me because I have so many plants.
Fill the rest of the container with water. I use Brita water that I have lowered the pH to 6. I use the 32 oz brown peroxide bottle and added a sprayer. Works great!!
I wash off the plant first because I'm also afraid of DIY critter spray direct contact burning my plant or its roots. I spray the critter spray all over the plant, leave the spray on for 15 min, then rinse it off. Then I wipe the leave off with a paper towel with a bit of Neem oil on it. The thinner leaf plants only 5 minutes.
The reason why I think it works so well is because I spray the critter spray once or twice a week around the perimeter of the plant and in the planter tray. I do try to avoid spraying directly on the plants, but as close as I can. Especially with plants that have water in the trays. I spray that 💩💩💩everywhere. I mean in the plant area. Well actually I also spray around the perimeter of my home when I get a lot of spiders or ants. I even spray in the back and around the plant area which really keeps them away. I started doing that because I had an ant problem. They don't like it either. That's how I killed all the thrip on my monstera's; they are notorious for thrip problems.
I'm not sure which is harder to get rid of, spider-mites or thrip. I also use a humidifier which apparently spider-mites hate.
I have over 75 + indoor plants that are super healthy and they are all in semi-hydroponic substrate (mostly Pons)...no dirt.
Thank you for the very helpful info.💚🍀

I got a practically dead fiddle leaf fig from a friend (by dead I mean the only thing left was a few healthy roots) and I’m using the hydrogen peroxide treatment on root rot in hopes of reviving it. Wish me luck!!

Great advice. I've never heard of this and I've been a plant nerd for over 30 years. Definitely makes sense. Thank you. 😘

Do you know if this will kill fungus gnats and their larvae (the little flies that live in houseplant soil)?

For the pests, i get 'Stall Dry' from tractor supply, its crazy expensive on ama on and only 12 dollars for 25 pounds at tractor supply... it has diatomaceous earth in it and that kills all the bugs by cutting open their exoskeleton... sometimes i mix it into my potting mix... but i always have a layer of stall dry on th soil top... i never have any bugs... I'm just sharing this as another tactic, not taking away from anything you've said.

I never use cold water on my plants... always “room /slightly warm” warm as or not shock the root system.

Hello Harli I have the Burle Max and I keep it near indirect light from a North facing window. I only water once a week in the summer and once every two weeks in the winter, plant seems happy with new leaf growth.

Hi Harley. I watched this video when it first came out and used what I learned. Worked like a charm. Now (March 2020) I am re-watching some of my favorite videos. Is it me, or do you only have one side finger nail polished?😂I have way too much time on my hands right now!😜😷🤦

So I microwave my soil to kill off what may be in the potting soil, does this work or is peroxide better?

    • @Tinaejs
      @Tinaejs 4 ปีที่แล้ว

That works too, or boiling water. Just remember it also kills off good bacteria as well (like when we take antibiotics and have to take probiotics after we get well) so top off with rich soil or compost (non-infected!) after treatment!

Just in time. I have fungus gnats on my ferns in my bathroom. I could not get mosquito bits from my local store in Australia. The store person said he has not heard of it :( Bummer! But I can get hydrogen Peroxide from the supermarket. Thank you very much sharing, Harli! You are glowing with your pregnancy! Congrats.

Harli first of all you are glowing and gorgeous ❤️congrats!
If you have yellow leaves that are a result of a watering issue that look sad but are still alive do you keep them? Can they come back? Sometimes if you cut them all your poor plant has barely any foliage left... I face this dilemma with a couple of my philodendrons arids right now
