Shadow Dancer and Spider-Man's names are the same (also Sega briefly had the rights to use Spider-Man, hence why some versions of this game have Marvel Comics mentioned), but sadly Batman/Devilman isn't named in the manual.

I forgot about the Rambo's, yeah, I thought I remembered those wrong while playing the emulator. I still have my original cartridge though, need to play that version.

Of all the bosses, they did have the rights to use Spiderman. It does appear on the credits. As soon as those rights expired they changed the sprites on future releases.
I remember this awesome game back then in the 90s, I couldn't believe you get to fight Shredder, mother brain, Daredevil, terminator, hulk, Rambo, Jackie Chan, Spiderman, morbius(bat creature from Spiderman) Godzilla, and even jiraiya(from Naruto) lol all in one game, truly a classic

It's not that the US version was altered, period. The altered US version is the second version. I used to have the original US release of RoS with the bosses intact.
They actually made him look *more* like Spiderman in this version. Apparently the Japanese version used more of a dark navy color instead of that bright blue.
I feel like this game doesn't come up in conversations about the hardest Genesis games very often when though imo it's one of the hardest games on the console. Especially the last handful of levels and bosses. Just absolutely brutal.
I've been trying to finish it recently, the bosses were destroying me.. (hence the visit here to maybe learn a bit from the pros lol). And I came in thinking the original Shinobi was difficult and thought having a health bar would solve all these issues.. XD
I beat this game and even managed to get the Good Ending when I was 10 years old. Tried going back to it a couple years ago and couldn’t for the life of me get past the dinosaur boss.

I agree. In which part of the game did you lose? Stage 7 is pretty hard (you know, the level in the docks), but when I reached the last boss, the girl ended always smashed. Never knew that you could stop the stone for a few seconds.

I finally found it...the game that kicked my motherfuckin ass as a kid. except I remember that first samurai boss with the red armor being different. I remember him being taller than that, like almost the size of the buildings, and with a pale color scheme as if he were a dead samurai. but this is definitely it. you don't mistake those special magic attacks.

You gotta admit though, it looks great for a 1989 game.
The soundtrack is still great. I just don't think the Genesis' sound has aged as well as other retro systems.

I've always been curious why the original Spiderman boss was black instead of blue. But when they were censoring the game, they made him look even more like Spiderman, but changed the Batman boss? What!?
Also I guess you could say that the Ninja Master was whipping his hair back and forth before it was cool. :D
