1st and 2nd stages were fun bcs it matched with Japan, other ones are meh, but that's 90's game, we had to expect ninja fighting either modern soldiers, aliens or other stuff
You see that a lot in games from Capcom, Konami and Sega from the 90’s. Also Taito’s Darius series. I like when they “flash” faster as they take more damage, almost every Konami beat em up from the 90’s does this.
One of my favorite parts of this game was the end art everytime you defeated a boss. Everything about this game was just immaculate from the music, stage design, and controls. One of my favorite ninja games of all time.
I don't know why it is, but I really love how the bosses were designed in Sega Genesis games like Shinobi, Contra, Castlevania, and Splatterhouse. The creators just weren't afraid to make the bosses as grotesque and intimidating as they could.
Just look how gorgeous and artistic that horseback stage is! The clouds, the swamp land and the mood. Sure games have better graphics, but their aim is realism. This is pure art. This is a cartoon/anime that you control! The music along with the art of the horseback scene is gorgeous!
LOL yeah, it's a kite. For a second I had to ask, wait there was a monster?@@megamegaO That stage is fantastic. Especially when it first came out. You only see the boss battles in this. The actual stages leading up to the bosses have their own flavor as well. I.E. THe stage before the kabuki warrior (the boss before the final boss) has a japanese castle that you climb, full of traps and it's own awesome audio track that plays to match. Really elegant and serene stuff.
I couldn't beat this as a kid, so I went back and finished as an adult. This was the first one in a line of games I've been trying to complete from my childhood, and I can say it was absolutely gratifying to do.
I never realized how OP the Shinobi in this game was when I used to play it. The guy is defeating friggin demons, undead Samurai, four-armed demons, war boats, battle mecha, hawkmen, and FUCKING MECHAGODZILLA armed with nothing but a couple shurikens (kunai, actually) and some blades.
I always loved how the game went from a Ninja fighting in feudal japan to robots, mutants and demons whitout warning, took me off guard as a kid since this was the first shinobi game I played...
Gregory Edwards maybe Mecha Godzilla and the fake Balore, the giant one handed tumor-headsplosion looking creature and the corny phoenix demon and hair tengu guy and super ninja android
This game is random in a good way, it's like someone at Sega just walked into the office and shouted out into middle of the bull pit "hey we need level ideas for our ninja game" "Horse riding kite level" "brains in jars on a conveyor belt" "giant mechs fighting in the ocean" great we will use all of those.
@@kevinrodriquez6546 According to the backstory, it is a "failed experiment" that was discarded by the laboratory above, thought dead. Only it wasn't a failure, and it actually survived and continued to evolve and grow in the sewer.
I wish Sega remembers Joe Musashi one day and makes a new Shinobi with him starring again. I mean, Hotsuma is cool and all, but the OG Shinobi guy is top tier.
What's more fun is playing with melee attacks only on both Shinobi 2-3 and Shadow Dancer. I loved playing that way, much more challenging! The second level on horse with the enemies disembarking from their giant kites is awesome ninja stuff, my favourite! What a shame there was no Shinobi Ninja Gaiden-style beyond the one on PS2. That's a franchise ripe for a resurrection!
It's interesting how most of the bosses in this game are traditionally pattern based, and can be easily beaten through memorising their attacks, but the final Shadow Master is different. He has far more moves and is much less predictable than the others, meaning you have to use everything Joe has in his arsenal to defeat him, you have a counter for everything he can throw at you, but you HAVE to be quick in reading and reacting to him. It's a cool, clever ninja duel, that creates a great, action packed climax to a great, action packed game.
That Body Weapon Boss is the scariest looking thing and level in the entire game. That boss gives me the creeps. If that thing was real, their would be a giant panic awaiting us all.
2:48 in my first time I fought the boss, I was very scared ... because his body was so big and terrible the boss on the stage ... after a few months I ventured to fight him ... so often I fight him, finally I was not afraid anymore to fight him ... so, very easy against it😂😂
Sega at their in-house best. I wish they were still releasing consoles now, it would help break up this Sony/Microsoft monotony. Shinobi is one of their best franchises.
I completed Shinobi 3:Return of the Ninja Master and I’m skilled at this by defeating enemies that worked for Neo Zeed a criminal organization run by the Shadow Master and completed seven stages and defeated the Shadow Master and Neo Zeed’s reign of evil had ended when some ship came down from the sky crashed and it’s battle had ended and amazing times I have with my life.👍💯🇺🇸
I know NINJA GAIDEN & STRIDER were always my 2 top most dearest NINJA games of all times, but SHINOBI is also a great memorable game, especially this one, shinobi 3, I still own it. :)) great game
I never realised how the POW Powerup was overpowered! I'm used to beat the bosses without it, and seeing how only a few shoots with the POW Shuriken already turns the bosses red it's quite a revelation! Hahaha
Indeed! And it would look even nicer on CRT screen with scanlines and all. The Mega Drive (Genesis) was the only system outside of the Neo Geo that had that genuine arcade look (resolution + graphics + sprites + scrollings...). See also Thunder Force IV, Streets of Rage 2, Contra Hard Corps, Eliminate Down, Alien Soldier... It's crazy because arcade gaming was the pinnacle back then yet the Mega Drive was the less expensive system of its time! Sega really did wonders during that era.
When I was little I used to play this game, the Hydra would give me nightmares and I couldn't go past the surfing level and I thought nothing could top the Hydra but now as I watch this and learn that you fight Mecha Godzilla later on makes me realize how wrong I was!
Nice work!! I always tried the running slash attack he can do. It worked on a good amount of bosses but I always ended up getting hit lol oh well it looked awesome doing it though!

Perfect! Превосходно!
yeah easy game
old classic easy game
This game is an actual masterpiece, look at this combat, the design, atmosphere is literally art, the bosses, the damn OST.
1st and 2nd stages were fun bcs it matched with Japan, other ones are meh, but that's 90's game, we had to expect ninja fighting either modern soldiers, aliens or other stuff
The OST is perfect!
even the sfx sound fucking awesome
@@qubek533 Actually I think they are not aliens, they are biological weapons.
controls are shit
I love games where enemies change colour depending on the damage they've taken
RABtoons
You'd love the Metroid series.
Old game design I miss

Even the more family-oriented games had bosses of that vein!
Just look at Alien Soldier! (Arachnophobia warning for one of the bosses)

Luigi Gaskell and then there is shadowdancer, which is basically the same game but you die after one hit.
Luigi Gaskell Um, excuse me. But that kind of stuff is standard ninja fare
sirFox oh cool
and surfing board xD
but the real question is: who would win a death battle shinobi vs strider?
I always loved how the game went from a Ninja fighting in feudal japan to robots, mutants and demons whitout warning, took me off guard as a kid since this was the first shinobi game I played...
That is one calm-assed horse.
... and pardon me for having bad flashbacks of Battletoads on that hoverboard.
Oh, I remember battle toads... Its like superman 64 level design.
Everything about this game was bad ass back in the day. The music, the levels, the bosses. Just too ill.
Gregory Edwards awesomeness. I'm ready to time travel again. i have this sega collection on my ps3 why can't this be updated to 4k for the ps4.
Dude can you imagine? It would look so amazing. What a legendary game.
It sure was man! =D

I wish a Japanese studio would produce a Shinobi anime, based on this game. It’s got awesome bosses.

i agree, but they would try to remove mechagodzilla in order to prevent lawsuit.
And The other shinobi games have even more copyright infringement than this one
This game gives some Naruto Shipuden vibes.
Tifa Lockhart: [beats up mech with bare hands]
Joe Musashi: Alright, hold my sake rookies...

Absolutely love this game! It’s close call between this and Shadow Dancer for my favorite old school ninja games.
FLAWLESS most impressive and fine display of graphics one of Sega's strong designs. Thank u for sharing 🤘
1:30 that running horse pixel art animation is TOP!
Woah!! and that Castlevania style ending... I never expected that! :o
