    Wow, as a native Chinese speaker living in US for 10+ years, I love watching this channel--it reminds me lots of subtle and delicate Chinese words that I often use but don't realize the reason/importance of. Great job Shuo! Love you~~~

    It's this part of learning languages that's so frustrating but also so fun to learn. You can't really write notes for these specific feelings the way they show up in real life. You just gotta remember the feeling. Thanks for putting these really difficult-to-explain words into an easy-to-understand visual guide :)

    As far as I understand, it's like this:
    都 emphasis
    并/並 refutation of assumption
    竟然 surprise
    到底 intensifier, or something
    又 adv. (in a negative statement or rhetorical question for emphasis)
    (according to Train Chinese)

      都 in these examples mean 'all', specifically 'in every one of the cases being referenced'.
      每天 = every day
      每天都... = On each and every day
      到底 literally means 'at the end', in the sense of 'when pursued to the very end', meaning 'in the final analysis'.

    Excellent content! I finally hear a good explanation of 又. In Spanish the effect for those sentences with 又 is perfectly translatable!
    For Spanish speakers: 我又不知道!¡ Yo qué sé!
    嗯, 他是我的男朋友。那又怎么样呢? Sí, él es mi novio. ¿Y qué?
    我又不在乎。A mí qué me importa

    Your videos often explain features of the Chinese language that are as often untranslatable if one does not grasp the idiosyncrasies of the Chinese mentality and how the Chinese express it with their language! This is nowhere to be found in grammars or textbooks. Hence bless you for all these detailed explanations with examples and the theatrics you show us to help understand the specific meanins, contexts and situations of use! Please do more videos like that! I really love them and I am quite sure that I am not the only one who appreciates them!

    In Vietnamese, we translate "you" to a word has the meaning "ye (too, also)". I think in this kind of cases, we can translate it like that. For example, "ni wen wo ganma? Wo you bu zhidao" can be translated like: "why do you ask me? i don't know either". In another example, "ni you bu shi gui" can be translated: you are not ghost either (because the person say this sentence is not a ghost, she wants to say 'you r a human just like me, how do you know what ghosts think')

    I know Shuo didn't ask for this correction, and her English is phenomenal, so I would rarely ever need to point anything out, but there's this one thing I just want to say: It's not "play my phone", it's "play on my phone""play on my phone" (because it is like a computer). If you say "play my phone" it sounds like you are playing your phone as a musical instrument. Shuo's videos are my favourite Chinese series on youtube and I recommend them to my fellow students.

    Maybe effect words are why some sentences translate with the wrong meaning
    For example, with Hua Chenyu's song "I don't care" the lyrics《我管你的感受》 translate to "I care about your feelings" aaaaand I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be "I don't care about your feelings"

    Great video with first class explanations and examples, as always! 👍🙂 What you call "effect" ("effect words") is often referred to as "modal", or sometimes "expressive" meaning. Typically, these kinds of words express a meaning that isn't primarily "descriptive", but rather (as you yourself touch on in your video) linked to the speaker's presuppositions . According to some theories, swear words also express these kinds of meaning (try explaining the meaning of "damn", in "that damn dog"... 🙂). In Chinese, another group of words that obviously also belong to this/these kind/s of words are the so called modal particles, like 嘛,呀,啊. Once again, great work 老师! 您很辛苦啦! ❤👍🙂

    • @tymanung768
      @tymanung768 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are also verb modes-- imperative, conditional, 2.subjunctives, Chinese, like English, uses
      1) modal auxiliary verbs,
      2) various adverbs,
      3) plus above
      mentioned particles
      Xiexie nin!!!

Speaking about Chinese grammar, I have learned before that people only use 還是 when asking a question not in declarative sentence? Or is that 中國人use both words interchangeably ? 謝謝老師 for your confirmation.
