I use rotella T6 and buy the one gallon or 2.5 gallon jugs. I buy in bulk when it’s on sale from any of the big auto parts stores. Just got 4 gallons plus a filter for $100 because Orielly’s was running 25% off. I use the motorcraft filter but rotella T6 5w40 oil. I did my first oil change at 1000 miles and every 5k miles for every change after that. I did the first change at 1000 miles before I towed our 18000lb 5th wheel.

I know this video is old.. but i just had my first oil change today at 5k miles.... at the dealership. 1st one is free. Oil life monitor said I had 33% oil life left... I will be going by the oil life monitor and change the oil when it drops below 20%... also, they made a change to a larger oil filter FOR longer oil change intervals....

Don’t pay attention to that oil life monitor. It will just get you through your warranty period. Its not calibrated for maximum engine life….
You should, however make sure your engine is well broken in before you upgrade your oil. You want to make sure its broken in and all the parts are meshing well. Otherwise it extends the break in period if you upgrade your oil to soon.

Pre-fill that oil filter. 80% or so. Otherwise, it will add time the engine is running un-lubricated after starting it.

1:06 $15 a quart you could have bought Amsoil which is a far superior oil for $12 a quart under their preferred customer program which is renewed automatically for free if you spend $500 a year or more. Which with a couple trucks seeing commercial use isn’t hard to do. Go sign up and get far better quality oil for less and free shipping.

I’m sure am glad I watched this video and learned that 2023 6.7 PSD’s take 15 quarts, not 13 like all previous model years. My fault for not checking first. Only 205 miles (not towing) since my first oil change running 13 quarts, so no harm done. Added 2 quarts, good to go. Thanks DS!

26:56 when you go to fire up any ford vehicle after an oil change put your foot on the throttle to the floor. This puts the vehicle in diagnostic mode and it will crank but not start. Let it crank for 5-7 seconds and fill the oiling system and build oil pressure. Tip to fill that filter and the rest of the system.

My first oil change on my '23 6.7HO ran me $150 plus tax at the local dealer quick lube. $105 for the 15 quarts of MotorCraft full synthetic, $15 for the oil filter and $30 in labor. I am not sure if that was a standard price or discounted but it's certainly not cheap. 5:15 it’s not worth it for you or anyone with one of these trucks. That’s a $25,000 engine and even at $250 per oil change you’d have to change the oil 100x to equal the cost of ONE ENGINE!! At 5,000 mile intervals that’s 500,000 miles to equal the cost of one engine. Just change to Amsoil and put on their oil bypass filtration kit to keep the oil cleaner longer.

Don’t use a full synthetic PAO oil. After talking to Hot Shot’s tech advisor he told me that PAO oils do NOT handle fuel dilution well at all and will not mix well with the diesel fuel blow by. He said if you mainly highway your truck it’s ok but city driving and stop/go high demands create a lot more fuel being passed thru the rings and into the oil, and since PAO oils do not mix well with anything you run the risk of amounts of pure diesel fuel getting passed into your engine and causing damage. Again DS, the PAO oils were designed for long haul truckers……at least that is what he told me, but it does make sense. He recommended I run the Green Diamond series oil in my 6.7 HO.

I learned alot and he explained a lot and he explained that PAO oils are really great but don’t handle fuel dilution very well but do extremely well in long haul diesels as they don’t suffer from fuel dilution as nearly as much as city driven, idling, stop and go or for example snow plowing. I certainly would not use MOTORCRAFT oil. Ford makes vehicles not oil. They have many different companies bid on which company blends their oil brand and package it as Motorcraft. It is about profit, nothing at all to do with quality. The oil company is making sure that it formulates an oil that just passes the minimum specifications. Buy your oil from a reputable oil company that blends oil to exceed all the requirements and not just barely passing the grade.

The sales/marketing department of all automakers go to the engineering department and ask if the motor will last through the warranty period if they extend the intervals. Cause that’s all they care about, will the vehicle last to the end of the warranty period. Depending on how you use your truck, 5k mile intervals is a widely accepted and recommended. If you want to go longer, you HAVE to use those expensive oils due to their ZDDP packages and you can’t run the OEM filter, unless you want to be changing just the filter multiple times during the interval span.
