- A walk through the Hoh Rainforest in Olympic National Park late June 2013. This is raw footage and has not been enhances or altered from our hike along the Hoh River Trail this year. We're based in Utah where forests like this are almost alien to us, and we couldn't have enjoyed it more. These woods seemed almost magical. Olympic National Park is easily the lushes place I've ever visited. May it long remain that way.
There's something special about Washington. Born and raised and never leaving.

I live in Washington state. Sometimes I think I take the beauty here for granted. Videos like this make me appreciate what a blessing it is to live here.

At Home In Wild Spaces yes we went two years in a row actually. stayed in Sekiu, just north of Forks facing the bay. So beautiful.
We moved to La Push in 1964 then 14 miles south of Forks on 101, took my kids to Mora several times a year. No video can do it justice you must go see it in your lifetime. It is my anchor.
I just came from New Zealand and visited a temperated rainforest and now Im like I need to go back to a similar place

I'm in love with the haunting natural beauty of Forks ad this green for 10 years since I wad a teen. Always my dream to live there one day and trying to make it happen. Sadly, many people care more about economic benefits than protecting nature nowadays. Such a beautiful place. Definitely going there next year.
The pull between exploitation and preservation is very real. These places need passionate defenders. So little remains. To lose more would be a tragedy.
We too have fallen in love with the Olympic Peninsula. Always a joy when we get to visit.

That's a neat video of an extremely fascinating corner of our beautiful planet. I back-packed at Hoh Rainforest a couple of summers ago and was on the same trail. Everytime I reminisce of the Olympics, my heart can't wait for another outdoor adventure, there or any of the many other grand National Parks across the land.

I am going in June 2018! The first week of summer vacation exploring national parks! 2 days in Olympic and I get to sleep in a cabin on Mt. Ranier. I hope I spelled that right!

The North Fork Hoh River was my first backpacking trip many years ago. Have gone on to hike about half of Olympics and would like to do all major trails. I've been back to the Hoh 4 times since original trip and still one of my favorite hikes. In response to below comments - yes, it is usually muddy unless end of summer. I've done it with rain every day . . . which is why it is called rain forest. Most wildlife are more scared of you then you of them. Most wildlife know you are there before you are aware of them and will leave if they don't want an encounter. As for Bigfoot/Sasquatch, probably just me when out for a week with no shower.

Hi, I found this extremely helpful as I plan to visit in July with my young son. Looks, muddy (to be expected). I've read other comments below about it being crowded, could you be so kind to share your experiences on exactly how crowded this gets in the Summer time? Thank you very much!
marimo chan So glad our video was helpful! As far as crowds go, we were fortunate. In late June when we visited, the weather was still rather we and the crowds more or less absent. The one exception would have been on the Hall of Moses trail, due to its close proximity to the Hoh visitor center and the fact that it is one of the park's easier hikes. A general rule when it comes to avoiding crowds is get started early in the morning. Crowds in National Parks tend to reach their peak by afternoon, but begin to show up around 10-11am. Good Luck!!! Olympic National Park is breathtaking even with crowds. Thanks so much for watching!!!

Sebas Rey Florida Huh? I love florida.
First off I'd suggest watching the weather closely including doppler radar, since the forecast can change suddenly. The Pacific Northwest, and specifically the Olympic Peninsula can be very wet. Some people may find that unpleasant, but we love it. It does mean plan on rain. (Rain cover, light jacket/wind breaker, etc.) Temperatures are likely to be somewhat cooler than florida.
This late in the summer, temperatures are likely to be pretty comfortable. It's been a dryer than average year in western Washington, so it may also be dry and sunny. If the skies are clear, then enjoy the added visibility, but even overcast days can be amazing. During our trip it was complete overcast and rainy everyday, and it was still one of our favorite trips.
Other than that all the other outdoor advice still applies: Know Before You Go, Leave Absolutely No Trace, Pace Yourself, Know Your Limits, and Enjoy.

It does snow occasionally in the rainforest, but most moisture falls as rain.

Hoh River Rainforest trail. You start from the Hoh Rainforest visitor center and follow the trail along the Hoh River for up to 17 miles if you like. Happy trails, this places is magical!
Please tell me, if it's hot and sunny(90) in say Seattle, what would the temp be in the rainforest? 60's? Also, how do you not get lost walking in there? That is a huge fear of mine. Thanks!
+Joe Smith I hope it never gets into the 90's again in Seattle. The average high for Seattle in July is 75 Fahrenheit. The rainforest is a few degrees cooler.
Great video! Any idea what the weather should be like first week in October? Rain is fine, just trying to gauge how much. Also, and perhaps a stupid question - what's the area like in terms of mushroom and fungi activity?
Craig Pritch Not sure about the weather, I'd imagine wet and maybe a little on the cooler side. The National Park website will have some good resources which will give you a better idea of weather. I'd also suggest checking local forecast networks and so on.
As for mushrooms and fungi, they seem to be quite prevalent within the national park. Just a friendly reminder though, removing anything from a national park is prohibited, so if you're wanting to pick some and take them home we'd suggest checking out the national forest of the same name. How does it smell in these rainforests. The subtropical rainforests in eastern australia tend to have a very pungent odour, lots of insects, unpleasant heat and humidity.
We visited in late June. It was rainy for the entire duration of our stay which meant the air smelt fresh and clean. Still humid, but not hot.
Not sure about every season but our visit would heavenly. Thanks for watching and commenting!!!!

+ליאת ג. Hoh River Trail. It can almost be as long as you'd like. You can hike for one Mile or 20 or more. It winds its way through the lush valleys of Olympic National Park before heading into the Olympic Mountains up to the Blue Glacier. Along the way it meets up with other trail systems. +Mono Cerata If memory serves we hiked about 5 miles in. But the trail continues for about 17 miles, first winding through the rainforest before ascending into the mountains and ending at the Blue Glacier. So for the inexperienced hiker to the die hard hiker this trail can service pretty much anybody's needs. Good to hear from you again! Enjoy your trip to Olympic National Park.

Julien Gatien We were fortunate and beat the summer crowds. But because we went early, we had to set up, sleep in, and take down our camp in the rain. If that is something you can handle then it's definitely worth it. If memory serves I think we saw about 5 people on the trail that whole day. It's rare to have such places seemingly to yourself.
Are there bears and big cats here? I want to get more outdoorsy, but I am so scared of Sasquatch, bears, and big cats.
I can't tell you much about Sasquatch, but black bears, bobcats and I believe cougars are prevalent Olympic National Park. You are far more likely to see a bear than either a bobcat or a cougar. When it comes to predators, knowledge is your best ally. Many national parks offer numerous resources and instruction on how best to prepare and act if you do come across a large predator.
We came across 5 bears last year, and by allowing them their space and adhering to predator safe practices, we thoroughly enjoyed the encounters and easily avoided any dangerous situations. Best of luck in your outdoor travels! Thanks for watching and commenting, we hope you'll do so again!

We did not, but we were fortunate. A mile or so past the trail head we had the place seemingly to ourselves.
