A couple of tips from a resident that lives close to the park? Get up and get to the park EARLY. If you need to, buy your pass a day ahead or for a block of time. We have an annual NP pass. It's the best. The gates are open 24/7. There are kiosks if the station isn't manned. It's the honor system...and your karma. Pack food and drinks for the day. Saves a ton of time and money. If you really want to see the whole mountain, loosely plan a day or two when the weather will be the best and then head up. This is tough with people's schedules but when the mountain is out..... you'll love it. Or do what we do most of the year and enjoy the rain and snow and fog!. Did I mention going early? I'm glad you liked it so much!!
@@chrisriley7915 the Nisqually entrance is the only entrance open in the winter. Also, the park has gone to a weekend only schedule for anything above Longmire. With that said, Rampart Ridge is nice. That starts just across from Longmire. A section of the Wonderland trail cuts through that area as well. Everything low is mostly in the trees but that's not a bad thing. If weather permits, the trail to Comet Falls is fun and the falls are awesome! If you want to see the deep snow, wait until the weekend. It will be crowded but the amount of snow is pretty stunning and if it's a clear day, the views are some of the best in the world. Check the park website for entrance information. Also, the WTA website is a good source of trail beta. It's usually up to date.
Correction: the Nisqually entrance is the only entrance from the west that's open to cars. On the southwest side, where I live, the Stevens canyon entrance is an option but the Grove of the Patriarchs is not accessible now because of last year's floods. There is a nice, easy hike over this side called Silver Falls. The falls are usually roaring in March but it's a pretty long drive if you're coming from the Seattle/Tacoma direction. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

One thing I would like to add about Mt. Rainer. On U.S. Highway 97 in south central Washington about 7 miles north of the Columbia River is a viewpoint where 4 mountains can be seen at once: Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams, and of course Mt. Rainer. From this viewpoint, Mt. Rainer stands in all its grandeur a whopping 85 miles away! My wife, daughter, and I were at this viewpoint on April 22, 2024, and we were fortunate that we had a clear, sunny day.
Mountains? Is that what you call them? It’s sad we all live life with our eyes closed to the truth. They are what’s left of the biggest tree on the planet, now referred to as the Colombia plateau. Yes it is obviously a tree stump. All around it are bits of it macerated into waste heaps. Open your eyes and look around. There are no volcanos! You can’t get to the sky by digging down . No matter where you are China is east north
I summited Mt. Rainier in 2003. It was a great trip with some amazing views especially from the top. Too many people on the mountain even back then, I can't even imagine how crowded it gets now
These are all good tips. However, people should know it's also very seasonal and weather dependent. It looks like you hiked the park. When I went it was May and we hiked up to Camp Muir, which I believe is 10,500-11,000ft. The remaining trip to the summit requires passes and special climbing gear. My recommendations would be if you're doing what I did, to pack light and efficient. A good pair of hiking boots, hiking sticks, backpack with protein bars and water is all you'll really need. But, don't forget sunblock, sunglasses, and gators to go over your boots to keep the snow out. One other thing is a way to get back down. You can hike it but, after the accent you'll more than likely be pretty whipped. So, skis or a little sled will help immeasurably.
Another helpful tip to this magical place is, mid July and August are when the mass bloom starts of the wildflowers and it is incredible! If you think what Heaven should look like. This is the place! Defiantly go early or you may not get a parking spot at Paradise.
Last year we visited Mt Ranier at Paradise on July 4 and they had 6 feet of snow July 1 so we couldn’t walk the trails- too slippy. Still beautiful though and had my third encounter with Clarks nutcrackers landing n my hands for food. We spent the night at Paradise I think in June 2014 and it was 90 degrees- no air conditioning. It was so hot for sleeping but the wildflowers were everywhere, the mountain was out and we saw tons of deer and marmots. It was magical. On one visit in March we never saw the mountain as it rained the while time and the clouds covered the mountain- we only saw it on the airplane on the way home. I feel lucky to have had the chance to visit this great mountain.
USUALLY in June, you won't see that much snow on the road to Paradise. The road to Sunrise is higher in elevation and opens later, usually in July. Also, Tacoma is MUCH closer to the mountain than Seattle and Puyallup is even closer to it. The mountain makes it's own weather, so dressing in layers is usually a good plan.
We have lived in the PNW for 70 years and visited Mount Rainier ever so many times. When our kids were teenagers we hiked the 90-100 mile Wonderland Trail all the way around the mountain. I climbed Mt. Rainier 3x and drank a bottle of Rainier beer on the summit. I have also winter camped on frozen Reflection Lake plus built a snow cave.
Washington State is one of the most awesome and beautiful places on Earth..... Sadly vary underrated, or maybe that is a good thing. Also mt St Helens, Adams, Baker, Glacier Peak are crazy badass peaks in WA

I LOVE Mt. Rainier! AKA Tahoma, Tacoma, etc. I used to live in Renton WA and a few times rode my touring Harley to Paradise, got my hiking boots out of a saddlebag, and walked up the big parking lot to Skyline Trail. In the summer, it's like a God Damned Disney movie up there. Think gorgeous happy flowers, silly happy critters, mountains on top of mountains, streams, clouds in the mountains but below you.... Go in summer, wear actual hiking boots, bring a huge Fuji water, a camera, and leave all day open. And don't try to climb Rainier, hike Skyline and LOOK at Rainier and everything else. Sorry lady, but it was perfect weather everytime I went lol.
I only visited Mt. Rainier once 15 years ago. Unfortunately I shared your experience as there was heavy rain and fog all the time I was there. But at another occasion I got a nice photo from a distance of around 80 miles east of the mountain 😀
YOU MISSED IT !!! I live 25 miles away and the tail end of June Mt. Rainier lost 30% of snow & ice in only 4 days according to satellite photos because of our 100+ when it normal to be mid 70s also the snow is usually here in July on a lot of trails. Laying on the couch I can see Rainier so close as a bird flies its 10-15 miles away nothing but tree tops and 3/4 of Rainier . July & August are the hottest months but also crowded where Sept it sunny but cooler in the Cascades with cold nights. As a teenager I rode my 10 speed from Tacoma to Paradise , I have been to the top in mid 70s . I grew up knowing the Whitaker Brothers thru their ski shop in Lakewood in the 60s and until this last September my niece was manager of Whitaker Mountaineering in Ashford .
June 2023: Amazing 5G/ All-bars internet in Paradise parking lots. Overnight parking is allowed in the Paradise west lot. Clean/quiet stealth "camping" only though! ( Be respectful, or this privilege will be lost.) Yes, the weather is dynamic here. Yesterday was mild & sunny with mostly clear views of Mt.Rainier. Today, it's in the 30s & 40s, & the mountain has been completely hidden by clouds/fog.
This information is old now. It is very hard to get to these places this year the Steven’s Canyon Road is closed and Grove of the Patriarchs is closed for the foreseeable future. You need to be at your destination by 7am very limited parking.
Great video..the Whittaker bunkhouse is named for jim and lou Whittaker who ran the climbing school. I worked at the national park inn at longmire summers 1969 and 1970..it was one of my most favorite places ever ❤☺

Nice video. Luckily, I got to see the mountain while I was there. I had to wait 20 minutes or so for a break in the clouds. You forgot to mention the cost of admission to the park. I thought it was outrageous!
As a life-long resident of the area, I'd reinforce point #7...don't ever take Mt. Rainier lightly. It is, by far, the most dangerous mountain in the USA, with the body count to prove it. Like most if not all of the area's residents, I love Mt. Rainier, but I'm also aware the mountain doesn't love me back.
Generally cooling weather during October, with chilly nights, and snow always a possibility at elevations of 5,000 ft or higher, particularly later in the month. Peak high country fall colors are typically early in the month. If you hit a spell of clear weather, early October is a great time to hike.
Yes you should be fine! Just keep all the precautions I mentioned in mind. The most years, the area is usually snow-free from about mid-July through late September.
Was all of your footage filmed in June? We're visiting the first week of June this year and I'm wondering how much the weather will impact it in terms of road closures and inaccessible trails and such.
I see big tour busses & shuttle van companies bringing ppl up. However, if you have your own vehicle that you can sleep in, it might be better. ( Cloudy weather might block your view of the mnt, so if you can stay more than one day, you might get lucky & see it on a clear day. )
Also, the "to go" food, don't just throw your trash about, keep this park clean and don't be a turd. :D Just saying, eat at the restaurant, mind that there really are bears and cougar in those hills too. They like people food and will smell it on you and your tent.
First, call ahead. If you want to 'see The Mountain', the park people up there (the phone number is on the internet) will be honest with you (they don't want you to be disappointed). Second, buy your food outside of the park. Cheaper, no lines, and lots of choices. Third, get out of your car and walk away from the crowds. You will be by yourself in seconds. Finally, look for people with spotting scopes at the lodge; they LOVE to show you the wildlife they have found.
Go early or later in the day. I have spent many fantastic evenings hiking much less crowded trails. The opportunity to spot wildlife is really good in the evenings as well. Hiking with limited snow starts after July 4th and goes up to early October.

It depends on what hike you do! We only did beginner / moderate hikes which didn't take long at all. You will see waterfalls and views a few minutes into your hike. However, if you are summiting Rainier, or doing any strenuous hikes - I recommend researching it in depth.
3:58 Wi-Fi and internet is not exactly same thing. You can have internet through your cellphone network without wifi if your phone has signals. There's no internet or no cell signal would be more accurate to say 😘

The landscape will be blanketed in snow and many roads will be closed for snow. From their website: The road between Longmire and Paradise is open on weekends and closes nightly. It reopens in the morning once the road has been plowed.

The visitors centers and easy hikes are fine, but a lot of hikes don’t even allow dogs - very slippery and rocky terrain.

We went at the end of June. There's been a heatwave, but there definitely is still snow at the top of Rainier. Summer is the recommended time to come.
It depends on what hike you do! We only did beginner / moderate hikes which didn't take long at all. You will see waterfalls and views a few minutes into your hike. However, if you are summiting Rainier, or doing any strenuous hikes - I recommend researching it in depth.

3:58 Wi-Fi and internet is not exactly same thing. You can have internet through your cellphone network without wifi if your phone has signals. There's no internet or no cell signal would be more accurate to say 😘
Yes “no service” is what I meant. Your phone turns into a brick throughout most of this park.
@@RunTheAtlas That can be very frustrating sometimes. 2 years ago I was almost lost in Ansel Adams wilderness. Learned my lesson since then I download offline maps before I go anywhere.

The landscape will be blanketed in snow and many roads will be closed for snow. From their website: The road between Longmire and Paradise is open on weekends and closes nightly. It reopens in the morning once the road has been plowed.
