- This BMW E28 has been sitting in my driveway for a long time. I got this car 5 years ago with the intention of restoring it but other projects got in the way. It hurt to watch it slowly rust away so action needed to be taken. This is what happened...

I just seen this and laughed out loud
I remember a 1985 Mk3 Escort XR3i I had once, I stripped it down to just rolling shell for welding and paint (mechanicals I can handle but bodywork was out of my league!). Once I received it back I was in heaven, cleaning, painting, polishing all the parts and putting it back together again. That first engine start up was magic, the car was beautiful once more. I should never have sold her but hey life goes on. All the best form the UK!
First step in diagnostics: check the easiest, simplest thing first :)
and use all your senses.
if you can't hear the pump working before the start it's probably faulty
More like be younh money cash money and replace all the parts. No diagnosis. Just part replacement.
That's basically what even the professional mechanics do nowadays.
it's a process of elimination.
Its crazy the amount of people that don't even check the fuses when something stops working

A tip for the future: if you aren't sure if the fuel pump works, just turn on the ignition and listen if the fuel pump works because in most cars the fuel pump turns on before the engine does.
just because it makes a noise doesn't mean it will work

Great video, Memphis. When it didn't start the first time, my initial thought was that relay. Those Bosch systems are notorious! Lucas Electrics may be the lighting company that invented darkness, but Robert Bosch refined it!

prachtige video en zo herkenbaar...wij rijden een Audi A4 1.9 TDI 110 pk, en ja met ruim een half miljoen kilometers is er altijd wel wat iets wat er aan de auto moet gebeuren...geld, schelden en soms vloekend ben je in, en onder de auto continu bezig, maar als alles weer loopt en snort is de tevredenheid wat het van alles wint! wow your engine makes a lot less niose in the top end than mine, I have a 1986 325e that sounds like every valve in the engine is out of adjustment lmao
and I can't believe you spent only like an hr of work to get it running, mine used to die after about an hour of running and not start again until I feddled around with it for 2 hrs and it would magically start again, finally got it running good today after cleaning up the positive distribution block and changing out the main fuel filter like you did, after a full year of owning it, I spent all day working on it and was finally able to take it for a test drive around my area, it feels like it has about 80hp but at this point I don't even care, it at least runs now :)

I have a BMW E30 320i which has the same engine as the one in the video only my engine doesn't start up it just cranks - I've checked the fuel pump, it whines and works, there's fuel getting into the fuel rail. I changed the fuel injectors and cleaned them thoroughly. I've done a compression test and the compressions seems good. There are no obvious leaks in the air system, so I'm kinda stuck as to what it is.
I suspect it's the crank position sensor (known as speed sensor or pulse sensor) but I'm finding it impossible to find anything online about the M20B20 engine which is annoying. I guess I'll need to get the car up on jack stands to find it.
Any help would be appreciated as I want to get the engine running to learn about it before I consider changing the engine completely.
