Interesting video, Memphis. That car looks great for its age. Here in Ontario, where we really do have severe winters, all of those cars rotted into piles of scrap years ago, so it is lovely seeing one being given lots of care and attention. Keep up the good work.

Good luck with your project! I am in the middle of a restoration my e28 528i '82 and it has some several issues as yours too. But in my case there is more welding, which might be done soon. Actually I have cold start problems too and it was incorrect vac hose connection close to the intake manifold and Air slide valve. Make sure that the ASV works properly too - you can find videos and guides how to test in the oven and freezer. Also clean the inside of ASV.

Good luck with your project, got myself an e28 528i in march which luckily only has some rust at the boot gasket and on the inside of one front fender, other than that no rust and no problems.

I did my bodywork on my 528i last year, but it was a lot of rust. I took my dads welder and learned fast :)
What welder did you use? Im thinking of buying a TIG
@@memphis5220 uff, tig is expensive and hard to learn, its god if you use it for smaller stuff that you can access and/or weld on a table. But if you want to weld on the car you should go with mig. Its easier to work with and easier to learn, plus you can weld upside down wit him and vertical too...ofc you can do it with tig but again its alot harder to make it as good as mig

I know this video was uploaded a while ago, but if she still idles high, the M20B20 uses a H shaped air valve under the intake manifold, which is super hard to get your hands on one if they go wrong. They work by having coolant flow through it, which when up to a certain temp pulls closed the additional air needed to maintain a higher idle when cold. Because it works by expending wax, a new one is needed when replacing opposed to a salvaged part like you would a thermostat. Test it like a thermostat, put it in hot water and see if the piston moves (closes). This is essentially a non-electronic idle control valve, and is odd because other models use an electronically controlled one that pushed straight into the throttle body rubber boot. If you have sorted it already, cool... but if not, have a look into this valve. Hope it helps.
Hey I might be a bit late but before taking appart the gearbox to check synchros you might want to try MTL Redline oil. My dad had an issue on his e21 with a getrag 4spd where when he downshifted, the second gear would grind. A friend of his recommended this oil, and the gearbox has had no issues for the last 7 years :) I don't even think he changed it again during this period.

Its weird seeing the rust on European cars, in Australia the underside is always almost completely rust free in most non offroad cars i see, we usually get rust on the doors or beneath the windows.

@@user-qx7tm5df8j what's bad about it? Im just curious since I've been doing it quite a lot and haven't had a problem. Just be sure to slip some jack stands under the car if you're actually going under it or taking off wheels.
@@TheMutsoo its just bad practice imo (espescially on old cars). if its not meant to be lifted there, you could damage it. why not use the strong subframe instead?

you can totally lift from a diff. go ask anyone who owns a truck. just dont have the jack on the cover.
