I grew up at 16 yrs old in the Chicago suburbs working at a BMW dealer. My boss liked me and trusted me and let me learn to drive stick on his 88 BMW M5. Also drove an orange 635 CSI with gold bbs wheels, the 850s and 93 M3s new - at 16. Also drove a Shelby replica AC Cobra and a 67 Corvette Stingray convertible. Years later after moving to Los Angeles working for a company I found out my customer was Carroll Shelby and got a private viewing of his collection there. I love cars. I love older BMWs.
I got to fly a military helicopter when I was 15 years old... and did it enough times that I was capable of soloing the thing. Some of us kids happened to be in the right place at the right time..👍
I own an e28 535is that I came across on a trade. Being a 5cyl Audi 200 guy originally I can’t express how much character this car expresses at all times. Thanks for the e28 love.
I'm the proud steward of an 1982 euro 525i e28 with factory slick top, crank windows, and 4-speed. Alpine white with cardinal interior. Wouldn't give it up for the world! Fabulous video. Thanks for creating and sharing!
Stanceworks vehicle features have played a massive role in my life over the years, so being able to watch them in video form, fills a void, and I am so stoked about it. Please, please feature more vehicles and tell their stories. As always, great work Mike. Thanks for what you do!
This the best looking one ( At 5:21 ) , This the 1 ! That hot rod sounding " BMW " ain't it . This is how I want my dream BMW 5 series to look . No sound just smooth (Alpine white or Diamond Black ) The will game is crazy .
Thanks for this Mike..I've got 2 e28s and it's lovely to see some love out there from cognoscenti such as yourself. Your videos always rock. Your style gels with my requirements for a quality film. Neve miss an episode!
I will never forget the day my dad brought home his new 1984 533. Black with red leather five speed. I was hooked, after owning three BMWs I wish they made them like they used to.
That is a stunning E28! I have an E39 as my daily and an E30 that I lusted after for 25 years and I adore both of them. It's getting harder and harder to find these gems (especially with a manual transmission), but I love to see examples like this. You cannot beat older (2004 and older for me) BMW's for classically beautiful styling and a drivng experience that has to be experienced for yourself, you just can't explain to someone how good they are. I love that analog feel when everything is going digital these days. And a crack free dash?!?! That is about as common as a unicorn!
My very first car was a used 84 BMW 520i I bought in Germany. It had a manual transmission sport wheels fat rubber & a manual sun roof. The car was bad on gas & had a GORILLA clutch. I drove it everywhere all over Germany & sold it for as much as I paid for it. My second BMW was a 94 530i with that same M60 V8 but with an auto & I was in love. This video brought both of those cars together for me in a way I didn't think possible. Thanks for sharing BM Vee passion & thanks for sharing this car.
Awesome car! I'm more of a Benz guy myself, I do agree with you the E28 is probably one of the most elegant saloons ever. And it sure was more of a driver's car than a Benz of that era. I'm a lazy driver, so I prefer a W124. To me both great saloons from an era when cars were fun and it was not considered wrong to enjoy them.
My first car was an 1986 e28 520i. Absolutely lowed that car but went too far modifying it and had to let it go due to starting a family. This bring back so many memories of the car. Thanks for the video.
Loved this Mike. The context, history, and detailed breakdown are reminiscent of old BBC Top Gear at its best while still being distinctly SW. The production, as always, was beautiful.
I think it was 2012 when I first stumbled upon your website. Didnt take long to find JW's E28. I followed the Rusty Slammington build, the two Hot Rods that were built and all the other cars youve showcased over time. JW's E28 was my laptop wallpaper sometime between 2014 & 2016. To see this here on your channel is bit of a homecoming-ish feeling for me. So I can only chance a guess at how you feel. Brilliant. Thanks for sharing.
I really like this kind of content because it shares your passion and features your excellent photography. The E28 has always looked "right" to me but I've never considered owning one. Might have to re-think that now 🙂
I had to sell my 1985 e28 535i when my first son was born - we needed a safer, family car - and I am so sad I had to let that one go. My plan was to make it a project car eventually, never had the funds back then. I do now, I just need another 535i! Love this guys rig, can’t wait to do my own again soon. I’m here in SoCal and will def come calling Stance Works when it’s time. Grateful for these e28 vids.
Fabulous video, brother. I am a Porsche owner that bought a 2007 BMW M6 convertible with the V10 for summer and now I am obsessed with learning more about older BMW’s. This car is stunning!
Love this type of content from you, perfect match up of old school but modern tech. Also if this is going to be a series, any chance of 3D magic Mike !! His fab/design work is amazing, would love to hear from him (+ he’s worked on movies) and his stable is 🔥🔥🔥
Had an e28 535i in the family when I was a kid and absolutely loved driving it, such engagement with the road, hard to believe how small it was as a sedan compared to where vehicles are today, a gem of a machine.
When I was 21, I stood on the showroom floor of a BMW dealership in Detroit. I will never forget that evening nor the vehicle that has forever captivated me! A 1988 BMW M5! Absolutely everything you spoke to in your vid is spot on! It is one of the most beautiful vehicles ever made. The 3, 6 and 7 series vehicles from this epic lineup in the 1980’s are also stellar in their styling and build…the e28 somehow always floats to the pinnacle of their styling at this very special moment in time near 40 years ago. I wonder if you like M-B 124s? They are quite lovely as well. Lastly, you have to get these vehicles in euro spec with the shallow set bumpers! Just wicked, the car you spotlighted!
Loved this video! I've got a 535i in Australia, has 380,000kms and is still in amazing condition, full service history from day one from the previous original owner. I've got a lot of maintenance, repairs and plans for this car, once the rebuild cylinder head comes back from machining. Oh, and a manual conversion is high on the list of desirable mods to it. There's something about older BMW'S that just can't be explained until you've owned a few, I've lost count now. Keep up the great work!
Hello from greece, this was the reason a became a subscriber to your channel....when i show your e28.....and then this one is beautiful ....sort story this was my 1st car at 18 years of old.....my favourite one...i miss my old e28...i have many good memories of it....thanks and keep going.....the best 5 series bmw ever made....
Great episode.I'm from Brisbane, Australia, & have 2 e28's. Both originally were m535i's, but one had an Alpina B10 kit applied in 1996 (well before I had it). Love both cars elegance, reliability, performance and retro styling.Jeremy's car here is superb.
My neighbor owned an 88 M5 when I was in college. Every single time I saw him drive it, I was absolutely transfixed by it mann. Years later, one of my buddies owned an 86 535is that I actually drove and I was hooked. I've been mysteriously drawn to these cars since my graduation from high school wayy back in 1983. A new Buick dealership in Philly had a 79 733i on their lot for sale as a used car trade and I foolishly thought I could convince my Pops into assisting me in buying it and he told me no way. Upkeep & maintenance repairs would be wayy too expensive for me to handle. All the right reasons. Today, I own an 86 M635Csi as part of my small personal collection. I'll never sell it. I still do hope to some day add an E28 5. Thanks again for the great content. #respect
Was lucky enough to be stationed at Garlstedt, FRG in the late 80s. Bought a 79 BMW 316 in red and a 1980 525 in green. Upped the 525 motor to a 528. Had the split tail trunk spoiler. Was an autobahn killer.
Mike, please keep talking, I can listen to your narration for days on end. I grew up in Germany, before I transplanted to Orlando. For me hands down the 80’s 5 series is the best looking Beamer ever conceived. For me a car has a chocolate look spot on this 5 series? I always loved rear right in an shallow angle to underline the MASSIVE negative camber on the rear wheels… loved it!
As a brand I never liked BMW and always skip any vids with any in it. But knowing your taste and talent I watched it all the way through. I shall make a correction, the only model that tickles my pickle is an 630 CSI coupe from the late 70’s. Drove one once and was blown away, I was 18. Thanks brother.
I told you a couple weeks ago that I have both a 308 and a URquattro in the garage now. When I was fresh out of college I bought a 528e and I loved it. In fact I loved it so much that when it came time for me to sell it, I had a very hard time doing it. So I sold it to my brother and he still has it twenty years later. Probably one of thee best cars of all time.
I'm a Merc guy, but, a true car guy. I've owned a BMW and can appreciate the passion ANYONE has for their favorite ride. Thanks for sharing the details. Just makes me wanna go deeper into my passion for the W203 & C209 C/CLK Mercs. ⬅6 speed manual swap?😁
It’s great to see these sedans becoming a pinnacle in a subdued racing facet. As an owner of a 1 owner 528e, I can now understand and appreciate the build quality and road drivability it has . Slow, but I like it that way. It has a certain attitude in the way it initially dives into the turns like no other vehicle, ever! And with the way it absorbs bumps, I feel like it was the best 5grand ever spent on any vehicle purchase I’ve ever made. Btw, 37mpg hwy mileage out of a gas 6 cylinder…hmmm, how come you don’t see that in any modern 6 ? Love em!!!
I love my E46. Beautiful 328i mystic blue metallic sedan, vintage of 2000. My dad got it in 1999 when he graduated out of business school. He handed it down to me, and I love that car. It has a lot of issues now and me and my dad have made it a project car in our garage. But that car had no issues up until 220k miles, and it has over 250k miles on it now. That car handles so perfectly, it really is excellent as a driving machine. BMW not so long ago made real quality cars, that were beautiful, a great combination between tech and analog, and a masterpiece to drive. I miss old BMWs, they really are awesome.
As long as it's something you're passionate about, like the E28, make the video. The quality and the love you have for the car shows. So definitely keep doing these!
much appreciated, thank you! My first car was an 84' 528e and i loved it! I now have an 84' 533i as well! I may sell it later this year but should make some more memories with it beforehand!
Love the old 5s, but I saw a 7 like earlier in the vid and stopped and took photos, it was just THAT well put together. Used to drift an E21 long ago, that shark nose blood ran through them all at this age. Damn I miss proper cars.
Yes I'm an E28 fan, I drove my father's one when I was younger, I've owned 5 of them & still have one today, she's a bit of a beater but pure enjoyment to drive, thanks for showing this one to us, Rj in Oz
Can't say I'm a BMW fan. However what I find is, I love watching videos of people passionate about cars. That will keep me watching. Keep up the great work.
This is the most beautiful E28 I’ve ever seen. Peak BMW design. There is so much to love about older BMW cars and given the opportunity I wouldn’t hesitate to obtain an E28 M5 or E30 M3. This car in particular is spectacularly done, I just had to comment which I rarely do on TH-cam. What a car. What an era. 😮💨
I just bought a mint 1976 2002, the car that coined the phrase " Ultimate Driving Machine" I had two of those in the early 80's. I also have owned a 3.0 si ( Bavaria, with fuel injection) , a 1978 530i, 1979 528i, 1984 635 CSI.
Nicely done - classic to see the vintage advertising of the train and mountains shot in New Zealand where I have an e38 and an e39 M5. Drove an e24 M5 and fell in love………big $ now though.
been following you since the time you went cross country with rusty and that slammed trailer haha. your content is as good as your photography and your stories and your builds! we dont have much e28s here in Manila so seeing this is a real treat! More pls!
Keep featuring these classic BMWs. One of the most interesting cars I've owned was my (E28). That car broke down with me quite often, but it was one of my favorite Euro toys. Always tinkering with it, but it was fun. I may jump on one in the future. Gotta have the Euro bumpers, headlights etc next time around. ❤
Best Part: historical context and videography Opportunities: longer ride along/noise like smoking tire, more info on chassis and drive train mods, before and after photos and some commentary from the owner to break up Mike's narration
Had a Bronzit Beige E28 M5 clone with 18 inch 3 piece BBS rims and Euro bumpers. Yes, it had 3 pedals and it ran like stink. Most fun car I’ve ever owned.
I had two E34s and LOVED one more. I had both a 525i manual and a 535i auto - and the 525i manual was by far more enjoyable. Subtle grey/green Delfin exterior and beige interior. Super classy. And the sound of that straight six. Sublime. Before the E34 my boss had an E28 535i which convinced me to go for a 5-series.
Please absolutely make more videos like this. I absolutely love the E28 platform. This particular example is perfection. I've been watching your progress for some time now. Please bring in more old school flavor. Sr. 7. E28. E30, etc. More analog Germans, please!
Mike, you have no idea how much you helped to fall in love with the e28. The whole Rusty Slammington story is just gold. Any project of yours I am following closely cause it's just exquisite. I remember being a kid and lived back in Poland. In the 80's or 90's it was just a dream to own a BMW. Only the mafia guys were having those cars. Crazy times ;) Today I'm on third e28 now and enjoy every minute of it. E24 was also parked in the garage. Really enjoyed this video. I think you got it just spot on about e28's. Lovely cars. Keep doing what you doing, you are inspiring so many people. I know it. Cheers!!! Zdrowia!!
my friend drove a e28 520i year 1987 back in high school around 1998. it was the first time I experienced the joy of driving a e28. For now I drove a Peugeot 505 year 1983. E28 is still gonna be my dream car, someday I will bought it, modify it, and drove it.
So good! It’s like going back to the old stanceworks blog where i used to spend most of my time. I loved the old e28 on hre 501 with the 1j. That photo in the rain was my background for a long time. Would be cool to see kassems e30 also
Makes me miss my e28. I had an 87 535is. It was chipped, lowered, big brake conversion front and rear, euro bumpers, euro headlights, bmw glass moonroof, short shifter, and 16 inch style e38 style 5s. Diamond Schwartz metallic with black sport interior
My dad’s friend had one of these and it was… terrible. He was taking it back to the dealer to lemon law the car and got into a bad accident. He walked away from that and went to the dealer and bought another. Always was convinced the car saved his life.
Just my favourite classic BMW. Purchased mine rust-free in Spain 6 years ago and absolutely no regrets. Drove it all the way home, that is 2000km, epic road trip. About the video: I enjoyed it and feel exactly the same about the E28. It was absolutely surprised at the amount of positive reactions you get when driving a mildly modified E28. People of all ages seem to enjoy these cars! You stated in the video that the new engines were developed with the assistance of computers. What new engines? The M30 has been around since 1968. The M10 is even older, and the M20 was introduced in the E21…
More videos like this! With the loss of magazines and even many feature websites this type of content has been largely absent from automotive media for the past few years. Miss seeing y’all’s cars at events on the east coast. I also need some good, old fashioned motivation for my recently purchased E36. Keep it up
Was awesome to meet you the other day at Piuma! I was in the Audi TT. So glad I found out about this channel, I’m loving the content so far! Maybe there’s a TT video coming soon? 😏
I've owned 2 of them and the E28 is up there with the best cars I have owned. These days I drive some M cars from 20 years back, but I always remember how amazing the E28's were at delivering hours of driving enjoyment.
I absolutely love my e28. I was in a bit of a life slump, bought mine for cheap and fell back in love with driving. I even brought my first son home from the hospital in it.
Loved it, my E28 has been and will always be my favorite car, even though it’s only a €1000 rustbucket, it seems to me that the E28 was the car that got it all.
Beautiful! Became a BMW fan when I was given a ride to lunch in Spring 1994 in San Jose in a 5MT 5-series. In summer 2001, I bought my first BMW, an E46 325i sport wagon. If it had the preferred 5MT instead of StepTronic, I might still be driving it. I’m pretty much of a car nut and currently have 3 cars: a 2007 BMW 335i convertible with 6MT and sport pkg, a 2010 BMW 535i sedan 6MT with sport and a 2018 Tesla Model 3 with MPP sport coil overs. Even in the E9x and E60 generation you could see technology taking over, but these cars still have great driving feel, handling and performance.
Love these cars!! When I was a young tech, worked for a shop converting euro M cars to US spec. Driving a brand new 86-87 M5 left a mark. Would love to own one. Great video sir.
My friends had a few of these when we were younger. They were great beaters and one of the few cars I wouldnt mind having on my own. Also sort of what I am basing my Malibu build on is e28/e34 M5 kinda flavor.
I daily an e28 528e. It’s slow, it’s falling apart. Buts never had an engine rebuild in 38 years and she always gets me where I need to go. I love my car
Speaking of old-school Bimmers, years ago I bought a 1980 320is with the factory BBS wheels and the deep front spoiler. It was one of the slowest cars I have ever owned. But much like my FIAT X1/9, also one of the most fun. The Moral of the story being, speed isn't everything. Road/steering feel, chassis dynamics and having character are more important than just "numbers".
I've got a modified E28 with an S50 under the hood. It doesn't get much attention or many miles put on the odometer after I picked up a Focus RS as my daily a few years back. I've been considering selling the E28 for a while now, but this video gave my car a reprieve from the chopping block. Great video and motivation to take care of minor annoyances to get my car back to daily driver readiness.
Really enjoyed this. Was a nice change of pace! How 'bout doing a shop/tool tour and or a walk through on all your current builds? I think new subscribers especially will enjoy it. Keep up the incredible work you're doing.
Please absolutely do more of these video features - fondly remember checking into the Stanceworks blog a couple times a week in previous years and this is a real throwback. Stoked to see your style has translated quite well from text to video!
Elegant and understated are the perfect words. I've wanted an E28 for a very long time, came very close to buying one about a decade ago, had cash in hand at the asking price but the guy couldn't bring himself to let it go. Maybe in the future I'll get another chance. Jeremy has done a great job with this build, aside from the engine swap it's a lot of the same vision I had for the one I'd like. Thanks for the video!
Love that video, got some real vibes in it. My blue E28 has spent like 10 years in the garage now.. time to put engine together again and get her on the road
And because I know someone's gonna out-E28 me... yeah, it's a 535i, not a 535iS. Sue me!
Had an IS years ago and always regretted selling it.
😄
It's the E24 for me. Love, love, LOVE the 635CSi.
lawyer up 😉

The over bite of the hood/grill and the subtle-rounded edges makes those old bmw's timeless
I've always enjoyed your older car showcase videos, so I'm glad to see them return!
Outro blooper was gold too, and damn that laugh was contagious.
Khalil has the best laugh on earth 🇦🇷
@@stanceworks The E28's front is just perfection and timeless. The rear is a bit outdated.

Those 80's and 90's era bimmers are timeless.
E28 has always been a sleek sleeper. The best part of the video is the burnout intro. Brake, Gas, and Clutch equal tire smoke.
I love E28’s too. A 535i 5 speed was my first BMW back in 1989.
Thanks Mike, now I want an e28 once again. Love to see this kinda throwback feature, fun change from the norm on the channel.
I bought my first e28 many year ago because of you!
Now I also have a extraordinary E28 M5, thank you so much for what you do!
😊
Love em!!!
Awesome video, having been around as a 10/11 year old when these beautiful machines were launched I have never stopped loving them.
Love the overall build on this E28. I love mine and can't wait for the season to start here in the UK.
2:17 did not realise that BMW filmed an advert for the E28 in New Zealand (right hand drive). Love the video.
As long as it's something you're passionate about, like the E28, make the video. The quality and the love you have for the car shows. So definitely keep doing these!
I had an '85 E28 535is. Hot chipped, short shifter, gigantic cold air intake. OMG that big 6 was .... smoooooooooth.....
much appreciated, thank you!
I'm a big BMW fan, mostly of the 90s and 00s but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Love the presentation.
Loving this channel more and more. This E28 is just magic
South African here, my dad owned two e28 520i and eventually got a beautiful red 535i.
Loved it! I've got an E46 M3 but the quality of the build of this car makes me want one.
Best Part: historical context and videography
Opportunities: longer ride along/noise like smoking tire, more info on chassis and drive train mods, before and after photos and some commentary from the owner to break up Mike's narration
Loving all those old New Zealanad filmed E28 advert footage.
Kingston Flyer train in the background.
Just got mine!!! It’s a 528e but can’t wait to try out a build for everyone to enjoy
This is a slick build. I personally own a Mint-Grün 77 E12 525 (so no i). It's a time-capsule and my goals is to keep it time-correct
More videos like this! With the loss of magazines and even many feature websites this type of content has been largely absent from automotive media for the past few years. Miss seeing y’all’s cars at events on the east coast. I also need some good, old fashioned motivation for my recently purchased E36. Keep it up
I always loved the 528/535 from the ‘80s. From a guy who own a 325e in 1988.
I hope your life has taken an upturn since those times. Have a great year buddy 🙏
Keep up the incredible work you're doing.
just bought my first BMW; its a 1986 E30 325es cant wait to make it into something like this!
Loved my E28, an '87 535i. Even with the slushbox it was a great car to drive and they just look great.
I bought a 535is with only 50,000 miles and daylied it for over a decade.
I absolutely loved it and wish I still had it.
This is the OG Stanceworks content I love. Just like the Blog. Keep them coming.
