This particular car hasn't been started in 8 years, but supposedly ran before it sat due to a transmission issue.

Quick tip, take some 3/8" OD tygon tubing and snake it down into the tank. Take another 2 foot section justinto the fill hole, wrap a shop towel around the hoses and jam that rag in the fillneck to seal. You can blow into the 2 foot section or use compressor air set to 20psi or so to get the gas to start flowing out the siphon tube. Totally keeps you from getting a mouth full of gas.
Katie - I have watched most of your videos, I think. Finally saw something I disagree with. Water in the engine can happen anytime. If you short out the ignition with a hose and then it won't start, you won't know if it is the water or something else. It didn't look that bad.
I would first turn the engine over by hand, If it won't, DON'T BUY IT !! If it makes nasty sounds, also a problem. then look at spark plugs. They tell the real story of the engine. Check for spark while the plug are out. Also check compression. Turn on headlights to check battery charge. Bump starter once.
Cosmetic always last. And I WILL be watching till the end. THANKS !

Additionally you could put a few drops of transmission fluid (AT) into each cylinder just to help compression and to make sure you don't fully destroy your rings. Honestly the BEST THING to do is to spin the oil pump with a small impact wrench ...if you could reach it.

Ya You did mention to turn the engine over first but you saved it to last. And if it is a manual trans, just put it in a higher gear and push the car a foot forward or back.. Thanks for the video !

I just found your channel through another guy's channel and I subscribed. I'm motivated to try to get my 93 gt hatchback running. I bought it brand new June 93 and use to race it in the socal scene in the 90s. I had a prototype turbo, headers and alltrac hood and z3 fender molds made for carbon fiber and then it got pirated cuz I gave up on trying to start a performance shop for celicas lol. It's been sitting in my backyard since 2005 but this channel gave me inspiration to get it running again :)
I'm interested to see if it starts, my car has been sitting under a canopy since 2003 and the car is a 2002. I'm kinda scared to try to start it

First critique I would offer is Do Not wash the engine off with water you are possibly creating more problems with the ignition wiring. Draining the fuel tank and squirting Flogging oil into each cylinder. Meanwhile you could have tested the battery for a good charge or replaced it first. I think check oil level but I wouldn’t waste time and money on an oil change if you’re not sure the engine will turn over and start.
Loved the video my M3 has been sitting without oil in it for 2 years now since i have been doing a ground up restoration on it, not manny videos that show the proper way to start up a motor after sitting

Love your videos Katie,most of these cars in the 90s came with a antisiphoning device in the tank so no matter how hard one tries its not gonna go all the way in, the nice touch is that fuel pump under the seat you mention, most cars have the tank in the back so you have to drop the tank to get to the pump and what happens is everytime a car gets parked for longevity that dam tank is always full lol , having it under the seat is a godsend, some Hondas have a little trapdoor in the trunk where you can access the pump also and take the gas out if one chooses to do so.
Lie, use a hard vinyl tubing to sh!t on the “anti siphoning“
Step 1: check for rats nest/ Hornets
Step 2: change all the fluids
Step 3: sad the plugs and points
Step 4: connect the battery and pray it does catch fire
Cool beans! I used that same siphon on my 240 a few months ago. Was only able to used it once before the gasoline ate up the rubber plunger on the inside. Dat Harbor Freight life:-)

Those the do not have the mechanical know how to turn the car over with a breaker bar you can always put it in gear and tow it 10 ft or so

If an Audi has been sitting for just under two years with a full tank of gas and I put sta-bil fuel stabilizer in the tank before storage, would I still need to drain the gas? Would some gaskets have dried out such as valve cover gasket, cylinder head gaskets, and all that to a point where they may leak? I had all those gaskets replaced in April 2021 so they only had a couple thousand miles on them before storage. I also wonder if the tires would have developed a flat spot, brand new tires installed in October car sat in January, so also a few thousand miles on the.
Even the car Honda Civic 2010 sitting in 2 Years. Also with Winter session. Pl suggest what needs to do.

It's pretty simple to remove fuel tank, I had a 1990 ford escort and had to bypass the fuel pump on the ecu as well as the safety fuel cut off switch in the boot was giving me shit at random times :P.
If not starting an engine for long time then it's best to add a tablespoon of oil to each cylinder with a turkey baster (remove spark plugs first), can add bit of diesel.
Turn crank with ratchet or spanner by hand slowly with plugs out.
Do slow rotations of the crank hourly then leave over night or a few days, siphon out oil from cylinders, add spark plugs, oil and air filter.
Put in gear, rock back and forth
Then shes good to start!!!!
If you add 1 Tablespoon of oil per cylinder and you hand crank the engine, how would you "siphon" oil out of your cylinders after that? Have you ever done that before? And siphoned out any meaningful amount of oil?
I've whetted my cylinders after they went dry ( from car sitting roo long and I lost compression) by adding 5 ml which is equal to 1 teaspoon which is equal to 1/3 of a Tablespoon... was sufficient
@@lawpenner Take plugs out and start by battery, this will ensure most the oil is gone!
I was waiting for the addendum about pulling the motor over by hand with the spark plugs OUT so you're not turning against engine compression or starting the car inadvertently.

I parked my car in my hometown house garage I covered it properly before leaving and I add jack to lift up the car lil bit to maintain the wheels before leaving I close every spot where the insects and Mouses and get in the garage in the first place what should I keep in mind before starting the my Car
I also added fuel maintainers left the fuel cleaner inside the glove box so when I come back I have the it available
Nice! Cool to see a new how to start a sitting car video. Mine hasn’t been driven on the road since in/before May 2016 but I did run it a bit over a year ago.
I replaced the head gaskets and it’s almost time to finally get her running after all this time, I’m mainly waiting on my plenum gaskets since the kit I ordered was for the newer 3.1Ls.
Thanks for the tip to hand crank, I need to do that once I get oil in it and it’ll help it not be as dry of a start up for sure. My car’s the same way about having to remove the passenger’s side wheel and the fender covers to get to the crankshaft bolt.
Assuming the force it took to hand crank it back when I had the heads off was normal (good feeling it was, I was using a 1/2” ratchet), the only red flag I had was that a piston fell back in when I went to hand crank. Hopefully it was just from sitting with the heads off.

Yep, that looks like my cb7 accord engine bay. 10 years since the last service records in 2013 and start up. Just need a starter then we can crank her up!
Boy, I am in process of doing all of this to an Isuzu Rodeo. I thought it was rough, but not in comparison to the old Celica! You are a brave one fixing that baby up!

Ooo how exciting! If you can find a 92-93 I would definitely go that route since they have the facelift and more features. Also, there were some mechanical improvements made as well over the 90-91. I'm a fan of the GT-S hatch because of the looks(widebody), & the additional features in the interior like power seats, leather option, etc. They are the most difficult to find in good condition though. The GT & GT-S have the larger 2.2 motor and the ST has the smaller 1.6L with less power.
I am currently learning this as I trying bring 87 Lincoln back to life. Question. Will my car start to act up a soon I start to take it out on the road? Because mine doesn't move when I press the accelerator and pulls when I let go, and I hear a clunking metal underneath the car.
Hi Joe, this is just the beginning of getting a car back on the road. All of the fluids, belts, hoses, sometimes tires will need to be replaced and a safety check done before its road ready. Axles and brakes should be inspected too. Good luck on your project! Hope you get it back on the road soon

You changed the oil before you knew if it would even start ? Did you look at the dipstick oil first ?
@ 8:15 what is that metal device on where the oil filter sits? is it for an oil gauge?? The two cars ive worked on didnt have one from factor. Very interested!
I'm not sure what you are talking about to be honest. I don't see anything jumping out at me. Could be a difference in the late version 93 vs an earlier year of the gen?
I have a 2008 Explorer that has sat for about 3 years. I'm about to go through this process soon. I enjoyed your video, but I am confused about one thing you said... First you said to turn the crank by hand clockwise, then a minute later you said counterclockwise. Which is it? Also, I was told by the guy who sold me the fogging oil that I would need to change the spark plugs afterwards because the plugs would become fouled from the fogging oil. Is that true?
On this engine ,2.2 5SFE, it is clockwise! I didn't realize I contradicted myself, thank you for pointing that out. I can't confirm whether or not they will be fouled, but mine worked just fine in this car after I used fogging oil. If it's been sitting for a long time, it wouldn't hurt to change them anyway since they aren't too expensive :)
Open the gas cap and let the pressure OUT ? I always thought is was the sound of suction because when the gas leaves the tank, a partial vacuum is created. But you know the gas cap is good after all those years.
I have a 1967 Wolseley Hornet that has been sitting for 30 years.
Am I right in thinking once I fill it with fresh oil to get it running, there'd be a much shorter period between getting the engine running and the next oil change than usual, just because of the potential for lots of engine crud or corrosion being worked through those first few miles?
I would say yes! Good to cycle the oil through and do a change
My car sitting for 10months it won't start, what could be? Before it was perfect, the fuel pump make sounds as normal, checked the sparkplugs , they were dirty with lot of carbon, so I cleaned them, new battery 🔋 , could be the gas evaporated? Because it was almost empty when left
Great
There are 5 main things to get an engine to start.
1. fuel
2. air
3. spark
4. compression
5. timing
of course changing the fluids is also very important and you did do that very well... but there are also quite a few things that i didnt see you do or check in the video.
1. since the starter didnt even turn it could be because of either the starter itself, a bad ignition system (distributor), or there could be a blown fuse in the fuse box so its always good to make sure you have good fuses.
2. once it does start to turn but doesnt start, make sure that fuel is getting into the cylinders with good fuel pressure, the air filter isnt clogged up with crap, the spark plugs are good, there arent any cracks in the engine or huge leaks that could affect the compression (you can get a compression tester kit for like 30-40$), and that the timing belt on put on correctly because belts tend to slip and the timing could also be off.
3. after that there should literally be nothing else that could stop your engine from running.

Hi Tammy, yes for most people that would be the case, but the previous owner tried to start the car right before I bought it so I knew the engine wasn't locked.
@@KatiesGarage okay just asking a question that's all you did not state that on your video and if you did I'm sorry I guess I missed that part but it's nice to see a woman working on their vehicle or vehicles and knowing what they're talking about besides me I'm sorry he probably deal with as much misery that I do with men acting like we're stupid and we don't know what we're talking about good luck with you and your new project hopefully I could get mine done and my project has been for over 15 years it's a Chevrolet Stepside Silverado 94 1500 350 not a Vortec I was so close of having that truck done it's for my son it was supposed to be for his 16th birthday somebody sabotaged it and never got the chance to give it to him but I still have not give up and my son is 22 years old it's thrown to rods out the oil pan and I have not been able to afford a new engine for his truck to give it to him I never got the chance yet I hope and pray one day that I will be able to get the funds to get a new engine to be able to give it to him but it's looking pretty Grim for me but I have not gave up and I will never give up until I don't have no more breath to be able to keep on going to try to do it for my son hopefully that makes any sense it's hard to talk about

Oof that air filter looks terrible.. I’m guessing you vacuumed the engine bay out before you started working. Have you ever tried to pump oil out of the dipstick with one of those siphon things? I used them to change the oil myself on my Audis and jeeps..can’t do it though when engines don’t have a dipstick obviously.. but it’s awesome cause you don’t have to get under the car and you don’t have to buy a new drain plug. You should change the oil regular style once every 10k but yeah the dip stick drain is pretty sweet when you have a low car
Do you really need to vacuum and clean the motor? Would a leaf blower work? Also are we to believe you can't pump the old gas out?
It’s something i personally like to do since it was full of spiders and rodent poop. A leaf blower could be a good option if that’s what you have. Not sure about your gas comment as I did siphon the fuel from the tank.
Cool I have 1# car that been setting For 5 years In crank thing something was wrong with because somebody in my family left at a gestation in i had to pay my lot money to pick it up and storage it away from my family shame I'm glad that it still work under my noise i don't only needed no head ace I need only answer Know I need and detailer.

New Subscriber here. Question @Katie's Garage Had to park my '02 Camry 1 year ago due to lack of funds (mechanic quoted me $1,800.) Needed timing chain replacement. With only 202k miles on it, want to get it going again. Do you think I'll have to replace all the rubber gaskets like people are telling me? Thank you :)
Sorry I missed your question! Probably too late but... If you have leaks definitely replace. I'd recommend replacing them regardless though. It's a good preventative maintenance to do either way due to the amount of labor it takes just to replace the timing chain.
You mean hand turn the torque side half shaft?

you could probably check the cylinders with an endoscope first and also soak them with wd40 before turning anything?
and maybe also need to flush out the whole fuel system and replace the fuel filter to not get any old gunk into the engine?
i used some 3-4 year old yellow petrol on a lawn mower and it basically seized up the rings and also broke its plastic camshaft gears, so u should def just burn the old fuel in a bonfire or smth, which will be much cheaper than buying new parts for the whole engine

I know nothing about any of this. I have a 2012 chrysler 200 that's been sitting for 5 years. We hooked up the jumper cables just to see how much gas was in it & it says empty... should we try to turn it over? I'll have to take it to a mechanic after that, but no one will give me a ballpark figure on getting it going. I'm guessing it'll be a lot cheaper if they don't have to drain the gas tank...
Draining the tank is relatively easy so I don’t think it would change the cost that much, but they probably can’t give you a ballpark because they don’t know what it’ll take to get it running and drivable. Too many variables unfortunately

I have a car that been setting for 4 year a 2004 Chrysler PT cruiser
Have a 2016 wrx with 500 miles on it. Been sitting 5 years. Tires are gone to shit. Do you think the engine could be seized? Original synthetic oil and gas.... Almost a new car. Parked in Florida so no extreme weather.
I would try to turn the crank by hand first. Should be easy on a Subaru. If it doesn't turn, you have an issue. The only reason why I didn't hand crank this one first is that I knew the previous owner had tried to start it and said it had slow cranked and I had pre-lubricated the cylinders for a week or so with fogging spray.
@@KatiesGarage is a seized engine common? I don't think much air gets in an engine with direct injection. Maybe more common on cars with a carburator?

@@PressRecordVids Oh I actually still have it, I use a little bit of it in my lawnmower at a time, but we also have a hazardous waste facility here that I take chemicals to like oil, antifreeze, etc.

Hi John! Thank you and great questions! Cleaning the air filter is a great idea. This particular car has a short ram air intake so the filter is exposed rather than inside of a housing, so nothing to check there.
I saved this car from a trip to the junkyard. I don’t know why the previous owner didn’t try to keep it running, but he didn’t get rid of it sooner because it was sentimental to him as it belonged to his mother before she passed.
He did have children and another car that he was working on, so probably a lack of time and motivation. I think we can all relate! I still go out and start it now and again and have been doing little projects. It’s happy in my garage right now.

I think I would have done more than him though because you know stuff gets in the way even if you have a big yard? To push it rather than starting it is a lot harder?

I live in New England / Connecticut & people leave cars that aren’t getting driven a lot to just sit. Why? I have no idea? If it isn’t worth keeping now why keep it at all?
My next door neighbor is really odd. He always keeps some “project car” in his garage while his daily drivers sit outside in the elements? He’s had 2 that he never fixed & they eventually get “sold” or IMO get junked. Then gets another project car that takes up space in his garage.
He now has a project inside & a Dodge pick up truck dead in his driveway. That leaves him little space for his other car & guests.
Thats' why i don't do a oil change before i know the engine is good and oil does not brake down so bad that you can not even check a engine without a oil change but gas does, so i would flush the fuel lines before trying to start the engine.
How important is removing the gas? Can i skip this step?
Depends on how long it’s been sitting. If it’s old it won’t ignite well and there may be corrosion that you pump into your fuel system.
If you have a car specially a old one sitting for a long time with ethanol in it, the pump more than likely and the tank (if its metal) will be toast,when you park a car and you know its gonna be parked a long time there is a product called "Stabil" i believe and there are others also that will keep your fuel somewhats fresh for a long time in case you need to bring the car back to life but generally you want to get that gas out if you can if its gonna be parked a long time.
Gas degrades over time and it turns into "varnish" , it smells really bad and it gets kinda gooey,the best advice you can possibly get is the following, if you have a car that you really love and your gonna keep forever dont use ethanol,most cities and towns in the U.S have a few stations that will sell "real gas", you have to search them out,it will cost you extra, sometimes 50 cents more than what you normally use up to a dollar but in the long run it will save you thousands in repairs.
I have a few old Mustangs and after spending about a grand on each replacing the tank,the pump , the sending unit and the injectors because of ethanol usage they have never seen ethanol again (and wont) , i wouldn't put ethanol in a lawn mower but truly new cars are designed to work with that junk,they are fine.
Just bought a 1990 jaguar xj6 sovereign that’s been sitting 10 years😂 the guy I bought it off has already tried to start it with all the OG 10 year old fluid is that bad😂
I hope you disconnected the battery before opening the fuel tank with the electrical connection right there.
Battery was dead many many years ago. However, yes the battery was out.

Personally I would have bench tested the starter. before trying to start it by the key.

That air filter must go. It's a crumbling mess and will only get sucked into the engine.
Absolutely. It is gone now. I switched back to the OEM air filter box this summer.
