The Gut-Brain Connection

  • Duke University researcher Diego Bohorquez and colleagues have identified the neural circuitry that connects the gut with the brain. This pathway is spanned by a single synapse, capable of relaying a signal from gut to brain in 100 milliseconds. This newly discovered pathway is probably exploited by pathogens, and will almost certainly lead to new therapies.
Video produced by The Bohórquez Laboratory in the Duke University Departments of Medicine and Neurobiology. More research details available at www.gutbrains.com
    𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐁𝐨𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐳 𝐋𝐚𝐛
The ambition of Bohorquez Lab is to learn how to treat the brain from the gut. Researchers are focused on dissecting the neural circuits that transform signals from food and/or bacteria in the gut into electrical inputs that modulate behaviors like the desire to eat. The laboratory is built on multidisciplinary expertise in viral vector genomics, neurophysiology, behavioral phenotyping, organoid cultures, and neuroimaging. From human miniguts to its own 2Photon -The Wraith- Bohorquez Lab has the pipeline optimized to test ideas from single cells to whole animal behavior.

I had horrendous depression for 10 years. Zoloft did not work. I traced it to foods I was eating (milk, eggs, sunflower seeds, turkey), which gave me severe depression for three days. Sunflower seeds gave me depression and severe, diffuse back pains. One day I had a nasty sinus infection that felt like heart failure. I couldn't catch my breath and felt tightness in my chest. But I was aware that my sinuses felt slightly sore. It took three different powerful antibiotics to get rid of the infection. Then I dared eat foods that gave me depression. It was gone! Three years later and I haven't had any depression. Unfortunately, the experience was traumatizing and I have some PTSD. Just the thought of that severe depression terrifies me. I don't talk about it to anyone directly.

PrasanPadale Eat an anti-inflammatory diet. Avoid food sensitivities (can get your gut checked), get lots of vegetable fiber, and eat more fermented foods for probiotics. Also, eat slowly and chew your food until it’s a paste, kind of like baby food. Warm liquids such as lemon ginger water or herbal tea help the gut, too.

This makes a lot of sense that the gut and brain are connected. I mean your gut needs to tell your brain if you're full, sick, eating, hungry, etc. It makes sense that sometimes this connection can go haywire sometimes, since it's constantly communicating with the brain.

What to eat to promote a balanced, healthy gut?
Intestinal health is directly linked to the well-being of your whole body. The gut requires a balance of bacteria, which live mostly in the large intestine and part of the small intestine. It’s important to pay attention to our gut health as it goes beyond ‘regularity’ and bloating.
The digestive system is the “gateway” to other parts of the body, delivering nutrients to it. A healthy gut contains a dominance of “good” bacteria which produces butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid. These bacteria are dependent on fiber, which act as their fuel.
The gut signals to the brain through nerves and hormones, which supports overall emotional and mental health. The millions of neurons in the gut is why it’s often referred to as “the second brain.”
      What are gut microbiota?
Each person has over trillions of microbial cells in the #colon. This makes up an individual’s microbiota. These healthy microbiomes are the key to good health, and, through lifestyle and diet choices, you can promote a good balance.
There are factors that throw the microbiota out of balance, such as medications and environmental stressors. For a healthy gut, it’s essential to exercise regularly, reduce stress levels, ensure adequate sleep, and eat foods that are high in fiber.
The gut requires us to eat more fibers and less processed and ultra-processed foods that are typically energy-dense, high in salt, sugar, Omega-6 and saturated fatty acids with low nutritional value. Aim to consume a rich variety of fruits and vegetables, beans and whole grains, all of which are high in their own different types of fibers. A key goal to a healthy gut is diversity; eat a variety of different plants and types of fibers.
Choose foods that haven’t undergone a great deal of processing so as not to starve the “good” bacteria. However, this fiber intake isn’t always easy to obtain, and the average person does not meet the recommended fiber intake, which is why food supplements are of great importance.
      Balance your microbiota with LeanShake
Just 231 calories per serving, you can source Zinzino’s fiber blend, proteins and over 25 vitamins and minerals easily with LeanShake. LeanShake is a meal replacement that helps with weight loss , muscle gain, and balancing your microbiome, designed to stimulate and boost the “good” bacteria (and outgrow the “bad” ones). The good bacteria contribute in many important bodily functions, such as fermenting dietary fibers, producing vitamins and educating our immune system. A healthy gut is essential for a healthy body.
LeanShake is high in fibers with the ZinoBiotic blend, offering more than standard options that typically only contain one or two types, which isn’t enough for our daily intake. LeanShake introduces a resistant starch blend (from corn), oat beta glucans, inulin, fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS) and psyllium husk fibers to the whole colon to promote several bowel functions.
LeanShake helps improve the bacterial population in your colon, while reducing a spike in blood sugar after meals and maintaining healthy cholesterol levels. It’s is free from soy, has a low glycemic load and the sweeteners and flavors are from natural sources.
With dozens of EFSA-approved health claims, LeanShake is an effective tool for losing and maintaining weight, maintaining muscle, and re-balancing that all-important microbiome, which is a micro-ecosystem that controls so many of the functions in our body. Hence, it’s critical we take good care of it.
      LeanShake, no yo-yo, diet
LeanShake is a delicious, nutritious meal replacement that simultaneously balances your microbiota for a healthy gut. It’s an intelligent mix of vitamins and minerals that help fuel your energy and support many of the necessary functions in your body, from head to toe.

I am told to eat carbs, to help the migraine attack, what I was doing was irritating my gut with all the gluten, my body could not digest and it caused more inflammation. I just learnt from this descriptive presentation about the "vagus nerve", I had no idea, there was a gut and brain connection. This explains the mood swings, depression and anxiety. They do say, healthy gut equates to healthy brain and healthy body. I wish I knew this 14 years ago to present.

      @yogitopa369 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

The Vagues Nerve is connected & runs through the 7 Chakras which is the 7 small glands that attached to 6 organs. Also known as the Endocrine System. Pituitary & Pineal (3rd eye) in the Brain, Thyroid in the Throat Thymus on the Heart, Solar Plexus on Pancreas, the Sacral Chakra connected to the Sexually Organs & the Adrenal Gland attached to the Kidney organs. This is known in ancient culture long ago as the main current from gut to brain.
      -
Cold showers stimulate the Nerve, best in morning, hot showers at night. They are also stimulated through music, food, yoga, meditation It's essential that we sit feet parallel to hips when eliminating waste aka shitting. Digestive system must be completely straight to fully eliminate waste or it will build up over time. 10-20 years can give you lbs/kgs of waste.
      -
Anyways, that's why it's good to have this intelligent connection to live more vibrantly. Singing is also one of the most powerful ways of cleansing, purifying & liberating ourselves from the world things. Hope this helped, bless up
