Long story but I think it's worth the read and is relevant to the song. I met a girl when we were both 10 years old. Through time and distance we stayed friends for nearly 30 years. We never dated, though we did talk about it. She was diagnosed in her 30s with Cystic Fibrosis and pacreatitis. We lived in the same apartment building on different floors for a couple of years and I would take that opportunity to care for her in anyway I could. She would have good days where she felt great and other days she would spend on the floor of her bathroom. I spent many of those days next to her. I moved from our home state of Michigan to California a few years later. On Thanksgiving of that first year I came home for two weeks. She, hospitalized now, left her hospital bed and had her mom drive her 2 hours to surprise me. I went back to California and she went back to the hospital. While there she said, "Promise me when we both turn 40 that we will get married and spend my final days together." She turned 40 in June of that year. I was to turn 40 in mid August. By the time that summer rolled around I had moved back within a few miles of her. Her 40th birthday came, we spent it with her friends and family. She returned to the hospital in July but came home on hospice care a couple weeks later. She passed away 9 days before my 40th birthday. While she was in the hospital that last time in July I recorded a version of "Imagine" for her. She played it for her mom and the nurses and I guess there wasn't a dry eye in that room. It's been over 8 years since her death and I still think about her everyday. Today I saw that you reacted to this song, and I smiled. Jenn would have liked your reaction. Thanks for reading!

Back story...In the late '60s, John was invited to an art exhibition. It was very extestential art. In the middle of the room, there was a ladder. He climbed the ladder, and on the ceiling, in very small letters was written the word "yes." John later said in an interview that if it had been "no" or something flippant or negative, he would not have thought twice. But based on its positive message, he asked to meet the artist. Her name...Yoko Ono.
    (yes)

It’s not the job of an artist to be, as you say, “realistic”-whatever realistic means anyway. The job of an artist is to hold a mirror up to society. Great artists, like John, use their talent to not only move us emotionally with their music but to make us think. He wasn’t telling us not to have possessions; he was just asking us to stretch our minds a little and imagine what the world would be like if we didn’t kill each other over money and possessions.

It's true, human nature shows that his vision in this song will never come to pass, at least anytime soon, but change can only happen if such a world can be imagined, as in this song. There will never be "perfection", but everyone can at least strive for it.

This song was referenced in the popular sitcom, “WKRP in Cincinnati” many years ago. Great episode!
A self-righteous preacher and his congregation, who hated rock and roll, were organizing boycotts against companies that supported the radio station WKRP. They saw rock and roll lyrics as obscene and ungodly.
Mr. Carlson, the station manager, met with the preacher, and he had the preacher read aloud the lyrics to “Imagine”. Mr. Carlson then asked the preacher if there were any obscenities in the lyrics. The Preacher couldn’t name any, but he condemned the words “no possessions” as communism.
Mr. Carlson then lectured the preacher on how the lyrics only had IDEAS and no obscenties, and he chastised the preacher for his hypocricy. The preacher left the station very unhappy. YAY!! 😊

Queen wrote most of their songs. I believe they are the only band that every member wrote a song that would eventually hit number one. But most of their songs were collaborations between all four members but they made a deal that whomever came up with the basic idea for the song would get writing credit.
The Freddie Mercury biopic movie Bohemian Rhapsody has a great scene about how they came up with the best for We Will Rock You.

Although it may be naive to say let's just live in peace, I believe it's helpful to put this song in context of it's period. This song was released during the Vietnam war. By the time this song came out, there were many Americans protesting the war, including many other musicians. Walter Cronkite called the war a stalemate back in 1968. The idea that it was time to get out was in the mainstream by this time. John's message, with this and "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" was simple - just stop fighting and the war will be over. Eventually, that is what happened.

Humans are a herd animal, and evolved to live together as a community. We ALWAYS fight over ideology, religion, land, possessions. This song is pure communism, without anything to fight and die for, we will live in peace.

Well, Yoko Ono was John Lennon's 2nd wife and she was Japanese, which is why she got a lot of hate... Also, because their affair created a huge scandal in the 60's while The Beatles were active & the accused her of breaking up the Beatles (Paul McCartney's first wife Linda McCartney also got a lot of hate because she married a Beatle and also joined his solo band in the 70's)
John Lennon was an art student as well as a musician before the Beatles got together... Paul McCartney was his musical partner and original Beatles bassist Stu Sutcliffe was his art partner... Sutcliffe left the Beatles in 1961 and he tragically died in 1962 from a brain aneurysm.
Meanwhile, John Lennon got his girlfriend Cynthia pregnant in 1962 and he agreed to marry her... Their son Julian Lennon was born in 1963 just as The Beatles were taking off and John was not faithful on the road.
Years later, The Beatles ended their touring career in 1966 and focused on cultural and musical endeavors by 1967... It was around this time that John Lennon went to an art exhibit and met Yoko Ono, who was an unorthodox artist of expression... but she was married as well and had a daughter. That didn't stop them from having an affair and when John's wife Cynthia caught them together, she allegedly went and slept w/ one of his best friends... John filed for divorce citing infidelity but withdrew it after he discovered that Yoko was pregnant w/ him.
    Sadly, Yoko miscarried soon after.
In 1969, John and Cynthia's divorce was finalized and John Lennon married Yoko Ono and even changed his middle name to Ono... He and Yoko did events together promoting Peace and activism against the Vietnam war at the time and even started a solo project The Plastic Ono Band... It caused some issues when Yoko was always at Beatles recording sessions in the studio and Paul McCartney was unhappy w/ the dynamic... In any case, the Beatles were fracturing by 1969 and John Lennon announced that he was leaving the band.
In 1970, Paul McCartney went public w/ The Beatles' breakup by suing John, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, to break up the contracts and divide the band's assets between the 4 members equally... McCartney said it was to keep their manager Allen Klein from stealing from the band and he had to sue the band members because he didn't sign a contract w/ Klein.
John Lennon and Yoko Ono were very prolific in the early 70's in their anti-war activism and were targeted in the US by the Nixon administration... John Lennon was ordered to be deported from the USA in 1972 and he fought the order legally... However, his infidelity resulted in a separation from Yoko Ono in 1972.
John Lennon spent months in California doing drugs and drinking and was lost without Yoko, who stayed in NYC and kept busy w/ her art projects... Finally, John Lennon was asked to perform at an Elton John concert in NYC and Yoko Ono was invited to attend... The pair reunited and reconciled... Their son Sean Lennon was born in 1975... John Lennon finally beat his deportation order and obtain legal status in the USA after the 1974 fall of the Nixon administration.
Between 1975 and 1980, John Lennon did not do any music... He, Yoko and Sean lived in an apartment in NYC and worked in the arts scene... He also began to mend his relationship w/ his son Julian. In 1980, he and Yoko finally recorded a new album 'Double fantasy' and were looking forward to promoting it in 1981 when John Lennon was killed in late '80 by a deranged fan.
Yoko Ono (age 91) never remarried since... Thankfully, she and Julian Lennon eventually made peace and her son Sean and half-brother Julian are reportedly close...

It is a beautiful and thoughtful songs and one of Lennon's best and most iconic, I think. Really enjoyed your reaction and engagement with the song.
Yoko Ono is often blamed for the breakup of The Beatles, but really there were too many strong personalities and talent, and creative tensions within The Beatles to last forever. Those factors produced some of the most iconic and influential songs and innovative styles that they produced. My dad has always described The Beatles as being a creative and ultimately self-destructive whirlwind that, much like the tornado in Wizard of Oz, brought color and creativity to the world.
John Lennon's death, I think, has put a degree of rose-tinted glasses on a lot of people's views on his life. Many descriptions of him tend to skip over the fact that, at least in the 1960's, but I've heard later too, he had quite an ego, a terrible temper, and was at times abusive (I don't know off the top of my head whether it was physically, emotionally, mentally, or some combination thereof) to both his first wife and to Yoko.

Many people, especially Beatles fans, feel as though Yoko Ono was the reason for the Beatles' break-up. But it was actually creative differences that did the deed. The Beatles were headed for disintegration long before Yoko's appearance on the scene. After the break-up, John got even more deeply into his religion, evidently though using his celebrity to bring about social change was more important than touching people with his music. I, for one, wish he had poured more of himself into the Beatles in later years and affected the public norms in that way. The Beatles changed the world in many ways; however, and in John's defense, it continues to be all but impossible for any four humans to agree on anything. And as you said, our ever-changing societal programming seems to preclude any kind of fix for this. Thanks for the well thought out response. It's always a pleasure to watch your reactions. Keep up the great work.😊

Also, oddly enough I jliterally came here from your latest reaction which was Photograph by Def Leppard, and as you mentioned, john Lennon was shot in NY by a mentally unstable person, don't really want to say a fan, but in some strange way yes. Anyway, thanks for the reactions. take care friend!

Before Yoko, the Beatles were a team working as one. When she came into the Scene, she convinced John the HE was the group's leader, and instead of Them working together, it became "John/Yoko vs. the other 3"... she demanded that she be at all of the recording sessions and if she decided something, it usually over-rode the rest of the Band, as John would always side with her. She got him into Social Activism even had him return a medal he was given )by the Queen) because of Britaain's "Colonialism".

I was born AFTER John's death. My understanding is that Beatles fans felt that Yoko 'broke up the Beatles and changed John'. Which people change on their own. Likely the Beatles would have split up regardless of Yoko and John meeting. Were the masses ready for Avant-garade Art and Neo Dada? Probably not. I dont think people were flocking for John Cage's 4'33" piano piece. Some 2 decades later, Yoko and other Dadaists surely were niche and not everyone's cup of tea.
You might have seen parts but Yoko is probably most famous for Cut Piece (1964) and Bed Sit-In (aka Hair Peace, Bed Peace) (1971). For all of the negativity (from Beatles fans), I doubt they are complaining about Yoko’s most prominent performances.
Honestly I would judge Yoko Ono on their entire breath of work. Do you like Yoko’s less experimental pieces? People born before 1960 and who remember the Beatles like ‘it was yesterday’ or something, they are probably biased if they are talking poorly about Yoko.
    /hot take

Wife-beater is a word that soon or later will come out from comments when talking about Lennon (that and a lot of hate from detractors). Ok:
John Lennon was the founder of the band, that was conformed by him and other kids in the 50s when he decided to recruit Paul McCartney and soon after, George Harrison. After a few changes, and the very shocking death of one of the members, the ultimate band lineup got a contract with EMI and became an absolute sensation, the biggest and most influential band in history and the most impactful cultural act in the 60s scene.
John Lennon was a genius as a songwriter and an extraordinary human being in all his dimension. However, like many rock stars, he was controversial, incendiary, contradictory, faced with lot of pain, family deaths, trauma, an absent father, had drug abuse issues, prone to get into fights at pubs, he also reportedly hit once his then fiancée at his early 20s in a jealousy fit, she dumped him and reconciled 3 months later and got married and divorced a few years later. His little son, Julian, suffered the consequences of the disintegration of his family. Later on John met in Yoko and got married and he changed many things, prioritizing his marriage before The Beatles. John Lennon, perhaps my favorite artist after The Beatles, use to get lot of hate from his detractors because of his early violent incident with his girlfriend and for neglecting his first son. For that reason, over the years people have claimed that Lennon was an abusive violent man that beat his wife behind close doors throughout his marriage, without any evidence of that claim, even though his first wife has clarified that it occurred once. Nevertheless, the rumors persist.

    @9:23
I feel most songs, I want to hear it, read the lyrics, listen to it again with the lyrics being display. ONLY then I might watch a music video (with some exceptions).
Music videos, like other pieces of film, often greatly limit and focus on specific elements of a song. I see music video as interpretation from the base work (the writing). That I want to enjoy my idea of what the music is and not think about the visuals that some director had in mind.
For example, Chandelier by Sia. You have Ryan Heffington's fabulous choreographed work. Both Sia Furler and Daniel Askill are directors for the video. And Maddie Ziegler's performance. This is common for the video to have many parties joining in to reinterpret the music. Maybe Sia and Ryan sat down and really hashed out the energy before Ryan built up the movements for Maddie. I’m assuming Sia more or less trusted Ryan and asked them to do their magic. Was the DP and editors working with Ryan before filming day? These are all questions that if answer, probably make a song’s essences less ‘pure’. And hence why I try to wait to watch a music video (If I would watch one).

BISS, I've said something for a VERY long time, I believe that EVERY single world leader, of EVERY single country or tribe of humans, should sit down and listen to TWO songs over and over again until they understand the meaning of them!!!😮
This song "Imagine", by John Lennon, is one of the songs!!
The second is "What's Going On" by Marvin Gaye!!
I truly believe that if THAT could happen we might achieve world peace!! ✌️🙏❤

By the way... long time ago you did a movie reaction to Forrest Gump... after he comes out of the army he appears on a tv talk-show and the guest beside him is John Lennon. Forrest starts talking and, long-story-short, he and John come up with the words of this (historic/anthem) song together, lol... in keeping with the rest of the movie where it seems like Forrest had a hand in so much of Americana history 😂. You should rewatch that scene.

Yoko Ono is a avant-garde artist that got her start in New York City before meeting John Lennon. In the late 60s she had a gallery in London, in which John attended and became infatuated her and her work. The two started an affair with John eventually divorcing his then wife Cynthia to be with Yoko 24/7. John had a much stronger desire to be with Yoko Ono than to continue being in the Beatles, who were going through a very turbulent time due to bad business decisions. John married Yoko in late 1969 and changed his name to John Ono Lennon and left the Beatles. They to moved to New York City eventually settling down and having a son together. After the birth of his second son, John retired from the music industry to be with Yoko and his new family.
To this day, Yoko Ono still live in the Dakota Apartments in New York City where John was murdered on December 8th, 1980.
