  • The Beatles song, Penny Lane is one of their most famous, but do you know its meaning? And who wrote it? You may be surprised.
    Many people think that it is just a whimsical look at a street Paul McCartney remembered. But it is so much more than that.
    However, in this 3 part video series, David Bedford will reveal how the song, Penny Lane, has a very strong and personal connection to not only Paul McCartney, but John Lennon and George Harrison too. The film series will also reveal how Paul McCartney did not write the song alone - John Lennon made a significant contribution to the song.
    Also revealed is how each of the characters in Penny Lane was real, revealing who the Pretty Nurse of Penny Lane was.

    Awesome vid. I'm 69 and my sister and I grew up with The Beatles. How 4 boys from a small English town changed the entire world forever, still amazes me and always will. We'll never see anything like them again. Ever. Greetings from southern Pennsylvania.

    This is a beautiful piece of work. Lovely, thoughtful visuals, down to earth local knowledge, excellent original research, evocative archive photographs, sensible and fascinating analysis. All put together in a fabulous synthesis. The insight into the lyrics and importance of this track is excellent, showing again two geniuses competing and collaborating in an almost mystical way. Paul's "in my ears and in my eyes" is so good, and Lennon just flashes magic with "though she feels as if she's in a play, she is anyway". Top quality content from Brightmoon!

    Your books, videos and historical narration helps those of us who live oceans away and have never visited Liverpool enjoy and have a deeper understanding of Beatle history. Even by traveling there and taking in the packaged tourist trips and traps I doubt they focus on the details with the depth you do. Additionally, your raw street level walkabout videos interposed with historical photos and stories have made this sexagenarian Beatlemaniac feel he could visit as a returning friend instead of a novice tourist and not get lost. Thank you!

    Thank you for putting this together for us.
    Did a great job of getting all things mentioned in the song included and how they fit in.
    Left out the "Finger Pies", I can understand you not wanting to include it, but it was part of the story also.
    As a young teenager in the sixties I just thought it meant small fruit pies you would just eat with your hands.
    Something your mother might pack with your lunch for that day as your desert.

    9:30 Great detective work! I always feel "And though she feels as if she's in a play/ She is anyway" was a Lennon line somehow - - a bit of a downbeat twist. Whoever takes responsibility for it, I think it's the best line The Beatles ever did.

    Nice post, but it was written by Paul McCartney not with John. I’m sure John had a little input. But this is one of the songs that he wrote separately. Paul wrote this when he was 16 years. Also, before someone corrects me, please google and advance. Thank you for the beautiful trip down Penny Lane.

    • @BrightmoonLiverpool
      @BrightmoonLiverpool  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you. However, John wrote the last verse. The whole story of the pretty nurse was John's story, and that is all about hom and Pete Shotton. Paul also said that John came over and helped him with the last verse. That is how they worked. One would write 80% of the song, and the other finish it off. By the end, they were writing almost completely separately, but Penny Lane was one they shared, because it was a place that meant a lot to both of them.

    Thank you for these very interesting videos. Also in the original lyrics to In My Life, it mentions getting the number 5 bus into town and refers to going past 'The Dutch and St Columba's'. The Dutch presumably refers to 'The Dutch Cafe' which was not very far along from 'Penny Lane' on Smithdown Road. Am I right in thinking this was a late night haunt of The Beatles? According to John's old Dovedale and Quarry Bank school friend, Michael Hill, Pete Shotton once managed the place. The building is a bathroom showroom now. However, I am intrigued by a windmill symbol that is still on the building with the word 'Cafe' on it. Is this an original sign? It looks too modern in design to me to be original. Even if it isn't the original, it's interesting that it's been placed there presumably in memory of The Dutch Cafe.
    Also of interest, just before you get to there from Penny Lane is Holyoake Hall. I believe this was a venue which the early Beatles played at. You can still see the Holyoake Hall sign on the building. The building currently houses The Crafty Swine pub and one or two other places. Look up towards the top of the building and you will see the Holyoake Hall sign.
    St Colomba's was a Prestyterian Church further along Smithdown Road, near the junction with Ullet Road. It's now been converted into residential property but the red brick church tower still stands.

    • @BrightmoonLiverpool
      @BrightmoonLiverpool  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Robert. I will be doing a video on those original In My Life lyrics, which I wrote about in my book, Liddypool. I know the area well and all of those locations you mentioned.
      Pete Shotton worked at the Dutch Café, though we now know he didn't own it. The Windmill is a repainted version of the original that was in the same place, signifying the Dutch windmills, the Dutch Café.
      It is a fascinating look at the original thoughts of John before he rewrote the song.
      Glad you are enjoying the videos and thank you for your input here too. David
