Well there are many songs I like. But I'd rather you did a video on the song you like best. Or the one your wife likes best. Or the one you and your wife likes best. And, no offense to you, but being the hetero sexual that I am, I'd rather your wife play a more predominate role in the video than you. ;)
On a side note, I'd really appreciate it if at some point in the video there is some hat wearing on someones part. lol

Penny Lane is, in terms of its structure, a perfect pop song. Although it features clearly defined verses and choruses, the whole song is as melodically strong as its chorus. No dead spots, and uplifting all the way through.

My favourite song was When I'm 64. At an engagement party, with 2 friends, I had to have fun. One saw it coming, other didn't! I turned to the other lady and began singing. As soon as I sang "when I'm losing my hair", she replied, "that's not all we're losing". All 3 of us laughed. I was 63!

  • @mgconlan

"Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane" were originally intended for a concept album the Beatles wanted to do based on locations in Liverpool they had frequented as children. Instead they released those two songs as a single and reshaped the concept for the upcoming album to create "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band." I also loved a "60 Minutes" episode in which James Corden walked with Paul McCartney through the streets of Liverpool. Of course they walked on Penny Lane, and Paul noticed the people who had signed the Penny Lane street sign. Paul signed his own name to the sign, then turned to Corden and said, "No one will believe that's really me."

The only reason the single failed to get to #1 was because of the somewhat suspect accounting by the UK charts. They counted the double A sides separately, this means that even though the one single sold 2,000,000 copies, those sales were split, where Englebert's single sold far fewer copies but he got the credit for all the sales.

That naughty phrase “finger pie” was not unknown to American youth either. I don’t know if it made it into youth slang due to this song, or had drifted across the pond on it’s own. But you can see in the video, Paul can barely keep from laughing as the camera pans to him on the phrase. A fine moment when the adults have no idea that a hugely popular song is so filthy. I am sure Paul considers it a great triumph.

To me, Penny Lane is the quintessential mid-to-late-60's flower-power song. Toward the end of the song where it changes octaves and Paul sings, "Penny Laaaane is in my ears and in my eyes", I am transported back to 1967. 'Just one reason why I love the Beatles.

It's not even close. "Strawberry Fields" is another good Lennon song, totally Lennon in character: heavy, weird, cryptic lyrics, smothered in weird Lennon production. "Penny Lane," on the other hand, is perhaps the most melodic and enjoyably sing-along song ever from that incredible era. I mean, come on... who doesn't like "Penny Lane"?
(Side note: I believe Paul wrote the haunting meletron intro to "Strawberry Fields.")

It’s not that hard for Americans to figure out either..... of the many kind of raunchy things we call vaginas and pussies in America is pie, as in giving her a cream pie would mean fucking her and cumming inside. Could also mean her own cream as she gets turned on. Finger pie? Of course that’s fingering a girl. And the fish part may be more derogatory in America than the UK..... if a girl doesn’t use feminine hygiene products enough, well, you get the picture.
It may be exactly the same in Britain and America after thinking about it.

An interesting debate can be had in a pub over an evening discussing: a) What should have been on the alternative single, b) What tracks should have been replaced to include those two and finally c) What would have been the running order on the album with those two included? The Main Rule: no album tracks on singles and vice versa as the fans shouldn't pay for a song twice......

@@littlewing6231 In truth, I think the problem was that they had already recorded PL and SFF and maybe When I'm 64, and Brian was determined to have a Christmas/New Year single out for some reason. I guess that it would have been more prudent to have waited until they had more recorded before issuing a single. After all a "Lovely Rita/When I'm 64" single would have got to No. 1 (Like Yellow Submarine) because they were THE BEATLES. The original concept of Sgt Peppers was childhood memories or something like that......

@@SuperNevile I have to remind myself of the times. Back then some groups would release 3 albums in a year. The smarter ones like the Beatles to my chagrin in terms of the number of lost albums the singles never went on were like you said Epstein saying to George Martin “ it’s been 4 months give me something. Today groups go years between projects even before Napster started the death of CDs/ album sales. To think of the pressures the boys were under in that 7 year window and the volume of music they put out having to navigate the insanity of Beatlemania it’s any wonder they stayed together that long.
