Iron Man 3 - Caravan Of Garbage

- Iron Man 3 in 2013 landed red hot off the back of the The Avengers. Promising to delve into Tony Stark's PTST resulting from the Invasion Of New York along with the revelation about the villain that was supposedly behind it all, The Mandarin. I mean it does do these things but not with some twists and turns along the way in addition to some very odd choices. Despite some minor controversy it does a lot of things right which we get right into in this final film in the Iron Man trilogy, this is our Caravan Of Garbage review.

Oh, what you’re reviewing next week? IDK Thor, I’m watching it anyway.

Reseting the numbering on the podcast again
This movie always reminds me that Tony stark retired 3 times in the MCU. At the end of Iron Man 3, at the end of Age of Ultron, and then between Infinity war and Endgame.
They say people that retire die sooner than people who continue working, but in this case Tony died coming out of retirement due to work because his work involved a robot glove with space magic rocks making half his face grilled.
This movie would fit better at the end of phase 2 so he has to come out of retirement to stop Steve Rogers in civil war
@@loganwithlightsabers3051 I think that’s what they were kinda going for bc he retires again after Age of Ultron and still kinda has to do that. It’s just his second retirement in 2 years so it loses a bit of its meaning. I would’ve liked it a lot if they went w the original plans of the post credit scene and going into guardians 2 w Tony using the space suit to meet up w them and he doesn’t retire until age of Ultron
And then in death
@@Etticos. the first part of your comment holds a lot of merit.I've literally seen retiree's on jobsites hold there own or even work better then 20 year olds.one in particular was pretty high up in a local factory, then retired before working with us. i'd be incredibly grateful working with old man ron again.
Can’t wait for Shang chi to reveal that the mandarin was actually Happy Hogan the whole time
It’s Happy’s secret evil twin brother, Sad Hogan
@@videogamenostalgia and now thanks to the multiverse they can meet their radioactive variant Hulk Hogan
Nah, instead they're gonna have a really faithful adaptation of the Mandarin that's genuinely intimidating and memorable...
Then they're gonna reveal that that's also the fake Mandarian and the real Mandarian was the Christmas Story kid the whole time.
@@videogamenostalgia His name would literally be Fake Happy
Abomination was The Mandarin the whole time!
I just wish they'd let Aldrich Killian be more cool. He's so cool at the beginning. So so creepy and weird - AND THEN HE JUST BECOMES A FLASH VILLAIN LOL
At the beginning of the movie he was literally Jim Carey's Riddler.
Remember that time your tv said working for a bit? IT WAS ME TONY!
I wish they would have made him less of a Jim Carrey-esque caricature, as Bret mentioned, and less of a stereotypical cocky rich guy in the end. If he started out as more realistically awkward and ended as something closer to Elon Musk where he's confident and trying his best to hide who he used to be but some of that awkwardness still comes through the facade, I think that would have been pretty great. And definitely ditch the claim that he was always the Mandarin, of course. Movie fixed!
@@bretsheeley4034 who later became Jamie Fox’s Electro, but this is before before Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah.
the movie is crap, that's not exactly a divisive opinion,i actually left the theater disappointed, if they were going to screw around with the extremis storyline the way they did , they should of brought back justin hammer and put him in a jacked up patriot armor for iron man and war machine to fight at the end instead of Aldrich killian.
im also tired of filmmakers taking on these projects and being too pussy footed even 10 years ago to adapt characters knowing full well what they were getting into.
The weirdest bit was in one of those Chinese scenes where Tony looks directly at the camera and says “Wow I guess it is true that Hong Kong and Taiwan are part of and subject to the laws of the People’s Republic of China, all hail President Xi the magnificent!” and then just carries on like nothing happened.
My version of the movie just replaced every line with RDJ saying "Chinese Taipei". Kinda detracts from the watching experience but idk, I'm not a moviemaker
I haven't seen this movie in such a long time that I legit thought this actually happened for a second lmao 🤣
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
It's sad that everything has to pander to China for money. They have a no gays and no ghosts policy. Can't show them in your movies. I think they're also weird about time travel.
At least they're not as bad as Russia (or they might be, idk). In Russia you're not allowed to tell children gay people exist. Litteral criminal offence.
@@jamesramplin8124 yeah, time travel, demons and poc being prominent too, remember that Disney took out Finn from the posters of the (hopefully not canon) sequel trilogy in China.
I think if Ben Kingsleys twist was literally it, and after that the mandarin was left as a “if this guy isn’t the mandarin who is?” Type thing it would have worked 1000X better
Feel the same way.
I mean to be fair I always took Guy Pearce screaming at the as like just delusional because he just exploded and he’s clearly not with it
Why would someone invent a fictional Mandarin if they were just the Mandarin?
@@SeanS102 well it’s the classic prank isn’t it?
@@SeanS102 his whole shtick was being the puppetmaster from behind the scenes, but he still needed a face and a voice to stay out of the spotlight.
Tony's PTSD leading to him overstocking on Iron Man suits and being hyper defensive to where he almost hurts Pepper in his sleep makes sense. Him only having the least capable Iron Man suit he's ever made on hand right after issuing a request for a duel at his house makes the opposite of sense. Also, the lack of SHIELD in this one makes it seem like the authorities just sort of shrugged when their local superhero REQUESTED a terrorist attack on his own property and had no response ready when it did happen.
Not here trying to be argumentative, but wasn’t SHIELD out of the picture because of what happened in CA: Winter Soldier?
@@broomhilder No, because Cap 2 takes place after Iron Man 3. It was released after and no timeline I've seen has ever placed it earlier.
My favorite part of the movie was when they revealed that the Mandarin was really Corn of Coblin
Same
You sir win for that reference
Oh mate! When Shane Black did that, it really subverted my expectations!
He wouldn't have been able to breathe fire though, he'd become popcorn on the coblin
It's always Corn Of Coblin!
This and Thor: The Dark World felt like films with darker themes that then went through a rewrite to make them more "fun". The PTSD angle for instance.
3:11 oh god, he left Cillian Murphy on the roof right next to Aldrich Killian? That's a dastardly team up!
Yeah I noticed that aswell haha , only one has creepy eyes though
I've never caught that
Well he kinda did in Oppenheimer. James can see the future!
When James said Yinsen’s corpse should’ve been one of the people in the iron man suits I could not stop laughing.
With this clearly being a christmas movie I think it would make perfect sense if Yinsen was the ghost of suits past.
The real Mandarin was Ike Perlmutter
I can just see him screaming that at Kevin feige on his way out the door
The real Mandarin was the pearls Ike Perlmutter muttered along the way
Ohhh noooOoOoOoo, that means Ike Perlmutter is Shang-Chi’s dad.
The real Mandarin is Iron Man's arch nemesis, who was behind the kidnapping of Tony Stark and Yinsen in South Asia, and who had the chance to kill Stark after he escaped the Wong-Chu's camp in his first armor variant, but declined, thinking of him as an insignificant man whose path will never cross his again. Too bad nobody at the MCU reads comics.
@@antona.8659 so.... how do you feel about guardians of the galaxy? How do you feel about the fact that Bucky wasn’t a child? I don’t think the comics should be the deciding factor in if the MCU is good. I love the comics but if the MCU just copy the comics then why not just read the comics? The comics are good enough. We don’t need two different marvel universes that are exactly the same.
I love the final fight with all the suits because it's a perfect example of advancing story through action: After spending all movie freaking out about having a suit for every possible emergency/wondering who he is without them, he goes from suit to suit, throwing them away as they break down and moving on to the next one
Last time I was this early Cillian Murphy was still the Mandarin
Last time I was this early Cillian Murphy was still Batman
So.. When is Ben's video on IM3 coming out? I could feel his blood boiling behind the edits.
Haha, yes I loved salty Ben’s passive aggressive comments. We should have that every time James had a Bad Opinion (pretty much every video tbh…)
my favorite part was when they revealed that the mandarin was john krasinski
Wrong film;)
ProZD in a Mr Sunday Movies video; the most ambitious crossover since Endgame.
I never noticed how his beard connects to his sideburns in this movie before. Damn you guys.
Yeah, it’s bad
It looks horrible
The skydive scene is so great because it’s so rare to get a scene like that anymore. A scene of a superhero not just saving the day by fighting the bad guys, but literally going out of their way to save a few specific people. A super hero, saving people in a super hero movie, crazy right? Super hero movies have gotten less and less of those scenes over the years, because I guess it’s not as entertaining as watching the hero beat up random henchmen.
That’s a big reason I like Spider Man movies from any era, they never really lost sight of that aspect so you have multiple scenes of Spider Man saving civilians in every movie.
Ikr? Even the likes of Captain America only actually save innocent people in a coupe of their movies as they spend most rest of the time killing and punching people. That plane scene is extra satisfying if you watch The Boys before it.
I remember thinking this felt like the final film with Iron Man when I first saw it, and with you mentioning the behind the scenes details that makes sense why. Had that not been the case I feel like they maybe should have had the reveal of the Ultron program be an end credit scene in this film.
Based on how this film ends I feel like Age of Ultron would have been a lot more interesting if he didn't return as Iron Man until the third act, he's still helping the Avengers but he's more of just the tech guy, which I get isn't exactly within his character but maybe if they elaborated on the fact that he destroyed all his suits for Pepper at the end of this film, then it would make more sense that he was making a conscious effort to change for the better, only to then accidently create a bigger problem with Ultron. That would have made the Ultron program more believable for why he did it other than just his trauma from the first Avengers, and added more meaning to the end of this film, so when they reveal that Pepper left him at the beginning of Civil War it's because he went back to being Iron Man at the end of Age of Ultron. I just like the concept of Tony trying to be a better person only to get punished for it, that I think would have been an interesting arc for him in Age of Ultron since I feel that he should have shown more regret at the end of that film for creating Ultron.
What I like about Civil War is that while Tony does continue to screw up, ironically it’s Cap the paragon who makes the biggest fuck up, that ultimately splits the Avengers for real and the ramifications are still felt afterwards.
Tony isn’t a saint and has many character defects but that doesn’t mean everyone else is less flawed than him. Thor despite “being worthy”’ becomes a drunken loser and Hawkeye a murdering psycho. If anything Pepper was wrong to expect Tony to just give up being Iron Man, when he’s in the suit saving people he can do mote for the world than half the Avengers combined.
Those chinese exclusive scenes are the most Disney things I've ever heard lmao

The easily breakable suit protect Tony from being a Mary Sue.
Someone comes to Tony's house to fight and he throws a fucking piano at him. Its awesome.

I wasn't even a fan of the comic books, and even I was let down with The Mandarin. Ben Kingsley is such a good actor to waste, and the trailers gave a great feeling of dread from this very human, but very deadly, adversary.
Some evil terrorist with little to know relation to tony stark < a guy from tony past that he wronged continuing the theme of reoccurring demons in Tony’s narrative. I much prefer the villain we got over the generic baddie we could have. Mandarin is a lame character in general.
Ben Kingsley did such a good job as a terrifying villain, that it was a slap in the face to dumb him down that way.
@@derianparker5829 at least it would have been different from literally every other iron man villain including the new Spider-Man villains too. They just keep doing the same thing.
@@derianparker5829 The hero shouldn't have to know every villain personally? There is such a thing as contrasting characters who AREN'T just a dark mirror of each other? Has the superhero genre somehow lost this idea?
I didn't read the comics either, but I did look into who The Mandarin from the comics was before watching the movie. He would have been way too strong for Tony to beat, so excluding him is fine. But the implication from this movie was that Killian was the true Mandarin, which was lame.
21:18 Well… that aged brilliantly.
The best way I can describe the "I'm the Mandarin" twist would be like if when Nolan teased the Joker at the end of Batman Begins, but then did DKR and instead of Goul, Bane was hinted to work for someone else.
Then DK opens up with Heath Ledger Joker and it the same just pass the nurse scene only to reveal he really was just mental patient...
Then Jim Carry comes out in green spandex saying "What is a Joke, but a Riddle with a punchline?!"
Riddler saying that actually seems like something he might say - nice wordplay! Though I see what you're getting at.
Killian announcing he's The Mandarin is just him taking credit for it all, no? Like you can take it literally if you like but he's just saying, "I created this fictional terrorist...but I suppose in a way I AM THE MANDARIN....because actually it was me...behind it all"
As far as the standalone movies go this one is one of my favorites. Some really inventive scenes and at the time I really felt there were really stakes at play.

Jarvis was shut down for most of the movie, while he’s running about in the snow. That’s why he couldn’t call the other suits
Jarvis wasn’t out of power when Tony was just chilling at his house after threatening the Mandarin
"He has that PTSD that he has to like, get over in like 2 hours" lol
I’m not a fan of the Ben Kingsley twist but he plays both characters really well
Problem is, he played the Mandarin so well that the reveal too away the genuine menace he had before.
I remember Iron Man 3 being filmed in Wilmington, NC. I live close to the loading dock that was used in the finale of the movie and the hospital where Tony Stark was visiting Happy.
Drinking very heavily. That’s is what people are doing at the EPCOT center.
9:54 - the reason he didn't call his suits to him earlier is because they were being dug out of the rubble covering the hall of armor entrance in his Malibu home. Jarvis alerts him during the 3rd act that they are able to deploy, and he then activates the House Party Protocol. BTW this actually might be my favorite IM movie - we did an awesom cosplay of this at Disneyland a few years back where my wife was bra and yoga pants glowing Pepper Potts with one IM glove, and I went as 'The Mechanic'. I've done many more difficult cosplays at DLand for Halloweentime (back when it was still in the main park - pre-COVID) but I think this costume set got the most love from the DLand staff. Much love!
7:00 I enjoy the fact that actor Scoot McNairy gets a shout-out.
I'll admit tho, the scene where Tony talks to Jarvis and they say the house party protocol and the scene when you actually see what that is, are 1 of my favorite moments in the whole of the MCU.
it's probably not all that iconic to most people, but by the Norse gods themselves, I do love it.
There’s a moment in which Jarvis basically tells Tony in code that something something is ready. So the “house party protocol” wasn’t operational until that moment. It’s just very hard to get, a few seconds of an AI with speech impediment saying random words. So I guess it’s more of a poor execution rather than a plot hole.
Once i heard the song "I'm Blue (Dab-Da-Dee)" by Eiffel 65 at the start, that made me almost laugh out loud in the cinema, also the way Guy Pearce has his hair styled and wears tons of white suits... I thought he was Ron Moss a.k.a. Ridge from Bold & The Beautiful.
Every time I watch “Iron Man 3,” I like it more and more. I love the Mandarin twist as well.
It's how I feel about the Matrix Reloaded
I agree with Ben, this is indeed the best Iron Man movie

The plane scene is easily one of my top fav MCU moments, especially because it shows how much Iron Man actually cares about saving lives, he does more times than the rest of the Avengers.
I loved the Kingsly reveal. I wish they had put the “actually there is a real Mandarin out there” reveal in the post-credits. But I really think this movie would hold up better if they hadn’t just kind of ignored it as the MCU moved forward. Here is a controversial statement: Iron Man 3 is the best one. I love that it’s over the top action (with and without the suit) mixed with good comedy and decent twists.
Lol Ben was like a 3rd member of the podcast with his editing comments 😂
I actually genuinely like Iron Man 3. It's a classic Shane Black film, action and big explosions and shit you can enjoy with your brain turned off, but also a surprisingly soft and almost deep side, dealing with Tony and his traumas. I liked that they actually didn't magically solve them at the end of the movie, Tony just learns to live with them and make the best of his life.
The after credits scene should of had the "fake" Mandarin sitting in jail when someone slips a small box into his cell containing the ten rings. He puts them on, they start glowing and he looks at the camera and says "when you least expect it"
He can’t do the House Party Protocol after the attack on his house because JARVIS is offline.
And the cranes havent cleared the debris yet
JARVIS wasn't offline. The new suit just wasn't charged yet. It's literally him turning on the Protocol by saying "do it".
Hell in the first Avengers, he said "deploy" to activate his new suit and had the bracelets on, and Jarvis just heard him through the walls or intercom or whatever.
Terrible movie, but not because it lacks logic. The first Iron Man doesn't have much logic, either, but it's great because of its mature tone and clean storyline, even if it doesn't survive scrutiny. IM3 is just ugly and bad. Hate it.
