    I just bought a used 2020 Jeep Trailhawk with 51k miles at Huntley Ford (in my hometown). They tried selling it with: 1. "Dealer prep & delivery ($1,900). 2. Vin etching $500. 3. Three year/36000 mile Ford basic warranty $2,995. So, $5400 in worthless fees. The thing is, the Chrysler basic warranty was still in force :o and I couldn't get an explanation of what dealer prep/delivery actually was. I stuck to my guns & demanded those get removed. 3 hours later, I drove away with the Jeep at $517 a month instead of $800 a month. Having watched your channel for years, I knew it was a scam and told them so. As the car had been on their lot for 144 days I got the Jeep for $22,000 plus tax/title/license with $2500 down.

      You did great. Government tax, title, and license are all you have to pay. The FTC has guidelines that all dealers have to abide by. Some didn't and have paid hefty fines. One large dealer paid like 10.4 million for not abiding by the rules. Enjoy your new ride

    I just helped my inlaws secure their dream 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee from a import dealership by using tips and tricks I’ve seen right here on your TH-cam page. The dealer tried to sell me a “non-negotiatable” $3000 car care package that included things like VIN etching, ceramic coating, nitrogen filled tires, and about 8 other bull crap sales pitches. I was able to call their bluff and save my family over 3 grand by educating myself on what the vehicle they were hunting was worth and since it was a cash deal, the dealer didn’t make any money on the backside. Thank you for sharing your insights.

    I have dealt with several dealers over the years and always bought new vehicles. When I hit the sales manager, all we talked about is price difference, tax, title, and license. They have asked a couple of times, and I reminded them I could walk. Never walked yet. You are right. The add-ons are just another way to add to dealer profit.

    I worked for a Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealer for years.The big scam they do is every new car gets wheel locks and nitrogen filled tires and most get a tape stripe all at inflated prices.They say you have to pay for it because the car already has these installed.They also charge a large doc fee and even charge an extra $25 for license plates because they don't have temp plates there,they give you a plate right away.

    • @g0989
      @g0989 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most new car dealers in my area apply that kind of stuff to new vehicles upon delivery to the dealer, prior to the sale. Pure nitrogen, window tinting, VIN etching, paint sealant, 3M stone protection film, etc., are among the most common items.

    • @ficklefingeroffate
      @ficklefingeroffate ปีที่แล้ว

      @@g0989 That's nice, it's also easy to say "no". I bought a 2023 Kia Soul last month, prior to going into the store I talked through the deal over the phone and made it clear if ANY dealer add ons were already on the car and considered "required" fees I WOULD NOT consider buying anything from them. Funny, they pretty quickly dropped the dealer add on fees and, when I asked them to put it in writing they did. When I went into the store for the test drive and the purchase the sales rep, sales manager, general manager and F&I guy all individually confirmed "we know about your deal, you will not be charged any addon fees". The sales manager and gm each sought us out during the sales process. In the end, they did exactly what they said they would.

    • @g0989
      @g0989 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ficklefingeroffate Good to hear you stood up to them. Those add-ons always carry a hefty mark-up on the addendum window sticker, and some of them (nitrogen, for example), are almost pure profit. Some can't be removed without risking damage to the vehicle, so once they're on, they're on for good. Shopping another dealer will likely just get you more of the same kind of add-ons. Special ordering a factory-build with no dealer adds is another way to avoid that kind of stuff.

    • @ficklefingeroffate
      @ficklefingeroffate ปีที่แล้ว

      @@g0989 It was about 7 years ago when I ordered a car because none of the dealers in the area had them equipped like I wanted. At the time of the order I got in writing a locked in prices and specific language excluding deal add ons and any additional equipment not specifically designated on the order. I paid them my REFUNDABLE deposit and started th waiting game. Fast forward roughly 4 months, the car was at the store ready for pick up ....aaaaaand the fun began. The car was as ordered....with dealer added tint, VIN window etching, paint protection, undercoating, fabric protection....the usual crap and a $4000 upcharge AND a new price! No conversation here, ultimatum time - remove everything you just added to the car or you are returning my REFUNDABLE deposit and I am walking. They refused and tried to refuse a refund. When they tried to refuse the refund I began talking about theft and calling the police. Suddenly I had the fedun in cash and them trying to "discount" the addons. Sorry no deal. On the way out the door the GM was crying about "what am I going to do with this car, I can't see it with your options". Not my problem, I was gone. No joke, 9 months later that very car was still on their lot...unsold. The problem? I put a manual in a car that 99% of the time sold as an automatic and it was a special premium color BUT also had steelies wheels cause I was planning to buy my own customer wheels. Play stupid games, win stupid prises.

    When I was young and naive (23 year old - first new car) I bought 'rust protection' and tint from a dealer.
    I felt really stupid when I realized that you could get the same thing for about 1/3 the price elsewhere.
    I have bought 3 cars from dealers since then and I just zone out and start staring at the walls when the finance guy starts his sales pitches. Just to make sure he knows that he's wasting his time.
    If I ever buy a car from a dealer again (unlikely - I've become a shade-tree mechanic over the last 15 yrs and I'm happy to buy from a private seller now, once I inspect the vehicle), I would make the salesperson think that I am really interested in these add-ons so that the dealership will give me a better price on the car.
    "I want to ask - do you guys have paint protection or rust protection or extended warranty here? I want to make sure I get those and really protect my car. I plan to keep it for a long time and I want to make sure it's protected in EVERY way."
    and then when I get to the finance guy (i.e. the price of the vehicle has been agreed upon), just say I changed my mind.
    That way I'll be using the high markup of those products (by dangling those profits in front of them) against them!

    I have never purchased any type of loan insurance, not even gap. The rule that I have always applied, and taught my children to apply when it comes to automobile purchases is fairly simple. It might mean you have to postpone a purchase but, in my humble opinion, you should not be putting yourself or, should you die an untimely death, your loved ones in a position where the value of the vehicle is less than what you owe on it. The most effective tool to accomplish this is your down payment.

      Dealerships source their insurance products from legitimate insurance providers, available to the general public, which they repackage as a simplified policy. The cost of this policy, along with interest on your auto loan, likely exceeds $3,000 to $4,000. By exploring alternative insurance options in the open market, one can secure comprehensive coverage at a comparable price point, covering up to 80% of income, in addition to covering the costs of the vehicle.

    Finance manager asks about the following:
    Key Replacement: Never lost a key and I get two keys with my new car.
    Paint Protection: It's a car, not an investment.
    Credit life insurance: I'll be dead. I don't care.
    Gap insurance: I gave you 15k down on a 40k car.
    Bi-Weekly car payments: laughs in 800 credit score.
    Nitrogen: Let it out and put air in, I'm not paying for that.
    Extended warranties: I drive 14 miles a day round trip and this is a Toyota Tacoma on its last year of a body/engine style.

    I’m assuming a biweekly payment program is the same regardless if it for a car or a home. I know I had a mortgage on my house that would take the biweekly payment, but apply only the amount due on the loan, and the extra payments would sit in the account collecting interest in the bank until the next payment was due. Specifically, it needed to be a principal payment to make it work for you.

    Biweekly payments have been a thing with home mortgages for years. You can do it on your own. People are lazy and dumb. The dealer will take advantage of that. All these products to “protect your investment” mean nothing if you don’t keep the vehicle for 8-10 years or longer. I wish I realized these things years ago. Now I keep my cars much longer and avoid buying new, so it’s less of an issue. Still there are dealers who conduct business like it’s decades ago, pressure and ripoffs.

    What if they have added a PPF coating? Is it worth keeping or make them remove it? I did notice a few flaws in the application and if I keep it, should I make them reapply it to my satisfaction?

    • @MikesCarStore
      @MikesCarStore  ปีที่แล้ว

      The applied coating may not exhibit durable longevity, as it is susceptible to being easily polished off by proficient detailing shops. It is reasonable to expect that automobiles may possess imperfections, as perfection is not attainable in reality. In the case of purchasing a pre-owned vehicle, negotiating power may be limited, as this is one of the primary reasons why used vehicles are comparatively less expensive than new ones. For optimal results, engaging the services of a reputable detailing establishment to execute a paint correction and implement a professional ceramic coating is recommended.

      Totally agree with this. For 14 years we bought BMW and Mercedes but recently moved to a smaller town so wanted a more local dealership for servicing so tried to buy an Escalade at GM. What a nightmare. Completely different experience than what we were used to. It was two hours of Jedi mind tricks and mental gymnastics that I thought to myself no wonder people cave and pay more just to get our of the experience.

    I would have to take issue with your statement that vehicles never appreciate in value. 10 years ago I would have totally agreed but almost 8 years ago I purchased my very first and, as it turns out, probably my last EV (not because I'm unhappy with it, I'm just getting old enough that I will probably just drive it until I can't drive any more). Anyway, when I purchase the car in early 2016 I paid $6995 and it had 21k miles on it. I'm kinda anal about keeping track of my cars value so I check up on it several times a year. Year after year I watched in amazement as the blue book value kept increasing. It peaked out at a little over $8k and then a couple of years ago it finally began to devalue. According to kbb, it's currently valued at $6985. I've owned many vehicles in my lifetime but this is the only one that ever went up in value after I bought it. So, I personally cannot make the claim that automobiles always go down in value after you buy them.

      Companies have policy’s in order to buy the products. For instance my detail company uses SB3. You can’t buy that from them as a consumer. You have to have a company and certified with them to be an installed. 😀

      @@MikesCarStore Ok. But that's as much of a scam as any other car dealer.....and you know it. Just because a company won't sell to anyone who hasn't done their "training" course doesn't make the product better. You can buy equivalent products on Amazon or Ebay for a fraction of the cost. Paint Correction is also a scam. A name made up a few years ago to make polishing a car sound more exotic. HA! Don't claim you aren't the other guys when you actually are!
