I just realized that Chevy Dude is actually a Ford Dude.... Look at the color of his shirt, color of wall in background and color of his truck....it very nicely matches the wonderful Blue Oval color. Also basically just like the great color of Ford, Ford Performance blue... So Mike, from one die hard Ford guy to another nice to see you're actually a Ford Dude!
I actually enjoy the car buying process and have actually closed a number of deals for my friends. One of my favorite areas to save money is the "doc fee". I've seen doc fees as high as $795. No way would I pay that nor should anyone else. Never take it personally, it's business deal. I've done more than a few 30-45 deals.
I did the same two years ago when I bought my 2002 Lexus ES300. Small wholesaler dealer, he had a $500 doc fee which I told him in a nice way I’m not paying
I just hung up on a salesman when i asked about the doc fee, it was $999. California got one thing right in their stae when they passed a law limiting doc fee to $85
There is nothing in these videos that is not extremely common sense and well known general knowledge of the car industry. Dealers who are knowledgeable would actually tell you this guy is pretty clueless
@@Jaymie4Justice I own a car dealership in the same general area. This guy is viewed as a joke among his peers. His lot isn't successful and he has been sued by customers for harassing them if they leave a bad review. The info he is providing is no valuable at all. It's common knowledge or wholly inaccurate.
I've been watching you and learned a lot that came in helpfully yesterday when I purchased slightly used Honda HRV and stayed strong on my offer right to the end, and finally they gave it to me for what I offered.
Another fantastic video. I hate spending what feels like all day in the dealership. I am looking forward to my next transaction in the next couple of years!
Im asking because I now need 2 vehicles and have 1 trade, I have a specific budget and no time to waste in a dealership and have become quite used to this time saving process. Ive actually used many of the techniques you discuss only from my own office.
As far as negotiating at home, where do I start? What do I ask them to send me (via email) so I can say, “No take this off or that off” (like the pain protection or replacement key) or is that just seen in the finance office?? Can I ask what’s the MSRP and negotiate from that? I’ve watched a handful of your other videos and I’m still unclear about that? Is there a term for what to ask them to send me so I can do the negotiation at home before going in to finalized the deal??
EXACTLY!! THE PRICE ONLINE SET BY DEALERSHIP IS NEGOTIABLE BUT HOW DO WE WORK THE PRICE DOWN AND DOING IT ONLINE ? AND LET'S SAY WE PUT THE DEAL TOGETHER ONLINE AND WANT TO BUY IT , AT WHAT POINT DO WE ACTUALLY GO TO THE LOT AND CHECK OUT THE CAR LET ALONE HAVE A INDEPENDENT MECHANIC INSPECT THE VEHICLE?
Thanks for the vids. I bought a Honda pilot and I love it. You wouldn’t be caught dead in a Honda? Come on, the pilot is a great reliable vehicle. so is the ridgeline and you know it. 😂
You still have to drive whatever car you may be thinking about buying. So you still have more than 30 mins time. You may not like the car you see online or how it drives, so on and so forth. You get my understanding.
Imma have to disagree on the “not depending on a Honda” part lol very informative video though. I’ve been learning more and more about the car market so I appreciate the vid’s you put out. Thanks man!
Nowadays (2024) is seems like dealerships are not negotiating any deals. Most have these weird "super" discounts off of the MSRP which will equate to thousands of dollars off and claim "they have rock bottom prices." If you try to negotiate (from your home), they usually say, "oh well, can't budge anymore" and you just leave. All Toyota dealers I've talked to do this. I guess they assume they will sell the car you want eventually to someone for "their" price. Is there any negotiating for new cars anymore?
Thanks Mike for that great advice! I do have a question, I have a leased vehicle that we will be returning in 4 months .the fair market value for the car is higher than the residual. does that mean that the difference can be negotiated off the price of my new vehicle? can you please explain to me how that works when I do not own the car? Thanks for all your help and advice!
Thanks for the video, Mike. I have a question about delivery: I bought a car in 2019 and the new car smell was really strong (never experienced that in other new cars I purchased before). When I inquired the dealership in my first car maintenance, they told me they added a "new car smell". Long story short, wife wouldn't use the car. When I place an order, can I state somewhere in writing that if the car has a strong odor, I can walk away from the deal?
Thank you, looking to purchase a new car. So this was extremely helpful. I have one question, if there is more than one incentive, and I qualify for say 2 or even three, can I use both, like one being $500 with 0% financing cash back, one being $3,500 trade in assistance.
I have a feeling I made a wrong lease deal. I leased my 2022 Hyundai Kona. After learning now I should have done better homework. To lower my payments I put down 2k. Yeah I know that was wrong now. I also opted with 36month with 45k miles. I agreed with $309 month payment. Did I go wrong on the down payment and even the more miles? Thanks
so how you do get the dealership to work on the price of the new car before working out the trade? the salesman doesn't seem to enthusiastic about doing that....as in doing it in 3 transactions. --- and the car is a "special order" and it has taken months to get in.
What's a reasonable expectation of discount we can get off MSRP? I'm looking at a 2023 Toyota Tundra and they're at $67k with all their add ons before TTL. He's trying to get the price down to $60,000 reasonable?
Step one: Research. If you do proper research you will figure out if a vehicle is in high demand or not. An average wait time for a Tundra now is around 3 months. Not terrible but it means that dealers do not have those on the lot. And the demand is there. Which means that most likely you will not be able to get a discount on a car like this. Then you go to the next step- the budget. If you have only 60k to spend and are hoping to get 7k off for a truck that have a wait time a few months you are looking and the wrong truck. You should be looking for something that is in the mid 50’s range so when you add taxes, doc fee, interest etc to end up at 60k.
Hi @Mike, I've been watching you for a while and i need a specific question answered please. Does the advice youre giving about vehicle pricing at the dealerships and how to negotiate the price apply if the vehicle is not avail/not in-stock and has to be built and ordered from the manufacturer?
Good question. I went to a Honda dealer last week and they said they wouldn't discount the car at all. Yesterday, they sent me a text that they would knock $500 off. I told them I was going to wait until their inventory gets better. Slim pickings right now.
Hello from Scottsdale, AZ. Would love to buy a car from you, you seem very honest. Looking for a used/new Jeep 4 dr, hardtop Rubicon, Nacho Yellow color. Please let me know if you run across one, 21, 22, 23. Love your videos, I follow all of them.
So should we know exactly what's on the contract before we come in? The OTD (out the door) price not just the vehicale price? Sorry if that's a dumb question.
Agree do the research! So much pricing info available online. Go in armed with information ! Disagree about not negotiating at dealership. I want to see and drive the exact car I'm buying. Yes now you are on their turf but no prob if you MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE DEAL. That is be willing to walk out at anytime. If you give them any hint you gotta have the car they will smell blood, You have given up all your power, and you're toast. Never trade in a car ! Trades are where dealers make a lot of money. Sell your own car. You almost always will do better. Agree get your own financing and just use that. From the time we sit down I give the sales person 1 hour....a little more generous than Mike. haha. After 30 mins I tell them move it along I got places to go. If we haven't cut a deal at the hour mark I walk. Tactic is to keep you there as long as possible and wear you down. Maintain control of the deal ! Lastly remember it's not up to the dealer to give you a great deal. It's up to you to get yourself a great deal. Business owners want to make as much as they can on their product. Can't blame them for that. If you don't like the terms you don't have to buy the car. Say no and walk out.
Used these techniques to purchase a new car. It worked and I felt very confident when making the deal . I knew what I was willing to pay and was very direct with what I know about the process. I got the deal I wanted Thanks
Curious if we are able to pay under sticker yet? I usually buy around the $25 range and knock off 2-3k. Not sure if I can still do that with low inventory.
I agree with you, but some dealers are not willing to take off the dumb add-ons. So how would you deal with that even though you found the vehicle you really like?
Shop around. Contact every dealer within your reasonable driving distance. I did 200 miles abd found a dealer 2 hours north of me. They were willing to work remotely and I saved at least 1500 for 2 hours of driving. Definitely worth my time
Can you offer me some advice? Have a 2014 Camry SE V6 with 170,000 km (not miles). I want to approach the dealer that has a 2014 Corolla LE for sale asking $12,300 or so. In a normal situation, the trade in is kept secret unyil a price is negotiated on the car, but in my case I want to exchange, and even take a loss on the Camry. Help!
I worked for Toyota service, I have a SPIN number. I've serviced Toyotas with 60k and completely ruined, and I've seen a Corolla with 400k and basically fine. Depends on the driver and a flip of the coin.
This advice doesn’t seem to reflect current market. Cars aren’t on the lot….10 people behind you want the same car as dealerships can’t get them in from factory…to get that car quite often you have to put deposit down before it arrives because they are sold before they get there. Can’t negotiate much in this market online or in person.
Hey Mike. I have a question. Im in california and I qualify for the CVRP and CVAP. Should i let the dealership know ahead of time i have those or wait until i come in to do that process? Its for the Bolt euv.
I don't see them going away. (they have been around for 40 years). But I am very good at getting them taken off the car by proving I am or will be loyal to them. Loyalty is your BEST bargaining chip in this market.
@@kabloosh699 agreed, looking at the 2023 Colorado and Canyons, called multiple lots and told “we had 1 coming but it’s sold” probably have to order one either way I’ll be waiting months
@@bobbysmith9411 I've been in talks with several dealers and none of them have been able to even put in for a ZR2 yet. The one is a volume dealer so they may even provide a discount on it. They got like 25 Silverado ZR2s on their website and another 200 Silverados. I don't think they are going to have the same problem with the Colorado though, but you never know.
@@kabloosh699 appreciate the info, I’m leaning towards the AT4. Hoping we’re their are limited trims, most with the same engine/power train this will help them get a decent number of these new Colorado and Canyons out to dealers fairly soon. Fingers crossed. Update this if you are able to get anything ordered!
Question mike: Wondering if I can still get free delivery built in during these times? My last 2 vehicles Oct 2020 (hyundai) and Dec 2013 (Lexus) I never stepped foot in the dealership, did everything via phone and email and had the vehicles delivered to me both times. The Hyundai deal I had shopped and worked approx 3-4 months, until I had a manager of a dealership call and beat my offered price.
Quick Question... Generally, is there room for negotiation on a new vehicle? For instance, Sticker is 43500 but with discounts and a couple of bonus incentives, the asking price is 35999. I'm just curious if there is any room for negotiation or are most dealers "all in" in discounts like that.
@mike Davenport Hi , I am Jay from Sri Lanka, lost contact with you as I got stranded abroad due to Covid19. Heard that you moved from Hurstbourne dealership. How do I get in touch with you , currently resident at Mt Washington KY Best regards J
What do you think about a new car dealer that has a new vehicle coming in that you want and have agreed on the OTD pricing. They said they do not take deposits on the the vehicle but have your name on it. They call you when it it comes in and is ready for pick up. If you have not picked it up in 24 hours, they sell it to the next person on the list or put it out on their lot for sale. I live 4 hours away and may not be able to just jump in my vehicle and go get it right then. I think they should give you more time especially if you are willing to give them a deposit to let them know you are on your way asap, say within 48 hours or 72 hours. I really don't understand their policy on just the 24 hour policy to get there and not willing to take a deposit to get there with a little added time. Your thoughts?
I just moved into the states a year ago, I don't know how dealers are working in the US but I looked for a small car with stick shift(I hate automatics) and found 9 years old car in one of the biggest dealerships in town - Also imports 4 different car brands. A clean carfax, single owner and the engine felt very good - I didn't negotiate almost at all and closed the deal with 1,000$ above KBB(In this crazy market it is not the worst). Thinking that buying a car from a big highly rated dealership with clean history and warranty will give me good and quite experience, I found out that the dealer just painted over an ugly rust spot that started to bobble out, and when I've entered the car into the first "free" service they want to bill me for 1,500$ of wear and tear of suspension parts that are not covered in the warranty(you can see that the wear is not new, I fixed it outside of the main dealership) - I've learned the hard way what car dealers in the US are and to be much more careful with them.
You actually do have to go to the dealership, because you can not get them to tell you truth as to wheather they have the car they advertise on the lot or not, I actually had a salesman ask me why i wasn't buying a car today, after he got through telling me they did not have the car they advertised or one like it on the lot,
all you have to do is ask your salesperson to make a video on that car because you want to see what the seats look like and to be sure the vehicles has all the options you want... Therefore you get your question answered if the car is really there or not. they can lie, fake pics, etc. But they can't fake video.
Wait a second...The dealer will never give any even hint of a price until you talk financing or payment method. How do you get them to agree on a price before they know how you're going to pay?
I don't know about used car places, but that's definitely not true of dealerships, new or used. They absolutely will give you a price on the car if you want, especially if you tell them you're willing to consider financing as a possible option, but you also have outside financing already so it may just be a cash deal for them.
Although I applaud you for your Chevy loyalty, GM has had and continues to have it's own quality issues; for instance the recent 2022-2023 Malibu front impact bar recall due to improper welding. And I'm not singling out GM. Lord knows, Ford and Chrysler have their share of problems.
I'll take a Lexus over a Chevy everyday of the week. Just it's a glorified Toyota but I've had several and yes I've had them worked on but it's been few and far between and it was minor repairs.
Only prob with Lexus, is the parts are a lot more expensive than standard Toyota. So when something finally breaks it costs a lot more. Pretty much the same for any lux brand - Acura, Infiniti, Cadillac, Lincoln, etc. But yeah , Toyota and Honda are typically far more reliable than Chevy or Ford.
Lawyers for Americans All numbers from a car dealer are useless. What you want to know is the total amount for the new car, in other words, the amount the check should be made out for, this amount agreed to by both parties and including the vin number before you go into a dealership. You have to decide whether this is a fair price.
that acronym doesn't make sense, economy and affordability are pretty much the same and so is safety and dependability. that's just sales jargon. there are only three categories: economy, reliability and power. But that's just my two cents.
economic has nothing to do with price. It has to do with maintenance, gas prices, MPG, tires, etc. Affordability has to do with price, monthly payment.
People say this since dealerships exists. Nothing is changing. Your advice is terrible. Someone will waste their time… the whole video here is to help people to negotiate a good deal and save time. Your advice will waste their time and they will end up with no car.
Love the car buying advice at the end, but, tbh, I think your Chevy bias was showing when you were inferring that Toyota's don't deserve their reputation as one of the most reliable brands. Yes, every vehicle will have issues, but we know that, presuming all regular maintenance is done on a given vehicle, you're more likely to get to 300-400k+ miles on a Toyota than on a Chevy.....and this is coming from a guy who doesn't even own a Toyota (at least not yet)! We own 2 older Fords (2006 and 2012) and a Chevy (2016). Guess which vehicle I have more problems with? Of course, you'll find a high-milage Chevy out there occasionally. However, I'd venture to guess that you'd find more high-milage Toyota's out on the road.
I like your content. But it would be easier to consume if you slow down a little. Remember there are parts of this country we're we will not say that many words in an hour.
My 2022 Toyota Highlander with 20,000 miles towed to the dealer yesterday after it left me stranded on the side of the highway with ignition coil and electronics problems.
chevy has Nothing to compete with Corolla or Civic. Sonic might be the ugliest car in America. Chevy got rid of the awesome looking Cruze and cruze hatchback. Camaro is a 2 door and stupid expensive. Chevy has nothing to offer anyone look for $25K or less. Not everyone wants an SUV or over priced truck.

How long customer should keep the loan for the finance manager to make commissions?
Ty Mike!
Car dealers in my area have a market adjustment above MSRP. Do you see these going away anytime soon?
I don't see them going away. (they have been around for 40 years). But I am very good at getting them taken off the car by proving I am or will be loyal to them. Loyalty is your BEST bargaining chip in this market.
Any major tips when you order a vehicle from the dealership. Ie the new 2023 Colorado or Canyon from GMC? Any tips appreciated
Definitely wouldn't mind seeing a video on that especially since in this market it is becoming more and more common to just order from the factory.
@@kabloosh699 I wanna do the same thing 😂
Analogy??
@Mike'sCarStore Can you still negotiate the price if you pay for the car with cash?
You can. But don’t tell them you are paying cash. It won’t help. Watch this video for reference.
@@MikesCarStore At what point would it be best to inform them how you're paying with cash? Thanks
Also, do I pretend I’m going to finance it to get a good price and then spring it on them that I’m paying cash?
SPACED would be an acronym, not an analogy. Just FYI. :)
You didn't talk at all about the finance manager and their upselling tactics
Quick Question... Generally, is there room for negotiation on a new vehicle? For instance, Sticker is 43500 but with discounts and a couple of bonus incentives, the asking price is 35999. I'm just curious if there is any room for negotiation or are most dealers "all in" in discounts like that.
All in for sure.
Do you need to put money down on a car?

No test drives?

But they don’t even have them on the lot
Sorry you had to find out the hard way
You actually do have to go to the dealership, because you can not get them to tell you truth as to wheather they have the car they advertise on the lot or not, I actually had a salesman ask me why i wasn't buying a car today, after he got through telling me they did not have the car they advertised or one like it on the lot,
all you have to do is ask your salesperson to make a video on that car because you want to see what the seats look like and to be sure the vehicles has all the options you want...

@@morebeer7673 Not really I have 4 Lexus and the part prices are comparable unless you buy from a Lexus dealer then you'll pay a premium.
Think u meant acronym...not analogy
Lawyers for Americans
All numbers from a car dealer are useless. What you want to know is the total amount for the new car, in other words, the amount the check should be made out for, this amount agreed to by both parties and including the vin number before you go into a dealership. You have to decide whether this is a fair price.
Don’t tell anyone your rate
Damn i wish you made this a lot sooner. Cause i bought a new car like a month and a half ago.
I’ve had many Mustangs but not anymore. Too many people have them and you like like a Joe.

that acronym doesn't make sense, economy and affordability are pretty much the same and so is safety and dependability. that's just sales jargon. there are only three categories: economy, reliability and power. But that's just my two cents.
economic has nothing to do with price. It has to do with maintenance, gas prices, MPG, tires, etc. Affordability has to do with price, monthly payment.
How to work a car deal? Say 12k for this car. If they say no, just walk out. The pain will start for these scum bags.
MPG inversely proportional to Fun Factor......FACT
Oh, learn how to work on your own vehicles and run them till they cannot be repaired anymore. Preferably 20 years.
I like your content. But it would be easier to consume if you slow down a little. Remember there are parts of this country we're we will not say that many words in an hour.
Toyota….321000 miles on last car….that’s why.
Just pay the toyota tax and get it over with the facts dont lie
😅 'Promosm'
wrong Toyotas dont break down
My 2022 Toyota Highlander with 20,000 miles towed to the dealer yesterday after it left me stranded on the side of the highway with ignition coil and electronics problems.
Anything with moving parts eventually breaks down. It's just how physics works.

chevy has Nothing to compete with Corolla or Civic.
