For real. My sister married a Japanese guy that she met in college and moved to Japan afterwards. I visited her this summer vacation and she took me to a Toyota dealership to buy her first car there. It was a night and day difference compared to the stealerships here who added a mandatory dealership package addon and a market adjustment price on top of the MSRP when I was buying a Ford Maverick for college
That's because return salesmen aren't apart of the business model. The turn over rate in sales and management is high, while they still have to meet performance targets in the limited time they work for these dealerships. Leased my last Mercedes and was in the financial guys office to sign papers. When he printed out the contract for me to sign I noticed a few things. The advertised acquisition fee from the website was $700. My contract said $900 for acquisition fee. I also found I was being charged $300 for the lost key insurance I never asked for. I looked at him and then proceeded to X out those lines. Then I said while you’re printing out a new contract take off the 3 year maintenance fee I was going to buy. You are going to offer that to me for nothing because I’ve bought 3 other cars from this dealership! I then looked him in the eye and said “ if you try to argue or say sorry that was a mistake, I’m walking right now. He didn’t say a word. I signed the papers and walked out with the car. I still have the car 6 years later. I ended up buying it under replacement cost.
I always laugh at myself when someone mentions the paint protection plans because a car dealer definitely got me with that. When I bought my last car in 2017, I had recently moved from OH to CA and he convinced me the California sun would ruin my paint and I would need it. I guess I missed the day in science class where we learned California has a different sun than Ohio 🤣
Bought my current truck with fuel tool boxes in the bed. They said they lost the keys the day I came to pick it up. They replaced the missing key fob but refused to replace the key to the tool boxes. Let’s just say it cost them 100 bucks each for my time. I actually picked the locks and replaced with new ones. When it was all said and done. I refuse to go thru this dealership again.
The Problem is, that Every Dearler does this. When I tell them that I'm Not going to pay for (example) a second delivery charge, or an $8oo prep fee, etc. the sales guys tells me that he's going to have to talk to his manager and then they leave me sitting there for 15 to 45 minutes by myself, and when they finally return they just say that everybody has to pay all these fees, bla, bla etc. I've walked out of so many dealerships, that I suppect that my name has been "Flagged", that when I now go into dealerships they won't even talk with me after they know who I am.
Recently I have been car shopping. The add on items I see at Toyota, Honda, and Mazda are door edge protectors. Thin clear plastic strips attached to the edge of the door. The cost is $395.
Attempted to buy 2021 Q8 from Hyundai Anaheim and the price went up 4k from the online price for the “optional add on’s”. They added 2k for GPS system and 2k for paint protection for 5 years. Took a day and they took off the GPS add on, and they never would take off the paint protection add on. Continued to tell me they are under retail and under water on the vehicle. Kept holding my ground to buy at advertised price which they never came back at. Thanks for all the info, helped me in my negotiations!
Excellent video man, you forgot N2 on tires. In BMW where I live they tried to charge me $299, I told the manager that was a deal breaker, he said if I am buying an $80k car and I complain about a $299 fee I should reconsider. On my way out of the dealer he agreed to take out the charge and I bought the car. 😂
Just bought a Mercedes, didn’t have any issues, they weren’t pushy, but this is a cool video. I’m glad to see that I didn’t make any mistakes by buying a lot of the useless things they ran by me.
This sums up why I will never buy a new car off the lot ever again. Local KIA dealer literally had “dealer markup” on the itemized section of the window sticker.
I recently bought a used vehicle. The dealership I went to was great to work with. They didn’t try to upsell or add anything extra. I financed through them and my monthly payment was actually $20 less than the quote
I used to work for a Cadillac service department. I encouraged every customer to look at a factory extended warranty. I did this because I was trying to minimize their out-of-pocket repair costs. I had customers that in three successive months they had mechanical breakdowns each between 1500 and $2000 at the time I believe the cost for a 500 deductible was around $1600-$1800. I think zero deductible plan was just over 2000. I further explained that in my opinion getting the zero deductible would pay itself off in a pretty short amount of time, I can’t tell you how many times, customers come back to me and thank me for recommending the extended warranty with zero deductible! My own personal opinion if you buy your reliable car such as a Toyota or Honda maybe, you can skip an extended warranty. It all boils down to your comfort level and your budget.
^^^THIS. These things are now already done before the car goes on the lot, they have already added it in. They advertise a lower price, then when you get there, all these things are tacked on, but there's no way to remove them or negotiate them off - they tell you "Every car on our lot gets this s00per-d00per ceramic coating and pinstriping and nitrogen-filled tires and blah blah blah." The whole industry has just become sickening and I won't even set foot on a lot anymore.

I just recently went to a ford dealership is Los Angeles to purchase two Mavericks, I wanted the lowest trim because they were going to be for my pest control company and technicians were going to drive them, the dealership quoted me $28,000 plus they wanted me to pay $1,900 per vehicle for a paint protection, I told them no, I was not going to pay that and they let me walk out

Most people don't understand the concept of "buying the dip" buying the dip is all about buying digital assets when their prices are down and selling off when the price rises.
Love when they pull the take it or leave it. I leave it Everytime. I’ll watch them and hunt those aged units until that used lot manager is begging me to take it at auction whole sale price
I bought a C7 and finance guy said GPS theft alarm was already installed in the car and cost $699 and I would have to pay monthly subscription. I told him that GPS is a little black box with a couple wires attached to the battery terminal. It can be taken off 5 min otherwise I’m walking. He took it off no questions.
They tried to get me with a “Resist All” $2200 interior and exterior protection plan and “Window Etching” $200, have them etch the vin in the window . I said I don’t want that, they said it’s pre-installed. I told them then bad investment on your part and you guys will have to take the lost, I’m not paying for that, I didn’t.
Good video! Yep bought new '24 GM Pickup and they wanted about $800 for side steps, not to mention they will be financed! I declined and purchased better looking steps for $350 online
You can't buy a car in florida. They advertise a great price. Then they add around 4 gran. They wanted to charge 1500 more for no trade. I had one shipped from Texas and saved almost 10000 for the exact vehicle.

@@ChevyDudeyou don’t have to disclose it but you also worded it as if they are a separate company in a video about dealer scams. Not trying to bust your chops but I thought the same thing.
The tire and wheel warranty is a good purchase. BMW tires and wheels are expensive. I’ve had two tires and two wheels replaced. 50 copay. Wheels and tires totaled over 2k.
A few years ago ChevyDude shared a story that one of his customers was driving home after buying a new Camaro and a truck in front of it drop a box of nails by accident. The customer needed 4 new tires on the first day. You may be right but it depends on price of the warranty and what it covers
Depends on what you’re purchasing it for. I got mine for $250. When you consider how expensive these wheels and tires are on some of these vehicles it’s worth it to me.
You're not wrong especially if you live in an area where the roads are similar to a war zone or you are one of those drivers that doesn't pay attention to craters in the road. I love people who come in and complain about the cost of tires at our dealership not knowing those 22 inch low profile tires can cost upwards of 500.00 a piece. A wheel can cost hundreds of not thousands of dollars as well. Buying these policies are cheap insurance next to what one tire and wheel replacement can cost.
That is why I do my research before going into a car dealership before buying my vehicle and wrangling for the best deal possible. If the experience had been pleasant and not painful, I patronize that dealership for the occasional maintenance service.
Paint protection? So you’re telling me the vehicle brand I’m thinking of buying uses such low quality paint, perhaps I should buy another brand of vehicle 🤔
It's a great line to use. Extended warranty - but your salesman said Toyotas are super reliable?. Paint protection and rustproofing - do you mean these cars are built so badly I need this stuff? Maybe I should rethink buying this car. Shuts the finance ghoul right down.
It's not just cars. I used to work at a furniture store and they pushed fabric protection hard, $35 for an apolstered chair, $50 for a love seat, and $75 for a couch. They would take one can of fabric spray and haphazardly spray most of it on the furniture, not even turning cushions over. There's your protection.
Toyota dealership was selling me a car. The salesman told me "Toyota are the best cars. They never fail". Then continued to try to sell me an extended warranty. That's when I said "why would I pay for extended warranty for a car from a brand that is the best and never fails?" There was a long silence after that.
@@mdruben Ahh, but the details of the factory extended warranty MATTER. Honda Goldwings (used to, may or may not still) and ST1300 motorcycles both came with 3 year UNLIMITED mileage factory warranties. You could purchase another 4 years of UNLIMITED mileage. THAT was a helluva good deal. 7 years of unlimited mileage. And yes, there were riders who would put over 300k miles on the bikes in that 7 years.
Installation of non-OEM parts does NOT automatically void your warranty. IF the parts cause damage, THEN that damage is not covered by the warranty, but their mere presence has NO legal bearing on your warranty. This is settled Federal law. If it weren't, then using Pennzoil oil rather than Motorcraft oil in your Ford would void the warranty.
Speaking about keys, when my son and I bought our last cars, both of the dealerships said they had all three keys. When we asked to see them they couldn’t provide them, but said they were somewhere. We both said when you find all the keys we will come back and sign for the cars. Funny they found the keys right away.
I went to Hendricks Honda in Charleston, SC. I wanted a new Honda Accord. So what was on all of them? LoJack. $750. Told sales guy I was interested but I wasn’t paying for LoJack. “How about we lower the cost so you’re not paying for LoJack?” Me…”No. if you’re willing to lower the cost so I’m not paying for LoJack, then lower the cost AND remove the LoJack and cost” No deal…they wouldn’t budge. Neither would I.
Tire and rim protection can be beneficial depending on where you live and how the roads. Ive worked at a Mercedes dealer and let me tell you that warranty came in handy. I would see the same car come while the previous claim i have made for tire hasn’t been paid yet
You have to be careful and read the fine print. Some of them ask you to follow specific maintenance routines with the dealership and the dealership only, and that's where they get their profit (Alignment, rotation and what not).
And the biggest ripoff of at all is extended warranty insurance from a dealership. If a purchaser wants buy the extended warranty insurance, skip at the dealership and buy directly from the insurance company that sells the insurance. Cheaper.
Tire and Wheel I recommend only on two cars I sell. Golf R and GTI. Low Profile tires in Michigan WILL be an issue. I went through three ties and a rim in 3 years. 20% of my lease turn in's lost their second key. I don't understand it, but they do. Key's now are expensive to replace and reprogram to the car.
I hope you sell car in my island man you the man to buy the car from you. The honest guy I ever seen call. I’m a retail owner too. I lied honesty thanks brother.
How about that frame they put around your license plate with their dealership's name on it? Free advertising for them. I told the salesman that I didn't want it on there. He seemed so surprised! LoL.
Adding non-factory items to your car does not void the warranty. The wording is clear: if that part directly causes damage, then it is void. So if you install a Garmin Camera system and your transmission fails, they can't void the warranty, but if it is installed incorrectly and it shorts out the electrical, that's on you. That's why you hire insured companies to do the installation. They are responsible.
As to 'road hazard' warranties, you may be able to put in a claim to the government agency that operates the road, bridge, tunnel or even your insurer for such damage as wasn't properly maintaining the surface. I worked for a government agency (PANYNJ) that operated bridges, tunnels, roadways at their airport and other facilities and saw claims for wheel and tire damage, usually on more expensive cars and were reimbursed in full or part.
Other side, Only pay agreed price plus TT&L. If the dealer has already added extra stuff and does not remove the cost, go to a dealer who does not add the extra stuff.
About #9 tire and wheel protection, i got that on my last new car, and I saved alot of money over the last few years, i've been really unlucky with flats, and my dealership was awesome on another occassion, i think 6 free tires out of it, and 19 inch tires almost 400$ a tire, if you do alot of driving especially in cities, i recommend getting this one, but only if you got a good dealership
They tried to charge me all those fees so didn't buy a vehical and 300.00 for an additional key for my old dodge that's alas on its last leg. I bought my key online and programed it at home. But I want that white truck lol you showed. Or a dodge with no frills for our sar team
you are so right on this. this guy is so wrong about tire and wheel protection. had it on many cars and it worked all the time for curb rash and tire bubbles from potholes
Back in the 90s I tried buying a Buick from Gustafson motors in Fargo and the rep Jerry lundegaard insisted I get the true coat paint sealant. After going back and forth for awhile I just ended up caving in.
Went with my wife's granny to a chevy dealer in Miamisburg ohio...she bought a new trax....they were asking $1200 for paint protection...and yes I shot that down quickly
actually the strobing third brake light has been proven to reduce rear end accidents. they are now just starting to put them on semi trailers after excessively testing it out and getting FMCSA approval to install them.
I emailed six dealers what I wanted and asked for quote. Received three, all within $500 of each other. Paid 18% less than MSRP. But, that was 2011. Easy, though.
I will only disagree with the road hazard. I paid 1050.00 for my 2019 Corvette and I’ve hade 6000.00 worth of wheels and tires replaced at no cost!!! Fidelity is what my dealer uses.
I used to work with a company that would offer the dealerships a package called the Advantage Package. Within the package, it will include literally every single thing in this video… but the company would charge the dealers $200 or $250. The dealerships would label it on their car sticker as the Advantage program and charge customers up to $4,500.00. It’s bs. Please please please walk away if you see it. It’s not worth it.
I’m doing truck shopping now here in Texas. What should I pay for a new Chevy? What % should I get them down? What advice do you have for me? I’m looking at a new Silverado.
I agree with everything here except for the voiding of the warranty subject. That is simply not true. No manufacturer can void a warranty because you made a small modification...thats a federal law.
I recently bought a used car and they tried to charge me $891 for a used car inspection. I told them that that was part of the legal requirement in our state for them to conduct that inspection so I'm not paying for it. I was about to walk out and they took it off the invoice. That was among two other charges I told him I wasn't going to pay for, including an appearance package and locking wheel nuts.

I was shopping for a BMW a while back and the amount of bs fees they added turned me off. I ended buying a VW GTI manual because I really wanted one. It's cheap and I paid cash so I really didn't care about the fees too much. Though I am planning to buy a Merc later this year so this video will hopefully be useful. I hate bs fees. BY the way, San Antonio BMW has the worst bs fees of the ones in central Texas.
Appreciate the info but how do you avoid paying for these Dealer and Window Stickered Option Add-ons? Here in FL Dealerships love to tack-on cheap Window Tint and Plastic Tape (Selling as Door Edge Guards!). Subtracting these Costs from your negotiated Out-the-Door Price or move on to the next Dealership? Do appreciate your efforts to educate!
Florida is one of the worst states in the country for this. I have a video coming up geared towards Florida people. The obvious first thing you do is walk away from the dealership. Secondly, you can shop anywhere in the country. Find a vehicle that you’re looking for and ship it to Florida and still be cheaper than buying your car and an actual floor dealership. So look at that option too.
Do you have written checklist online? My sister is actively looking for a new car and it would be nice to give her a checklist on important things to talk about and fees not to pay.

Back in the day i did get the wheel/tire protection but i used it to my advantage. I bought bent rims and went to the dealership and got brand new wheels because of the warranty. But dont reccomend doing that
Most of the stuff you said is true except for the ceramic coating i can buy ceramic coating over the counter.from alot of stores nowadays chemical guys adams theres a few companies that make good products
Warranty Administrator here. Brother, you need to do your homework on warranty. The Magnuson Moss Warranty Act requires manufacturers to honor the original warranty unless they can prove that the aftermarket modification (either the parts or installation) was responsible for the failure that caused warranty repairs.
@@shag139simple, hard fact that you may not want to hear but here it goes. Initially, the dealer. The dealer will do everything in its power to decline a warrantable repair in favor of customer pay, which of course is a lot more profitable to them. From that point on out it becomes an admitted nightmare for the customer. You can reach out to the manufacturers customer service or customer care line and open a case. They will follow up with the dealer but whether or not the dealer will actually choose to handle the matter is another one of life’s great mysteries. A manufacturer DPSM or FOM may get involved, maybe they won’t. It may be the judge that ultimately decides but if it’s gotten to that point, you’re talking lawyers and tons of court fees.
I was fooled into taking the extended warranty on my Civic, one of the dumbest decision ever. At least that car still runs fine even after 12 years without much problems.
Hey Mr. Dude.A couple big things you forgot.I work for a large new car dealer, and every car ,new and used, had an upcharge for nitro filled tires,,tape stripes on new cars and really high doc fees. They would say you have to pay for those because it's already on the car. They also had no negotiate on the price of the vehicle, their price was on a sign from the inside mirror. They said hassel free shopping,no salesmen. All thier salesmen were called managers, same difference.Bottom line was it cost a lot more to shop there, but people liked it becasue they didn't have to hassel about the price.
Some people like to haggle.. they don’t trust stealerships as they shouldn’t and the consumer obviously has no way of knowing if the set price is the best price.
Quick question; are doc stamps and document fees the same thing? Or is doc stamps an excise tax that is different line item added to the total tax on the vehicle.

The add-ons aren't being offered as part of the sales process, they're added before the car's even put up for sale.
^^^THIS. These things are now already done before the car goes on the lot, they have already added it in. They advertise a lower price, then when you get there, all these things are tacked on, but there's no way to remove them or negotiate them off - they tell you "Every car on our lot gets this s00per-d00per ceramic coating and pinstriping and nitrogen-filled tires and blah blah blah."
The whole industry has just become sickening and I won't even set foot on a lot anymore.

Best way to avoid scams at dealerships, is to avoid going to a dealership period.
Where can you purchase a new vehicle then?
I just recently went to a ford dealership is Los Angeles to purchase two Mavericks, I wanted the lowest trim because they were going to be for my pest control company and technicians were going to drive them, the dealership quoted me $28,000 plus they wanted me to pay $1,900 per vehicle for a paint protection, I told them no, I was not going to pay that and they let me walk out
There are a lot of Ford dealers in Los Angeles.

You can't buy a car in florida. They advertise a great price. Then they add around 4 gran. They wanted to charge 1500 more for no trade. I had one shipped from Texas and saved almost 10000 for the exact vehicle.

@@matw1x Yes and destination charges too. It’s all a racket, and then the dealerships wonder why they can’t move vehicles
The delta between invoice and msrp is a lot smaller now leaving less room as well.
The tire and wheel warranty is a good purchase. BMW tires and wheels are expensive. I’ve had two tires and two wheels replaced. 50 copay. Wheels and tires totaled over 2k.
It might be a good option for you but a scam for the rest of us.
Car insurance covers this
That is why I do my research before going into a car dealership before buying my vehicle and wrangling for the best deal possible.
But the flashing brake light is not OEM, It’s aftermarket. So hopefully buyers don’t believe whatever the dealer sells is OEM.
I sell tire and wheel for $395, the paint protection for only $311. I agree with the other stuff being bad things to purchase.
Speaking about keys, when my son and I bought our last cars, both of the dealerships said they had all three keys. When we asked to see them they couldn’t provide them, but said they were somewhere. We both said when you find all the keys we will come back and sign for the cars.
Funny they found the keys right away.
I completely agree until tire and rim protection. I had multiple flat tires and always get a new one.
Mike you are pulling all the stops out on this video, Well said I must say. Wishing you all the best!
Yeah, every single thing you said is true and I have experienced my self at dealership.
I went to Hendricks Honda in Charleston, SC. I wanted a new Honda Accord. So what was on all of them? LoJack. $750. Told sales guy I was interested but I wasn’t paying for LoJack. “How about we lower the cost so you’re not paying for LoJack?” Me…”No. if you’re willing to lower the cost so I’m not paying for LoJack, then lower the cost AND remove the LoJack and cost”
No deal…they wouldn’t budge. Neither would I.
Yep Hendricks in Dallas loads the Lojack you on new Honda's also.
Tire and rim protection can be beneficial depending on where you live and how the roads. Ive worked at a Mercedes dealer and let me tell you that warranty came in handy. I would see the same car come while the previous claim i have made for tire hasn’t been paid yet
It was for me when I hit a pothole and damaged two rims and tires.
You have to be careful and read the fine print. Some of them ask you to follow specific maintenance routines with the dealership and the dealership only, and that's where they get their profit (Alignment, rotation and what not).
I had Kia of Rockwall try and add a $2000 “Rockwall Package” because the car was being sold in the city of Rockwall, TX. That’s it, no other reason.
Thank you! This is great information! Would you mind doing a video like this for used cars, please?
And the biggest ripoff of at all is extended warranty insurance from a dealership. If a purchaser wants buy the extended warranty insurance, skip at the dealership and buy directly from the insurance company that sells the insurance. Cheaper.
That only works if you can find the pipeline to that insurance company and they allow you to buy directly from them.
Found a 2025 Ram 1500 that was charging for the Hurricane engine on the window sticker even though it was in STANDARD equipment list.
There are 2 different hurricane engines, the standard output, aka standard equipment, versus the high output, aka added option. Nothing nefarious!
I have been shopping online and dealerships won’t provide the window sticker. They send build sheets or a work up sheet. I move on!
Good luck with that fiasco
Other side, Only pay agreed price plus TT&L. If the dealer has already added extra stuff and does not remove the cost, go to a dealer who does not add the extra stuff.
About #9 tire and wheel protection, i got that on my last new car, and I saved alot of money over the last few years, i've been really unlucky with flats, and my dealership was awesome on another occassion, i think 6 free tires out of it, and 19 inch tires almost 400$ a tire, if you do alot of driving especially in cities, i recommend getting this one, but only if you got a good dealership
Wish i would’ve watched this before i just bought my new Durango. I bought the wheels and tire protection and the dents and dings package🤦🏾♂️
Why do you assume that things like paint protection are actually applied?

What about documentation fees ? what is the maximum it should be?
Can you get them to remove the step off of that specific truck so you don't have to pay for it?
They tried to charge me all those fees so didn't buy a vehical and 300.00 for an additional key for my old dodge that's alas on its last leg. I bought my key online and programed it at home. But I want that white truck lol you showed. Or a dodge with no frills for our sar team
Only one id get is the tire and wheel. Have had it on the last 3 purchased cars and have used it several times.

actually the strobing third brake light has been proven to reduce rear end accidents. they are now just starting to put them on semi trailers after excessively testing it out and getting FMCSA approval to install them.
They have been on motorcycles for years
How do they get around the law in every state that says brake light have to be solid red?
They’re actually called “SilverRipoffs” for a reason!!!
I agree with everything here except for the voiding of the warranty subject. That is simply not true. No manufacturer can void a warranty because you made a small modification...thats a federal law.
I want to know about purchasing a new Toyota Scienna. Dealerships say they are in high demand, and most dealers do not have them in stock.

Warranty Administrator here. Brother, you need to do your homework on warranty. The Magnuson Moss Warranty Act requires manufacturers to honor the original warranty unless they can prove that the aftermarket modification (either the parts or installation) was responsible for the failure that caused warranty repairs.
Great and who makes that decision?
Stealerships don’t do their homework
@@lefty_1976you are so right, it’s a battle of attrition and they will wear you down to the point where you’re not going to want to continue.
