So the takeaway here is to never finance through the dealership and triple check the paperwork! Thanks for that advice.

No, the takeaway is to relax, stop over-thinking the process so much, & take a few minutes to read what you are signing before you agree to a purchase.

Financing through the dealer is ok, if you have checked around and know what terms you can get from your credit union. Sometimes the dealer financing deal is better than you can get elsewhere.

The only things that I would pay for when buying a car:
    1. Base price + DPH
    2. Factory installed options & accessories
    3. Taxes & other gov fees
(Basically, factory sticker + required gov fees)
Things that I would not pay for:
1: Dealer adjustment fees aka mark-ups
    2. Dealer installed add-ons & accessories
    3. Warranties, insurance, service products
(Basically, any fees made by the dealer)

And make sure you only pay for the doc fee once. I had a dealer try to charge me a $400 doc fee 3 separate times. Getting through that nonsense took forever.

Just took delivery of a new car (2024 Buick Envision) on Jan. 2. During negotiations I literally laughed out loud when the salesman pulled out a four-square worksheet. "Thought those went away in the 1990's", I said. After that the games ended. Even escaped the business office unscathed when they realized I couldn't be scammed.

The best way to handle it, is to tell the salesman within the first 5 minutes that your out the door price can be no greater than X. The floor guy will always agree to it, but when you get to the finance dept., that's when the real BS starts. They'll put the screws to you trying to get you to sign off on profit padding add-ons and services. They too need to be told that your final price is not to be exceeded or you'll walk.

Another big potential scam area is the 'trade in'. Many dealerships will overvalue the car so make it look like you got a good, but inflate the deal. elsewhere.
Make sure the per month payment is with the best and lowest interest rates you can get. Too often they will play with your credit score, that push loans with lenders that give them the best commission.
Could you do an episode about trade in pricing by you and by many dealers.

No, we don’t. And we won’t. Just like when you go to Walmart or the grocery store, you don’t ask them the cost of the products you’re buying. The same goes for the other 99.999999999% of products that consumers purchase-they don’t stress over the cost. What truly matters is whether it’s affordable and if there’s value in it.

The issue that I see here if you can be out there with the salesman and you say hey, I want the out the door price, right? Then once we agree on that, I fill out the credit application, etc. right they run my credit but then I go in and talk to the finance guy just like you just said and now I’m looking at anywhere from a two to 4000 $ difference that I did not agree on with the salesperson out at the desk inside the dealership there.. so that time when this happens and I assume it’s gonna happen they’ve already run my credit report so for me to get up and walk away at that point which is what I would do now my credits already gone down. I don’t know what percentage every time someone checks it and then I’m gonna have to go to some other dealership that may lie to me the same wayhow do you get around that?
