Chain Issues & Sailing Antarctica Mini Series Pt. 2 - Ep. 24 RAN Sailing

  • The preparations for the Atlantic crossing are on-going i San Sebastián, La Gomera and we make a DIY anchor chain box and Q-flag. The boat neighbors give us a piece of the 95 kg Tuna they caught and we make sushi on board. In the Antarctica Sailing Mini Series Pt. 2 Johan sail to the Antarctic Peninsula and meet a lot of animals on the islands, rough weather and navigates between icebergs!
    We are a Swedish couple who wanted a different kind of life. So we moved in to our sailboat RAN, a one-off aluminium built Beason 40, and untied the lines in the middle of the Swedish winter and started sailing south along the coast of Europe. There is no set route and we will go where the wind and our minds takes us.
    Read more about us and the boat and get updates and photos!

    One of your finest!! You guys are just the *best*. Malin - your sangfroid when faced with the wasabi ....! And as for the "ferry to Hades" ..... as you say, Johan, echoes of Shackleton's epic voyage. Hats off to you guys, thanks for making some of the most inspiring sailing videos available online anywhere. Roy

    Oh man, there's so much I love about this video. Watching you guys problem solving the chain, laundry machine, the flag; Johan spiking Malin's sushi (ha!); and that epic trip to Antarctica! I like the camerawork in previous videos of the Canaries but this is awesome storytelling you guys! :-)

    A couple of guys that could have sailed to where the bikini beaches are instead do something comparable to climbing a mountain. Incredible. What an adventure. Did you see the UFO's that are based in the Antarctic?

    A pretty amazing video. How long did it take to travel from Elephant Island to South Georgia ? Your yacht looks so small and vulnerable in such a vast and inhospitable region. Did you ever feel that you had bitten off more than you could chew? Looking forward to the next video. Take care.

    • @RANSailing
      @RANSailing  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! It took us a bit more than 7 days. The feeling of vulnerability was ever present especially because of the GRP hull :-) Cheers /Johan

    The Antarctic footage is amazing. Krille's monologue is dramatic. I will say you two are very tough guys to make that voyage! Do you find such challenges sailing RAN? (That tuna looked really good.)Take care and happy sailing. Craig from South Carolina

    Im binge watching your adventures and remembering some things from our trip. A good Friend of ours Eef Williems is a captain of a private adventure tour boat (SV Tooluka). she used to operate out of Usuaia and Porto Williams. In 2010 she and her husband decided to return to Holland and along the way, explore Greenland. During the trip, He was diagnosed with Cancer, died and was buried at sea in the Channel East of Nuuk, Greenland. The local Community held a vigil and "sang him out". She now gives private tours in the Arctic and NW passage. www.tooluka.nl/locatie.php?taal=UK&reis=2013_4
    Ah yes. the smell of 1000 penguins crapping, throwing up (feeding) semi-digested fish/creel and sea lions.... :) They didnt say anything about that in the tour brochure.

    Another great video - I know I am going to really enjoy it when the carpenters ruler comes out. Great solution for the extended chain locker - I think it is probably better in wood (did we miss the fibre glassing of the wood? ) than it would have been in AL. Oh and that washing machine - either you two are super heroes or that is not a full size domestic washing machine. Loved the South Atlantic/Antartic video and only have one question if you were running low on supplies prior to departure for South Georgia why did you not then go to the Falkland Islands rather than the much longer leg to Brazil?

    • @RANSailing
      @RANSailing  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Norman! The anchor box is glassed on the inside :-) The washing machine is only for 4 kg so we're not that strong :-) We didn't sail to the Falklands from South Georgia because it's against the prevailing winds and it would have been an even tougher sail. I would like to go there someday! Take care

    You guys were an intrepid pair! Tough guys! This was an amazing journey to Antarctica. Looking back, would you do it again, with the same boat? Did you have a watermaker? What was the worst weather you encountered down there?

    • @RANSailing
      @RANSailing  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Haha, thanks Donald! Looking back I'm not so sure I would do it again with that boat. She was a fine and seaworthy boat but the GRP hull is certainly not the most suitable material for those waters. Yes, we had a watermaker and it's more or less a must on a small boat down there. The worst weather was probably the storm after leaving South Georgia Island. We had 60 knots of wind during a whole night. But the worst experience was when we capsized outside Uruguay sailing south. That was the reason for getting the series drogue. Take care!

    Johan did a great job on the chain locker and new set-up for the washing machine without the benefit of a good workshop.
    The sailing in the Antarctic is crazy. It gives you a real appreciation of the conditions that Shakelton and his men lived through and their great accomplishment of sailing to Georgia Island just as you are doing but in a much better equipped boat and you are feeling like you are somewhere near the Gates of Hell, the cool part before you get to the heat. You guys are brave, crazy men. Very impressive.

    What is it about you Scandinavians that you go to the coldest waters on Earth?? You must have ice water in your veins, Johan. Yesterday we celebrated the 150th birthday of Canada. Our first European settlers apparently were Norsemen, living in what is now our province of Newfoundland. One of the most desolate barren areas of vegetation in the country. I am enjoying this mini-series. You two have gone where few would dare. Cheers.

    I have read books about Shackelton and watched documentaries about what he and his men endured. I am always amazed at the will of Shackelton, his expert leadership and the overall expertise of his crew. But it is a testament to Shackelton's wise choices for the tight knit group he gathered for this expedition that in the face of their extreme hardships none of them gave up hope and succumbed. That fact, that Shackelton did not lose a man, more than any other, tells me Shackelton was a great man.

    If the wasabi doesn't cause panic, you haven't used enough.

    Jag tycker ni ska göra ett avsnitt om bara relationer (ombord till skillnad från i land till exempel). Det vore väldigt spännande tycker jag.

    Är det du Malin som redigerar videorna? De är fint gjorda och särskilt ljudet är bättre än i många av "era konkurrenters" videos.

    Another great episode.... I remember when I first went to a Japanese Restaurant for my birthday, I saw this big green thing and ate it whole thinking it was a piece of Avocado. GREAT MISTAKE !!!! that Wasabi nearly blew my head off. Loving the Antarctica adventure but certainly not a place high on my Cruising Bucket list, I'll have something a little more warmer and Tropical please !!

    If you eat too strong wasabi. You can quell it with peanuts or peanut butter.

    Nice job all around. Like the chain locker laundry fix. The antarctic trip is just to cool the two of you doing it. Did you catch fish in the antarctic for food? I guess I can wait till next episode to hear how the food fuel situation worked out. Take care guys,

      Thank you! Not much fishing in Antarctica and the food-fuel situation got a lot worse on the passage to Brazil. On that leg we did catch some Tuna and Dorado :)
