      It’s funny how these things crop up coincidentally sometimes! Yeah it’s a never ending battle keeping the Aussies honest, my wife is still trying to claim the America’s cup for Aus because of Glen Ashby!

    I remember watching this about 4 years ago when I had just finished school. With no sailing experience and no real connection to the sea (I had grown up hundreds of kilometres from it), it lit a fire in me that must have smouldered along all this time. Re-watching again now, has reignited the thing, whatever it is, and I'm currently getting sailing lessons and learning as much as I can to seek out adventures just like this for myself one day.

    As a middle age guy from the Midwest who has never learned to swim or stepped foot on a boat, I always watch sailing documentaries and shows to fulfill my urge to run away from life and buy a sailboat. Maybe one day I'll get myself out there. Thanks for the show I'm looking forward to watching.

    • @MattTucker
      @MattTucker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hope that one day you give it a go mate, even if you don’t end up enjoying it at least you won’t be wondering what could have been.
      It could be a steep learning curve but if you find the right people to support you and enjoy the learning process it is an amazing way to see the world, or even just a harbour from a different angle while having fun.
      Good luck to you!

      @@MattTucker thank you, I told my wife by the time I'm 35 I'm buying a sailboat. She's agreed with me on it finally so I have 4 years max. I've been searching Floridas Craigslist. Have any other boating hotspots I should be looking?

    • @MattTucker
      @MattTucker  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@reds1325 Good on you for making a plan mate. I'm not massively familiar with the US market but I know you can pick up great bargains over there. I think the Med is also a good place to look and I know a guy who is about to fly out from Australia to Seattle to pick up a great little boat for a very reasonable price. I'd just look anywhere that is convenient for you to get to and have the opportunity to learn to sail it before having to go on a long trip to get it home or to a cruising ground.

    Really enjoying this, love your easy going attitude.
    I can see one lesson to be learned....keep the hatch shut! If it was me I would have a fully watertight main hatch, leading to a lobby that can take a bit of dampness, separate from the dry area. Once seawater wets something it never really dries properly.
    Surprised you don’t lead reefing lines back to the cockpit.
    But hey, you went out and did it, so please don’t take this as criticism

    • @MattTucker
      @MattTucker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      None criticism taken thanks Mark, all good ideas. We were severely limited on resources including time, space and money so had to make do!
      The hatch was waterproof (mostly) it just happened that Ben was transiting through it when we got knocked down.
      Yep it took a good 4-5 weeks to get dry after that!

    Was the cake a tribute to the movie Master and Commander? I remember the Galapagos Islands pudding dessert that the cook had made for the officers. Also, might I enquire as to the displacement/weight and draft of your boat?

    • @MattTucker
      @MattTucker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can’t remember that scene Martin but I’ll have to check it out again. I remember it being quite a good movie.
      She is a Roberts 34 so the official design says 1.68m draft and 5500kg displacement. I think we were up around 9000kg for the trip with all the food and gear onboard though!

      @Verradonairun 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MattTucker Thanks for the information, Matt. That's quite a heavy cargo, but I suppose the Antarctic isn't a place where you want to be short on anything, and most things do add up pretty fast. Anyways, thanks for sharing a bit of your adventure with us. I thoroughly enjoyed the video!

    • @MattTucker
      @MattTucker  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most welcome Martin. Yeah we had enough food to eat (uncomfortably) for a year but in case we got stuck in the ice as well as probably half a tonne of anchors and ropes for tying up in such a windy place. Ben is the master of preparing for anything!

      Yeah I’m only just stating to realise how adventurous my mum is (she never seemed it growing up, always stressed!) My wife is also not the most adventurous though she tries. I did manage to convince her to move onto a bus with me though which was a win. It is a much larger, fancier bus than I would have gone for on my own though!

    Olá, what the material this sailboat, steel or aluminum... ? the best 42ft or 34 ft sailboat for Antartica?

    • @MattTucker
      @MattTucker  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Gday Henrique, the boat is 3-4mm steel, heavy and slow but pretty solid! Not sure what the best boat would be but something steel or aluminium would help with ice and very solidly built to get through the southern ocean. Might be a good question for my brother Ben th-cam.com/channels/Ez77qmucqufDV6O6Wigodg.html.
      I’m sure he could talk for hours about that topic!
