      That's because they use models and then they add in some CGI for the energy weapons and fire damage. Models are real things, so they will always look more real than CGI, its why in the new star wars movies they went back to using practical effects and using models for the ships.

    • @MaartensTravels
      @MaartensTravels 4 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      @@Jake-cm9jj Actually, all the ships in this space battle are CGI (models). There are no practical effects. It explains why ships (Galaxy class, Excelsior class) look different than what we were used to. They started using CGI first for the 6x06 episode Sacrifice of Angels as motion control shooting models was not feasible. Motion control required shooting each ship (each type) individually and since there are a huge variety of ships types, it would have required too much time. CGI was the cheaper alternative. My sources: memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/CGI and memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Sacrifice_of_Angels_(episode).

      It seems to be what they were designed for - the Miranda class at 01:19 soaked up (as best I could count) twelve direct hits, compared to the (I believe) Excelsior class which could only handle ONE or the Akira (which should be so much more powerful it's almost laughable) which managed to tank six. The Galaxy class near the start didn't seem to be doing half as well either, but it's probably not fair to count it since you don't see it get obliterated, just damaged.

    This is what made the show silly up to this point. Starships just blow up at the slightest weapons fire. And they all fly right into the range of the weapon platforms. The Akira & Miranda shown blowing up even went so far as fly right into a swarm of them. It would've made more sense for the capital ships to fire at the platforms from a distance and use fighters and other support craft for short range attack. Sisko actually used that tactic in Sacrifice of Angels. Babylon 5 did the whole "destroy the weapon platforms" much better in the Endgame episode.

    LOL, what kind of shields was the defiant using and why are they not on like practically every ship in the fed fleet. I mean the galaxy class dreadnought had way stronger shields yet had hull breaches left right and centre when those platforms started firing yet the defiant got smacked around a few times by the same platforms and not a single scratch on the outside 0.0. Star trek logic got to love, (does the ship have the name enterprise, voyager or defiant. ummm no right then blow it up)

    • @Onyx_Imperium
      @Onyx_Imperium 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Phillip Hennigan Well there are a lot of different reasons for why the Defiant's toughness makes sense in a strictly battle situation.
      The first is power. The defiant is originally described as a ship that is "over gunned and overpowered for a ship of its size". What that means is that, while a Galaxy Class and the Defiant may be getting similar levels of power from their reactors, the Defiant has a lot more freedom of how to use that power (for shields, weaponry, etc..).
      That transitions into the second, which is size. A galaxy class is a lot bigger then the Defiant, which means that the power they divert to shielding to protect the ship has to be spread out over a much larger area, along with many more ship systems that need to be powered compared to the Defiant (And especially considering a Galaxy Class isn't designed strictly for war to begin with, while the Defiant is).
      The third is armor. While the Defiant is equipped with ablative armor, which means it doesn't even need shields to be combat effective (unlike most ships in the Star Trek universe), a Galaxy Class has no such armor advantage, resulting in easier hull breaches like the ones shown here.

    • @TheCormTube

      +TheCormTube hi there, sorry if i've caused confusion here, its just that most star trek games that i play now a days do actually class the galaxy as an actual dreadnought vessel, not a cruiser.

      +TheCormTube - The Galaxy Class underwent war refits prior to the Dominion War, including additional armor (some of it ablative) and possibly additional phaser arrays. Heavy Cruiser seems to fit them pretty well, since canon Trek does not make use of the term "Dreadnought".

    You could read a lot into this scene; Cardassian static defenses are so obscenely powerful that they can carve Akira, excelsior, galaxy class ships... Even D'Deridexes get carved to shreds by these things. Compare that with Next Generation where numerous Cardassian ships get iced by a Phoenix Class exploration vessel.

    Fighting stationary weapon platforms makes no sense in star trek when photon/quantum torpedoes have warp drives built so they can be fired at warp. That means their range is system to system...sure that isn't very useful when firing on an enemy ship, because Impulse speeds are percent of the speed of light, so they are maneuvering so fast there is literally no chance to hit them unless you are in close, but for a stationary target you can just fire torpedoes from outside the weapon platform's range and let them land on the unmoving objects.
    Though there are sooooo many poor uses of their technology they do in ST. Like they have had cloaking you could fire from since ST5, and yet we just dont see it again until Nemesis. They can extend their warp fields around planets and move them, so they could easily do the same with asteroids and shoot them at the enemy. That weapon platform power asteroid could be taken out by sending a warp speed asteroid at it. Also warp weapons are clearly viable, because during best of both worlds Ryker was preparing to destroy the Borg cube by taking the Enterprise through it at warp, yes killing them all but saving earth...so why hasn't that maneuver been used more with automated ships? How do you even prepare to dodge an attack that is coming at you at 2000c? In truth half the tech they present in ST would create a form of warfare so terrible there would be no more planets left to inhabit, only living on a ship that can maneuver at impulse and warp speeds would allow you to even have a chance at survival in such a terrible war. DS9 itself would be easily destroyed being stationary, in fact the founders tried to blow up the Bajoran sun to wipe it out once before...but when that is foiled they don't try again, but if a shuttle with a protomatter bomb can supernova a star, then there would be no more stars in the ST universe, just dead space and the survivors of such terrible wars fighting over the scraps of the old civilizations!
    I guess its a good think people in the future are only creative with making new tech, and not how to use it.

Also, fly in as one huge wave so their suicide attacks have a better chance to succeed, and try not to fire on ones that are about to get through. This is the 24th century, so the least we can do is fight like they did in the in the 17th."

Second this isn't COD. Third the platforms have regenerative deflector shielding. Once they are online you won't be able to damage them which was the whole point of rushing in to destroy them and the generator base before it became operational.
