I just bought a XSE Hybrid for my 21 year old son. I looked at cars for him for MONTHS. We checked out Kia, Honda, Mazda, and Subaru. I think the RAV4 is a much better choice than the competition for several reasons. Toyota has a ton of safety features on their cars even on their lowest trim models. Most of the CRVs we looked at did NOT have Blind Spot monitoring (the dealers said the chip shortage). That to me was a big no-no for a younger driver. The RAV also has a great back-up camera and that Lane Keep Assist will beep if you move out of your lane. You can't beat the MPG on the Hybrid -- he is averaging 42 city. The car is peppy and quiet and doesn't even feel like a 4 cylinder. There are also a bunch of USB ports all over the car-- Honda is lacking with those. His opinion was that the RAV 4 was sportier looking -- the CRV gives mom vibes. The CRV is a great car, but I think Toyota wins this.

Good review. A difference that you didn't mention, a very important one, is reliability. The Toyota hybrids are reaching 300k miles, they are so reliable. In fact, when I bought my 2023 Rav4 hybrid, my dealer threw in a lifetime powertrain warranty. You won't find this level of reliability in a Honda.

    • @officialyasir
      @officialyasir ปีที่แล้ว +22

lifetime powertrain warranty doesn't mean it's reliable. Dodge dealers used to offer those often. They have lots of restrictions, you have to get all your maintenance done at the dealer, they will rip you off on the maintenance which will more than make up any future repairs needed, if any...

@@pelicanhill3251i drive hybrid one, comparing it here (EU) to the nearest competitors like Ford Kuga (i think US Escape) Hybrid or CR-V it is definitely noisier but for me it's just enough. You can cruise at 140km/h and comfortably talk with passengers or listen to the radio.
I have a theory that people (but mostly car journalists) say it's noisy because when you are driving economically engine is mostly turned off or is on like 1,5k rpm so it's quiet but everyone when testing a car needs to do one full power pull and then the engine really kicks in and people start to complain about either noise canceling or CVT gearbox. But when driving normally you can barely hear the engine, I have mostly 60-70% ev driving %.

I've been split between those as well 😆 I started considering the RAV4 Prime potentially, but it's such a big price jump for something I'll likely rarely use, or don't want to stress out finding where I'll charge it between places, even though it can just run as a normal hybrid, but then why not just stick with the hybrid and save 25%/10k on the price. Pushing the 40-50k price range starts to feel like you're starting to enter the some luxury-end vehicle price ranges. I want the RAV4 to feel like a luxury vehicle, but there's a few things I imagine keep it from that -- I've heard the road noise isn't great and the engine noise can be loud as well, and now hearing about the sub is a bit odd as well -- you pay for the high end speaker system but it sounds like they don't add any dampening 🤔

@@CTSSTC I'm in the same boat, currently driving a gas hog WRX STI. I spend $120 in gas a week so the monthly payment going up even a couple hundred bucks is worth it to me. Plus with the Prime there's a $7,500 tax credit when you buy new. I came from owning a Tesla and loved just being able to plug in, drive to work, and come back home for a $60 electric bill increase. Unfortunately with MN winters and distances across the state I cannot do that without adding a couple hours of time in-between. In my eyes the Prime is worth it if you're commuting to work and it's less then 40 miles a day. Plus the heads up display is well worth the money, $3,000 for distracted free driving right on the windshield. If you're going to buy new with the Rav4 get the Prime with the tax credit (Technically its $43,000 at that point). I say go for it if you're going to hold onto it. On average you'll see any Toyota with 200k-350k in miles and they hold their value better then most cars.

Main reason (which you didn’t mention here iirc) is that RAV4 Hybrids have a spare tire while the CRV Hybrids provide you with a fix a flat can that would mean you have to replace that tire you just plugged asap. For the same price point of a tech packaged XSE and Sport Touring, you get so much more in a RAV4z. Yes, the “luxuries” in a CRV is better but at that point, get an Acura or a Lexus 🤷🏽‍♂️

I like that the RAV4 is bigger; I can fit 2 sets of golf clubs width wise in the back and not have to put the seats down. I like the storage cover. The gas mileage is WAY better. A few knocks. The front passenger seat is manual. No leather. I find the cabin storage lacking. The center console has one big storage bin instead of a large storage bin and then a smaller one on top like the Jeep. No coin holder (I know, nitpick). Picked up a 2023 hybrid XSE with full option in that exact same silver sky color minus running board a week ago and first thing I did notice was weird door handle positon, took a minute to figure out how to close the door. Smh. This is major issue for me and it is a design flaw. Still can't get used to it. I don't think average kids or seniors can close or control open in tight spot or windy weather without potentially ding other car. I watched ton of Rav4 reviews but you are the only reviewer mention this issue.
My two other cons are crappy JBL premium sound and backup pedestrian alert sound, which I deleted it already. Simply couldn't stand it and didn't want to inform every neighbor whenever I'm leaving. Keep it if you can't safely back up a small SUV.

All my life I wanted a Rav4 Hybrid. This year I finally bought a brand new 2023 and I love the hybrid mileage, the ground clearance and the 4 wheel drive. I was so in love that I totally ignored all the drastic design flaws. The roof is two inches too low. I am 5'10" with a tall torso and I bang my head every time I get in and out and what's even worse is the serious visibility flaws. When I look 30 degrees to the right the rear view mirror is directly in front of my face. If I want to look 30 degrees to the right I have to duck my head down to see underneath the rear view mirror. The center console is three inches too wide on both sides. It digs into my right knee making it painful to my knee cap to keep my foot on the accelerator pedal. I’m thinking about gluing on some padding to ease this problem. My wife also complains about leg discomfort on her side. The side pillars are so wide that I absolutely cannot see oncoming cars at intersections of less than ninety degrees. I feel like this is going to kill me one day. The headrest is so stupidly designed that I sometimes feel like it is forcing my head down.
After four months of constantly banging my head, serious visibility problems, the most uncomfortable seating and the loudest road and wind noise of any car I have ever owned I am now sorry that I ever bought a RAV4 at all. Plus I heard of a new class action law suit because the moon roof drains are short circuiting the air bags which it claims Toyota knew about but failed to fix which the customer must now pay to fix and there is other talk about a power cable corrosion that may cost up to $6K to fix. After four months of living with this car I'm now sorry I ever bought a RAV4.

I just traded in a 2008 Camry Hybrid base model for the 2023 RAV4 Hybrid XLE and so far it feels like a downgrade. They are different types of vehicles, so it could just be my expectations are off, but the RAV4 doesn't feel like a very good value. It seems...cheap, inside and out and the seat cushions and fabric aren't comfortable, doors close and wobble weirdly, the motor sounds like a far away ambulance when slowing down (a little unnerving), the sound system is disappointing, and many more things I am not all that happy with. But, I'll give it some time. The gas mileage has been great (around 45) and it handles similarly to my Camry. I don't mind the road noise people mention; I feel pretty connected to the road. It's helpful having all that cargo space and the seats fold down nicely. Good turning radius.

Great review and appreciate the comparison to CRV. One thing not mentioned is that in Hybrid, the CRV is waaay more expensive. That seems counterintuitive... one main reason people get a hybrid is to save money on fuel costs, but then you have to spend 10 grand more for the CRV?!? Also enjoy the "odds and ends" ... one thing I would mention is the black trim around the wheels. Not sure why higher trims have them as painted metal - I much prefer the black plastic molding on most other trims and vehicles. I think that feature is more about utility (prevention of rust) then about looks.

In fact the front windows are thick, acoustic glass to make it quiet inside. The interior is not Lexus-quality, but I'm OK with that. Everything works well, it's fun to drive, and it gets over 40 mpg. I highly recommend the Rav4 to anyone in the market for a great SUV.

I wish all these car manufacturers would dump the 60/40 split in the second row seats, and make them all 40/20/40 like with the Audi Q8 and Porches. That middle fold down is incredibly useful, and allows 4 full seats, 2 front, 2 second row, when you have to put the middle part of the second row down, while whenever you have to put part of the second row down in a 60/40 split, you get 3 and a fraction adult seats. Dump the 60/40 guys, and go the 40/20/40.

How loud is it on the freeway at cruising speed (not passing), maybe around 70 mph? Is the CRV quieter? Also, I'm sad that Toyota couldn't give this refresh TSS 3.0. Do you know why? Is it missing some sensors by chance? What can TSS 3.0 do that TSS 2.5 (+?) can not do? Finally - can any part of the 2023 RAV4 be updated over the air? What about CRV?

Great review. I’m in the market for a compact SUV and one of these makes a lot of sense for a number of reasons. While I am what I would consider an enthusiast my wife is not. She wants something that she can just jump in and go. She isn’t going to be extra careful with her vehicle and that is why I wouldn’t consider one of the more luxurious options yet she deserves something nice so I think this fits the bill nicely. While this isn’t exciting to some, we are coming from an older commuter so I think we would love and be impressed with one of these. Lastly we also pull a personal watercraft and I think the capability with the RAV4 is just enough. My only issue is how popular these are and it kills me to have to pay over MSRP. Hopefully we will see that change soon

Some negatives about the Limited (trims that have the larger infotainment):
    - The infotainment system itself is just... bad. A screen that size should be able to do split display of functions. It doesn't. Why would anyone want to see the entire screen filled with Energy Flow??? We should be able to see Nav, Music track, Energy flow, and messages split like you get on the lower trims. Plus, if you have Android Auto connected, it makes navigating through menus a NIGHTMARE! Many people are complaining about this. Not to mention the AA auto connection is very iffy.
    - Pretty much no light in the tail gate. Just one tiny side light that isn't functional at all. It takes someone putting in aftermarket light sets to make anything visible.
    - JBL sound system. It's not just bad. It's atrocious!! They put in these really small and cheap dash speakers that make anything that's not a podcast sound flat and overly loud without any lows. Those speakers must be replaced IMMEDIATELY with low sensitivity speakers so that lows pass through to other speakers and the sound is 90% better. Even just taking out those dash speakers alone and leaving nothing there is a vast improvement!!!
    - No bucket seat on earth is good for the human body. This Gen of RAV4 is no different. It's a must for any grown adult to find a seat wedge that works to get your legs and torso as close to 90 degrees or wider or else you'll develop sciatica if you already haven't. And if you have it, it will be so much worse.
    - The button row where the heated steering wheel/odometer/view functions are... they can't be seen unless you take your eyes off the road and lean down to look. Not safe, but I put some sticker bumps on 3 of them so I can find them by touch.
    - Lastly, and this is reeeeally just stupid. Why on earth don't the RAV4's have pockets on the back of the driver's seat?!?!
You said that the roof racks can be adjusted to a preferred position but that's not true. You can take them off or leave them on but only in their set positions. That's neither a plus nor minus but I took mine off because I didn't like the moon roof overhead being blocked.
I'm not thrilled by the cargo space but it's okay. I have NO clue why they don't have latches so you can place the cargo net upright near the tailgate!
I like the way the back lights look. The ones on the CR-V are overkill IMO. Another plus the higher trims of RAV4 have over the highest trim of CR-V is that you can touch open and touch lock all four doors no the former, but not the latter. Another difference is that many of us still like to mount a phone (but not on the dam windshield) since AA/ACP don't do everything. In the RAV4, you can vent mount (if you find the right one). There's nowhere to mount anything on the CR-V thanks to that unappealing honeycomb grid for vents.
You left out one of the best features: The memory seat! I love it. I use the 2nd button when I get out of the car so I won't ever bump the steering wheel when I get out or in. Once in, I tap 1 and it takes me right to driving position. HOWEVER, there is one minor fault! If you turn off the car power after you park, the memory seat buttons won't work until you either open the door or tap the power button. That's a little annoying.
MPG on the RAV4 is MUCH MUCH better than the CR-V Touring. Even though the CR-V Touring costs less, it's bang for the bug is much less.

I just received my 2023 Rav4 Hybrid Woodlands Edition in Calvary Blue. After two weeks of use, I'm 50/50 on my purchase, even thinking about trading it in for something else. I was torn between a Kia Portage Hybrid and the Rav4 Hybrid, both tough to get. You have to reserve incoming vehicles to get a chance at any of these cars. The Rav4 became available first so I went with it. I traded-in a 2020 Subaru Crosstrek for the Rav4, which was a great car with the exception of gas mileage. Needed to get a little bigger car due to back surgery and wanted to take advantage of the hybrid technology and high trade-in value for my Subaru. I research purchases to death and relied a lot on reviews like this one, as well as Consumer Report reviews. I didn't get a chance to conduct much of a Rav4 test drive as these are non-existence on dealer lots in my area. The two main negatives for me are the ride and noise, which were identified as cons on many reviews; I just didn't think it would be as bad as it is. The ride to me is a 2 out of 5, and I'm being generous. You feel EVERY bump in the road and the response is super stiff and somewhat jarring. Plus, the bump reaction noise is what is loud, not so much wind noise that is noted in some reviews. The Kia Sportage is a much better ride. The initial gas mileage average is around 35-37. I would expect you would get at or near the listed 38 MPG on an extended highway trip. So the estimated EPA mileage is fairly accurate. The speakers are literally garbage and I have replaced them with moderately upgraded speakers, which are much better. I don't know why vehicles cost so much, because they are all junk plastic parts that snap together. I found that out changing the speakers. If you have the money, without question, opt for the Highlander. The ride difference is night and day, but you're looking at perhaps a $ 10K additional cost. If you don't have the extra cash and ride/comfort is your primary feature, you are way better off with the Kia Sportage or Honda CR-V.

    • @jimmypena2442
      @jimmypena2442 ปีที่แล้ว

I don’t have those issues with my 22’ SE. only had to replace speakers but then that that solved my issues. Ride is soft and I’ve had an Ls400. MPGs my wife drives a lot normally and she gets 40 average and I’ve done about same driving like a grandma. Build quality to my is impressive with no noises, I’ve only spotted one spot where the gap didn’t align perfectly but that was by the corner of the door so I cant really see it normally. Also worth mentioning mine is made in the US so maybe the ones here are 50/50. End of the day, for 40ish thousand dollars, theres great competition with better interiors but I like my utilitarian car that gets great mileage and is quick when needed. We plan on keeping it long term.

I'm not a huge fan of these seats. The bottom cushion is noticeably thinner/lumpier than other cars I've driven and owned, so I'm going to buy an extra cushion. I also like road trips and want to make sure I'm comfortable!

The worst thing about the Car is the Carplay head unit. It’s great for phone sound, but the interface between using the traditional radio is a nightmare. It requires using the paddle wheel on the steering wheel and the center of the drivers display console. That’s the only way I have found to get to the radio. Even though it says radio on the CarPlay that is either IHeart, or Sirius XM. If you have it you could be using Tune In. There are only two apps for weather and one has a weather map but charges you for it. (Hello AccuWeather and Weather Channel). The door entry is smaller than a Subaru Forester and big people have to fold their neck to get in. I get 38-42 mpg in ECO mode. The daytime running lights are awesome. It’s almost like you have low, med, and high beams. The key should just be a push button. I own the 2023 RAV4 Hybrid LE.

I just bought the SE in black. Overall like the look but the back bumper is odd. They all have the gray color bumper. Bit of an eyesore. But just being picky. I may get it wrapped to match the black paint.

@@sharkhark I’m in Europe. Toyota RAV4 hybrid style AWD: 50,000 euros. Volvo XC60 mild hybrid AWD 48,900. So the Volvo is actually cheaper, but it is a mild hybrid, not a proper one. Still that price is with a diesel engine, will be cheaper with petrol! The Volvo recharge model is more expensive at around 60k, but it’s a plug-in which will do up to 70kms on battery alone.

the interior is very dated now compared to other competitors. Toyotas notoriously have a tin can sound to them when you close a door too .

Does it come with a spare tire? If it doesn't, is there a space to put one? I drive about 100 miles roundtrip to work, and would not get a car/suv without a spare. Currently I drive a 2017 Accord Hybrid, which did not come with a spare, I took the Styrofoam insert and put in a spare to the surface is flat.

Did you notice a difference in the brake feel between the 2 cars? The Rav4 transitions in a weird way from regen braking to normal brake pads. And you feel it every single time the car comes to a stop.

I think all Toyota Hybrids do this. It took me some getting used to with my first one from 2008. the RAV4 does it too. The hydraulics engage very late and hard, then there's a sort of moment where you feel like it releases and you coast forward slightly. It was pretty disconcerting at first.
