    Glass containers work much better. They provide much better acoustic coupling. Plastic containers tend to absorb the sound waves, attenuating the cleaning effect.

      Yeah I've seen they are supposed to work well in other videos. I don't have any big enough for brake calipers tho! Thanks for the info 🙂👍

    what a treat at 19:14. your reaction to your impromptu pull test was genuine surprise and a true insight moment--"get some decent bags." very authentic and made it worth the entire video!

      Thanks! :) For a moment I actually thought they were supposed to do that as it ripped so easily and cleanly! If you like that your going to love seeing me burn my hand in the chain steering wheel build vid in a week or 2! LOL

    I used some waterbased degreaser to degrease my gearbox which was covered in CV grease from a split boot. It works well. I used it neat and hosed down whilst I was scrubbing. It was only about £9 for 5L from screwfix, ‘no nonsense heavy duty degreaser’. My favourite is brake cleaner in a pumper spray bottle. Cuts through everything.

    Thanks for doing the test! I just have small carbs for garden equipment. A new carb seems to have a blockage cos the engine is surging. Took it off once to spray but no improvement so am going to bath it in zip bag with petrol. Obviously just a small quantity of petrol. Can't find a glass container big enough to hold the carb yet small enough to go in the bath.
    Thanks again.

    White spirit/denatured alcohol will dissolve carburettor varnish. Petrol will not. I have some preposterously varnished cbr900rr carbs and will ultrasonic them in white spirit. I intend filming it...

      Really that's interestibg ill have to give that a try. Petrol is too dangerous IMHO anyways lol. I heard about a combo of tranny oil and something else I forget, supposed to strip any carbon etc easily. I'll have to find out and give that a try. Thanks for the tip 😊👍

      Yeah I think your right. I've been using detergent and dishwasher tablets and both seem to work well. Only thing left to try is something like Gunk. Buy I can't justify the cost till I have something serious to clean. For carbs I now have proooer carb cleaning juice. Was mucho dollar tho! Thanks 😁👍

    I wonder if a follow up ultrasonic treatment using vinegar would've helped out with the rust.

    • @PeoplesCar
      @PeoplesCar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi and tx for the input. I opted not to use any acids on the calipers as didn't want to damage the machined surface in the piston bores. However I have tried Citric acid and also with the ultrasonic cleaner in these 2 vids.
      th-cam.com/video/ScuJw4tfqp8/w-d-xo.html
      th-cam.com/video/PWyXlKuCOkk/w-d-xo.html
      To be honest. I found acid works well just with a bit of patience and a cleaner is unnecessary if it's just rust removal looking for. :)

      @@PeoplesCar I hadn't considered that. As a mechanical engineer I would like to think that I would catch stuff like that.

    • @PeoplesCar
      @PeoplesCar  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kslats916 ......now I'm thinking about it I assume it's the rubber seal that actually does the sealing rather then the bore/piston? But I don't actually know. Lol

    • @kslats916
      @kslats916 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PeoplesCar I'm not familiar with that design but I would bet the outer rubber seal is just for superficial water and dust. The seal between the bore and piston is for sure water tight...provided it's working properly.
      I bet you could install the seal between the bore and piston and barely insert the piston into the housing enough to protect the critical surfaces while cleaning with vinegar. Of coarse the bleeder would need to be installed to keep water out of that side.

    Is it not the vibration of the ultra sound wearing it's way through the plastic?

    • @PeoplesCar
      @PeoplesCar  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nah I just think the bags were duff. When that bag pulled apart in my hands I actually thought for a few seconds there might be a tear perforation line as it went so easy, but then new bags did the same too. There are quite a few people suggesting glass and tupperwear works fine, tho I haven't tested that yet.

      @@PeoplesCar Thanks for your reply, I saw this video, th-cam.com/video/QRuRhVC0E2c/w-d-xo.html the Guy uses plastic bags, but he's not running it for an hour! I think the problem is the time, so for something like calipers, a plastic box, but for things that are not as dirty as your calipers, plastic bags are still worth considering! I don't know whether you've seen the Al foil test for ultrasound? It perforates with ultrasound, I thought it put an interesting view on things!! Cheers!
