    As a black gay man, I really didn’t relate to Moonlight, but I appreciate the representation. I didn't grow up in an area like this, so this wasn't my experience. We definitely need more queer representation in film, especially for QPoC. I would love to see a story about a black gay teen growing up in a middle class family.

    One of my favorite moments in the film was “there are black people everywhere”. I found it strange at first that I struggled to relate to this film as a young Black queer man. Then I realized the world this film opens up to the limitless stories that Black queer people experiences and all of the intersections we navigate along the way. Masterclass piece of art and incredibly thought provoking. Thanks for reacting to it.

    I can only relate to this film by being a black queer man. I grew up in a military family, luckily my family is very open. I never actually came out the closet but I was never in it in the first place. I was always told to be myself no matter who that is. I do know it is extremely difficult in the black and queer community to be present just as you are. I'm thankful that in my family I didn't have to deal with any rejection. That all being said you two did great speaking on this film.

    Moonlight is very similar to Brokeback Mountain. I don't really relate to either film. I also find it interesting that these types of stories are the ones that win awards. I do appreciate that Moonlight has a black director and black writers. I just want the black "Love, Simon" or the black "Shelter."

    This is a beautiful film that has a very specificity where it takes place in Miami in the 90s, but it showcases the toxic dynamics of masculinity which are nearly universal, vaguely speaking. I grew up with siblings who fell pray to drugs. We lived in an area where there were shootings and drug dealing/activity. Living on the US/Mexico border in a predominantly Mexican/Catholic community, there’s another layer of oppression. There’s expectations where a man has to provide, be strong, and find a girl, one day marry and have children. As a gay Latino, it was a difficult environment to thrive as an out gay person. Getting mixed and contradictory messages from my parents and others, I can feel, to a certain level, what Chiron feels, but unlike him, I didn’t have a paternal figure to support or talk to. Instead, once my mother found out about my sexuality, her response was that I pray it away. In toxic environments and communities, you learn to hate yourself and bury your feelings. It takes a long time for many to sift and process it all, but for some, they don’t deal with these realities because of a variety of reasons from accepting family/community/region to even skin color. I’m glad this film took home the big prize at the Academy Awards, and feel that it is such an important film because it highlights an experience that seldom gets recognition, let alone on that level. We need to hear more diverse voices telling their experiences with similar caliber and care.

    As a 21 year old, Indian man, in closet been a long time now. I don't even know a gay bird around me and hadn't had any source of such lively knowledgeable environment to learn about me. I have been back and forth about me accepting and rejecting my self quite a long now and have promised not to inflict any more pain on myself. I really appreciate and am hugely thankful to you guys for talking about lgbt topics in so detailed andin fun manner. 🌟

      This is a super late reply. But im queer too (pansexual to be specific) and also indian. I grew up in a very homophobic environment back in my highschool days, but after taking up literature as my college course, ive encountered more people like us, so i don't feel that alone anymore. Mom wasn't accepting of me, couldn't tell dad because he would k*ll me or throw me out. But i am blessed to have some close friends who are super accepting of me. Because of my college major i was also introduced to many nice and open minded adults (teachers and activists). I just want you to know that you are not alone. Im not completely out of the closest, but some of the people around me know about my sexuality and they are kind to me. I hope and pray that you will also find people like that. Trust me, there are many secretly gay people around you, they are jusy scared to come out. Which is sad.

    You guys did so well articulating the struggles of being queer and black. The two identity intertwining in this movie is reality and done so incredibly. We know the struggles and to see it in a movie, told in a beautiful yet honest manner was groundbreaking for many black queer people. And just like "white" allies in the fight against racism is so important, allies in "white gay" community is even more. Since yes we share queerness and that is familiar although our oppression is vastly different, if that makes sense. (my long winded comment lol... all in all werk!)

    Its not an exact experience but my god, a big part of me wishes a younger me back in my teens would have gotten a glimpse of this. Having experience of bullying, a broken home, growing up in the hood, having role models who did similar dirty work, hating myself for being who I am while also falling in love was just so intense and honestly almost unbearable more often than not. But thru it I survived. I just saw this movie late at night christmas morning 3 am and couldnt stop. Im so happy to finally becoming an adult and being in a healthy relationship but man I cant lie this hit me deeply like a dagger and brought back things I havent felt in a very long time.

    Not that affectionate? Really? Implicit bias much? I'm a black gay man and I see that scene as very affectionate.

    • @schmuck.on.wheels
      @schmuck.on.wheels 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      To me, that scene doesn't read as lacking affection in the sense that it's cold or anything, but I do think the awkwardness and tenseness (of I guess acting on something he's been trying to hide/deny for a while) overshadows the tenderness of the scene a bit. In like a realistic way, not a bad way. Idk that's just how the scene came off to me, especially compared to when they're in a similar pose at the end, which felt more comfortable and purely affectionate.

    Thank you so much for reviewing this film, you both did such a fantastic job of reviewing a very difficult movie where I know we can’t all relate. Absolutely smashed the nail on the head, as you said the movie is about showing how each and everyone one of us is unique interwoven web of race, class, gender, and family. So it’s especially important we show more representation and see there are so many backstories and diversity to our beautiful community so we can be more empathetic to each other. Great job. 🥰❤️🥰

    What strikes me is that Black is just trying to be OK for most of the film and it’s only at the end where he can start to be vulnerable and the person he always was from a young age. It’s open to question as to whether he does progress in that way: he would probably have to undo a lot of the hardness he has put on in order to be “OK”. What does Kevin want? It’s just the beginning for them.

    I'm really anxious to see how you guys/gays react to older movies with gay subtext like "Midnight Cowboy," "Midnight Express," "The Crying Game" and others. Speaking of which, what are the problems with being gay in England vs. the US, do you think? Because I'm in the second gayest city in the US, and I still don't feel totally safe.

    • @generichuman2044
      @generichuman2044 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my opinion the UK and the US are similar for gay people. It really depends on where you live and what your family and friends are like. A documentary that ties in well with this video and conversation is called gay and under attack. It's by Reggie Yates and I highly recommend it.
      The biggest thing for me has always been being myself on a night out on the town. I sometimes go out with a bit of eye makeup on or painted nails and I often get some very strange looks and have had a few awful comments and conversations. Thankfully my family and friends have all been very supportive.

    Not sure if you guys will see this but would really love for you to to react to Disney's brand new animation "Luca". Ever since the trailer has released the queer community have been gagging on how heavily Queer coded it is, and how Disney is too cowardly to make an animation with 2 openly gay main characters.
    Hopefully want to know your opinions on it x 🌈❤🌈

    I had a pretty rough time in school. But I'm a straight guy. I won't say straight guys can't have problems but I can't even begin to imagine what it's like to be gay in an environment where it's greeted with hostility almost 100 percent of the time. Movies like this really help me (and hopefully others) understand the horrible shit some people have to deal with on a daily basis for just existing.
