    I know this video is old, but gods that first one is ROUGH in context of the modern "LGBTQ=groomer" rhetoric that is bringing this perspective back into the mainstream, particularly in the US

    The men in the Campbell's soup ad are a real-life married couple, actors Larry Sullivan and David Monahan, and the boy is their actual son.

    I was a child and teen dearing those days. One of the reasons it took me 50 + years to except my sexuality.

    The Coca-Cola advert is the only one I've seen on the TV here in Portugal. For a "Catholic" country everyone is amazingly acceptable and friendly.
    After 2 years here, my barber asked if I knew what the locals called us. "No", I said, fearing the worst. "The Men in Shirts" was his reply, "because you wear such wonderful coloured and patterned shirts".
    Also one of the checkout women in the supermarket told us that she wished her husband was gay. "He never uses cologne. You two do and you always smell so nice!"

      I was in Braga in september, i been told its the most Catholic town in Europe. I saw ad posters for the Braga pride parade plastered to church walls! they weren't even vandalised! it blew my Hungayrian mind

    "One never knows when the homosexual is about". Yeah, and it's annoying. I never know if the guy in the pub is staring at me in an inviting way or if he's just a bit weird and rude. Gay dating is hard 😂

    I remember seeing that Renault advert in cinemas quite a lot - even last year when cinemas had momentarily opened up during Covid.
    While I think it’s amazing that ads like this are starting to be shown in cinemas across the UK, I now believe they need to be shown more before big movie blockbusters. As a gay man, it’s great to see any good LGBTQ+ representation; however, showing them in the cinemas is one thing: putting them before blockbusters such as The Avengers is another.

    there was a Love is Love ad campaign of coca cola in Hungary a few years back (2018 i think, i was discovering myself around that time). The ads were tame, two men sharing a bottle of coke, or two girls sharing a glass of coke with two straws while looking in each other's eyes. It caused a huge outrage. I remember seeing it in a bus stop near my house. Next morning my dad borrowed my duct tape, asked him why and he said "i just dont want to see *that* every morning". He taped over the first bit of representation i saw

    La! (I kinda like starting with La even though you're done with It's A Sin, is that okay lol) So adverts are weird and I think Josh said it well around 2 minutes in about the effect they have on viewers, and of course they're everywhere these days like social media and streaming sites and not just on TV, so arguably have even more of an impact so definitely important to send the right messages with them, unlike that first one and the Snickers ones oof. I don't want to ramble too much as I always seem to lmao, but thank you for the many giggles! I think "Go get some Heinz soup then" is one of my favourite new phrases aha, looking forward to your next video :3

    I'm a Hispanic gay man and, at least from my perspective, I don't think most of us POCs notice so much the fact that white gay men are featured more. I don't really want to speak for everyone, but I think Hollywood and pretty much every streaming service has taken care of doing the exact opposite, in the sense that if there's a gay character, I can almost guarantee it will be the Asian, Latino, or Black character. The Black lesbian woman has become now more of a token than any other character in television.
    My issue with this is it's taking something positive which is representation, and turning it into tokenism, which is even worse, for me.
    I think in most cases the people that notice that the gay characters are white are white people.
    Once more, this is only my take, and based on what I've seen in my country when we see these sort of conversation, we're like "don't get your brain so twisted in a bunch about the fact that the character is white, we're totally okay with it". For every cis white gay male on television, we already have two half-Hispanic, half-Black, non-binary, bisexual woman on Netflix.
    I just want to focus on the positive, hope it's taken that way. My take is "White people, relax, it's ok for you to be featured, too, other cultures don't want you to disappear off our TVs"
    (Please don't kill me 😅)

      same here😭 im an indian lesbian and i feel the same, i never really notice that it's white gay men until someone (usually another white gay man or white bisexual woman) points it out. i like representation bc it's nice seeing a brown person to project upon😭 but it's not immediately a detrimental thing when white gay men are portrayed in media

    hiya guys, awesome video! As a young lesbian myself i remember tearing up watching that last one for the first time on tv- didn't make me want a renault though. I was wondering if you guys would think about doing a commentary on Queer as Folk? (uk) i recently watched it and would love to hear your opinions- especially on how it has aged? see you soon

    I actually get the Elton John snickers advert. It was implying that he was being a diva, as Elton is well known to be. So that one I don't have an issue with.

  • @generichuman2044
    @generichuman2044 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think the difference between the 2 snickers adverts is that the first one is making fun of the guys being so weird and doing weird things to be manly whilst the second one is purely saying haha stereotypes. There's no substance to the second one. The stereotypes are the joke

    I really liked the first Snickers advert, purely because it's so ridiculous. The second one, for me, perhaps plays off Sir Elton's drama queen / diva rep.: I know lots of people who get very short and lose all sense of perspective when they're hungry.

    I think the one with Elton John is kinda funny but alot of stereotype ofcourse but I can have a laugh with it. The one with snickers and kissing and do something manly pisses me of so much more 😅
    The one from coca cola I love so much because it just the normality of it! :)
    I never saw the one with trans representation in the Netherlands, it's a shame it's very beautiful

  • @amitthehuman
    @amitthehuman 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Actually I think maybe the starbucks ad can undersell how much of a big deal the name and pronouns are to a trans person. Note that I'm just a cis guy with trans friends, but deadnaming is like a super bad thing. I thought that the ad deadnaming him might have been too far until I realized that the character is probably in the closet.

    Have you ever watched Roswell New Mexico 2019 it has some representation in it I would imagine in my at least to me it's it's good in the sense that it shows a lot of different backgrounds blacks whites hispanic. Good balance out storyline in my opinion they could put more people in there in my opinion but I think it's good as it is.... And it's important to note that the original Roswell did not they White Liz and made her white white when she was supposed to be Latina. But there's also lgbtq representation and I am very happy with this show.
    I also love shows like legacies which is part of The vampire diaries and the originals. Cw
    And of course there's also Shadowhunters which was based on the mortal instruments book series. And is supernatural in premise and has a lot of representation as well I will point out if you did read the books you probably didn't get the effect that they have in the show. Things got changed around and a lot less of the you know homophobia and bulshit was not there in the show. In my opinion the show is better than the books.. way better
    Also thank you for the commercials❤❤

    In theory, the egg sharing looks hot, but I just think of the mess and the logistical gymnastics that might go on in my mind to execute that in real life 😆. I think I might have seen the Snickers commercial about the guys who “incidentally” kiss over the candy bar. I think, as a kid, it was funny, but shouldn’t have continued with it’s toxic display of masculinity to compensate their threatened masculinity 🙄. The Elton John one was insulting. It’s like they go gay, but right at the last second, they feel insecure so much that they double back. The last advert was emotional 🥹. Campbell’s was cute. I remember that one. Sucks that there is a narrow view on representation or feeling that one letter in LGBTQ+ will represent them all is ridiculous and ignorant. Maybe you guys can maybe reach out to others to critique on future videos about certain movies to gage their personal perspective even if it’s on zoom. Just a thought 😅.

    .. so few and of those most are poorly done, incl the National Lottery one. Makes my piss boil that soo many Brands jump on trend, for our money, in Pride week/s. A few days of each year we seem to be tolerated by the national press and 'the breeders'.
    I would believe their crap, if they paid for regular all year round 'gay' ads for their product, so in every 5-10pm period on any commercial channel we would see 5 such themed ads - bare in mind, we get a block of 3 minutes of ads, every 20 minutes, every day - you can work out the math - 5 ads a night isnt asking too much - and yeah - we do have cash outside Pride week

    So weird that Snickers ads in the UK are so tox masc. In the US, the ads are more about people being hangry. They are not great commercials, but they are so much less offensive? Maybe? Now I want to rewatch them. In the US, Snickers seems to be all about taming hanger and getting us back to work. Very capitalist. Lol.
