    A Maya modeling tutorial on how to create a basic interior structure for a church or cathedral

      +Mike Hermes it's cool, but how to make a gothic cathedral. you know, these beauties: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/32/Domchor_Prag.jpg/220px-Domchor_Prag.jpg
      I was able to do the Indian version (by accident), but never been able to do the gotgic one :/

    Nice tutorial you clearly know what you doing, my only critique is
    1) you don't have to have the initial cylinders have the subdivision as high of 30 - perhaps 16 would be better, it would lower your poly-count & it would make the rendering go a little faster
    2) you should never overlap geometry unless you really have to

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Andrew,
      Like everyone I am learning every day, but to your comments.
      1. Yes, agreed when modeling in a team workflow or for a game where low poly is needed. But in general it is good practice to try to keep the polycount down, agreed.
      2. Agreed
      Thanks for the feedback,
      Mike

      eminem7973 UV's are used to coordinate placement of 2D external texture files onto you modeled object in Maya. With overlapping UV's you will also have overlapping textures. It can also create problems in other area's when create maps,

      +Mike Hermes having an odd issue with the lights now. Can't figure it out. They suddenly no longer render and they were working beautifully. Any ideas why it might suddenly stop rendering the lights?

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mike Milo Try in your viewport to hit 6 and 7 on your keyboard to toggle light on and off. ( not actually off just in the viewport ) If the light works ok there it should render

    Let's say you have done the entire environment by using your modeling method. How are you going to layout UVs on these objects? How are you going to make textures? Will there be any lighting and rendering issues? Is it alright to just interact each object like that?

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      river zhang Hi there,
      The intention of this tutorial is to explain methods that can be use when modeling architectural objects.
      Depending on what method of materials ( shader vs 2D external textures ) you would need to consider avoiding overlap of vertices ( that's a good practice anyway ) Lighting shouldn't be a problem but rendering and texturing could be.
      So like I said, if I were to model this for a game situation there would be a lot of additional / different steps I would go through to make sure the mesh would respond correctly.
      So again, this is merely a suggested methof of vertex manipulation.
      Mike

      Ryan Mulkin I know it wasn't for me ^^" but from listening to my professors it depends on a lot of factors; including length, LOD (lighting, polygon count, etc.), and finally most importantly how many comps ya got to render farm :p

      +Charles Cortes I'd like to suggest looking into the Redshift rendering engine - you can totally avoid the huge render times if you opt for a GPU rendering engine. There are limitations, of course, but a year from now Nvidia will be releasing decently priced video cards with enough memory to allow you to render your own shorts of pretty decent quality. Look up Redshift, you'd be pleasantly surprised :P

    Nice tutorial! Can I ask something? If you were to turn that on a game asset, would you just combine everything into a single object and make the retopo or separate it like columns, ceiling, etc and then retopo each of them?

    • @MHTutorials3D

      I would make mods or sections, import them into the game engine and combine or duplicate them there

    Looks great, but seems like an immense waste of polys. I like booleening two rectangle splines together, edit poly, shift copy the top face hinge from, edge 180 degrees, 10 segments, bam detailed low poly archway that can be worked into a high poly model, unwarps wonderfully.

My Soundcloud is slightly more professional but there's only metal on it just now. I don't know, I just don't have the will to upload everything and market myself.

    but when i am creating bend reformer and change the curvature, my polygon is not bending but a line appears and the shape of that line changes as i change the curvature. also my polygon pipe flattens and looks like a plane. is there something wrong with my Maya?

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jean Marie Tan Hi Jean Marie, That depends heavily on the use. For a game or an animation you would model this very low poly and create the details via transfer of details via a high poly model or through textures. If it is intended as just a single render you would have a bit more freedom. So Low poly version maybe 10.000 for the entire building, high poly version a few million

    Hi, I was just wondering about something. You see, for a University project i created a Gothic Cathedral but had trouble creating the ceiling:
    puu.sh/f7LKV/132c2912ef.jpg
    As shown in the link. The ceiling boggled my mind so bad haha xD I was wondering if you could give me tips on how to create something like that, as i will recreate my Cathedral (I wasn't pleased with the final outcome of the project) or if you'd do a tutorial covering more Gothic Architecture?

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Hi DweenieeTodd,
      The way I do this is to create sets of multiple cylinders, combine them and then bend them with a bend deformer ( I did a tutorial on this, search for "church" ) Then when the ceiling structure is in place I model planes so they fit in the gaps to close the holes in the ceiling. Hope this helps,
      Mike

    • @DweenieeTodd
      @DweenieeTodd 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Hermes If you could tell me the exact time that it happens in the Church tutorial or even possible send me in the direction of a tutorial that demonstrates clearly how to do it, that would be helpful cause i still can't bloody do this! xD

    • @MHTutorials3D

      ***** 3:07 to 5:10

    • @DweenieeTodd
      @DweenieeTodd 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Hermes I suppose this helps to get the basis of the ceiling started, some areas such as getting the curved area of the ceiling to the window is something i'll have to figure out but thankyou!
      A question i wanted to ask, i'm studying games design and of course want to get to the industry. The environments you make such as the Cathedral and Gladiator arena, are the game ready environments or purely art styled environments? They seem quite high poly to go into games but i could be wrong.

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Hi there,
      These models are certainly NOT suitable for game environments. The poly count is way to high. Normally for a game asset you would get a budget of around 1500 poly count. In order to make this suitable you would have to transfer the detail from a high poly model to a low poly model via maps etc.
      Mike
