    I started this at 4pm and I started rendering at 7:12 pm and I prayed to the pc god for my pc not to crash and after a few minutes it was still going and I started playing eye of the tiger to inspire it to make it through the rendering. It finished at 7:17 and it's the best thing I've ever made in Maya. Thank you for the tutorial Mike.

      Very good tutorial!!!!!
      I don't believe it, you know when you go and do something so unbelievably stupid... I needed to re-install my OS thus I backed up what I thought was all of my data. Yeah well brain's here didn't backup my maya projects, which includes a project I've been working in my spare time for months. Yes I had a lot of spare time lol... Oh well what can you do, will have to start again.

    Hi Mike, absolutely love your tutorials, you're eloquent, and to the point and have a brilliant speaking voice for it! Undoubtedly one of the best and most consistently excellent series' around; so thank you.
    When doing this one, Maya has a problem on some of the gates when using the Boolean > Difference tool. It's done the bottom two fine, but the higher two it doesn't seem to want to play ball at all. I've checked it out online and it seems to be a common problem, but the fixes never seem to accomodate for cutting straight through at either side. Not sure if you've experienced this yourself (as I presume it's exclusive to this year's version of Maya) and know of any ways round it, but any advice would be very much appreciated. Seems like an incredibly useful tool and it's rather frustrating that it doesn't work properly!
    Once again, brilliant work Mike, keep it up!

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rob,
      First of all, thank you very much for your kind words. I really appreciate that and comments like this keep me going.
      As to the Boulean function;
      Unfortunately this is a common Maya problem ( in all versions ) and it is best to avoid the use when possible.
      In this case what you could do is add edges manually using the slit edge tool to create the framework for the door.
      Then drag the vertices into position remove the face and close up the gaps with the fill hole tool.
      Another thing you can try is instead of selecting both objects and hitting Boulean, try to select the face of your wall only and your object and then hit Boulean.
      Regards,
      Mike

    • @RobVicars
      @RobVicars 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Hermes Thanks for getting back so quick Mike! I did pretty much as you said, managed to coerce it into giving me most of the edges for the arch via the malfunctioning Difference tool and then I just added a couple of new ones in the with multi cut, shuffled them about a bit and deleted the faces. Worked perfectly! Look forward to trying some more! Take care.

    Hey Mike. This is really awesome. I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on a car. Doesn't have to be too fancy. Maybe a simple Camry or something. I cant get the hang of the numerous curves in vehicular modeling. Thanks.

      @MHTutorials3D  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Daniel,
      Thank you ! Glad you like it.
      As to your request... I get a lot of requests to model cars but the problem is that modeling a car takes hours and hours. So this would be multiple videos ( 5,6,7 ? )
      I typically want to avoid video series and always try to cover a topic in 1 hour or less.
      I could however model something with the same technique. Do you use plane modeling when modeling a car ?
      Mike

    • @hackerman3350
      @hackerman3350 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The way difference works is it takes the object you selected second and removes it, also removing the part of the first object you selected that was intersecting the second object. He does the first difference a few seconds earlier then presses G to do the difference operation again after selecting his objects. Hope this helps

    16:37 when i try to use the boolean difference option, it does not apply to the upper two column, it only changed the lowest one. I checked if all three were going through the upright ''wall'' but i still got the same problem. How can i fix that?

    • @carlylloyd2469
      @carlylloyd2469 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This got me too! it is because there is a missing face on the bottom side of the arch, if you bridge the gap with the bridge tool it should work perfectly! :)

  • @thebritishpotato2967
    @thebritishpotato2967 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok i really hope you reply, the boolean difference doesent work anywhere, i got by at start just by deleting th faces, however now at 16:42 when i delete face, it makes everything mess up...

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheBritishPotato Hi TBP,
      The Boolean function is notorious for creating problems in Maya. If that doesn't work you can try to detach the face you are doing the boolean on. If that doesn't work, don't use the boulean at all but use edge loops to position the door openings and then delete the inner face
      Good luck
      Mike

    I was wondering. how would I learn different axis for modeling. i noticed using the object and or normal axis I can move a vertices side to side up and down with the u and v axis and not have any dents. but then sometimes. I cant get a vertices in place using that unless I use the world axis but. I do end up having dents anyway. I am trying to find more information on that and figured to also learn curves to get better topology instead of not having vertices properly placed.

  • @mitchellwilliams1493

    Hi Mike, this question is mainly for asking how do you get round the problems of using Boolean? as a VFX student I am following this tutorial with no problems.. however when wanting to finalise the topology with edge loops, it becomes clear on how broken the model really is, for example if you wanted to smooth out anything with the boolean applied, then you will get a complete mess. Making the topology completely unusable. Is there anything you could suggest that would allow me to put an edge loop on the bottom and top of the boolean'd parts of the model.. As a tutorial this is great!! and easy to follow. However if this method was used towards an industry standard portfolio piece, a lot of complications will arise if any thing needed to be smoothed. Does this make sense?
    Any help is gratefully appreciated, great tutorial too :D, oh and I have subscribed :) .

    Could you possible explain how I would UV map this to texture individual sections and export to Unreal engine to test? UV mapping blows my mind and this isn't exactly the simplest thing to do anyway but Id really like to try it.

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michael Foster I would probably apply shaders instead of 2D textures ( and maybe 3D paint them )
      If you did UV them, I would UV one section and then repeat them,
      Mike

      +Nemo Nautilus That can happen, depending on your model. Increse from 180 upwards until the gap is closed

      John, the boulean function Maya is a notorious disaster. It is all about selecting the right object first

    • @johndamn3674
      @johndamn3674 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mike Hermes I did. I'm using maya 2017. I selected pilar then curved part. It just leaves an outline

    • @wanderingranger825
      @wanderingranger825 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure if you solved it or not but I had the same problem and fixed it by filling in the hole on the bottom of the arch. Maya has a stroke sometimes if you try to boolean with unenclosed objects. I guess it's booleaning the faces instead of the whole shape.

    Hey I am having a problem with the difference function, I have done everything exactly as you have done it, however when I have everything set up and execute the command it doesn't function in the same way. It almost etches in the outline of the cylinder to the face of the cube, rather than creating negative space. I think this may be due to the lack of volume, because I have tried using unaltered geometry and the function works as you would expect it to. Can someone please help me gain some insight into what the problem may be?

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tanner Fry Hi Tanner, the Boulean function is notoriously sketchy and is a well known problem in Maya.
      You could try this. Select just the face of the wall ( not the entire object ), then elect the smaller object and try again,
      Mike

    Hello mike, thanks for the tutorial :)
    Just wondering if it is hard to make a realistic texture for this model?
    I was thinking that if I want to make a texture for this, I might have to texture this model before 33:47 , and after that, duplicate the models with textures and combine them all....lol
    Not sure if my idea is correct though....:/

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom Liang The proper process would be to UV the whole thing and then texture it ( with possible additional maps such as normal maps, AO maps etc )

      @tomliang 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello dear Mike Hermes
      Thanks for the replay. >____<
      And I just done the modeling and was trying your method by my understanding... ...
      But if I combined all the duplicated meshes before I map them separately.....
      It sort of became really tedious ...
      You can see that over here..:tinyurl.com/ne7k9ny
      I guess I did something wrong..... :'/
      ...

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom Liang Hi Tom,
      You could probably texture before duplicating but you would have to tweak the textures later to avoid obvious duplication

    • @tomliang
      @tomliang 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Hermes it would be great if you could demonstrate how to texture a monster like this......,:/
      we usually see people do small object texturing tutorial, but seldom see people do a big building texturing like this.....

    I love this tutorial, but when I try to do it I can't get past the bit where you cut out the first opening in the cube with mesh/Boolean. It doesn't cut through for me, I've tried it again and again following step by step about 12 times. It can't be because I am using the 2016 version, right?

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      nanny madden Nanny, the Boulean function in Maya is notorious for creating problems. Try selecting just the face where you want to have your hole into. Sometimes that works

      @nannymadden1256 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Hermes Awesome, Mike. I will give that a try. Since I have you on the 'horn' and this is a beginner's tutorial, can I ask...how do you toggle between views so easily? You jump between top, front, persp view like lightening. I noticed that you have the viewcube in the upper corner (I don't have one on my view in 2016 though it says I should), but I see the menu pop up as well....are you using a menu to do that and if so...how??

    • @MHTutorials3D

      Mike Hermes OK, believe it or not I am trying to trial and error before posting another question...the end of the tutorial is VERY fast, maybe too fast for a beginner. I actually can't see what you are clicking to get to the render settings and in addition the layout seems very different for 2016 version...can you bullet point it?

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      MMACZ88 The Boulean problem is a problem well known in Maya. If it doesn't work wou can model the windows manually by removing faces and tweaking vertices

    • @MMACZ88
      @MMACZ88 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Hermes Thanks for the reply. I had to move to tweaking vertices. The output was awesome btw! Another question, if it is not too much to ask, is there anyway to 'weld' the gap formed from the beginning and endpoint of bend 'curvature'? (35:09) :-)

    • @MHTutorials3D
      @MHTutorials3D  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      MMACZ88 Glad it worked out. The way to merge these is by selecting all the vertices from both ends ( the ones that you want to merge ) and then select Edit Mesh - Merge components

    DOH! I went off your plans but the coliseum is nothing like this...Oh well.
    OK so here's what happened, I saw the thumbnail and went to the end to get a reference and came up with this...
    drive.google.com/open?id=0B4ydB7AtzWawYW1URW1hdFdPSFk
    Basically I created 1 block and Boolean difference the arches and extruded the stairs, made some posts and ncloth then duplicate special.
    8 core system with 16gb ram struggling, maybe all the chrome tabs and photoshop running as well.
    I tried to do a quick animate by pressing play,the ncloth worked when it was single block but nothing moved after duplicating, I am thinking it is just lag.
    Outliner a mess, I wonder if I should apply the ncloth after duplicating? and apply the same node to all instead of duplicating the nodes? would that work?
    My lighting also isn't what I expected. An ambient light shows face shadows but not projected shadows. meaning a black would be shaded in the area away from the light but the block doesn't project a shadow. See screenshot, there is no shadows of the pergolas. Noticed you set up your lighting in render settings and not the attribute editor.
