    Hi! Weather technician here. Typically when we issue warnings for hail we consider anything greater than .25in to be moderate and .50-.75in and up to be severe criteria. So you started with something thats already pretty scary to me!

      It's worth noting that hail does not just fall once.
      Many hail pieces would hit you, so is more dangerous.

      Ballistics gel isn't a decent analogue for skin covered flesh. Skin has much higher tensile strength than muscle or fat. More importantly, I think the ballistics gel used here wasn't particularly dense (presumably for better jiggling).

    • @Isometrix116
      @Isometrix116 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Mostly because ballistics gel is meant for penetrative rather than blunt damage. There are way to make analogous human skin, but they aren’t really worth it for this experiment. Also ballistics gel gets soft quickly in the heat, which changes how it reacts to damage.

The fact that your synthetic hail is being obliterated on contact indicates they're probably hitting with a lot more force than real hail.

    hey lois, the idea of this video was incredible, this damage may vary for differnet age groups, and the hail stons have material thats made of water and a couple of salts, and their shape is not sperical perfectly but a little rugged deformed. i say because they can impart very different forces at the same time. evenb a one inch hailstone can kill you, the gel was tthick, the momentum imparted by the small ones can even cause sever concusions, cause i saw a very real case in front off me, itt can literally rip of that flesh on your head.

The storm was dropping just golf ball size hail in that area but still caused lots of injury. Nothing too serious but still scary. Terminal velocity for objects of a given density increase as they get bigger. I took an orange out the door skydiving once, and it fell almost perfectly relative to me. A grapefruit fell so fast I couldn't tuck up small enough to keep down with it, and also spun up and flew away from me at an angle with magnus lift.
    The danger from hailstones increases faster than their mass does because of the increased speed.

I don't know how we made it home because I just remember the visibility being nearly zero because of the size and amount of hail falling. We decided to run from the car to our house when we are parked out front and my brother got nailed in the head by chunk that was softball sized. Now it could've probably been closer to baseball size but the way I remember it being was gigantic, but I was seven. It gave him a concussion and he ended up having to go to the hospital after the storm had passed.

    Interesting video but at the end of the day in your test which hails would kill? It just kinda seemed a little bit scuffed when it came to final conclusion. You could've found what force to the head would be fatal and at what speed do hail usually fall? Shooting the hail out of a cannon and not mentioning how fast they are going just seems like something you should mention.
    While you tested the hail you could have calculated the acceleration which i thought I saw some reading equipment Infront of the cannon and with that calculate the force of the hail. Keep it up!

    I live in Texas and several years ago we got the worst hail storm I've ever seen. I didn't actually measure it but we had hail fall that's wasn't just bigger then my fist but my entire open hand. These things punched holes through not only our roof but the ceiling underneath it. After the storm was over you could see the sky from inside the house. Only time I've ever had to hide in the bathroom from a storm that wasn't producing tornados.

    ZUZANA - 155 mm Self-propelled Gun Howitzer is a Slovak artillery system with a 45-caliber gun and automatic loader for loading of both projectile and charge. It is an evolution of the 152mm SpGH DANA self-propelled howitzer.The system features long range, high accuracy and rate of fire, prompt preparation for firing and high level of mobility ensured by a modified TATRA 8x8 chassis. Design of the gun enables to use any NATO standard 155mm ammunition available on the market. The Fire Control System enables for a Multiple Round Simultaneous Impact (MRSI) mode. One of the unique features of ZUZANA is that the gun is mounted externally in between two totally separated compartments of the turret. This makes the crew inherently safe from any potentially dangerous mechanics of the gun and autoloader plus the crew is protected from the gases generated during firing.

    Problems:
    -I dont see calculations or experiments for terminal velocity on these hail stones.
    -hail is not solid ice. These have a very different density to actual hail. Thus their terminal velocity may be different aswell. Not to mention their ability to concentrate force or deliver energy into the skull exct.

    • @mrpiggy3
      @mrpiggy3 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jebbryant6522 if you push a piece of paper towards the flour you can push it faster than if you dropped it (it’s terminal velocity)
      So if you fired that ice down a skyscraper wouldn’t the ice slow during free fall, because it started at its terminal velocity
      Therefore without calculations the ice is going beyond its terminal velocity
      Therefore more damage than if it was a normal free fall from clouds

      Well smallest size would have to be in the .5in range. If you are staring right into the sky and a piece of hail has formed into a thin pointed shard and it goes right into the ocular cavity. But the odds would be astronomical of even getting a piece of hail at that size to form such a particular shape and fall right when you are looking uo

    Another fun hail fact (or theory really) is the way hail grows in size. It's assumed it grows when it falls out of the storm and gets caught in the updraft of a storm. So it melts going down, and refreezes going up. Creating concentric growth rings as it adds mass. Its known as multiple trip theory. So the stronger the updraft, the bigger the hail!

  • @TwisterKidMedia
    @TwisterKidMedia 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think there might be a couple problems with this. Your ice density is going to be higher than natural hail due to the fact that you are freezing them solid. Most hail grows sequentially within the updraft and accumulates air between the layers, that's why most hail is cloudy and opaque rather than clear like ice made at home. It also looks like your terminal velocity is a touch too high for smaller stones. I can tell you that most hail less than an inch in diameter will not dent metal unless its wind-driven. Terminal velocity on half-inch or nickle sized hail is around 40-50 mph. You add in horizontal wind components of 60 and 70 mph then you start getting higher velocities. Looks pretty good beyond that for your other tests. Ask any storm chasers and they will tell you 2.5+ inch hail will shatter windows with ease and leave nasty dents. Definitely don't want to be out in it without a helmet. The largest I have personally seen is 3.25 inch. Cool tests! Im a severe weather meteorologist for the US National Weather Service and have been storm chasing for 10 years.

  • @captainjjz7141

    The hailfall we had 2006 in Leipzig, Germany during the soccer word championship, was like 2 - 2,5 inch each and it massively destroyed peoples car windshields and also hit peolpes heads, but no one died. Only some in hospital as far as I know.

  • @colsoncustoms8994

    I’d be willing to bet that building g it up with multiple layers makes it stronger than the whole thing freezing at once. Not to mention, if there’s any kind of dust or whatnot in the air, it’s going to make it almost like pykrete.
