I was excited to play this one being familiar with the franchise, but I quickly discovered it wasn't very fun at all.. only to find many online reviews saying it's the second worst game besides Superman 64! I don't think I agree with that precise statement, but the game sure is bad. This recording was played on hard difficulty, because I was told that it's required to see all stages and final ending. This is a lie, because you can already achieve this by playing on normal difficulty. I wish I knew this before hand because the hard difficulty kinda forces you to play through each stage five times, whereas normal difficulty requires far fewer replays. Anyways, I'll briefly go over the replays. Each stage initially starts off with only about 6 mailboxes. For each consecutive attempt at the stage, you have to deal with more mailboxes. It caps out somewhere in the 20s. Each next stage has a "total mailboxes" requirement, meaning if you played the first and second stage just once, you have 6+6=12 mailboxes. If the next stage requires 18 mailboxes, you need to repeat either of the previous levels to make 6+12=18 for example. Now hopefully with all of that understood. This longplay was originally about 3 hours long and featured each stage 5 times. I've cut all stage replays out and show every stage only once, but make sure to collect all of the bonus coins during this run. I found that some bonus coins are only to be found from enemies that don't show up in the first run, but I might be mistaken. It's also easier to get all bonus coins in a single run in the last replay as the extra deliveries give extra time. All of the bonus levels are also shown in this video obviously. Gold on all but the stunt stages because the controls are terrible and hard difficulty gives you so little time that I doubt it's even possible to do.
I remember being tricked thinking it would be like the game boy version, little did I know it would be my worse pick for the n64. Sure it’ll give you a few laughs like when you smack a character with a newspaper but it’s not that good a game.
One of the very rare instances of stylization having a negative impact on a game’s presentation. The simple, angular art style looks fine for the 2D artwork seen in the menus, but when translated to 3D in the context of the N64’s capabilities it feels flat and underwhelming. The incredibly short draw distance doesn’t help much either, you would think the houses having no texture would afford them more space. Barring the draw distance, perhaps the style could be pulled off with better lighting or with cel-shading paired with outlines to match the artwork?
