  • Can the carnivore diet help relieve joint pain? In this episode I had the pleasure of interviewing Shawn Baker, MD about the Carnivore Diet and joint pain. Shawn Baker is a lifelong multi-sport elite-level athlete and a medical doctor who served as a combat trauma surgeon and chief of orthopedics while deployed to Afghanistan with the United States Air Force. His focus in recent years has been on using nutrition as a tool for health, performance, and overall well-being. Through his Carnivore Training System and private consulting work, he has inspired countless thousands of others to challenge a highly flawed nutritional paradigm and to opt for a carnivorous lifestyle instead.

    I'm 53 and a carpenter/contractor. I've lived with chronic joint pain in both hands, elbows and knees for the last 10 years. There have been long periods where I would routinely start every day with 3-4 ibuprofen and more throughout the day. Since going carnivore 6 months ago, joint pain is completely gone. No medications.

    I am 78 and I have tried all kind of diets, but with limited results . 30 days ago I started the lion diet, and the results are amazing. I had a shoulder joint pain to the point that I could hardly used it. Every day I improve in the use of my arm , and that is amaizing. There are other good results too,my digestion, my skin , I sleep so much better. My cravings for sweets are gone. In general I feel better than ever before. The pain is somewhat slowly disappearing & still there. I finally have enough energy so started walking and bringing on a whole new set of pain 😂 and about to start Pilate reformer classes (6 as an introductory package)
      Other things meaning avacados, oranges (I just got over a viral infection) banananas, cocoa powder only when really wanted, lemons every now and then. turmeric & cinnamon occasionally.
      I do t want to oxylate dump too fast and my hair feels like it has thinned out so don’t want to shock my body too much!
      Eventually I will go strict and then when I can trust my body to start adding foods and see how my body responds.

    Thank you for this video. I found it today, greatly depressed and on the brink of giving up.
    This is my situation:
    I suffer from cPTSD, Neurodermitis, Fibromyalgia, Polyneuropathy, PCOS, lots of allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, and extreme hairloss. I used to be a hair model with strong and heavy hair up to my knees, now I have no hair on the top of my scalp, thin and fine hair on the rest of my scalp, and my hairline went back about an inch.
    I also have a few begnine tumors in my brain from severe head injuries, one of them sits right next to my pituitary gland, and two others sitting on my nervus vagus and my nervus glossopharyngeus, which are being compromised by the begnine tumors as well. I also have empty Sella syndrome. On top of that, a neurologist finally looked into my lab reports more closely last year to find out more about my severe symptoms, which I have had since the assault on September 7th in 2011, and all other doctors declared to be psychological or psychosomatic issues, or a rare kind of migraine. At that point I could hardly walk 50 paces in a row, was tired and totally exhausted day and night, could hardly sleep, had constantly head aches, chronic pain everywhere, and went totally blind several times a day for no reason I knew of. The neurologist diagnosed almost immediately an intracranial hypertension. So I was admitted to the hospital right away for a lumbal puncture to prove it. The diagnose was correct and I went for serial lumbal punctures every 4 to 6 weeks, but denied the off label use of epileptic medication. I wanted a surgery to quit the serial lumbal punctures, which would have to be made more often after about half a year. I did my research online and explained my neurologist that and why I wanted a shunt operation. In Jena, Thuringia, I found a young neurosurgeon from Ukraine, who supported me as well, and so I had my Shunt operation on September 1st in 2023.
    Now at least the symptoms of the IH are gone. I lost 15 kg since my first lumbal puncture without changing anything. Yet I now still weigh 109.9 kg, which is about 220 lbs. I am a short woman with only 165 cm.
    Because there was no weight change since November, I went to see an endocrinologist to check my thyroid, as my mom had suffered from hypothyroidism, later diagnosed as Hashimoto. Sadly this "specialist" only checked on my TSH once, also not on T2, T3, or T4. He also did not do an examination on my Vitamine D level or stress hormones. He said my TSH would be "in the range" and I would have to "just go on living with a little bit of not so tender shape". This made me speechless. I have so many problems with my joints, especially with my left knee since childhood, when I was very sportive and a competitive swimmer and former soccer team member of my school. I can now take long walks or go on some easy hikes even, but I have to recover 1-2 days from such activities. So I really *must* get rid of the weight!
    My knees are in bad shape since my teens. I had several knee surgeries and lots of injections into my knees already as teenager. I have severe chronic pain in all my joints, especially in arms and legs, as well as pain in my back. Lying on my back hurts my back, lying on either side hurts my hips and shoulders, lying on my tummy hurts my neck and head. Sleeping is a very hard quest due to all the pain and also due to my cPTSD. So I hardly slept since about 20 years, during which I mostly only slept about 6 hours per week.
    I live practically sugarless and saltless since almost 40 years. So I never add salt or sugar, but only take in the natural content of sugar and salt. I also didn't drink or eat any "diet" or "light" products with sweeteners for 33 years. I only drink coffee or tea without sugar or milk, and about 2 liters of mineral water per day. I had my last diet coke more than 30 years ago. I did sooo many diets and had the usual yoyo effect of always gaining more than I had lost before. My mom used to lose weight with Weight Watchers, but I always disliked WW, because during her final 20 years, she would eat a greater amount of tablets than she ate food. She only ate 250 calories a day, so she could keep her weight. Of course she got the golden key from WW, but for what price?!?
    I have been eating lots of vegetables and fruits, only "healthy" carbs, and only "healthy" vegetable oils and seed oils. I hardly used butter, just a little ghee for cooking from time to time, only lean meat and lean fish twice a week. Yet I had gained weight, extremely when taking antidepressive medication, and after the initial loss of 15 kg, about 30 lbs, after my first lumbal puncture a year ago, my weight stayed the same since November 22nd in 2023.
    I turned 60 in December. Also I had 6 babies, breastfed for 12.5 years all together. When pregnant, I would always lose weight and feel fantastic, until I stopped breastfeeding.
    I am so done with this diet topic after having fought for so long. When people look at me now, they see an undisciplined woman feeding on sweets and fat and sugar water - which I am NOT!
    So now I am starting the fatty carnivore diet and will happily keep you informed on this topic, if you wish so. 😊
    If this really works, my sons will be sooo happy for me. I know that for sure. 😊
    I subscribed to your channel today and I am looking forward to viewing your other videos. 👌🏻

    About three weeks on keto and my knee pain nearly disappeared. I was shocked. A few weeks more and it was gone. The orthopedist's options were 1) steroid injections (no, please!) 2) injection of gel after a couple more years of pain (can't remember the name) 3) and eventually a knee replacement. I almost just believed him because I'd been very hard on my knees for decades and figured it was just the normal path. I started eating keto for an unrelated reason, not expecting my knee to benefit, so it wasn't a placebo effect of any sort. It just happened and now I'm starting to run again and do deep squats when 8 months ago I couldn't hike or walk 2-3 mph on a treadmill without a lot of pain and then swelling afterwards. Now my choices are eat steak and be active or eat bread and be a sofa toad. Easy choice, no ortho needed. I think orthos are doing us a disservice by not even suggesting that we can relieve pain with diet, in some cases.

    I am turning 60 in June, I have severe osteoarthritis in my hands, especially my prominent right thumb joints, and my left foot. I have been diagnosed in the past year with inflammatory arthritis, I have known about the Sjogren syndrome since 2008, and I now have the super rare dermatomyositis. I also have a lot of calcification in lymph nodes and other parts of my body. After the diagnosis of especially the autoimmune diseases I looked into changing my diet instead of taking the pills the Dr. wants me to take. I found several good videos on the benefits of the Carnivore way of eating and autoimmune diseases, so I started on it about 8 months ago. About 1 year ago when this diagnosis journey began, I was 167# with severe pain in my right thumb that I thought surgery would be the only way to relieve. I have chronic pain issues and calcification Rice granules as well in my right shoulder from a fall almost 20 years ago. So now 8 months in, I am at 137#, the inflammation and pain are significantly better!! And NO SURGERY unless the severe pain returns. I still have physical limitations due to the deformed joints in my hands and foot that I am adapting to or asking for help with. I have a brace that stabilizes my thumb joint that helps with everyday living. Try to start your car without your thumb, do buttons, or put a ponytail in your hair...I can!! Adapt and OVERCOME!! I can't wait to see my lab #s later this month. I feel better than I have in many years!! One thing I had a hard time with was the lifetime of "you must eat 3 meals a day"....to "I don't need to eat till i am hungry, usually once a day now. Another thing I have noticed is that my fat is virtually gone!! I have extra skin as i got over 210# in the 90's after an injury, but the fat is gone!! I suggest to anyone I know with health issues that will listen to my story to look into this way of eating and maybe just try for 30 days, see what happens. You won't be sorry!! ✌❤🤩🙏

    I suffered a knee injury on my bmx bike when I was about 21 that really called for surgery but I kept riding for years after and reinjured numerous times. By the time I was in my early 30s I limped significantly. This was around the time I started looking for long term solutions for my chronic pain and explored new diets. I eliminated sugar and refined carbohydrates and at a lot of meat and protein for the following years and got more exercise. My eating style has evolved to a less carnivorous diet but includes a lot of eggs and whole ingredients. I usually eat once a day and try to stay below a target of 20g or less of net carbs a day. I have a diet that focuses mainly on cooking with whole ingredients, avoiding seed oils, and eating as clean as possible. I experience very little pain anywhere in my body anymore and can effectively roller skate like someone in their 20’s and am in my mid 40s now. I believe a carnivorous diet can help shed off stagnant extra weight full of toxins that can lead to chronic pain but if I do experience aches I can often attribute it to eating something that probably wasn’t too clean. For example I avoid pork even though I enjoy it but pork isn’t really clean meat and I think it makes me feel like hell if I have any. Same with shrimp, crab, bottom feeders, etc. If I am eating things like salmon, tuna, grass fed beef I definitely feel much better. I believe personally all these factors make a difference. If you eat animals that eat 💩 or were poorly raised, it transfers to you and you feel like 💩. Closer to source is the goal for me.

      As your body dumps fluids from inflammation it uses the magnesium and other body salts/ minerals as binders as it releases oxalates etc. Keto Chow daily minerals plus ample amounts of Redmonds is essential as the chemistry of the body normalizes and reorganizes nutrients. Egg yolks also provide essential nutrients. I don't care for beef liver but I sure like chicken livers and pate. I eat Nori with pate. People just can't be metabolically dysfunctional and not also be malnutritioned.

      I did Keto for about a year. I lost weight and reduced some pain. As of August 1st I started the Beef, Butter, Bacon and egg elimination diet. (See Dr Ken Berry on you tube) Within three weeks all my pains were gone and I started getting dizzy. I checked my blood pressure and it was 94 over 62.Within two weeks my doctor weened me off my blood pressure meds that I had been on for 18 years. After 75 day I went to just carnivore and now my glucose falls in the 80's to 100 in the mornings and I am no longer pre-diabetic. My husband says I no longer snore and my acid reflux is gone. I am down 78 lbs since January and at 61 feeling better than I have in the last 20 years. It has changed my life. Hope you have good results. PS: I will not lie, I had three months of loose stools but I blame this on how insulin resistant I was. All that inflammation has to exit somehow. Anyway it finally resolved. Hang in there if you have similar issues.

    I have been on the Carnivore diet for 5 months with noticeable weight loss and body adjustments.
    I primarily consume beef, Butter, Ghee, bacon, eggs, chicken, sour cream, cheese. My starting weight was 328lbs and has moved to 311lbs.
    Many nagging aches and pains have vanished, I breath easier, and my mind is clearing up. I'm still sedentary for the most part but soon will be going for walks. Four years ago, I almost broke my left leg shinbone but tore loose the tendons and cartilage in the left knee and the ankle.
    Over the past few weeks I have been experiencing cramps in my calf muscles and my feet tendons that dissipated but the last two days the ankle & tendons ( left side of Achilles Tendon) on that left foot is being real mean to me forcing me to limp some to avoid pain. Btw, I had some gout issues but a sometime back and a Holistic practitioner advised me to use celery seed and Tart cherry extract capsules and it was gone in under 48 hrs.
    After all this above, any opinions or recommended additions or changes you may have please.

    what about micro nutrients like calcium and magnesium on a carnivore diet?

    • @GnarStark
      @GnarStark ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There are lots of micro nutrients in meat and milk. Milk particularly is abundant in calcium and magnesium. But in general we seem to think of meat as just protein. It’s actually full of most of the vital micronutrients we need like heme iron, zinc, selenium, b12, magnesium and a few others. Organ meats have even more micronutrients, particularly the liver.

    • @GnarStark
      @GnarStark ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Think about when you take a supplement or vitamin. Where do those nutrients go? They’re either stored in organs, tissues, or flowing through your blood. The same is true for animals we eat and when we eat them we get the micronutrients that were in their bodies essentially.
