Shawn Baker Challenges the Norm with his Carnivore Journey

  • An advocate of a diet predominantly focused on meat consumption, Dr. Shawn Baker challenged the preconceived views about nutrition as he talks about his personal journey that led him to adopt a meat-based diet and the unexpected health advantages it provided for both him and his patients undergoing orthopedic surgery. He also discussed its implications for conditions like addiction, diabetes, mental health, and neurological diseases, and how dietary cholesterol has long been demonized when it can actually benefit our health.
We don't just stop at health impacts; we also take a critical look at the broader implications of the carnivore diet. How does meat consumption affect the environment? What is the situation of cattle farming and producers in the United States? From the complexities of muscle protein synthesis and breakdown under the influence of a low-carb diet, the role of concentrated foods like protein powder, and how the carnivore diet impacts hormone balances, this in-depth conversation with Dr. Shawn Baker highlights how simple nutrition, devoid of processed foods, can radically change your health and lifestyle.

Dr. Shawn Baker, an orthopedic surgeon, has a solid foundation in medicine and athletics. Embracing a carnivorous lifestyle, he has become a leading advocate for the carnivore diet, which emphasizes the consumption of animal-based products for optimal health and performance.
"And as anybody who's not living on a rock has heard, well, to save the planet from impending disaster, the cow farts are boiling the oceans and we got to get rid of the cows and we got to get everybody to eat more insects and soybeans and plant-based foods and that type of stuff, and we just need to cut back, whereas I think the opposite is true. I think we need to cut back on the ultra-processed foods and include more high-quality proteins in the diet. And the interesting thing is that a lot of us that do this, we actually consume far less food than the average person. We make far less waste." - Dr. Shawn Baker

2 years ago, I was begging my orthopedic surgeon to replace my knee. To his credit he said there was plenty of cartilage left and I didn't need any replacement.
Problem was I did have scar tissue from a previous cartilage replacement surgery, and my body was so inflamed. The scar tissue was causing me constant knee pain. 2 years later and through carnivore and intermittent fasting, I just finished a 5K with no knee pain.

Dr. I am a 78-year-old male. In many ways, I'm typical during my younger years, especially in my 20s. I could eat just about anything, and I felt good. I was healthy, I can remember when I was in the Navy, and sometimes I would have weekend liberty. I would rent a hotel room with special rates for service people, and one of my favorite things to do was buy a dollar's worth of candy bars. In 1966 you could buy ten candy bars for a dollar, which were about the same size as today. And I enjoyed sometimes being by myself and having a room and television set all to myself. So I would eat all ten candy bars over the weekend and other standard American diet burgers and fries. I felt great, and at the end of the weekend, I put on my size 31 waist uniform and returned to my ship. As I got into my 30s and 40s, I experienced the same middle-aged weight gain as most people.
In my 50s, I developed a nasty case of ulcerative colitis; the doctors told me I would have it for life the best we could do was manage it. I spent a miserable year at 54 trying to do what the medical establishment told me. Finally, in desperation, I turned to the Internet and found the Atkins diet against medical advice. I did it anyway because their pills weren't Helping. I eventually threw all the drugs away and went on Atkins, and within six months, my colitis was gone. After that, however, I started developing gout. The medical establishment blamed all the Meat I was eating, never once thinking it could be anything else. I used to love to sauté lots of spinach and cauliflower, but they're healthy, right? They couldn't possibly be causing my gout.
I quit the Atkins diet and started eating the standard American diet again. I went up to over 260 pounds, felt terrible, and lived that way until I was about 70. The great thing about the ketogenic diet is that it got the fat ratio right compared to early Atkins, about 65% fat to 35% protein. A few years ago, I accidentally stumbled upon you and Dr. Barry; I started following your advice. What a difference I now weigh in The 180s; my testosterone went from 2 to over 10.
The best thing is that it's relatively easy. The only tricky part is when you go to friends and family to have dinner, they look at you weirdly when you say, all I want is Meat, and then I usually get some comment like that diet can't be healthy...My reply is that I feel great, and my clothes fit a lot better, at least the new smaller ones I bought; that usually ends the conversation. I'm one of those rare people in their late 70s who take zero medications. The best medication is a good ribeye steak. And I don't use any of those blue pills either.

Almost a year and a half as a hyper carnivore and I haven't been this healthy in over 30 years.
I have no dreams of living to 120 but I know now my remaining years will be as capable as I possibly can be. Physically, mentally and emotionally.
Why anyone would not want that and prefer a slow debilitating death is beyond my comprehension.

As an ecologist and a beekeeper, properly stocked rotated pastures are way better for biodiversity, soil carbon and wildlife (including insects) than tilled, chemical laden monocrops. I keep my bees away from intensive agricultural systems.
Our property is too small to raise a beef. However, we are raising our first batch of pasture raised chicken. I move them every couple of days. They get so excited on fresh pasture. Behind them I sow forage seeds to enhance the pasture for both chickens and bees. Meanwhile they fertilise the orchard and provide manure for the garden and berries. Its a fun project. Looking forward to the eggs.
Their is some fat with chicken. I save it to cook the eggs with every morning. And of course we eat the skin.

I got A-Fib when I got COVID (Delta) in September 2021. The only reason I broke down and went to the ER--because I had none of the normal COVID symptoms--was because I was EXHAUSTED and couldn't walk 20 feet without collapsing from exhaustion. The exhaustion was due to the A-Fib, so trust me, I get it.
Then, they tried THREE different beta-blockers on me to get my heart back into a normal sinus rhythm...and no matter what, I'd bust out into A-Fib 1-3 times per week. I had two cardioversions and all they did was burn where the paddles were. I ended up having a cardiac ablation in December 2021 which fixed the A-Fib...but the 20 pounds I gained from the beta-blockers refused to come off.
My electrophysiologist didn't want me to do keto--at least less than 50 grams of carbs--because he didn't want my electrolytes to drop and mess my heart up, so I finally ordered some LMNT and started something between keto and carnivore on May 27th. I've already lost 15 of the 20 pounds I'd gained with the beta-blockers and I'm planning to continue on until all my weight is off and any saggy skin is fixed through autophagy. At least I'm not dealing with A-Fib anymore!!! On the flip side, the reason I determined to start keto/carnivore was because my knee was acting up and I was having intermittent unexplained blood pressure problems...but we think that was because I had a strep infection that was never caught that was causing issues. It was lose the weight or deal with more problems.
However...I recommend being cautious! A-Fib is not a joke and nothing to mess around with. Looking back, I think that's what my grandmother died from. Actually, I think she died after being in A-Fib and the little appendage on the back of the heart--I can't remember what it's called--threw a clot and it went straight to her brain. They didn't have Eliquis or anything like it back then to prevent those issues.
Make certain you are attending to your electrolytes if you attempt dropping your carbs until you are "fat-adapted" and have been in ketosis for at least three weeks.

And yes, having the ablation was definitely a blessing. Getting the weight off from the beta-blockers is also a blessing! I hope I don't have to deal with A-Fib again...but on the off chance I do, my electrophysiologist gave me some Eliquis samples to take if it starts back up. I'm hoping that by getting my weight off and staying keto/carnivore, I can head any more issues "off at the pass".

@@mandyb2000 I am not talking about "factory farming". I am talking about Regenerative Farming (one term that is used). Desolate, baron land has been recovered, replenished, revitalized by bringing back hooved herds, controlling their movements, not letting them over graze any patch of land. It also requires FAR LESS use of fossil fuels. Do you even realize how many times a tractor needs to be fired up when producing large scale row crops?! Wonder why the row crop farmers were so hard hit during the price explosion and availability issues for chemical fertilizers? Because all the nutrients have been depleted from the soil. When cattle/sheep/goats/poultry are on the land they PUT BACK nutrients into the land. When their movements are properly managed, with little or no use of fossil fuels, the land starts to hold water instead of it washing the soil away.
I think that Joel Salatin is the most published farmer, but there are many, many others out there who encage in this type of farming. Some don't even own tractors!

My Cardiologist would probably cut ties with me if I told him I'm eating a CARNIVORE DIET for over 40 days now. I will be getting my blood work up in the next few weeks before I see my Cardiologist this August 11th. I'm 67 yrs young... My BMI is 25.

LDL is only "bad" when it gets damaged from HIGH INSULIN.
Remember, cholesterol is a precursor to testosterone and vitmain D and is a building block for all cell membranes in our bodies.

      @elizabethwhite1068 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

I tried responding to this but it looks like it didn't actually post, so I'll try again. LDL is not the problem and it has been demonized unfairly. The Diet-Heart Hypothesis has been repeatedly debunked. The only potential danger is if you have a high count of the small dense particles, which high carb/high sugar highly processed food diets can give you. There are many different things that can potentially damage the arterial lining, smoking, seed oils, sugar, air pollution, to name a few. Cholesterol then shows up to repair the damage. Cholesterol is vital to life. So it's like blaming the spackle for the hole in the wall. The biggest factors associated with CHD are Type 2 Diabetes and metabolic disease. What you should be getting tested is your fasting insulin, a1c, and C-peptide, along with the lipid panel. But LDL is not the most important number. Triglyceride to HDL ratio is a better marker of heart health. I recommend reading Dr. Ovadia's book, as well as Dr. Malcolm Kendrick's book The Clot Thickens. Also, Dr. Ken Berry has a lot of great videos on LDL/cholesterol/heart health and tests you should be getting.

I find it very difficult to find a Doctor who is on top of their game with regard to the latest research! Many of these Doctor's I speak with give me a difficult time! Big PHARMA is also involved with the lies we have been told; along with the incorrect "FOOD pyramid" that was garbage from the beginning!!! I believe all these lies have been promoted by FALSE evidence and the food industry!! I say " FOLLOW THE MONEY TRAIL" connections and corruption!!! May I ask you: DO you eat a CARNIVORE DIET or KETO DIET, PALEO Diet, Mediterranean diet? This CARNIVORE DIET takes some serious discipline! But, I'm hoping and praying this will truly help me get off my Heart Medication's!! I also believe exercise and working out with weights is very good for keeping my metabolism healthy!! I would argue that meat replacement products are more danger to the environment than cattle ranches, blaming meat is vegan and plant based organization propaganda. With a meat based diet there is better soil management, less food waste and less health care cost/waste. My family eats a meat based diet and we have about a quarter of the trash and (not really recycled) recyclable materials than probably all of our neighbors. Thanks for a great show.

I can only be a strict carnivore for a few months at a time. It's a horrible excuse, but I work shift work, and when an emergency arises, I'm stuck for the duration until solved. That and during the holidays I find myself weak and fall off the wagon. I do find when I'm strict, my bloodwork is great, I feel great, and the years of injuries don't feel bad.

So carbohydrates do affect muscle breakdown when someone does a lot of endurance based activities? This may explain why as someone on a low carb/no carb diet for decades I try and avoid those activities which require constant energy use. My preference is to work hard, then rest between jobs.

Surplus of nutritious calories plus physical activity = muscle maintenance. Endurance exercise helps tone, explosive exercise helps build. Both plant based and animal based diets can help achieve health goals. Simply listen to the body and pay attention to modified/artificial ingredients and pesticides/antibiotics. My diabetes got worse on high fat carnivore diet. I got high sugar symptoms like peeing a lot, very thirsty and high blood sugars. Now I do lower fat/ high protein and I have halved my blood sugars. Protein doesn't raise my blood sugars at all as a diabetic. I regularly test my blood sugars. Now high fat raises my Basel blood sugars too high. My body proves this to me by its response. I asked for many years why my blood sugars were getting worse on carnivore and no one could tell me. Then I went lower fat and my blood sugars went down dramatically. Always test on yourself one plan doesn't fit all. I was a type 2 diabetic then I went on to be an adult on set type 1 diabetic on the carnivore diet.

Is that why bodybuilders consume sugars post workout? Surely that one time after strenous exercise each time is safer than carbs all day to refill the muscles? Are carbohydrates really hydrating? Or is it inflammation in the muscles? Im confused
