1989 Mustang American Iron Race Car - One Take

  • American Iron is a national racing series for 1979-94 Ford Mustangs, Chevrolet Camaro's, and Pontiac Firebirds. Todd's American Iron car makes stout power, is ridiculously loud, and somehow, remains road legal.

    Lol! The review came out really well! The car has Cherry Bomb glass packs, which are more than half the weight of the Flowmasters; it's all about weight savings, people! Too bad Matt didn't go WOT to 6k, because it really sings at those revs. Also, the car only sees the street when I'm taking to my mechanic and fabricator, Jim's Auto in Oakland, NJ. So, don't think I'm commuting in it everyday. :) I'm going to update my Wheel Well profile ASAP.

      +Todd Honczarenko What does this feel like in the corners? I have the same transmission as well. How does the griggs racing suspension work on the street as I am interested in one. I have alot of questions........ What kind of tire do you run on it?

    • @thonczarenko
      @thonczarenko 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Thomas Jeffereson I have a modified TKOII which has a different input shaft that's 28 spline to fit the Mustang clutch. I love this transmission!
      When I put the Griggs stuff in, I ran 350# springs up front (coil over) and had rear control arms with spring perches with 400# springs. Now I have rear cool overs with 300# springs (really stiff because I like a little oversteer) and 500# springs up front. For the street the 350# springs were great and if go with 200# or 225# rears. I also run Griggs custom valved Koni Yellows (double adjustable) struts and shocks. It's amazing how the car transforms into a precise cornering machine after the upgrade. It is easier to drive in the rain and it stops better too.
      I did the brakes first and then the suspension. Then I finally added power after the other stuff was done.

    • @thonczarenko
      @thonczarenko 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Thomas Jeffereson I wrote more stuff but my phone crashed. Basically any tire that is decent will be great on the Griggs setup. I run the delrin bushings on the front control arms and the rear was a combo of a heim joint and a urethane bushing when it was on the street. Now it's an aluminum control arm with heim joints at both ends.
      I can't remember if I wrote that it was much improved in the rain and my car stops much better with the suspension. It totally gets rid of the squirrelly rear end and vague front end of the OEM stuff.

    Matt remember one thing, street legal outside of California is a huge difference from street legal in California. People tend to say "you aren't in California anymore you're in the US".

      ***** oh believe me, I've lived here 23 of my 30 years and I hate the laws here.. You'd think LA would be even worse about smog laws than the rural area north of Sacramento that I live in but it seems LA is more relaxed on their smog than us.. how stupid is that.

      ***** it exists, except it's not an island.. it's called Germany

    • @OtisENGINEuity
      @OtisENGINEuity 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** okay... considering Germany is pretty much like Washington State "Germany has a temperate climate throughout the country with warm summers and cold winters, however long periods of frost or snow are rare. Rain falls throughout the year. The average monthly January daytime temperature is 3 degrees celcius (38 degrees Fahrenheit) and in July it's 22 degrees celcius (72 degrees Fahrenheit). Extremes temperatures sometimes reach -10 degrees celcius (5 Fahrenheit) in winter and 35 degrees celcius (95 Fahrenheit) in the summer months."
      The thing is the higher in altitude you go the colder it will be obviously.. The big plus side to Germany is the roads.. But then Austria and Swizterland have amazing roads too.

    What a surprise, I go for my regular Smoking Tire fix, only to see Matt in a car sitting next to my sticker! We have had nothing to do with the Mustang despite being so visible on the car however. Todd uses our pedals in his race simulator as one of many of our customers who race in 'real life' do. Awesome car Todd, I think I could hear it over here in Holland... ;-)

    I have driven my car back from Pocono International because my friend who trailered my car to the track had to leave early due to an emergency and I wanted to stay for the next race; I wanted to win the championship so I had to get the points. I destroyed my front tires (slicks) driving it home, because it was all highway miles and I ran almost 4 degrees neg camber at the time.

    Matt, you never mentioned the torque arm. Both a panhard rod and watts link are devices used for lateral locating of the rear axle. The torque arm is what solid axle Mustangs really need, which gets rid of the stock upper rear control arms (and binding).
    Also, you may want to mention, in the description, that the car's power is limited by class rules, as it appears a lot of people are latching on to your "feels slow" comment.

    Matt you sure this is in Greenwich? I think I know that road, starts in Armonk, goes to Mt. Kisco if you kept going a bit more. I used to work in a building nearby and drive on that road for fun all the time.

      +Roninwarrior7 I imagine he's just calling all his one-takes while he's "back home" either Greenwich or CT, even if they're not actually in Greenwich (which this one certainly isn't, 128 is a NY road)

    fucking hell dude, the v8s from that generations man. The mechanical sounds of the engine is so good. Unlike the v8s that mercedes makes nowadays.

    serious question here: are you ever gonna do anything else besides one takes? I love these but I loved your other content as well

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jake Chapin I do lots of other content! We have 8 episodes of /DRIVE on NBC Sports, (available on iTunes and Google Play), we have a full 10-episode season of /TUNED airing right now on /DRIVE+, we have All Cars Go to Heaven 2 coming out this fall, and we have a podcast every week, as well as part 2 of Rally North America coming up. Tons of stuff going on that's more produced. We just do a lot of one takes, because they are quick and easy, and youtube isn't like TV; it' pays very little and only by volume, not by quality.

    You should do a challenge - drive this from Los Angeles to San Diego (through Long Beach and Orange County) without getting puled over by C.H.P. once. I dare you.

    Why does this use race gas to make 320 rwhp?
    I know plenty of Mustang guys who make way more than that on stock 5.0s on just 93?
    Its not really the same but my wrx makes around 300 awhp, and that's on 93 as well...
