That's what i liked about this video, the owner is into drivng, this is a drivers car, even if the car is not perfect you can see the bond they have... sometimes (sometimes) money and mechanichs-workers-paidmods make this bond fragile i think. but even in those situations when you see the driver is in to it, enjoying it, feeling it and suffering it even in that situations you can say ''Damn i love this''
Great video. That was fun. As a Fox body owner, this is why we are annoying you about the Fox body project car. Sorry, we can't help ourselves. These cars are unrefined, but they are a blast! Thanks for taking us on this run. It was almost like being there.
this series is awesome, if you don't like it don't watch - at the end of the day, we don't just want to see new cars reviewed, it's also awesome to see old ones and modded ones, this is a great way to see more cars which is a win-win in my book.
Having owned, modded and simply loved Fox body mustangs for the last 20 years, I love this video. Currently finishing up the tune on my '93 Cobra... full Max Motorsport suspension but kept the live axle to handle the power - Incon twin turbo 347 through an MMR Tremec. Car is black on black... have owned more black foxes than any, '87, 89, '92 and 2 93's. They can look very mean when done well. Great to see a video like this with 2 Fox enthusiasts... sort of rekindles my focus in the dead of a cold long winter here in Michigan! Keep more vid's like this coming!!
Im currently restoring my '87 GT hatch with T-tops. Doing the full MM suspension with IRS, Cobra brakes all the way around and possibly throwing a coyote under the hood some where down the road.
***** Nice. My first Fox was a black '87 with T-tops about 20 years ago. Loved that car and should have never got rid of it, but wanted to build something better as the story goes. I had the 16" Pony's on it, Vortech A-trim (talk about old school) and GT-40 al heads/intake plus all the supporting mods. Remember one of my first mods was a Ram Air kit which I installed in my driveway while it was snowing. Even had a pull out cassette player with the remote CD player that plugged into the cassette player. Sounds like you're treating yours right with some modern mods.
This guy is awesome. He does not flinch during the ride and know is his Mustang inside and out. Its really cool how he is doing this on a budget. I also have done things like run to Home Depot for parts instead of the auto parts place to save money. The fox body is one of my dream cars. NIce car.
This one was great... it was nice hearing the passenger talk about his car instead of just awkward periods of silence :p That thing was glued to the road too. Didn't even look like a mustang's dash cam
Friendly advice, don't hold your breath. He was driving a black 5.0 '15 mustang about 2 months ago, No review yet. (he mentioned "driving it this week"[aprx. 7 weeks ago] and it was shown in the background)
thanks Matt for another great vid and I hope Wheelwell tosses you some cash for the plug. It is just so cool to see two real car guys going back and forth about all the different mods on a car. And the Fox body is so common at drag strips and such, great to see one getting screen time.
its amazing watching how much you enjoy driving this compared to what you have had recently. These fox bodys come off as the perfect meccano set car, buy a good clean shell, and bolt on the bits to make it yours and make it do what you want. kinda like an american S13 lol
i am so glad to see Matt driving another fox! I understand that for the displacement of the engine, the power output seems...lacking, but the engine delivers gobs of torque and very usable power, with the sounds to back it up. the Fox is a great platform to start, with "little" money, you can put some real power down with some serious torque making it perfect for canyons or RR. modern top end kit with stock short block should put around 300 wheel HP no prob. Sure, any civic on the high way will kill it but when do you get to open your turbo car up to 4000 or so before you make any real power? I think a $5000 - $8000 built stang could DESTROY a lot of much more expensive or turbo straight line cars where it counts, corners. great place to start, Matt seems to think so, cant wait to see matts and finish mine :)
TheSmokingTire if you want to swap your long Hurst Shifter for a short one, let me know, happy to swap with you, my 95 GT needs a little more reach with the shifter. Also for the owner, if you are going to change your rear gear, go 3:73's not 4:10's. The 4:10's make 1st and 2nd gear a little short, especially if you are going to either daily it, or drive it frequently. You car is light enough that 73's will be perfect. I say this as someone who has owned an 83 GT, a 92 LX Notch and now a 95 GT.
I agree with the 3.73 but I have been back and forth between that and 4.10 it's just as I said I have a tremec t5 with the 2.95 first gear which was designed so you could use 1 and 2 unlike the 3.35 in the world class t5 which is almost unusable with any higher rear gear than stock.
Michael Elterman I've got 4:10's in my 95 GT with a 2:95 first, and it's OK, if my car wasn't 3300lbs I'd be all for 73's. I had 73's in my 83 GT and my 92 LX Notchback and they were perfect, both on the street and the track, you also save yourself about 200 rpm at highways speeds with 73's.
It's not quite let the clutch out and get ready to pull second like with 4:10's and a 3.35 1st gear, but it's not much off of it. Granted I have a lot more torque than you but I don't even have to slip the clutch to start off from a dead stop in 2nd.
Hey dude sweet Fox! I can't stress enough how much better your steering feel will be after you upgrade to a Momo steering wheel. I've had my 92 for 9 years and it has been one of the last things I've done, but I totally regret not doing it earlier. Trust me, it's a completely different car with it.
***** www.americanmuscle.com/momo-monte-steering-wheel.html I got this one, but realistically any of the momo wheels are much smaller which really helps with the feel. You also need a momo wheel hub to attach it which is about $90.
Wolf Brown Will this help tighten up my steering a bit? Mine feels so loose and kinda goes where it pleases on the free way and I always have to correct it. It may be front end components but the steering is also so damn light.
Yes. It completely changes the feel of the steering. When you have that big ass airbag wheel it almost feels like you have zero feel of the road. The smaller steering wheel makes everything feel crisp, and it adds a little bit more weight to the steering since it is smaller and you don't have as much leverage. Like I said in my original post this is something I wish I would've done years ago.
Awesome post! The car engine noise wasn't loud at all I could hear everything perfectly thru my shitty HP laptop speakers. Actually sounds like heaven lol
I love foxes, and I've owned (3 so far ...), but they do have a few bad tendencies that are hard to escape due to the poor chassis/suspension geometry. After a few steering/brake/suspension upgrades it stuck okay in the turns, but it always had a bad tendency to plow at the limit until you applied throttle and then it just broke the rear tires loose. I had a buddy who did the Griggs TA setup, and that completely changed the handling characteristics of the car. It still plowed at the limit, but you could put the throttle down coming out of turns without the tires instantly going up in smoke. I would really like to thrash a full Griggs setup with the SLA front around a track :)
The biggest thing I've noticed about steering feel is steering rack bushings, suspension arm bushings (both obvious), but also sizable low speed compression damping that feeds in a lot of tactile road sensation into the car.
Regardless with how the car actually performs, even myself would find it hard to blatantly call out the faults of these cars. More power to the owners for building performing cars from scratch but I think the criticism could be more direct. But the fact that this owner actually knew what he was talking about was pretty cool, I even liked the light switch/ diy touch to be honest.
The only problem I have with this video is the absolute love of the IRS when the SRA can handle just as well. For street use the IRS will be less harsh but the SRA will handle just as well on a road course.
Driving like this is great in the Appalachians for us east coast boys. However, only once have i had anyone pull over to let me by.... For once, I envy the west coast.
I'm not a Sports/Performance Car kind of person, so I don't know why I keep enjoying these videos, but I do. I have been somewhat impressed with how often you catch up to people on your runs and they pull over to let you pass. I have been all over the Southeastern U.S. and I have never seen anyone do this on two lane roads. Here in Florida it's even hard to get people to move right on four or six lane roads. Is this common in Cali or is it just a a known consideration on these twisty canyon roads?
thankfully, people also pull out of the way for me too, especially in my monte carlo. They usually hear it and move over, but I try to stay off of people's bumpers. I'll look for a way around and if there is none, I'll just slow down. I don't want anyone to slam on the brakes on me.
I think even if I wasn't an enthusiast and driving a slow car around those canyons I would let people pass me. First off, they see that the car behind them looks fast. Second, they know that there will be regionals who know that canyon well and don't have to drive with cautions. And at last if people hug your rear bumper you will feel uncomfortable and either move out the way or if you're an asshole break check them.
Matt, I hope the big trip is going well! Can't wait to see all the cool content that will come out of it. My question is, with the relativly low power the old 5.0 makes, do you think it is better to go for street carver application like mike did, or play the weight advantage (although hatch's are heavy i know) and update the engine and go drag racer? I understand it is personal preference as well, but I'm looking at getting a fox down the road
I mean, it depends what you enjoy doing with your car. If you like carving canyons, building a drag car won't be much fun. If you like drag racing, you'll be disappointed with the stock output of the old 302.
Of course of course. And the problem is there will always be better stock cars for what your doing with the fox. Miata for canyon carving, built engine cars for drag, etc But there is something about seeing this loveable brick of a car go fast anywhere. I guess either way you go you will be spending money on either suspension or engine
TheSmokingTire I am sure your fox is far beyond the one in the video. I am surprised at how low the HP is for this car. The 80's low compression motors were terrible. However, it does sound good and I like the concept.
I hope Matt takes his Fox Body Mustang serious and whips ass on the track . The best thing Matt can do is twin turbo and supercharge his Fox Body and find some Kenny Brown parts online . Your talking about 800 hp SON!... . I also hope to see how he would do in drag racing against those 1320 guys I bet he can beat them in a race I have faith in Matt's Fox body dammit ! :/
Not a big american car fan but I do like those old fox body mustangs, someone needs to build one like the so rare few they ran in the old DTM series, now that would be something epic. Despite lack of power for the engine size they do sound good, ,its one of the few areas (older) american muscle really shines.
Might seem like a low HP figure, but the guy tuned the car for balance and grip and it shows. It's a good project car, even with it's shortcomings due to it's age.
I love it when you have people on who can really talk shop about their cars. LOL I lost my shit when I saw the light switch. You getting any E30 or E36 guys calling you up Matt?
how long will you be doing the one take stuff? i have an sn95 build in progress that im putting an 03 cobra motor with b heads and later a centri in with the MM suspension in. insurance will pay me very soon as my project was rear ended so this will happen within the next few months.
This was great. Dude really sounds like he knows his stuff!
That's what i liked about this video, the owner is into drivng, this is a drivers car, even if the car is not perfect you can see the bond they have... sometimes (sometimes) money and mechanichs-workers-paidmods make this bond fragile i think. but even in those situations when you see the driver is in to it, enjoying it, feeling it and suffering it even in that situations you can say ''Damn i love this''

us sn95 guys too seeing as we still have the same chassis.
Yes indeed.

Not huge on domestics but I really dig the approach that the owner (Mike) is taking with this build.
One of my favorite sounding cars of all time. I can identify the exhaust note from blocks away. I like it a lot....
Love to see cars like this modded by someone who really knows their stuff.
Looks like he's doing it right. Add a little more horsepower and that thing will surprise some people.
Dude seems real chill, and has some camera time. +1
240z in the back (heavy breathing)
lol for real... cant wait to see it
I'd rather see that Z xD
Your comment distributed communicable diseases to a large number of individuals. Punk.
Friendly advice, don't hold your breath.
He was driving a black 5.0 '15 mustang about 2 months ago, No review yet.
(he mentioned "driving it this week"[aprx. 7 weeks ago] and it was shown in the background)
The perfect example of when two cars guys, with the same car meet!
Looks like a solid performer, these Foxs are great platforms for projects.
thanks Matt for another great vid and I hope Wheelwell tosses you some cash for the plug. It is just so cool to see two real car guys going back and forth about all the different mods on a car. And the Fox body is so common at drag strips and such, great to see one getting screen time.

im surprised how well the mustang handled! excellent job!
this has been one of my favorite ones yet good video love the sound of that car
Strangely, i could perfectly hear what Mike was saying.
It's relieving to actually have a knowledgable guest.
I was honestly surprised how quickly that thing took a few of those corners, that IRS must really help.
Horsepower sells cars, torque wins races.
Good reason to drive a bus or truck
cool to see the people on the same road pulling over to let them pass. i've never known anything like it
TheSmokingTire if you want to swap your long Hurst Shifter for a short one, let me know, happy to swap with you, my 95 GT needs a little more reach with the shifter.

Seeing this makes me miss my 86 notchback 5.0 5speed.
The sound of the 5.0 is hard to beat
Matt you must let him drive your fox when it's ready :)
Finally a fox body. Thanks for doing that matt
I like this dude's grassroots build. Lightswitch for the win
lol this guy's a riot. Love that -light- fan switch!
These videos are awesome, keep them coming.
This was awesome, I love the fox body. Minimal hate, but its just hilarious to hear 240hp from a 5.0lt v8. Its really amazing how detuned they came...
Kane Jacobs 240 wheel with probably minimal mods. Bro seriously this car is from the 80s what exactly do you expect it to make?
Hey dude sweet Fox! I can't stress enough how much better your steering feel will be after you upgrade to a Momo steering wheel. I've had my 92 for 9 years and it has been one of the last things I've done, but I totally regret not doing it earlier. Trust me, it's a completely different car with it.

I missed that at first! I'm hoping the same thing now.
The sound is surprisingly good even under throttle.
I want a fox Mustang so bad! I've always loved them.
Awesome post! The car engine noise wasn't loud at all I could hear everything perfectly thru my shitty HP laptop speakers. Actually sounds like heaven lol

hope you get your fox home son :)that fox looks like it going very good and your got better parts so really looking forward to se it on the road:)
Seeing this makes me want my 89 lx 5.0 back!
I was just about to say how nice those tires looked until I heard they were Federals....
Guy has balls to taking corners with chinese tires mounted
I really hope you are still doing this when my Cadillac rally cross build is done. It will blow your mind.

The only problem I have with this video is the absolute love of the IRS when the SRA can handle just as well. For street use the IRS will be less harsh but the SRA will handle just as well on a road course.

Love in socal common to see people move out the way, the universal signal is to use left blinker in left lane mean out my way
It is a common driving road so maybe people know that, but it's a courtesy thing but also there are plenty of people that don't.
I think even if I wasn't an enthusiast and driving a slow car around those canyons I would let people pass me. First off, they see that the car behind them looks fast. I love Fox bodie mustangs. I will own one. One of these days as soon as I find one for decent price that isnt run to the ground! They are out there.
A fox body Mustang is one American car I really would love to own.
Somebody needs to bring a 91 SHO taurus
Every generation of SHO
Three pedal cars are way more fun! Cool!
Best guest owner yet.
I felt the same but idk why, kinda judgmental
Matt, I hope the big trip is going well! Can't wait to see all the cool content that will come out of it. Really cool to see a Fox Body on these roads. Matt, will yours get the same treatment?
mine is far, far beyond this one.
TheSmokingTire I think he meant if we will get a video of the Fox on some canyons lol.
IT BELONGS IN A MUSEUM.
TheSmokingTire
I am sure your fox is far beyond the one in the video. I am surprised at how low the HP is for this car. The 80's low compression motors were terrible. However, it does sound good and I like the concept.

I think someone already is :)
Holy shit I was just going through Craigslist and came across this car. EVERYONE he is actually selling it
WheelWell is dope I just signed up for my build...
Hey Matt, If ya ever are out on Long Island I'd love to have you drive my 1 series. May not be very fast but I promise that its fun!
Best vid yet!
Very cool segment.
nice setup, I'd like to do an IRS swap on my fox. I did things backwards, I should've done suspension before power :(
I need to take a trip to cali... No curves in the midwest, lots of long straights though.
I have a 91 fox as my first car (I'm 17) most fun I've had when it works
looks really sorted!
my c class build is difficult decided to go with a 5.2l V10 from the audi s6 after hacking the firewall but it should be ready by october
how long will you be doing the one take stuff? i have an sn95 build in progress that im putting an 03 cobra motor with b heads and later a centri in with the MM suspension in. insurance will pay me very soon as my project was rear ended so this will happen within the next few months.
awesome cant wait to see it in action i hope matt farah takes u :D
Roberson Lub this is in los angeles so its definitely possible lol
I got all excited for a second because I thought it was Matt's fox body :c
When I first saw the intro, I had thought that Mike made that wheelwell site
Id love to take mine for a spin on those roads
I hope to see that Z in the background reviewed !
mike is sweet. nice car man.
Light switch from Home Deport... hehe... Nice build!
Got on wheelwell now because of you Matt haha! Hope you accept my friend invitation (hopefully you'll be the first one!)
looks like a great road :)
That thing surprised me tbh but zero steering feels would just kill it for me but wow an American car that can corner!!
This kid must belong to a forum. Spec knowledge recognition is not short in this video. You can tell he's a seasoned information boasting vetterin lol
very good series
It sounds so good. :)
What are my chances of Matt driving my 2002 wrx? Would be awesome having his thoughts of the work I'm done to it. Created a profile on wheelwell
Would love to see some NZ videos soon Matt :)
Sounds great!
I thought Matt had a Vette ? Love the Foxbody Mustangs.
Did you review that Z in the background? Would be awesome if you did one of those.
Almost thought this was yours!
Awesome video, a reg guy with reg cash, lol love to light switch hahahaha
I would love own one of these and mod it!
