    Mine arrived two weeks ago together with the Alpha stick. Its just an incredible difference to my old X55. I fly mostly DCS Jets and use a Classic Plus detent in the back and a Classic one at the front. Also I like the options the software gives you to adjust the axis and buttons to your needs. Now I am happily waiting for the Control Panel 2.

    So good I bought it on the strength of your previous reviews, couldn't wait. It is way sturdier than it looks. The new detent system feels incredibly reliable, even for a heavy handed pilot who likes to really crank their throttle around (although I prefer a defter touch). This is my first Virpil device after I made the 'wallet friendly' decision to upgrade from my Thrustmaster HOSASAT setup, and so far I am completely blown away and will eventually be getting the Constellation Alpha L and R as well. Great review Jesse, top quality as always.

      @@jessecalder Mine arrived two weeks ago, and it has been an absolute enjoyment. If I have to complain, it would be that I hope there is one more axis on the throttle. In DCS when you bind the only axis to zoom view, there is no more axis to bind the antenna elevation, and digital nobs are atrociously slow at it. There is the flaps axis but I think most people bind it to buttons like me. But for Star Citizen it is just impeccable.

    I'd have to agree with Jesse's assessment of the CM3. I've had mine for the last few weeks, and if you hadn't had the experience of using one. Its almost a bit polarizing migrating from another Eco-system. The CM3 is intentional and positive of the actions it employs. Sure the cost is steep, but worth it and the wait if you're in the market. Note- For those of you semi familiar with programming PLC's. Its a similar experience of I/O mapping from a PLC to an HMI (kind of). With that said, customization is vast to say the least. The hardware is robust and satisfying to Jesse's point, but for me. The next level is the software once you really understand it in depth. Be patient and enjoy.

    Had no idea they were working on this, so was one of the unfortunate ones ordering a CM2 few months before the release of the CM3. Now I have a pretty long list of upgrades to go through before I'd find a CM3 upgrade worthwhile. Still very happy with the CM2 however, it's very high quality hardware and I've had zero issues with it so far.

    Loved the video! I'm still sad Virpil won't be making a detent kit for the CM2, as that's the throttle I have and I just can't justify spending another $500+ of my currency to acquire what I'd consider more of a side-grade than an upgrade. But there are other 3D printed solutions for my problem.

    • @JETZcorp
      @JETZcorp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah that's definitely annoying if you already got the CM2. However for me, the lack of detent was a major item that stopped me buying the CM2. Now that the CM3 has the sexiest detents in town, I might just have to actually spend a couple months eating rice and beans in order to get it in my life. Then when the CM4 comes out with heated and cooled grips and automatic hand massage, we can both make the surprised Pikachu face together.

    Hey Jesse, loving the new channel logo! Happy to see your review on this product as usual. @jessecalder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Damey! I have to say I don't think it would work very ideally for a lefty. You could certainly manipulate the arms and levers comfortably so if that is your main goal that is doable. In fact I'd say it is more comfortable a grip when used with your right hand than a Warthog for instance. But you will likely give up a large number of functions on the 'thumb' side as you'll have to work those buttons, hats, and wheel blindly and in an odd leverage position which might make precise manipulation of a couple of them harder as well. Hope this is useful!

    I know this is kinda weird, but what I did is I put the classic detent on the afterburner, then I actually put a warthog detent backwards to make it higher on the throttle, what I do is keep the throttle below the first detent, mainly to make taxiing easier, and with the slope on the front of the warthog detent it makes me able to push through from idle to mil power with just a bit of difficulty, it's great

    How do you like the 4-way/8-way hats on the throttle? Has there been any change compared to the CM2? I am not sure whether I heard it in your review or some other one, but as far as I know, these hats have a tactile click when you move them from the center in any direction, but afterwards you can spin the hat full 360 degrees around the outer edge without feeling any other click. I think this can cause the hats to be imprecise and it is a little worrying to me as I am used to regular hat switches where there is a tactile feedback in all of the 4 or 8 positions.

      @jessecalder  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't guarantee anything without knowing your exact setup but what I can say is that when the throttle is pushed all the way forward the levers do not extend forward of the most forward part of the grip. They do dip below button deck a bit though. I can't imagine they or your fingers get hung up unless your button box is so close as to make plugging in the cables difficult.

    • @dabneyoffermein595
      @dabneyoffermein595 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jessecalder Thank you. Yea, the area of the cables is tight but not crazy. I will look a bit closer at it. I worry that when the levers (finger-release) come out or they are at their maximum distance away from the throttle posts, it would get in the way. I will use your reference points to do some measuring. Thanks again!

    I'm confused about the controls on the back side of the throttle - there are five various controls for 4 fingers. How do the fingers naturally map to the controls? Do you have only the pinkey on the left throttle or pinkey and ring finger?
    Also, out of curiosity, is anyone using any button on the throttle as a DCS modifier? I currently use modifier on TWCS, two actually (I know, I overdid it, probably) and these are the buttons on my pinkey and ring finger. With this probably one modifier would be more than enough, but I can't see how the fingers map to the controls.

    How well do the physical detents line up in DCS with the actual point the burners come in? For example on the warthog detent I assume they line up with the throttle stops in game perfectly for the A10. Do they also for the burners on the F18, F16 etc etc or is that something which needs tweaking in the virpil soft/firm(ware) on a profile basis per module?

    • @jessecalder
      @jessecalder  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The detents/gates can be physically moved forward and backward an inch or so. If you can't find the sweet spot with that then you'll have to get it close and then jump into the software and adjust it more there. Each game (and possibly each aircraft) is likely to have a different range so I have different profiles for each setup, though that does require a bit more work.

    I mostly play Star Citizen and only every now and then DSC.
    I created a virtual detent in the 50% position (all LEDs turn red) for SC.

    For DCS a would reprogram that virtual detent to 80%, to see, when the AB kicks in.

      That is a tough one SP. I think if it were me I'd likely seek out the aftermarket systems that are out there for the CM2. I haven't used them myself yet but they seem quite good. Less choices but solid detents. Or upgrade and sell the CM2 to recover some of the cost.

    I got the throttle disappointing not all the buttons work. Yea yeah I know there is a fix whatever game wise DCS throttle and zoom axis work but after matching the toggle switches to the F16 switches in DCS was sweet but next time i played the game the mapping was gone! My older flight sims only the axis works buttons do not. The lock failed I needed to use a high end zip tie to keep the right and left throttle working. I ended up going back to my saitek x52 throttle it works on everything. The throttle will not run on the new version of BMS 4.36 the throttle goes into full after burner crash F16's unless you find a program called alternative something. I fell for the Virpil crowd it is well built but naaah.

    I was wondering if you have or had the same problem as me. The throttle is weird in being power change isn't linear. Once you come off center the throttle ramps up to full automatically. To return to see throttle I have to pull the throttle all the way back AND return to center. If I leave it what should be zero throttle reverse thrust activates. To get back to zero throttle in reverse I have to do the same thing go to 100% throttle and back to center. I want it to operate like a normal throttle and a button to activate reverse thrust. Any suggestions would be welcomed.

    • @jessecalder
      @jessecalder  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Often times the sensor is more sensitive than we need it to be. It happens quite often with stick bases as well. I would recommend starting with adjusting your deadzone to be a bit larger. You probably only have to increase it one or two units (decimals) to get it to stop registering movement smaller than we can even detect as humans. If that doesn't work I would certainly contact customer service to see if they can help you narrow the issue down.

    What I don't understand with the detents is how they are practical for DCS. In DCS a lot of the jets have different % of throttle inputs when the afterburner is activated. I guess my option then is to just remove the detents then?

    • @jessecalder
      @jessecalder  ปีที่แล้ว

      You’ve got to create a profile for the jet you wish to fly and calibrate the throttle range for it. If it doesn’t line up with a different aircraft you’d repeat the process (new profile) for that aircraft and so on. Just select the profile you want to use appropriate for the plane you’ll be flying.

    Just got this, the throttle itself is good but the buttom placement needs more work. You're not going to believe this but I consider the Saitek X-56 design better than this. With that said, of course Logitech's implementation stinks.
    Even the Warthog is a little better. The reason being there are SO MANY buttons in the front of the darn thing ON THE WAY, that you can't change thrust without hitting something unintentionally, in my case the 2 way hat, which is mapped to air brakes.
    The two wheels should be axis instead of buttons, there should be 8 shiftable buttons instead of 6 because T3 and T4 pretty much are the only reachable ones, T1 and T2 are useless and the knobs on the base should also be axes. This is how the X-56 was configured. So it's not a windows limitation.
    So yes, there should be a proper X-66 with properly built hardware.
    I do like the software that most dread though, plenty of customization.
