    Very true! I remember going to college and a friend of mine would not take any offers for student loans. She just worked her way thru college, sometimes she took off a semester just working, determined to pay her tuition by working side jobs. I didn't understand it at the time, but now I can really appreciate her stance on the matter. I think she appreciated college more, and took her classes seriously, than a student who used a loan, especially in her twenties at that time.

      This is what a lot of companies pay or at least approximately.
      I live in an average paying state and even most fast food restaurants are approaching 18 to $20 an hour just for starting wages.

      He needs to update his program. His baby steps are stuck in the 80’s. You need at least $3K to $5K for an emergency fund.

      @@devo6867 no, you need a 3-6 months of your outgoing budget as an emergency fund. That $1000 starter baby step is just to show yourself that you can save money, since the majority of people can't even do that nor have they tried.

      @@devo6867 Lol no his original plan was ZERO starter emergency fund. When you are in debt you need basically ALL the money going to the debt, not piling up money in an emergency fund. When you are out of debt, THEN you need 3-6 months expenses in an emergency fund.

    I waitressed.on the weekends and went to school thru the week I kept my GPA up for state funded scholarships. I paid cash for my room and board. I also joined the military and they paid for the rest

      There are always ways. Maybe you get some paid for by your employer, maybe some paid for with grants and scholarships, and maybe the rest with savings. Many people are too lazy to figure it out. They just want it all handed to them.

    Just told the hospital I expect $25/hr. for their janitorial opening. They admitted me for insanity. Now I'm a janitor requesting $25/hr. with a mental health diagnosis. The doctor said I didn't need to add the mental health diagnosis part to the sentence because it's implied when I requested $25/hr.

      @@paulinoaz Not really a 'discount' as it is being used. The theory is in state residents paid ( or their guardians paid ) state taxes to support the school. Out is state applicants pay a higher rate to compensate for that and prevent a 'free ride' at the state taxpayers expense.

    Dave... I wish I knew you back in the day... I went to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Univ back in 2004-2007. I came out with only 82k in debt and a degree but some students who took 5-6 years to get a 4 year engineering or pilot's degree had like 150-200k in debt. My debt was bad enough.

    tuition benefits if you agree to work for them when you graduate meaning only school programs that are relevant to the industry. most people are in school to get out of an industry that requires no degree to one who does. js and if you don't graduate or quit, you owe them now

    In our area, you can make start at $19-$21 an hour to be a Custodian I. For a Custodian III, which is not a Supervisor, it's up to almost $26

    Apply for FAFSA in October and scholarships. It's common sense. Work full time while you get the electives out of the way. It's an easy answer.

      The FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. It's the one-stop application that let's Federally-backed secondary education lenders know that you're seeking help paying for a secondary education. Information you add to that application will prompt lenders to offer you grants and loans. Say yes to grants, no to loans. Grants for not need to be paid back. Also, research ALL scholarships for which you MIGHT be eligible (there are hundreds) and you might just scare up enough money to cover your entire tuition. It's a lot of work, but hey, free college.

    My son is going to one of the majorly ranked universities in our state tuition free due to financial aid and scholarships. We are cash flowing the fees and books. I couldn't be more proud. He's going to a great school. Was accepted to every school he applied to but this one was a no brainer because it's tuition free! I'm very proud of my boy. No student loans and a very bright future ahead.

    I feel Dave has good advice many times but not this time. When I went for my RN I went through pell grants, Stafford loans, and there are federal tax credits available. I paid off the LOAN that I got and now I make so much more. I went to a community college so the loan wasn't crazy but still I got a loan.

      Jobs are like finding affordable homes.

    Everyone is leaning on the janitor comment. Stop taking everything so literal. It’s about making sacrifice and going to find a higher paying job. Most people want the ideal situation and when it doesn’t work, you struggle. Sometimes you can’t have the ideal situation.

      Well, he literally said it. More importantly however, depending on what she is studying, she may not have enough hours in the day to work 40 hours. If you’re studying something worthwhile between class, labs, and homework you’re probably in school more than 40 hours a week, and you do need to sleep! I get the impression that 40 years ago college was much, much easier, or maybe just certain majors?

      I was working dual jobs washing dishes at Denny's and Janitor while going to school full time. No life for over two years and lived in my van half the time.
      Could only get a good sleep on weekends.
      Wasn't that bad and all great once career started and money coming in.

      It is not the number of jobs , but the number of hours. Most people flex the number of jobs, but when you ask how many hours do you work per week it adds up to under one full time position.

      Really nothing to do about flexing or anything. All about doing what you have to do.
      When I was going to school a full time job meant benefits and they didn't want to do that for a student they know was going to be temporary. So it was always part time and you grab what you can get even if it meant up to three jobs and hours can be 10-40 or more hours a week.
      Up to the individual.
      Luckily I made the right decision buying a van. Living in it increased my living expenses over 90% without paying rent.
      Also worked,saved,and invested through high school and a year after before heading off to school so I had emergency fund so private loan was avoided and not necessary.

Im a result oriented person - so not impressed by how little or how much a person makes as long as they are financially independent ie can look after their elderly self.

    I don’t know what she’s studying, but if you’re studying engineering or a natural science at a decent school you don’t have time to work 40 hours. I was in class or labs for more than 40 hours a week. Plus homework and you do need to sleep sometimes. I get the impression that like 40 years ago college was a lot easier and you had like 20 hours of class or something. Is that right? People that are off the right age to make these comments all sound like that’s what they’re describing or they just took really easy majors?

    Budget Budget Budget do a FAFSA Grant. Look for scholarships! Maybe look for a job that will reimburse your tuition so your degree is free. Join ROTC which gives you a free college education and Officers commission. There are possibilities!

    Let me see someone save up 100K+ for graduate school with a 20/hour while getting competive grades in a "hard" science (versus a "soft" science), then work during graduate school to mitigate debt with even more advanced classes and survive. In some med schools, you have to sign a contract to NOT Work during school.

Our point of view is definitely different. We think that there's bad debt and manageable debt. The latter can actually give you some value because you can use it to buy money-making assets. The thing is that 98% of people ignore this because they lack financial education.

      I see their point about no social life in college and 'have your whole life for that' but the social aspect in college is unique and will never happen again, those times will never come back. It is much harder to meet people socially as an adult with work and real world responsibilities. Besides, almost everyone in the real world knows college grades and where you went really don't matter 10 minutes after graduation ( except doctors, lawyers and career students ).
