Dave killed this call. The way he delivered the hard truths to this guy was a wake-up call. It's something I fear the resf of the Ramsey personalities won't be able to do when he's gone. Getting out of debt is more than just numbers and selling cars, its about changing your lifestyle.
100% agree. We hear many calls with people making lots and lots of money and are still broke. So it's all about their lifestyle. I think the other ramsey personalities will be fine. I honestly think that John and Racheal may not be very tough on people because those 2 are pushovers. But I have heard Jade, George, & Ken get on to callers. So those 3 I do give credit to for having the balls to tell callers the truth while still having empathy for certain situations. But nobody will ever top Dave, I definitely agree with that.

My friends used to laugh at me. I buy used Honda for car. We eat lunch at ikea cafeteria for our wedding anniversaries while other people go on cruises. We do staycations when our friends go on three to four fancy vacations a year. I am now 67. Just retired due to minor health issues. Spouse is 62 will work till 65. Two houses paid for in about eight months. 1.2 million each. One is investment property. I don’t regret what I did. I feel at peace

A $50K kia sorrento is no different than any other $50K car. Leather seats, digital dash, bells and whistles. It’ll last 200K miles if you take care of it. I’m not saying it’s great or anything, but $50K is the standard price of most regular new car these days, whether it’s Kia or Toyota or whatever

So they took out a HELOC to pay off their credit card and then immediately started racking up the credit card again. And it doesn’t sound like he is even ready to change.
I've had my Kia for 10 years and only put new tires, brakes and a battery in it. Plan on keeping it another 10. 41 mpg. It's been a great vehicle, but I only paid 19k for it and obviously, no car payment.
That's true and it begs the question. Should we regulate more? Maybe loans shouldn't be be given unless there's some kind of ability to back the loan by the individual. Giving someone 80k for a degree with no promise of a job to match the debt, should be illegal.
I think investors should always put their cash to work, especially In 2024, we'll start to see more market diversification. I'm hoping to invest about $350k of my savings in stocks this year. Hope to make millions in 2024.

I let my ego take charge back in the 1980's, a sudden reduced income, and bingo, I couldn't pay my CC's or car...used for business...loan. It was a small bankruptcy as those things go. I swore never again. I had to go back to driving my ancient, un air conditioned van in southern CA for my work. I became very frugal, lived within my means from then on. Surprisingly, this had little impact on my, um, dating life. Some women don't care about the superficial, even in LA. No credit cards for years. When I finally got one about 12 years ago I mostly paid in full every month. Living within your means is a wonderful feeling.

Each one came to him at a later time to pay off equal amounts of debt they yet again accumulated. He said NO. They are no longer talking to him.

“It’s the family car” They immediately try to justify when they’re not ready to change. They’re one foot in, one foot out. The pain of being in debt needs to be worse than the pain of getting out of debt will be. It’s not painful enough yet.

Some callers are just tired of the treadmill. They need a break. Often people think "let's escape all this, go on a weekend-trip, go on vacation". But it won't work, if right afterwards they're back on the same treadmill again. Getting out of debts means working double as hard. That's what keeps people from changing bad habits - they feel they were already working very hard and they are tired of it.
I saw a credit consolidation add in which some guy said "they got me out of debt, I booked a trip to Puerto Rico." Probably used a credit card to get back into debt.
Honestly, I paid my way though college with minimal debt and after paying for rent, car insurance, books, and tuition for the winter semester I was reduced down to eating peanut butter sandwiches, drinking instant coffee, and ramen noodles for a month. Best financial lesson I ever took in college.

Hey man, I also had 5k in cc debt. To make it worse, I lost my job and my debt snowballed. I paid it off with a lot of difficult. I swear not to use credit cards again.
I've been there. Get another credit card with ZERO PERCENT interest (usually for a year) and do a balance transfer. Then cranck out that debt before the year ends. Make all your payments count!

Home equity line of credit. If your house has increased in value you can take a loan out in that value increase but if you mess up I think they take your house
Lol don't knock on Kia. I'm the proud original owner of a 2010 Kia Forte. It turns 14 years old next month. It has 190,000 miles on it and except for routine maintenance, tires, brakes, etc. it is still running strong. All I can go of off is my experience, and I'd recommend Kia to anyone.
We have a 2016 Sorento that’s been paid off for 3 years. Only reason people are upside down on car loans is because they rolled a prior car loan balance when they traded it in.

If you can control your life like that, one credit card is a good thing to have. Without one, no plane tickets, no car rentals, no safety cushion for the occasional life taking a dump on you, get you over to next pay day. I'm with you, though. The only debt I have is that monthly CC payoff and my property taxes.(I was lucky enough to inherit enough money to buy a small, solid house eight years ago. )
Only broke people would make fun of someone that is doing good financially. So if they are making fun of you, then you are on the right path. Not using credit cards as a crutch is very hard for many to understand cause they have never been able to handle their money. Amazing, I make similar at 130K a year. I have a net worth 1.3 million . No debt. House paid for. It is crazy what is possible for both ways. I am not saying I am better or worse...just how far the pendulum can swing with similar incomes.
I paid off my semi last month, I now have almost zero debt, I had little debt before the truck was paid off. I saw the light at the end of the tunnel before having this 1400 a week payment, even with that I was living on way less than I make since I knew what life is like without any major debt. I don’t see myself ever going back into debt, and I can’t believe I was one of those guys who made excuses to just keep borrowing. It’s a sickness and an addiction. I see friends and family who are basically drug addicts but for taking on debt. It truly changes your life when you start the process of detoxing from the stupid crap you try to justify needing, or at least you convince yourself you “need” it. It’s not much different than being a drug addict
I put my ex through school we lived without one cent of debt I worked three jobs he got out ran up a ton of debt in my name without me knowing filed for divorce and claimed I was the spender 210k in debt !
And this is why DR is against HELOCs. This is also a strong persuasion to not just consolidate debt, because it’s out of sight out of mind + a false sense of having actually accomplished something.

Honestly, I paid my way though college with minimal debt and after paying for rent, car insurance, books, and tuition for the winter semester I was reduced down to eating peanut butter sandwiches, drinking instant coffee, and ramen noodles for a month. Best financial lesson I ever took in college.

I love how Jade rattles off her paid-off debt number without having to think about it. It really does stick with you because it's a reminder of where you were and how far you've come to get out from under it, as well as motivation to never go back. Mine was $105,000. Paid it off in 34 months as a single dad with custody.

Hey man, I also had 5k in cc debt. To make it worse, I lost my job and my debt snowballed. I paid it off with a lot of difficult. I swear not to use credit cards again.
I've been there. Get another credit card with ZERO PERCENT interest (usually for a year) and do a balance transfer. Then cranck out that debt before the year ends. Make all your payments count!
I see so many callers where the train has left the station, crashed into a brick wall, then they call Dave for a miracle. This caller did everything wrong he possibly could before asking for help. I'm the proud original owner of a 2010 Kia Forte. It turns 14 years old next month. It has 190,000 miles on it and except for routine maintenance, tires, brakes, etc. it is still running strong.
All I can go of off is my experience, and I'd recommend Kia to anyone.
We have a 2016 Sorento that’s been paid off for 3 years. Only reason people are upside down on car loans is because they rolled a prior car loan balance when they traded it in.
I have a 8 year old Kia soul that I paid off years ago thanks to Dave.

If you can control your life like that, one credit card is a good thing to have. Without one, no plane tickets, no car rentals, no safety cushion for the occasional life taking a dump on you, get you over to next pay day.
I'm with you, though. The only debt I have is that monthly CC payoff and my property taxes.(I was lucky enough to inherit enough money to buy a small, solid house eight years ago. )

Not using credit cards as a crutch is very hard for many to understand cause they have never been able to handle their money. But people like you prove that people don't need credit cards, they just need to handle their money better and not spend more than they make.
I’m 57 and never paid credit card interest. My only debt is my home. I’ve taught my kids there there are needs and wants, and you never go into debts for wants only needs.

Debt consolidation can make things worse if you haven't resolved what caused you to go into debt in the first place. You will believe that everything is okay now and that you've got more wiggle room for spending.

I paid off my semi last month, I now have almost zero debt, I had little debt before the truck was paid off. I saw the light at the end of the tunnel before having this 1400 a week payment, even with that I was living on way less than I make since I knew what life is like without any major debt. I don’t see myself ever going back into debt, and I can’t believe I was one of those guys who made excuses to just keep borrowing. It’s a sickness and an addiction. I see friends and family who are basically drug addicts but for taking on debt. It truly changes your life when you start the process of detoxing from the stupid crap you try to justify needing, or at least you convince yourself you “need” it. It’s not much different than being a drug addict

And this is why DR is against HELOCs. This is also a strong persuasion to not just consolidate debt, because it’s out of sight out of mind + a false sense of having actually accomplished something.
