    Saying it's a hard choice for video for the GH6 vs. the Z9 is a testament to how good video is out of the GH6. Loved the review. Found it very fair and didn't disagree with any of it - as a GH6 owner.

    Normal excellent review. Been using the GH6 with 10-25 f1.7 and have been truly stunned by the 5.7k prores HQ. The way Panasonic implemented prores on this camera is something to behold. I disagree with the unbalanced view of the photo abilities of the GH6. The noisy shadows at low ISO’s was unduly high lighted. The GH6 is SIGNIFICANTLY better than the GH5 in photos. I would rarely take photos with the GH5…it just was not able to keep pace with my old D810. The GH6 is a different world with photos and comes close to the D810. It is a true photo/video hybrid.

    That intro! How many retakes did it take for you to stop cracking up?😂 When the GH6 gets that firmware update to be able to record to the SSD, how will we be able to externally power the camera? I have tried several dummy battery solutions which work but restrict the extreme video resolutions just as if using the older batteries, is there a dummy battery model number that you know that works unrestricted? 👍🏾🙏🏾

    With photography on the GH6, at first I thought the same thing, poor dynamic range and noisy in shows at lower ISOs and I was reluctant to use it for that and just used it only for video. After doing a lot of testing, I have gotten much better photography results with lower ISOs. The way I have achieved it is don't expose for the highlights and bring up the shadows in editing. That's how you can get more noise in the shadows. Instead, since the GH6 uses a 16-bit container for RAW photos, you can overexpose the image and bring down the highlights in editing and retain the highlight detail.
    I have been able to shoot RAW at low ISOs like 100 and 400, then overexpose just enough not to blow out the highlights. This brightens the shadows enough to reduce the shadow noise when you boost the shadows in editing. There is still a little bit of noise in the shadows, but it isn't bad at all. I don't know if the GH6 is actually using 16-bit colour or just a 16-bit container with a lower amount of colour bits, but whatever the case, the photos I have taken are better than the photos I have taken on the GH5, both in detail and better colour and I do prefer using it instead of my GH5 for photography.
    The High Res mode is hit and miss though even on a tripod. Sometimes I get very good results but other times I get artefacts in certain areas of the image and other parts look a bit soft, so I'd probably really only use it for static subjects in controlled lighting if I need a lot of detail but I have to test it in that mode to see if it works without artifacts in the image.

    • @DynamixWarePro
      @DynamixWarePro ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nicknie8782 It might be 12-bit RAW, I am not sure, but I think Sean from Panasonic said in a live stream they use 16-bit containers which is why you are able to overexpose the images and get the highlight detail back in editing when shooting RAW photos on the GH6.

    1:52 - Or better, DR Boost should have 3 options: On, Off, Preferred. Preferred (or just Auto) would enable the setting when it can be used (in frame rates of 60fps or less). In photography this behavior is automatic on the GH6.

    Had a g9, was waiting for the gh6, ended up going with an S5. Couldn't be happier... Especially with the f1. 8 primes, those are sooo light, theres no weight advantage in mft anymore. Still s5 has noticeably worse build quality than my old g9

    • @raksh9
      @raksh9 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The weight advantage of m43 comes with longer or wider lenses. Full frame standard primes are roughly the same weight or slightly less if counting the f1.2 m43 primes, but there is no 70-200 that is as small as the Panasonic 35-100, and the full frame teles or wides are huge in comparison.

      @@raksh9 true, but shooting 100mm on mft isnt equivalent to shooting 200mm on ff. People deal with the price and bulk penalty for a reason. Take a look at the Panasonic S5 real actual tested 12.1 stops of usable clean dynamic range (the A7S3 is 12.6) and shoots RAW video to a ninja V . In my opinion the S5 is as good or better than the A7s3 in "realistic" low light settings (less noise on the S5). I have the A7S3 and like the S5 more. IMHO the GH series are not great photo cameras they suck in low light ( I have the GH5). The photos from the S5 are on another level compared to my A7III (I have that one too). Right now the S5 with the kit lens is cheaper than either Sony or the GH6. However, if you settle on the Sony you won't be sad they are great. I just like the results from the S5 more. And I like the video from my GH5 more then the A7III. I never use the A7III for video

    I totally disagree about the GH6 as a not-so-good photography camera! It takes GREAT photos! Yeah, maybe not at ISO 100 but then go to 200 or 400 where the MFT sensors like it better! I have always heard you shouldn't run MFT sensors at very low or very high ISOs! Hell, everything has limits and this is nothing new with MFT sensors! The fact is I have the G9 and the GH6 and thinking about getting rid of the G9 because the GH6 TAKES BETTER PICTURES than the G9! But, the G9 is still a great stills cam or a great B or C-cam!
    As fas a video goes on the GH6, everything else pales in comparison! One of my many favorite new features is being able to zoom in to pull focus while recording! Game changer for my old eyes
    I have learned to love Panasonic again!

    Tempting, but I'm still probably leaning towards the S5 tbh... I could care less about AF since I use 99.9% adapted manual lenses anyway so that's really not an issue as far as I'm concerned. The DR and noise floor in high ISO's are what's important to me. And I have to say sharpness and detail, but I do mainly corporate videos, often in poorly lit conditions, and businesses tend to demand sharp, noise-free images for some reason.

      I don't think the S5 is that noticeably better at high iso noise performance than the GH6, or even the GH5II with appropriate lenses. and i doubt very much most businesses will be able to tell about the marginal difference to the noise in the shadows, especially when they dont have a side by side comparison with something that is slightly better.
      you can just say you want the S5 bc it is cheaper. there is nothing wrong with that.
      but the GH6 would be the superior video camera between it and the S5.

As a professional cameraman - who has been operating Arri cameras for the last 10 years and has just picked up the GH6 today - for purely using it for capturing video - is all I have to worry about shooting video at 25 frames per second (PAL) - and using the camera in the improved dynamic range mode (setting ISO to 2000) - keeping the shutter speed to 1/50th - and then controlling exposure like a regular video camera? I have ordered a variable ND so I can keep the light out and hopefully the camera to around F5 - and judge exposure via the wave form monitor - keeping everything below 75ise. Does this sound about right, or am I missing something? I have a trip this weekend and would like to give it a spin. thanks in advance and keep up the great work on this crazy but fun and informative channel!

    I am loving what I see with the GH6 but while I want the GH6. my head is telling me to save some money and get the GH5 M2 since my biggest need is full anamorphic support, and the GH5 M2 has the advantage of 4K/6K modes. But then the 4K 120 on the GH6 is a big deal… as always, there is rarely a clear cut decision to make.

    • @michaelkupfer3723

    • @artistjoh
      @artistjoh 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@michaelkupfer3723 The GH6 lacks nothing in anamorphic support, and GH5 M2 and GH6 are very similar in that regard, and since my main interest is the anamorphic support then I should save some money and get the GH5 M2. However, for me, there is also the live streaming aspect, which the GH5 M2 does, but the GH6 does not, and the 4k/6K Photo which is not on the GH6.
      So there are some good reasons for some of us the choose the GH5 M2 over the GH6. Your usage needs may prefer the Gh6, and you will have first rate anamorphic support, plus 4 channel audio, which is really sweet and really useful, and I love that audio button on the top.

    Just a little request for the reviews in the future, can you add a little segment on the video streaming capabilities of cameras, with streaming being really big I would like to see video quality comparison of streaming features, the GH6 can stream video over IP supposedly with a usb-c to ethernet adapter but no channel has even mentioned that feature. Can you output the image to HDMI when streaming over IP, is it possible to record while streaming... is it possible to do all three?? also PC/mobile management systems for brands and so on.
    If you couldn't guess by the comment live video production is a thing i'm really interested in, and having light small and affordable camera with great image quality is awesome.

      Noisy? They are sensitive, lower the gain in camera to like -12db or whatever is best for your microphone.
      If you have noise in your recordings, its operator fault for not knowing the camera, Panasonic even suggests lowering gain in manual LOL depending on the mic you have.
      Same is true even for professional recording equipment, your 3.5mm microphones are by design made to be sensitive and give a high output hence the need to lower gain in camera or audio equipment.
      But microphones that require phantom power tend to be less sensitive as they use power to boost.

    • @MoronMonkeyPro
      @MoronMonkeyPro 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's based on how ISO readouts are done - think of an ISO like a Gain (which is what it's called on proper video cameras). A middle value Gain value will give you the most range both above it (highlights) and shadows (below it). If you are stepping outside of that intended gain, it artificially is reading out and creating shadows it technically can't see. Thus, more noise and artifacting.
      My suspicions are this sensor was specifically created to be used in the boost function almost exclusively, because when it's not doing a readout of both at the lowest ISO's, (800 for Standard and 2000 for VLOG, both in boost mode), it's reading outside of it's intended DR area.

    Panasonic has always been doing weird things with their sensors. Panasonic GH2 weird banding line when filming at ISO 800. Panasonic G9 pushing the shows in stills mode at lower ISO you get purple shadows. But the good thing about Panasonic is they are contrast detection only so no weird phase detection artifacts like Olympus.
    I have pushed shadows on my older Olympus cameras like the Olympus OMD E-M1ii at ISO 200 and 400 and the can lift shadows very good. But I have gotten artifacts because of phase detection with Olympus E-M1ii when the sun is low and being snooted in and there are trees its really bad. I had it happen twice at weddings.

    *Hey guys, thanks for this review. I am seriously considering purchasing a Lumix GH6 camera, but I'm having somewhat of a difficult time in my research obtaining enough review footage from this camera at the near 6K resolution settings ! I'm left sort of scratching my head trying to understand exactly why so many folks on TH-cam, who are reviewing this camera, want to concentrate on what this 6K capable camera can do in 4K, almost completely to the exlusion of any real testing out of the GH6's top resolution at its open gate 5.8K setting ? In other words, I don't want to buy a 6K capable resolution camera, just so I can shoot in 4K all day long. Does this make any sense ? I see 4K as a delivery format - Sort of the new 1080p, while wanting to acquire video images at higher resolutions, so I can do reframes, push-ins, and post camera moves to enhance my overal production look being a one man band sort of shooter. From the very little footage I have seen from the GH6 in both 5.7K ProRes, and Open Gate 5.8K ProRes HQ and in the H.265 setting, the images looked utterly astounding for a micro-four-thirds sensored camera ! 👌👌👌*

    What specs of computer need for handling 5.7k or 6k video?
    I did get answer from some other video reply but need more to confirm it.
    Also, can anyone give me a good reason why we still need Full Frame sensor 4k camera since we have the 5.7k or 6k 4/3 sensor camera give solid result other than the sensor size reason?

      1. Dell UP2718Q 27 inch 4K color calibrated monitor
      2. MSI Z690 Tomahawk Motherboard - I got it since it uses DDR4 and DDR5 memory is much more expensive
      3. Intel Core i7-12700K 3.6Ghz and Arctic freezer CPU cooler.
      4. Corsair Vengeance 64BG DDR4 3200Mhz RAM (I think 128GB might be better)

      6. x3 1TB 510 FireCuda Nvme SSDs and x1 500GB Nvme

      I also have x2 10TB Seagate External Hard drives and x2 5TB Seagate External Hard Drives where I store the videos on but I am going to upgrade to more capacity, better and faster storage so I can edit videos faster as those drives are using USB 2.0 and are not really fast enough for editing video.
