My citroen xsara1.4 petrol years 2004 after running out of petrol on motorway i call AA break down recoveri was tow home 1miles only things working engine crank, central locked work, hazard work, no dashboard ignition or light every things off,all fuse box and fuse okay before tow every things work all connection and earth wire check had few electric diagnostics man they could not understand??
@@ScannerDanner analogous to bypassing the AC relay and radiator relay, can the car be start without key inserted or removed and bypassing the starter relay with jumpers, and power feed the pin 87 of the relay straight from battery positive??? If engine is RUNNING, then can I drive without keys inserted??
Saying piece of shit Hyundai was incorrect....a simple fault and I bet the car has done close to 200 000km already. Most starters that I know has the same wiring on the starter motor.
You are a very good teacher, mostly car owner just replaces the starter, even a new starter is replaced, the car will not start by having a connection problem. Thanks for a wonderful teaching.

I was the same way. I'm not one to easily watch videos or read threads and be in a head state to retain the provided information. The way this man taught through this video kept me so focused and on the same path as him, no backtracking to hear something I didn't catch because I wasn't fully paying attention or any of that.
The presenter is an excellent teacher. Doesn't BS, tells you when he is loose with terminology, and corrects it in real time. Diagnosed the problem, saves replacing the starter for the customer, but doesn't shy away from a fair cost to the customer.

I was a industrial electrician and always using multimeter for trouble shooting and have been wondering for many years about why auto mechanics using testers, now I understand, the main reason is there is no main breaker or switch on cars, so when checking continuity the testers got the advantages.
I went to trade school to become a mechanic in the 80’s. The electrical portion of training was my worst and I just didn’t like it. I didn’t stay in the field for the long run but still do repairs for myself. Watching your videos really gets me interested. I love watching these videos and wish I had learned from someone like you. NOW I am learning.
I got this problem while parked on the road ,did not even finished watching the vid and i was able to do a bypass with a piece of wire and got my car started to move it off the road to my parking spot to work on it when the sun comes up .......this video is like CRAZY COOL!!!!! really learned a whole lot .Thanks a lot !!!!!
stranded on the side of the road in the same gen elantra about 3hrs ago. got it towed home and within 25min it was fixed thanks to your video. went through the same trouble shooting with the battery, relay, and starter smacking while i was on the side of the road. turns out it was literally the same issue. i reached down and wiggled the wire while my brother in law worked the key and it started to crank until i stopped fiddling with the wire. i crimped a new female spade connector on there and it's good as new. ... at least until it happens again. then at that point im just gonna replace the entire wire .
Mr Paul!!! It's currently 2333 here in the pacific northwest and I had the same issue! Car exterior and interior lights would turn on, but no crank. I stumbled upon your video and immediately got to work. I started at the starter and all was well. I ended up at the fuse box where I swapped the starter fuse with the horn fuse AND WHAM... it was able to start! Turns out it was just a dead fuse. I'm so thankful for your content. A thousand times thank you and may you continue to bless others with your work. :)

I'm currently trying to figure out if I got power from my fuel pump relay in my 2010 tiguan after a serpentine belt ripped off and split my oil pressure sensor and hit coolant hoses or possibly other wires near it. I got a problem at terminal 30 and tryna figure out where that is.
if there is no power to the relay. Than the pump will not pressure up. Serpentine belt flew off because a pull has seezed up.. Bad battery will cause a no crank no start. Without any codes. Try crank engine then leave battery with charge. Left in it . over night Next morning put key in start position watch dash console. If gauges do crazy extremes. Thats a bad battery. Most of all do a fab key test. . magnet in key housing talks to ignition switch FM receiver without any battery power. Uf key has been damaged. Order you a new
@@stephenfallis9374 I was gonna change my serpentine belt because i had a tear on it 2 weeks ago but had bad turf toe so it wasn't in my head to inspect it and then change it. Then the belt ripped apart from just about maybe a 3 cm tear and then it stretched, because of carelessness. I drove maybe about half an hour to pick up breakfast before it ripped when I smelled burnt rubber but didn't noticed shaking or steering troubles because the car steering is electronic and not connected with the belt. I had p0011 and p0341 codes but fixed it and it still wont crank. I don't wanna take it to a shop because in my head, I feel like it's 1 thing I'm missing and it will start. I just gotta figure if it's electrical or parts causing the issues.

I'm glad I saw this! May be the issue with my dad's car. I'm not a mechanic but have a great deal of experience and mechanical aptitude to do the job correctly. I'm working on a Windstar now that a local well-known reputable shop couldn't fix! There's a lot of part changers out there.

yeah man there's so many ppl missing out on this its crazy, it's basically free money for anyone willing to put in the time to learn. I've gotten to where I literally watch for entertainment lol I find myself trying to guess where the diag is going next and pause the video to play out all the possibilities in my head as if I were doing it. kind of like the thought experiments Einstein did, not that I'm anywhere near as brilliant as Einstein, it's just fun to practice forward thinking in the landscape of your mind, kind of like mental chess but with powers, grounds, loads, and controls instead of pawns, rooks, knights and bishops. lol I love it.

Mr. Danner, thank you very much for your life-like training videos. You have excellent +++ troubleshooting skills, very valuable for beginners and professionals. Troubleshooting this kinda problems is extremely difficult, but you explained it in a very easy to understand way and that's double credit for you. Not even the person who troubleshot that problem before had the ability to solve that issue, they thought that replacing relays was the solution, but as you said, even of they were able to fix that problem by replacing the crank relay, the issue will come back. Intermitten issues are the worst to troubleshoot, but you have an excellent method to come down to a root cause. Do not pay attention to those "big-mouths" that only criticize without method, those only talk because they have mouth... Please keep up the good work with your technical videos. God bless!

You are pretty good! I've been repairing these newer vehicles for years. Like older cars better, physical items are becoming harder to access . Had the same problem on a chevy hhr, Bad connection at the solenoid wire. Too many unnecessary electronics these days. THANKS-
Excellent video! The "relay swappers" would have throwed a new fuse box and relay on. Better to spend an extra 15 minutes verifying the problem instead of replacing the wrong part. Thanks Paul for another excellent video.
Not before they would have replaced the battery, starter, alternator, ignition switch, park/neutral switch, ignition switch a 2nd time, battery power and ground cables, and battery a 2nd time...just to be sure.
First time watching one of your videos, have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. I'm an old retired master mason that doesn't like to waste one second of my, or anyone else's time (just a get the damn job done the best way possible and be extremely efficient with the time taken to do the/any job/repair/task at hand.. Very very good work. Surprisingly I had exactly same problem with my Hyundai elite i 20 and at the time I was in very dens and wild forest and it was time to go back home 80 km from spot. Fortunately I use to keep some tools and wires etc in my car I know little about car mechanism and wiring, relay layout shown on cover gave me little clue and I managed to start the car. After coming to nearby town one technician fixed one additional push button and I continued further travel to home. That push button is still there. Now your video will definitely help me to restore original status of my car,. Thanks for posting this video.
Fuse box corrosion, very common problem in multiple vehicles. I've swapped them out with others took em apart cleaning the contacts and weld points on the bread board bottoms good to go.

I can appreciate the beginning of the video... Its creating a real life scenario of being away from the house with limited tools. These simple healight/dome light checks while cranking and tapping of starter are valuable checks without tools. Additionally the no wire diagram checks by knowing a simple circuit is also well... Greeeeat 🐯.
This is such an excellent video. I have a 2014 Dodge Avenger that was having slow starts about 2 months ago. I go to O'Reilly to get the battery tested, and they told me that I was losing voltage during the crank. The car would start right away at times, but then it would slow start, especially if I was making start and stop short trips to multiple places within an hour's time. But for a solid month, I had no issues at all, regardless of how I drove the car. Then about a week ago, I noticed the slow starting again. The next day, it was really hesitating to crank, but it started up. On the last start up, it cranked as slow as it ever had, but started after about 4 seconds. Now, it's simply 1 click, with no crank at all. I changed the battery out, but still only hear the 1 click. I am smelling something burning, like a wire, coming from the engine area where the starter is, whenever I try to crank it up. It may be coming from the starter solenoid wire. Tomorrow, I'll try to find the wire going to the starter solenoid ( even though I can't even see the starter because it's so buried in the middle of the engine )

I'm 42 years old, took some basic auto mechanics in high school and have been working on my own cars as well as family cars my entire life. Like many others I've used youtube many times for help or ideas when stuck, but I've literally NEVER watched a video with a better "teacher" as well as better instruction. Wow good video im having the same problem, lol just changed the starter still no joy ,I checked the relay, no corrosion so my next step is wich I should of done first is check the control wire to starter as looking now the copper is GREEN so I guessing that's my problem. Still no joy does any one have any ideas ? When trying to crank it the A.B.S light flashes and clicks. The starter turns when u put a live straight from the battery to the starter. When I brought the freelander 1.8 petrol the bloke I brought it off said it need s a crank shaft sensor as it jolts abit in 3rd and every now and when idling does any one know if this could be the problem? I'm thinking it could be the immobiliser? Apparently it did have a engine swap as the old engine had head gasket problem. Thanks

Wow! Just watched this video after my daughter called and said she had a similar issue (intermittent no crank) with her 2007 Elantra and she just spent $500 to replace the alternator and still the same issue. She has taken it back to the shop for them to fix it right and probably will not get her money (nor the old alternator) back. I am very leery about having them do anything further as it seems like a totally shady, totally off-base diagnosis to replace an alternator for a starting problem, especially before doing a lot of other things like what is covered in this video. I'm going to talk to them in the morning and will definitely ask if they have checked the relay wiring. Thanks for the video and just letting you know it is still helping people many years later.
Wow! So thorough and informative 👍 My brother’s Accord was involved in a fender bender last year and he had similar starting issues. Turned out that a wire in the harness was broken near the front end due to the accident which was causing intermittent starts. Once repaired it was all good 🤙

Same here. I thought the solenoid connector would be the prime culprit as its more exposed to the elements. The relay looked bad too though and would have played up at some point in time.
An excellent teacher and true to yourself, your abilities, and your job as a technician. I completely understand what you were saying when you talked about the job being a money maker and how to sell it because I do “piece rate” or “flat rate” work as well. I am a lead sunroom installer for Champion and you simply mean that the amount of time spent both on the diag and repair which as you stated is about an hour and a half would net you about 3 or 4 hours of very good hourly pay and if you had 4 or 5 of those types of Diagnosis and repairs in one day all lined up you would be very happy with the money and the customer would be happy with the repair and the amount they spent so everyone walks away happy! It’s not greed, it’s the truth for people who do piece work. You cannot throw things together in an all inclusive repair and check engine light diagnosis because then you end up working for free and you end up broke. Honesty is the key! Awesome video Paul. @@ScannerDanner i have a question for you also. I still have a 1 car that beeds to be fixed (ford mondeo mk2 year 2000). Issue is, i was driving from work and car completely cut off all power and keeps blowing fuse everytime i put new one in. Its F40 fuse and i was watchin fuse box diagram and its ignition switch, light switch (headlights / fog lamp. Any idea what could be causing this issue? Have been trying to search rupped wires with no luck.

Just seeing this video and just had a similar (but different cause) problem on an '05 Toyota Camry... Debugged and had decided it was the starter; had a good signal coming down to it when the key was turned to start position... Took the starter to O'Reily's and they tested it for me - PASSED all the test! What! Took it back, put it back in the car (pretty easy on the 2.4L) and nothing... After checking the signal again I was thinking maybe that signal wire wasn't carrying enough current??? Took starter back out, hot wired it on my tailgate of my truck with a known good battery - nothing! Went back to O'Reily's and this time it tested bad twice! Anyway, after new starter, I'm good to go... Lesson is these starters may work partially and then finally die... Thanks for all you do to help the DIYers out here.

Well, this time I didn't bother reading ... cuz this time it's me doin it. ypur test light should light when when it is connected to B+ and the solenoid as the solenoid has a low resistance, incandescent test lights are incredibly valuable

I’ve watched the whole video and learned a lot of things! I have the same problem on my 2013 rav4. Bought a new battery and new starter as per mechanics advice. Got the car running in a week then its dead again! No crank no nothing...it all started after they change the transmission main seal. The car ran for a week then this problem keeps coming back. Car is dead no crank,but if the car seats for like an hour it would start again...the mechanic(Conrad’s shop in Ohio) is totally lost right now...BTW,another new subscriber here! Intermittents are the most difficult thing we as techs have to deal with. If you've taken it to a shop and they were not able to duplicate the symptom, they're definitely not going to fix it. You absolutely have to do your tests in that circuit when it is NOT cranking. Otherwise it is just a guessing game. Thanks and good luck!
at 18:28 Exactly right in I.T. when a person tells me the computer won't start up and then another tech looks at the job and says "oh Dude, that's the power supply, replace the Power supply" hehe well.. yeah. maybe but I DON'T CARE WHAT IT IS , Even it happens to be something as simple as the Powerboard is not working or the Wall Point isn't switched on or even the PSU is faulty TROUBLESHOOTING LOGICALLY AND CORRECTLY EVERY SINGLE TIME IS KEY otherwise you are just taking stabs in the dark and even if you take a stab in the dark and ACCIDENTALLY pick up on another issue, that issue would lead you down a different road of troubleshooting and waste an hour or so of your time Troubleshooting Effectively is key

Your the man bro. Mechanics cant mess with u on youtube. I got this problem i beat the starter chamge the relays bought new starter my wire hangs amd gets wet. All the time I have no plastic on the bottom. To protect it I swear this is it 250
A relay is nothing but a contactor. You have a line side feed heavy ga wire. A load side heavy ga wire. Then a signal ground. Then the source to ground that closes the replay... That is how it works. This allows you to buy relays to fit the size of your line and load side. The signal\source can be a 18 ga-22 ga wire. As all it does is close the relay contacts inside the relay. ie the ignition switch. Your line-load side carries the amps. That the relay is rated to handle.... This is why I use dielectric grease on connections open to water. I pack the rear open end and the male of female end.. That stops this shit....
Man I love you. I was getting frustrated with a 07 kia sedona and for some reason i kept thinking it was the security relay which is soldered in because it was an emergency situation as we didnt have another vehicle but after watching this I went back to basics and had the same exact issue as this car.

My citroen xsara1.4 petrol years 2004 after running out of petrol on motorway i call AA break down recoveri was tow home 1miles only things working engine crank, central locked work, hazard work, no dashboard ignition or light every things off,all fuse box and fuse okay before tow every things work all connection and earth wire check had few electric diagnostics man they could not understand??

Most starters that I know has the same wiring on the starter motor.

I was the same way. I'm not one to easily watch videos or read threads and be in a head state to retain the provided information. The way this man taught through this video kept me so focused and on the same path as him, no backtracking to hear something I didn't catch because I wasn't fully paying attention or any of that.

The presenter is an excellent teacher. Doesn't BS, tells you when he is loose with terminology, and corrects it in real time. Diagnosed the problem, saves replacing the starter for the customer, but doesn't shy away from a fair cost to the customer.
Its probably not economically feasible to not replace the starter since you must fix the connection in the process of starter replacement.

I was a industrial electrician and always using multimeter for trouble shooting and have been wondering for many years about why auto mechanics using testers, now I understand, the main reason is there is no main breaker or switch on cars, so when checking continuity the testers got the advantages.

I went to trade school to become a mechanic in the 80’s. The electrical portion of training was my worst and I just didn’t like it. I didn’t stay in the field for the long run but still do repairs for myself.

I got this problem while parked on the road ,did not even finished watching the vid and i was able to do a bypass with a piece of wire and got my car started to move it off the road to my parking spot to work on it when the sun comes up .......this video is like CRAZY COOL!!!!! really learned a whole lot .Thanks a lot !!!!!
stranded on the side of the road in the same gen elantra about 3hrs ago. got it towed home and within 25min it was fixed thanks to your video. went through the same trouble shooting with the battery, relay, and starter smacking while i was on the side of the road. turns out it was literally the same issue. i reached down and wiggled the wire while my brother in law worked the key and it started to crank until i stopped fiddling with the wire. i crimped a new female spade connector on there and it's good as new. ... at least until it happens again. then at that point im just gonna replace the entire wire .
this should be the only no start, no crank, diagnosis video on the web. if id have seen this earlier it would have saved me a lot of money.
Mr Paul!!! It's currently 2333 here in the pacific northwest and I had the same issue! Car exterior and interior lights would turn on, but no crank. I stumbled upon your video and immediately got to work. I started at the starter and all was well. I ended up at the fuse box where I swapped the starter fuse with the horn fuse AND WHAM... it was able to start! Turns out it was just a dead fuse. I'm so thankful for your content. A thousand times thank you and may you continue to bless others with your work. :)

I’ve been watching videos and looking at forum posts for 4 days trying to figure out what could be the possible reason for my car having a no crank issue. I'm currently trying to figure out if I got power from my fuel pump relay in my 2010 tiguan after a serpentine belt ripped off and split my oil pressure sensor and hit coolant hoses or possibly other wires near it. I got a problem at terminal 30 and tryna figure out where that is.
if there is no power to the relay. Than the pump will not pressure up. Serpentine belt flew off because a pull has seezed up.. Bad battery will cause a no crank no start. Without any codes. Try crank engine then leave battery with charge. Left in it . over night
Next morning put key in start position watch dash console. If gauges do crazy extremes. Thats a bad battery. Most of all do a fab key test. . magnet in key housing talks to ignition switch FM receiver without any battery power. Uf key has been damaged. Order you a new
@@stephenfallis9374 I was gonna change my serpentine belt because i had a tear on it 2 weeks ago but had bad turf toe so it wasn't in my head to inspect it and then change it. Then the belt ripped apart from just about maybe a 3 cm tear and then it stretched, because of carelessness. I drove maybe about half an hour to pick up breakfast before it ripped when I smelled burnt rubber but didn't noticed shaking or steering troubles because the car steering is electronic and not connected with the belt. I had p0011 and p0341 codes but fixed it and it still wont crank. I don't wanna take it to a shop because in my head, I feel like it's 1 thing I'm missing and it will start. I just gotta figure if it's electrical or parts causing the issues.
As a retired golf course supt (39 years) I know a real mechanic when I see one. This guy is the ticket.

yeah man there's so many ppl missing out on this its crazy, it's basically free money for anyone willing to put in the time to learn. I've gotten to where I literally watch for entertainment lol I find myself trying to guess where the diag is going next and pause the video to play out all the possibilities in my head as if I were doing it. kind of like the thought experiments Einstein did, not that I'm anywhere near as brilliant as Einstein, it's just fun to practice forward thinking in the landscape of your mind, kind of like mental chess but with powers, grounds, loads, and controls instead of pawns, rooks, knights and bishops. lol I love it.

Troubleshooting this kinda problems is extremely difficult, but you explained it in a very easy to understand way and that's double credit for you.
Not even the person who troubleshot that problem before had the ability to solve that issue, they thought that replacing relays was the solution, but as you said, even of they were able to fix that problem by replacing the crank relay, the issue will come back. Intermitten issues are the worst to troubleshoot, but you have an excellent method to come down to a root cause.
Do not pay attention to those "big-mouths" that only criticize without method, those only talk because they have mouth...

I've watched loads of auto repair videos on TH-cam for multiple different vehicles (I'm far from a mechanic but I'm also cheap and don't want to foot the dealership bills for maintenance) and this is by far the best explanation of what you're doing and why you're doing it that I have ever seen. You are pretty good! I've been repairing these newer vehicles for years. Like older cars better, physical items are becoming harder to access . Had the same problem on a chevy hhr, Bad connection at the solenoid wire. Too many unnecessary electronics these days. THANKS-
Excellent video! The "relay swappers" would have throwed a new fuse box and relay on. Better to spend an extra 15 minutes verifying the problem instead of replacing the wrong part. Thanks Paul for another excellent video.

Not before they would have replaced the battery, starter, alternator, ignition switch, park/neutral switch, ignition switch a 2nd time, battery power and ground cables, and battery a 2nd time...just to be sure.

Very very good work. Surprisingly I had exactly same problem with my Hyundai elite i 20 and at the time I was in very dens and wild forest and it was time to go back home 80 km from spot. Fortunately I use to keep some tools and wires etc in my car I know little about car mechanism and wiring, relay layout shown on cover gave me little clue and I managed to start the car. After coming to nearby town one technician fixed one additional push button and I continued further travel to home. That push button is still there. Now your video will definitely help me to restore original status of my car,. Thanks for posting this video.
Fuse box corrosion, very common problem in multiple vehicles. I've swapped them out with others took em apart cleaning the contacts and weld points on the bread board bottoms good to go.

I can appreciate the beginning of the video... Its creating a real life scenario of being away from the house with limited tools. These simple healight/dome light checks while cranking and tapping of starter are valuable checks without tools. Additionally the no wire diagram checks by knowing a simple circuit is also well... This is such an excellent video. I have a 2014 Dodge Avenger that was having slow starts about 2 months ago. I go to O'Reilly to get the battery tested, and they told me that I was losing voltage during the crank. The car would start right away at times, but then it would slow start, especially if I was making start and stop short trips to multiple places within an hour's time. But for a solid month, I had no issues at all, regardless of how I drove the car.
Then about a week ago, I noticed the slow starting again. The next day, it was really hesitating to crank, but it started up. On the last start up, it cranked as slow as it ever had, but started after about 4 seconds. Now, it's simply 1 click, with no crank at all.
I changed the battery out, but still only hear the 1 click. I am smelling something burning, like a wire, coming from the engine area where the starter is, whenever I try to crank it up. It may be coming from the starter solenoid wire. Tomorrow, I'll try to find the wire going to the starter solenoid ( even though I can't even see the starter because it's so buried in the middle of the engine )

I'm 42 years old, took some basic auto mechanics in high school and have been working on my own cars as well as family cars my entire life. Like many others I've used youtube many times for help or ideas when stuck, but I've literally NEVER watched a video with a better "teacher" as well as better instruction. Wow good video im having the same problem, lol just changed the starter still no joy ,I checked the relay, no corrosion so my next step is wich I should of done first is check the control wire to starter as looking now the copper is GREEN so I guessing that's my problem. Still no joy does any one have any ideas ? When trying to crank it the A.B.S light flashes and clicks. The starter turns when u put a live straight from the battery to the starter. When I brought the freelander 1.8 petrol the bloke I brought it off said it need s a crank shaft sensor as it jolts abit in 3rd and every now and when idling does any one know if this could be the problem? I'm thinking it could be the immobiliser? Apparently it did have a engine swap as the old engine had head gasket problem. Thanks

Wow! Just watched this video after my daughter called and said she had a similar issue (intermittent no crank) with her 2007 Elantra and she just spent $500 to replace the alternator and still the same issue. She has taken it back to the shop for them to fix it right and probably will not get her money (nor the old alternator) back. I am very leery about having them do anything further as it seems like a totally shady, totally off-base diagnosis to replace an alternator for a starting problem, especially before doing a lot of other things like what is covered in this video. I'm going to talk to them in the morning and will definitely ask if they have checked the relay wiring. Thanks for the video and just letting you know it is still helping people many years later.

Wow! So thorough and informative 👍 My brother’s Accord was involved in a fender bender last year and he had similar starting issues. Turned out that a wire in the harness was broken near the front end due to the accident which was causing intermittent starts. Once repaired it was all good 🤙

Same here. I thought the solenoid connector would be the prime culprit as its more exposed to the elements. The relay looked bad too though and would have played up at some point in time.

An excellent teacher and true to yourself, your abilities, and your job as a technician. I completely understand what you were saying when you talked about the job being a money maker and how to sell it because I do “piece rate” or “flat rate” work as well. I am a lead sunroom installer for Champion and you simply mean that the amount of time spent both on the diag and repair which as you stated is about an hour and a half would net you about 3 or 4 hours of very good hourly pay and if you had 4 or 5 of those types of Diagnosis and repairs in one day all lined up you would be very happy with the money and the customer would be happy with the repair and the amount they spent so everyone walks away happy! It’s not greed, it’s the truth for people who do piece work. You cannot throw things together in an all inclusive repair and check engine light diagnosis because then you end up working for free and you end up broke. Honesty is the key! Awesome video Paul. I am a premium subscriber and all together I’ve been watching your you tube videos for 2 years and a premium member for the last 5 months of those 2 years and when I get home from building sunrooms all day, I diagnose/repair cars and I’ve built 3 engines and you were a major part of making that happen with your step by step diagnostic thought process and your ability to teach others that same process, I went from knowing nothing about cars 2 years ago to advanced electrical and mechanical diagnostics and Those engines I built which are all still healthy today. @@ScannerDanner i have a question for you also. I still have a 1 car that beeds to be fixed (ford mondeo mk2 year 2000). Issue is, i was driving from work and car completely cut off all power and keeps blowing fuse everytime i put new one in. Its F40 fuse and i was watchin fuse box diagram and its ignition switch, light switch (headlights / fog lamp. Any idea what could be causing this issue? Have been trying to search rupped wires with no luck.

Just seeing this video and just had a similar (but different cause) problem on an '05 Toyota Camry... Debugged and had decided it was the starter; had a good signal coming down to it when the key was turned to start position... Took the starter to O'Reily's and they tested it for me - PASSED all the test! What! Took it back, put it back in the car (pretty easy on the 2.4L) and nothing... After checking the signal again I was thinking maybe that signal wire wasn't carrying enough current??? Took starter back out, hot wired it on my tailgate of my truck with a known good battery - nothing! Went back to O'Reily's and this time it tested bad twice! Anyway, after new starter, I'm good to go... Lesson is these starters may work partially and then finally die... Thanks for all you do to help the DIYers out here.

all mechanical troubleshooting videos with someone whose somewhat knowledgeable, I'm destined to find comments that glorify the mechanic simply because they know a volt meter, but fail to check a no start with a relay switch. Well, this time I didn't bother reading ... cuz this time it's me doin it. I have a technician as a friend and been around quite a few mechanics in my time, so when I say this, please know, that I know you know and I hope you know technicians like you are hard to find and I appreciate what you know. you know your stuff and you know more than 99% of the rest I've seen - aside from jokes, you are on par with my buddy. ypur test light should light when when it is connected to B+ and the solenoid as the solenoid has a low resistance, incandescent test lights are incredibly valuable

I’ve watched the whole video and learned a lot of things! I have the same problem on my 2013 rav4. Bought a new battery and new starter as per mechanics advice. Got the car running in a week then its dead again! No crank no nothing...it all started after they change the transmission main seal. The car ran for a week then this problem keeps coming back. Car is dead no crank,but if the car seats for like an hour it would start again...the mechanic(Conrad’s shop in Ohio) is totally lost right now...BTW,another new subscriber here! Awesome and helpfull video!👍
Intermittents are the most difficult thing we as techs have to deal with. If you've taken it to a shop and they were not able to duplicate the symptom, they're definitely not going to fix it. You absolutely have to do your tests in that circuit when it is NOT cranking. Otherwise it is just a guessing game. Thanks and good luck!

Even it happens to be something as simple as the Powerboard is not working or the Wall Point isn't switched on or even the PSU is faulty
TROUBLESHOOTING LOGICALLY AND CORRECTLY EVERY SINGLE TIME IS KEY
otherwise you are just taking stabs in the dark
and even if you take a stab in the dark and ACCIDENTALLY pick up on another issue,
that issue would lead you down a different road of troubleshooting and waste an hour or so of your time

Having this exact problem with my 04 Dodge Ram 1500. Brand new battery, started like a champ the night before, next morning, not even a click-Will for sure check the wiring and electrical before I proceed with anything else. Thanks for the video, so informative!
I just replaced my clutch and everything went in well however now the car doesn't start. I checked the battery and the starter and both seem ok .I came across you looking for a solution but I'm glad I did,Great vid

@Scannerdanner why not use the flat pin fuse adapter for the powerprobe? It is designed not to spread the terminals and losen them.
I never pushed the tip of either the power probe or the test light into the terminal itself. It was wide open. Make sense? I didn't need it.

Your the man bro. Mechanics cant mess with u on youtube. I got this problem i beat the starter chamge the relays bought new starter my wire hangs amd gets wet. All the time I have no plastic on the bottom. To protect it I swear this is it

A relay is nothing but a contactor. You have a line side feed heavy ga wire. A load side heavy ga wire. Then a signal ground. Then the source to ground that closes the replay... That is how it works. This allows you to buy relays to fit the size of your line and load side. The signal\source can be a 18 ga-22 ga wire. As all it does is close the relay contacts inside the relay. ie the ignition switch. Your line-load side carries the amps. That the relay is rated to handle....
This is why I use dielectric grease on connections open to water. I pack the rear open end and the male of female end.. That stops this shit....
Leave the end of your test light bent, it helps when you have hard to reach fuses that you have to get at from the side. E.g. BMW

I was getting frustrated with a 07 kia sedona and for some reason i kept thinking it was the security relay which is soldered in because it was an emergency situation as we didnt have another vehicle but after watching this I went back to basics and had the same exact issue as this car.
