I confirmed (using the battery check up steps you mentioned) that the battery and terminals were good. I took my car to a friend's workshop. You are educational, careful and thoughtful in your choice of words and use of grammer and your very precise with your your method of educating. Huge props. I learned lots. God bless you
Thank you so much for this primer on narrowing down the possible causes for an engine not cranking/not starting. Love your common sense approach- "Do the simple things first!"...

Good job! I just had to walk a friend through everything you did over the phone. Wish I would have known about this video! Great work. You are providing a wonderful public service.
You are a true mechanic. Thank you for simplifying the trouble shooting procedure. You should do a second part on the ignition switch and neutral safety.
You're by far the best on youtube, best technician/master mechanic and the best teacher. You help out sooo many people with solving their car problems saving them money, but at the same time you impart us with knowledge skills and confidence. That's called impact. Thanks for taking the time to do what you do and share your knowledge, skills and wisdom, overall improving people's lives.
Thank you. Excellent video. Highly informative, very well explained, has links to additional information if you need them but doesn't over explain or confuse when you don't. This gentleman explains car electrical issues better than anyone else I have seen on TH-cam. Thank you very much, I really appreciate you and I really learned a lot here.
Thank you so much! As im sitting in my garage with dust and grease on my hands, my car is now fixed and I don't have to worry about getting to school or anything else! Thank you so much for this video!
I have a basic 1999 Toyota Tacoma manual 5 speed. It is not starting. No crank and no fire. Nothing! No instrument lights on when I turn the key. The headlights nor the interior dash can light goes on. I have fully charged the battery. I have checked the battery bolts, reads 12.6. I confirmed the battery cables are fully connected and tighten. I repaired a 9” thin black wire that was barely connected to the main NEG battery cable and connected to the inside finder to ground. I ensured that there is a solid wire contact to the metal inside fender and joining up with the rest of the NEG battery cable. Still no crank and of curse no fire. Any suggestions of what to try next? Thank you all for sharing your own mechanical issues with your own Toyota trucks. Be blessed. 🙏🏻🇺🇸
Thanks! I always refer to you as one of my best sources for auto repair advice because you very systematically and very thoroughly explain what you're doing.
If no power, or vey little power, despite a good battery and/or efforts to jump it, check the battery terminal connections, but also the negative cable where it attaches to the car for ground. I had this issue on the coldest (deep freeze) day of the year. I'm sure the metal shrinking in the cold temperatures helped to cause this problem. Besides corrosion, there were deposits from arching that also insulated the sides of the connection. Cleaned it and problem solved.
I have to say thank you for your video's. I've been trying to diagnose issues with a 67 impala. And every video I've watched of yours tonight has led me to believe it's in the ignition switch or the wire leading from it. Because I can jump the starter, and when I turn the key I only get 6.5 volts coming from the ignition trigger at the starter ( battery provides a solid 12.6v at battery and starter always hot.) Thanks for helping out yet another backyard mechanic!
Just watched your video and hope I can get my truck started and back home from Walmart where it broke down! Very informative regardless, I'm soon to attend a new college and learn the auto mechanic trade. Thanks for the head start!
Thanks so much for taking your time in explaining how to do these things. I liked how you didn’t rush through it and you were patient in the explanations.
I cant thank you enough for this video. Explanations were clear and straight forward. From this i was able to save myself the embarrassment of towing my tuck to a mechanic. Also, bc of this video i was able to fix my truck in the middle of the Sonoma fires which are currently happening. Otherwise i would have been stuck. Thanks again.
Great vid, thx! Did you make a video regarding "intermittent starting issue?" My truck starts and runs fine for a couple months, but then just won't start. No crank, nothing. I have power; interior lights, headlights, radio, etc, but no crank no start. I'll wait a day or two, then it fires right up as if there was never a problem. Frustrating! I'm having the problem right now which lead me to your video lol. Tomorrow at first light, I will go through the steps mentioned in the video but since you mentioned "intermittent starter issues" at the end of the video, I have to wonder what else it could be.. During the past 2 years I have been searching for this problem on YT, only tonight did I find your video.
Excellent videos. Clear and comprehensive. 99 grand vitara 2.5 I jumped the starter magnetic switch wire to the pos battery post, and it turns over but no spark. I was thinking of putting in a starter button. 1.) would the crankshaft position sensor still cause spark in this scenario ? 2.) would a faulty neutral safety switch prevent spark ? 3.) would a faulty camshaft position sensor have anything to do with it not sparking ?
I have watched your videos before. You are probably the best mechanic out there. You explain things so well. This is by far the best explanation I can find, and I've been bingeing since our 08 fusion is dead in the water. Looking forward to trying some of the stuff no one else explained. Thank you so much!

Beside all your great informative knowledge, Man, you are such a funny dude and makes us laugh so much with your great sense of humor!!! your fallower and fan from Tijuana Mexico, we LOVE YOU brother, AWESOME TH-cam channel!!!
At 1:12, when you do the voltage drop test at the battery post, you need to have a load placed on the battery. in other words you need current flowing. Its the same as doing the voltage drop test from the battery to the starter. In a 12V system the maximum allowable voltage drop is 0.5V which is best done with an scope since the starter puts a varying load on the battery when the car is stated.
Yep, he missed out on this one without placing a load on the battery. A mere resistance test would have been more appropriate in this case than a voltage drop test without load.
Thank you, for the awesome video. I am going through this, right now. I brought a new ignition switch, still no voltage coming through the starter cable. I believe the program is with the purple starter cable itself. I recently repaired my engine harness, and i ended up cutting the starter cable in multiple areas, because I thought it was too long. After I did that, it ended up too short. So, I used some heat-strink butt connectors, to piece the starter wiring back together. I think there's a poor connection somewhere, within the starter cable itself. However, I am about to replace the whole starter cable. I know it's not the starter, cause it's brand new. Relay and fuses are good, battery is new, battery cables are new, and no anti-theft problem. The only thing it could be, if the change in wiring doesn't correct the problem, then my park neural safety switch could be the cause of me not getting the 12 volts, through the starter cable.
Excellently explained! I'm having trouble with my '89 4Runner and found your video. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. You did a great job!
Your are ASE Certified, I can tell you are no back yard mechnanic thanks for sharing your tech experience. You broke it down so that anybody could understand.
EXTRA TIP: Also make sure the vehicle is shifted all the way to Park. A loose/misaligned cable or shifter arm preventing it from fully clicking into Park could prevent starting.
Yo! Been searching for hours and couldn’t find a fix- saw this comment, put my key in and applied forward pressure to my gear shift and it worked! Thank you!
Usually though if your able to take your key out of the ignition then everything there is working correctly because if it doesn't sense it is in park then it will not allow you to take the key out of the ignition
Great Video and nicely detailed where literally anyone could do this themselves. This video may not help your problem or be what you thought it was but it gives you more knowledge regarding troubleshooting your vehicle yourself. So when the time comes that something unfortunate happens to your vehicle, you will be ready. Thank You for the great video.
This week my 7.3 had no click one morning on several key turns, came back in an hour, started right up. The morning prior had to crank 3rd time (no clicks, just cranking, no fire up) before it shimmied right up and was good. So, Replaced 2 year, 10 month old "good" Deka batteries with Odyssey glass mats and no more issues and wallet's easier to carry. Last fall I had a "click" noise when turning key, there was a click" from R front fender area, replaced starter relay and good to go (had to hit relay to start to get home (or you can screwdriver from small to larger terminal on it, and risk shock)). Tried a new relay when had click one day a month ago and found the ford one took more draw and wouldn't work, so put on chinese one and it fired up until this week, so I had clues my batteries were ending life cycle). Sometimes numbers look ok but older wiring loses juice at various spots and grounds get crappy, I had cleaned starter connection under truck and all battery bits in the fall, but cold winter drained more juice until it was clear I needed new cells. My starter is hi-torque, and alternator HD rebuilt, both last 2 years.
Excellent detailed video. Thanks for sharing your expertise. I got a no crank, no start and have been getting PCM codes. So I replaced my PCM. Still no start. I just changed out my ignition switch and still no crank. I cannot jump start it, so not the battery. I'm going to test fuses next and go from there.
James Brant I replaced the starter. It started but I’m still getting battery light and I had the alternator replaced just a few years ago. So I’m thinking it could be a wire to the alternator.
GREAT video!! I have a 2006 Corolla CE no crank no start. It's a 5 Speed manual. I replaced the Starter relay and the starter but the signal wire or trigger is getting no voltage so now I'm replacing the ignition switch! I also bypassed the Clutch switch just in case that was the problem.
Thank you very much. This is the best most, thorough and informative of the all the videos I watched in the last four hours on the subject matter. Great Job!
Great video. My 1992 Chevy S10 , after no notice at all, just failed to do anything when the key was turned. Had interior and dash lights, head lights and all, nothing at the key. Don't hesitate to use a little force with your hand, when checking connections. The solenoid Positive post that connects to the battery's positive cable. The cable was TIGHT, but the solenoid cap was able to move on the top of it. I just happened to be able to wiggle the battery cable and the entire cap of the solenoid started rocking. That was the culprit faulty solenoid. Done and Done... Thumbs ^ and Subby....
I just this week started having starting problems with my 2003 3L V6 Ford Ranger. So far it has only happened twice. Each time it started and drove fine. But when I went to start it again it cranked just fine but wouldn’t start. After 10-20 minutes ± it starts right up and runs fine. When it isn’t starting all gauges and lights are working normal. New Battery + clamps no other problems
I have to crank my truck a few times before it turns over, sometimes I have to do it like 10 times. The starter was replaced and still same issue. Wish I had seen this video before replacing the starter. Moving on to relays and the crankshaft sensor and cam shalf position sensor. Inexpensive parts on amazon. Thanks for the video
Dude your absolutely awesome. Haven't tried any of these yet but you went over pretty much everything that could be wrong with a car not starting. Two thumbs up 👍👍
Great video thanks for sharing. I have a 2006 4Runner, lately if I don’t drive it for a week or so, when I start, all I hear is chattering noise, if I jump it it starts immediately. I suspect a battery leak. How can I check to see if battery is draining its charge. Thanks
Have a 2010 VW Routan(Chrysler). I had the problem of one click, no start. This fix may not fix everyone's but it did mine. It is likely not the starter or the battery. If the starter is clicking then it is not the NSS at all. The NSS prevents the starter from doing anything. So check that off. Switching your gears is NOT fixing the problem. It's only a coincidence that it works after. I have this problem after my first OEM starter blew and a new (re-man) one was put in by dealer and sometime after my trans was replaced/fixed for a whirring problem. This problem went on for several years and slowly got worse. This year.(2020) It would happen everyday and almost everytime I tried to start it. Put 2 starters on it, same thing, battery good, etc. Weird it hardly ever happened in the winter. I'm believing now it's because of the drier weather. Now after watching this video I decided to check the grounds. (th-cam.com/video/qdS1Ru1s6H4/w-d-xo.html). To make this short. I replaced the broken ground strap that is on the passenger side engine compartment that grounds the block to the frame. Mine was broken as you will likely find yours to be. (www.chryslerminivan.net/threads/ground-strap-broken.170175/) Then I removed both cables on the starter (There are 2) and cleaned them with a power drill with wire brush attached. (nice and shiney) Then I removed the eyelet ground wire from the battery to the frame (located inside engine compartment behind drivers side headlight) Cleaned that the same way.(nice and shiney, both eyelet and post). Next do the same for ground wire that screws onto the transmission housing. (power drill, wire brush, bare metal) Tighten up. Clean battery posts too if yours are crappy. Basically, you're just not having a good enough ground to spin that starter. Haven't had the problem since, over 2 weeks now. Problem: One click, no start. Solved: Cleaned ground connections and the "hot" connections to starter.
Just a thought! As you were down at the starter, place dvom leads at positive battery post and on positive (always hot)post of starter whilst key in cranking position would give total voltage drop of that wire under load then switch to solenoid signal wire and finish neg battery to neg case of starter. Seeing battery voltage at starter can be achieved through only one stand of wire but not enough to power it.

thanks for the detailed video. wondering if you can give a sugestion. while driving the other my car stopped and now it wont crank, wont start not even with jumper cable. the dash gets power. baterry and alterntor checked ok,
great video, thank you. I'm wondering what I should look at if I'm only getting 10.5 v back from power to starter while turning key? Is there a fuse or a relay? coil? Its hard to follow that wire because its taped to others. TIA
nice info my man. Hey my 98 ford explorer has no lights on dash. However, after driving 60-80mph for about 20 miles, the truck will just randomly shut off. After sitting for 5 minutes, it will start back up again. Had a tune-up done 3 months ago, no issues until after that tune-up was done....
I understood from your video that camshaft and crank shaft sensors are not one of the reason causing this issue. However another video of other person stated that could be one of the reason? I am not a mechanic I wish I was , it is interesting. Thanks

@@mrobvious5892 PLEASE, enlighten us as to everything that's wrong in this video (if you can).
@@mrobvious5892 dude this guy explains a lot of stuff really clearly..i bet you are talking sh!t just to get the guy you recommend some views.. I'll make a point of avoiding the guy you talk about (i bet that's YOU!)..
don't call him a bonehead.@@mrobvious5892
Another great video. Clear, concise and informative. Actual information I can apply, given from an obvious pro. Soooo much better than the "hey dudes wasssup???" videos which tell and show you little while the "mechanic" babbles on about useless crap. Not even in the same universe. Subscribing right now!
You are educational, careful and thoughtful in your choice of words and use of grammer and your very precise with your your method of educating. Huge props. I learned lots. God bless you
Shiny James Lamoureux wow .lol
Thank you so much for this primer on narrowing down the possible causes for an engine not cranking/not starting. Love your common sense approach- "Do the simple things first!"...
i dont mean to be offtopic but does anyone know a tool to log back into an instagram account?

Thank you. These videos are priceless in helping us keep our old vehicles on the road in these difficult times. Much appreciated sir. Good on you.
Good job! I just had to walk a friend through everything you did over the phone. Wish I would have known about this video! Great work. You are providing a wonderful public service.
This video really helped me! Turns out it was my starter relay fuse $30, replaced it and car started! Thank you so much!

Thanks for taking the time to do what you do and share your knowledge, skills and wisdom, overall improving people's lives.
don’t know about Chrisfix?
Be blessed. 🙏🏻🇺🇸
Yes, your battery... its mostly the battery... the lights should of least come on with the battery.. check again... hopefully it's that..
dam im a old mechanic but found your diagnosis great some time we forget important steps
Perfect all problems compiled into 1 video with all things to check in order!
Thanks! I always refer to you as one of my best sources for auto repair advice because you very systematically and very thoroughly explain what you're doing.
So much more informative than Scotty Kilmer. Thank you.
Yeah but I BET when u have a problem with your car, scotty is the man who videos you look out for . BE HONEST.
YES HE IS TRULY A GREAT MACH,TECH AND HUMAN BEING !!!
Heyyyy, you, leave Scott out of your nonsense
Scotty remains the best stop fooling yourself
Scotty’s information is as good as the mess in his garage.
You videos keep getting better, thanks for sharing.
What a legend, super informative!! No umming and ahhing and never getting to the point in the description. Keep them coming bud 🙌🏽🛠️
Did y get there?
Your videos have always been super helpful, I appreciate your systemic approach, and the speed you crank through it.
Thank you.
This might be the best auto mechanics video I've ever watched. Huge thanks and hope to see more of your videos.
You're wonderful. I'm just starting out and I watch a lot of videos and always come back to you.
Clarity . Straight forward. Thank you from England.🎉
I opened up Notepad and made a checklist, thanks for a great video !
Awesome video! Best video I've seen on No Crank, No Start. Looking forward to your complete ignition start video
Thanks so much for taking your time in explaining how to do these things. I liked how you didn’t rush through it and you were patient in the explanations.
As others have said, great video and well explained.
This guy is a master mechanic for sure.
I love the way this man explains complex things
I am very satisfying to watch your videos and learning from you, am a indian tamil guy. Thanks a lot.
I have watched your videos before. You are probably the best mechanic out there. You explain things so well. This is by far the best explanation I can find, and I've been bingeing since our 08 fusion is dead in the water. Looking forward to trying some of the stuff no one else explained. Thank you so much!
Great job explaining in a very simple and easily understood manner, the photos were extremely helpful... Thank you.
thank you so much for the clear explanation ,that helped me a great deal, please continue to teach as clear as you have done , especially on auto electrical for I am realy trying to work more on electrical.Thank you so much
This is so helpful, thank you so much for making this vid! Gonna try them all out tomorrow
Best video on the YT for starting problem
Thank you!
@@reidyounghome Indeed! I've seen this several times now.
Usually though if your able to take your key out of the ignition then everything there is working correctly because if it doesn't sense it is in park then it will not allow you to take the key out of the ignition
Neutralize the battery 🔋 acid powder with baking soda and hot water.
Rinse well. Thanks for the info bud! Great tips 👍🧰
Very helpful information. I had this situation with my 2006 Toyota Avensis and everything is exactly as as explained in the video. Thumbs up.
I have 2006 Chevy Colorado same thing like mine it was the tb plug fixed it runs like new now
James Brant I replaced the starter.
Best and ever no crank video
Watching in 2022
Good job mate ❤
👏👏👏If not the best you've gotta be one of the best
Great video! Straightforward and to the point. Good job!
Really informative, easy to understand for someone who isn't a gear head, such as myself. Really good man! Keep them coming!
I just this week started having starting
problems with my 2003 3L V6 Ford Ranger.
So far it has only happened twice. Each
time it started and drove fine. But when I went to start it again it cranked
just fine but wouldn’t start. After 10-20 minutes ± it starts right up and runs
fine. When it isn’t starting all gauges and lights are working normal.
New Battery + clamps no other problems
Excellent, informative and well delivered. Great ending 😊
Two thumbs up 👍👍
Man great explanation you are the go to guy from now on your a great teacher get right to and dont blab on and on
Great video thanks for sharing.
Sorry for repeat comments
Thanks for the video
I have a 2006 Toyota Corolla LE
I have this problem no crank or start do you have a video on how to diagnose the neutral safety switch and how to bypass it?
Thanks. Very helpful. As for that part at the end, what if you're not a Jedi?
At least we know you have a sense of humor, good video!
thanks for the detailed video. wondering if you can give a sugestion. while driving the other my car stopped and now it wont crank, wont start not even with jumper cable. the dash gets power. baterry and alterntor checked ok,
great video, thank you. I'm wondering what I should look at if I'm only getting 10.5 v back from power to starter while turning key? Is there a fuse or a relay? coil? Its hard to follow that wire because its taped to others. TIA
It was so hard to find this video but I did and now I think I identified the problem! Thank you!
Have you done a video on bypassing the GM VATS system?
nice info my man.
Thanks
Thank you! We'll done. New Canadian subscriber...whos hoping I don't have too watch too many of your videos...because that means $hit hasn't broke! 😂
Best video I’ve found so far
most thorough tuts much appreciated cuz your also helping some poor mongrel breeds.
