i got the hangthang 18 hp last year . very good motor so far, took it out yesterday. 2 pulls to crank- no paint issues yet. thanks for your knowledge and advice. i like Chinese food too!!!!
None of these issues are a reason to not buy this motor. Every one of those issues are general maintenance issues. Per your video the biggest issue you had was the paint, what happened was electrolysis. These motors do not come with sacrificial anodes from the factory, you need to add your own. The pattern and type of chipping you had in the paint was classic elecrtolysis. Buy some Tohatsu anodes and install them to prevent this issue. The exact same thing will happen to a $10,000 motor if you do not have sacrificial anodes, especially in salt water. If you repaint and do not install anodes, you will have the same issue again. You should always grease all your cables and bolts exposed to the water in any marine engine to prevent these issues. Hangkai saves on cost by not pre-greasing all these areas before shipping, they expect you to do it. And the fuel filter cracking isn't really an issue since you should replace those every year anyway.
I have a 1963 Johnson Evinrude 6 horsepower that has the original spark plugs from Factory everything is original it runs absolutely like brand new and idle for days. Paint is still perfect. Find american made boat stuff. It's simply better in every aspect. Mine is 62 years old and start on first pull every time
Thanks for sharing your experiences, it is appreciated. I live in Florida, USA. I purchased a used 18hp with 40 hours last year. Besides the corroded paint, my tilt spring rusted and broke. It took some time to find a good replacement. I used Yamaha 90506-20M27, not exact shape, but works. I'll have to check how rusted my throttle cable is.
If really want to remove the old (but good) paint, using a grinder with flap disc is easier. Wire brush on drill take too long to remove the good original paint, but can remove the peeled paint easy easy.
This is the hardest test for these engines.Hot salt water. May as well be in acid. Would be nice to have been primed with old school zinc chromate. I am worried what is going on the other side of the metal. It must be a fresh water only engine. No alkaline fresh water either.
The area that he scraped appears to have a galvanized finish on it.... If that's the case, special primer is needed to adhere to that galvanized surface... regular primer won't cut it... It will let go like this black paint is doing... It is a chemical reaction between the galvanization and normal paint... Get the paint off and wipe it all down with mineral spirits or paint thinner.... Galvite metal primer is specifically designed for galvanized metal.. apply as directed and allow to dry... just about any paint can go over that primer. It isn't cheap, but it's a good product.
@@1956tojo yaya, the regular car primer is not ideal. Will try to find the proper marine primer . The car primer is sticking on the body but my cheap regular spray paint after few trip in the salt water, the paint surface is like having rough skin. I will spray with marine paint next time if i can find the paint. Tq for your advise😁
@Meatnewdadbod The same thing can be said about a lot of things. Did you watch the video? They are very low quality. Just because I can buy 3 Kia's for the price of my Toyota doesn't mean Kia is a smart purchase. 🤦 Have you ever heard the saying, "You get what you pay for?"
@@erocker78 the important things on the motor that matter are literally made the same. By the way horrible analogy because Toyotas are built like shit these days. They are no better than kias. And consumer reviews and Edmund’s reports will fact check what I just said
@Meatnewdadbod I don't agree with your statement and if Toyota's are built like shit these days and are no better than Kia, then that's not saying much for your Chinese made Hangkai. Good luck on the water bro. 😆
I had a 1988 Mariner 115, last year of the strait 6 for 35 Years and it was in better shape than that - I am in South Fl and flushing every time you come back in and hosing it down with fresh water (never open the cover and hose the block while hot) I was thinking of a Hangkai for an inflatable, not a chance after seeing all this corrosion -
The hangkai isnt bad except the paint😅. If one is planning to use only one outboard for 10 or more years , maybe is best to get a branded outboard because of their spare parts and services. For someone like me, if this cheap outboard can serve me for maybe 3 to 5years or more, it is a win and money well spent😁.
I have the 12hp the main issue is the pain as well, very lazy to repain so the appearance is quite bad now but the engine performs like new for 2 years now
It is not for saltwater. Mine 12HP same after 3 months. Unless you repain it b4 touching saltwater and change the Anode (i modified Tohatsu 9.8HP Adnode to fit it). For throttle cables, clean it every time after boating.
For hangkai use in fresh water ,the paint problem will still happen but not as fast as salt water. My previous hangkai12hp also change the anode to tohatsu 9.8 one, but better to add additional anode somewhere on the body because the 12hp anode is tiny😁
Good suggestion for new user 👍,but mine is too late for that. now the hangkai is 3yrs old and 300hrs already, i am kind of get used to the look, i just need to sand and repaint it ..maybe once a year😋
Your video is very good friend!! I am very interested in buying one like this based on your experience! I think it will be a good purchase!! Can you tell me what mixture of gasoline and oil I could use? I mean the proportion you use!! 1 gallon of gasoline for how much oil!! thank you
For the first 10hrs the mixture should be 25 : 1 (gasoline : oil) , after 10hrs the mixture 50 gas :1oil. The above ratio is the recommendation of the factory requirement. For me, the first tank of fuel i mixed 25:1, then 2tank onward till now are 50:1.
@@chong7091 Aaaa same with me. Im from Terengganu Malaysia. Pantai Timur sea punya haha. Yeah dah nampak macam ada bengkak sikit could be corroded inside. The tilt steel, i just apply grease once in a while. Undercoat use the car undercoat/marine grade undercoat. I use car undercoat only, bought at the car paint shop

Yes, All the Hankais are like this. I have the 6.5hp 4 stroke. Lives in salt water. Started to corrode after the first season. They do not prep the aluminum correctly at the factory for painting. They use 1 coat of black enamel paint with no primer coat. I took my outboard completely apart, sand blasted all the pieces down to the raw aluminum, prepped the aluminum for painting, heavy coat of primer, two coats of black enamel and two coats of clear coat. or just a get a mint used 9.9/15hp OMC motor and corrosion issues will be a thing of the past with $ to spare. yamaha still corrodes, although much better than this trash.
The outboard is not bad you just need to "Engineer the Chinese out of It" I redid my paint job and changed out a few bearings and seals with quality German/Japanese made bearings/seals.
