I took invega sustena and invega Trinza for 6 years and for a major part of that time I had to do crystal meth to feel ok. I had a severe tbi 11 years ago. I take clozapine now and I have to drink lots of caffeine and use nicotine to feel ok. I quit smoking cigarettes 5 months ago, hopefully I will never smoke tobacco ever again. I could use your prayers. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when I was 18. I'm 33 now

I was finally diagnosed with bipolar at 42 although I was 15 when I had my first mania. No one looked beyond it to see if their was a cooccurring disorder along with it. I certainly had many signs of CPTSD by that point. No one ever looked past blaming everything on my having bipolar until I went in to therapy 16 years later and realized what had been done to me all those years was abuse and at that time it was still going on. I really got a lot better but after 4 years of therapy the state said I'd been in therapy too long and I surely must be "fixed". Last fall I tried a new one but just didn't click with her. All I do is try to do the work on my own. I have got to move from here nearer a city. Their's nothing in Northern Michigan but sub zero temps and snow.

Thank you so much for this lecture. I’ve been long looking for a truly in depth, not too dry informative video. Everything the doctor mentions here is very accurate and detailed, with a lot of compassion and attention towards what the symptoms truly entails. Often information only describes the symptoms very superficial, such as mania but not describing the ‘logic’ and emotions that goes with it. Much appreciated.

I’ve experienced depression/anxiety for years and most recently found out some of this may be bipolar now. Also, thank you for mentioning PMDD bc it’s important and it also was a thing for me. I came down to the same conclusion that it affects my mood fluctuations especially around the times of my cycle. So it’s a variety of symptoms but I’m narrowing down now and getting to the bottom of it! 🎉

the ancient Greeks used to consider bipolar disorder as a divine gift from the gods! A divine gift! Wow! That’s WAY different than how we are looked at today. How fascinating. “Mania” and “melancholia” were among the first two diseases ever categorized. Even Socrates and Plato understood that mania was a divine state with various characteristics such as “erotic inspiration” sent from the god of love or “proteptic inspiration” derived from the Muses. They even go on to say that the god Apollo is the source of this divine inspiration!

Question: When people are in a hypomanic or manic episode, do you ever see people who start playing video games for very long periods of time? Or, at weird hours of day/night? Or, would a person in an episode be too restless to sit at a computer for that long?

hypomania and mania do not fully occur for more than 4 consecutive days with ADHD. you might have a night where you get excited about an idea, preform that idea, then get bored and fall asleep.
Bipolar mania is constantly feeling the need to do things or form ideas in your head.

Sometimes after we've done all we can do to heal,,and need to let go, we may just have to face that we were just a victim of circumstances. So we're they. And it'll continue until you break the cycle. Bless and godspeed on your healing journey

Dr. Thomas Insel, formerly the director at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in the U.S. stated in his personal blog on 29 April 2013:
_The goal of this new manual, as with all previous editions, is to provide a common language for describing psychopathology. While DSM has been described as a “Bible” for the field, it is, at best, a dictionary, creating a set of labels and defining each. The strength of each of the editions of DSM has been “reliability” - each edition has ensured that clinicians use the same terms in the same ways. The weakness is its lack of validity. Unlike our definitions of ischemic heart disease, lymphoma, or AIDS, the DSM diagnoses are based on a consensus about clusters of clinical symptoms, not any objective laboratory measure. In the rest of medicine, this would be equivalent to creating diagnostic systems based on the nature of chest pain or the quality of fever. Indeed, symptom-based diagnosis, once common in other areas of medicine, has been largely replaced in the past half century as we have understood that symptoms alone rarely indicate the best choice of treatment._

What happens if you go your knowledge have no family history of bipolar, have no past trauma, and have never exhibited symptoms of bipolar until you got on anti depressants and had a manic episode? This is the case with me. I’m 19 so I’m still quite young and it may just be my symptoms haven’t shown yet but it’s hard for me to believe I am bipolar when I exhibit next to no signs of bipolar aside from the depression which I have been diagnosed with in the past.

It can be frustrating dealing with humans . A doctor is just a name for the type of hat a human wears, I'm not referencing a hat, I'm referencing humans. Peace and Love! I thank you for your work Dr. Snipes!@@DocSnipes

Dr. Snipes why is it that you find cognitive behavioral therapy the most effective? Or do you?

    • @DocSnipes
      @DocSnipes  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Because much of people's emotional dysregulation is caused by feeling unsafe and powerless as a result of inaccurate cognitions. This ongoing fear causes changes in the HPA-Axis/stress response and subsequent mood, trauma related and "personality" disorders.

I have bipolar II so idk if this applies to type I. Lithium (which is a natural mineral and does not have withdrawal symptoms) has been great for my sleep/mania/general stability even at a low dose. Lamictil has been helpful for my depression. I’ve been on both for almost 2 years and feel much more stable/less reactive. I still have cycles triggered by stress or the weather but I’m not as miserable and out of control as I used to be. Antidepressants and antipsychotics fucked me up real bad for years (age 18-22) when I first sought treatment. Often the side /withdrawal effects from these meds leave you worse off than you were to begin with. Inexperienced doctors don’t understand those risks when prescribing heavy duty meds. Lots of intensive and group therapy for my other various diagnoses (CPTSD, ED, ADHD, etc) have been helpful too.

@@mkhan9764*ABSTRACT:* Background: Akathisia continues to be a significant challenge in current neurological and psychiatric practice. Prompt and accurate detection is often difficult and there is a lack of consensus concerning the neurobiological basis of akathisia. No definitive treatment has been established for akathisia despite numerous preclinical and clinical studies.] Method: We reviewed antipsychotic-induced akathisia including its clinical presentation, proposed underlying pathophysiology, current and under investigation therapeutic strategies. Conclusion: Despite the initial promise that second generation antipsychotics would be devoid of akathisia effects, this has not been confirmed. Currently, there are limited therapeutic options for the clinical practice and the evidence supporting the most widely used treatments (beta blockers, anticholinergic drugs) is still absent or inconsistent.

@@mkhan9764 *ABSTRACT:* Dopamine-receptor blocking agent-associated akathisia (DRBA-A) is an adverse effect that can significantly limit the use of these important medications for the treatment of a variety of psychiatric diseases, yet there is no unifying theory regarding its pathophysiology. This knowledge gap limits clinicians’ ability to effectively manage DRBA-A and mitigate negative outcomes in an already vulnerable patient population. Based on a review of the current literature on the subject, it is hypothesized that dopaminergic and noradrenergic signaling is perturbed in DRBA-A. Accordingly, it is proposed that the optimal agent to manage this extrapyramidal symptom should increase dopamine signaling in the affected areas of the brain and counteract compensatory noradrenergic signaling via antagonism of adrenergic or serotonergic receptors.

Good God. She sounds like so many of my psychiatrists in the 23 years I have been diagnosed bipolar depressive. ... all science and no actual experience.
She's so excited to have discovered her PhD theory. This is what I have said for all of these years, "if you have no actual experience then you are like a priest who offered marriage counseling." Everything that you "know" is from a book.
Sadly you actually "know" nothing until you have lived in our heads
