In one of my old Guitar World magazines featuring Led Zeppelin Jimmy said It was his Fender 12 string tuned to an open G. He also said they slowed down the tape machine to make the track sound more intense. Excellent work JJ.
They recorded it faster, along with the drums and keys, and slowed it down to get a sludgier tone. The harmonica was recorded backwards, had delay added, and reversed to add delay preceding the actual notes, giving the spooky vibe.
Hey, for what it is worth, I always enjoy you thoughts and insights on the pieces you play and find it most useful for working out tunings on my own. Thanks for this one!
Anything Led Zeppelin is special, reminds me of great times, nowadays we need all we can get of feeling good, and this band hits it on the nail... By the way, I don't mind the talking, human touch is always welcomed.
Amazing, Man! Your ability to play by ear astounds me. That's a gift from the Universe or something. I'm not sure that can be learned. But, thank you very much for breaking it down for us mere mortals. :-)
The only annoying talking is when they over-explain string/fret/finger when just playing it is explanatory. Your backstory here is important. I never knew it was slowed down and now it's so obvious it was. Thanks for the great lesson.
I know this is about the guitar mainly, and don’t get me wrong he is amazing at the guitar. But that drum intro. Man, I can’t get enough of it. So simple yet so groovy.
I can do that job! What a great classic! I was listening to this from some vinyl albums my dad left me. He saw them when they played at some bowling alley way back when. Got to see Jason several times, but great stuff! Music that will live on forever
I'll always remember listening to this with headphones while I was skiing. Cutting big wide turns in time with the music. Almost a religious experience. Try it sometime.
So, we were in London last week for Spring Break. I kept trying to walk by Jimmy Page's house in Kensington, but didn't get the chance. Wifey didn't understand - it was so I could report to JJ that I walked by Page's house! Not that I expected to get close or that he would invite me in to play Zep songs with him (which I learned from JJ). We are working from home and quarantining ourselves (school is canceled this week, too), so I have some guitar playing in my immediate future. I'll finish building the guitar armoire in my shop and have about five guitars to build. Thanks for all the videos - I'll need them. Cabin fever should hit in about six or seven minutes. Cheers!
James: For me your videos are akin to sitting in a room with my HS band mate, after so many years, and figuring it out. Familiar and comfortable. Great job.
You could talk all day about everything and nothing , I’d listen…. Obviously I’ve never met you in person but you’re one of my favorite humans and by far my fav TH-cam channel. Too bad that a few idiots and their comments ruined it for the rest of us who absolutely adore you. Picking up guitar again and watching your channel have helped get me through a rough patch of life and I’ll always be grateful for all these amazing videos. Hope you’re doing well double J 😊
I remember playing it in F tuning. But I actually like this better. I also believe that Page & the engineers lowered it so it sounded more like F tuning cause any time I watched Jimmy Page play it, he played in G Tuning... Thanks JJ for posting this video. It's one of my favorite tunes....
A slowed down tape explains the drums sounding so resonant. Aside from the echo and the stairwell effect there’s something else going on with that drum sound.
More utube guitar videos should be like this guy. I can actually hear HIM playing without all the bullshit post production, over processing and quantized shit we get. My God, I can actually hear his attack and all the little worts and pimples. Bravo, u have a new sub.
Grab the Coda remaster with the companion disc (vinyl). Listen to "If It Keeps On Raining" and drag the pitch down on your turntable. There will be an instant where you realize exactly how they got that sound.
@@boss-li4rj th-cam.com/video/FVD9V9sHERc/w-d-xo.html I feel like that song was definitely recorded and slowed down to give it that industrial grinding sound.
I dont hate when.you talk , as a fellow musician, what you have to say is very interesting and I get to know you a little better, you.have been one.of my fav.teachers!😌
If you're saying things unrelated to the video you're probably getting off track, but that's not what you do. You're succinct and to the point with helpful and often critical information for getting the song down. I think the number of subscribers and views has proven your teaching techniques and you don't need to sweat what anyone who is here LEARNING FROM YOU complains about. You're probably the best youtube channel there is for actually learning to play songs. I've been playing for 20+ years and I learn from you all the time.
Pitch up or down in the studio recording is a mystery but if they play it live they obviously have to play in whatever tuning that they do without the studio trick. I think 🤔 you nail it with this live recording! Oh and before I go nice T shirt- and enjoy some of the MOST delicious bacon 🥓 emoji that’s available on the internet!...did I mention that it’s delicious 😋...
Cryin won’t help you
Praying won’t do you no good.
Pretty much sums up my approach to my guitar playing skills
Haha. I feel that way a lot when playing, too
lol, mine too.
Practice will though! It's not like Page just picked it up and wrote Stairway one day dude. Lol you can do it!
lmao
@@NICKWAPPERER117 You can try.

Mind Blown, so good. I tune in for the lessons and music but STAY for the talk and banter! Bravo!
I don’t mind the talking. People need to re-evaluate their lives if a few seconds of information is too time consuming.
I certainly prefer the explanations.. No problem here with the talking..
I like the talking, the trick of slowing down or speeding up the tape and all the other studio tricks bands do is interesting stuff to me.
Keep talking Sir , Your the only person I've seen giving tips on how to figure out tunings very helpful Indeed ..Rock Steady !!
Agreed prefer the explanation good stuff!!!
Absolutely. Can always skip forward. But I found it informative.
Talk away JJ. I've learnt so much over the years. Rock on!
love how Zeppelin took the blues and injected it with such immense power...goosebumps .
This song never gets old ...in top 5 Zep favs..

Dare McAdams what are the other 4? If you don’t mind me asking

Greg, very fitting for these crazy times!! 😞
Lyrics are relevant today............
JJ it’s the opposite, we love when you talk! Keep it up
The only youtuber who is so knowledgeable that I actually like to listen to him talk about my fav bands
Knowledge is power

Gotta learn this one tomorrow. Thanks for this cataloge James !!
Love the lessons, thank you again.

Finally, some relief from the storm hitting us all
I have so much admiration for people who can interpret greatness and give lessons on it.....
Woke up at 3am and this appears in my TH-cam scroll.
I give it a big hell yeah.
Great tone ..imo..
Impressive ~

This guy was a guitarrist in his past life, thats how n why it jump over (the talent) in this life..well just my opinion ..jeje cheers👍🖖
It's actually a pretty easy song, you could most certainly learn it my guy

Here is the album take before it was slowed down.
I’m okay with the explanations because there’s always something subtle that I can’t get by just watching.
I know this is about the guitar mainly, and don’t get me wrong he is amazing at the guitar. But that drum intro. Man, I can’t get enough of it. So simple yet so groovy.

It's played on G and then slowed down. Jimmy himself tells in his biography "Light and Shade". You should read it, you would like it!
Great Knebworth t shirt, the gig i never got to, loving the zeppelin lessons 😁😁
That's a raw power riff if I ever heard one. Thanks for the lesson James !
These are just the best! you have taught me how to play so many songs the RIGHT way!
English kids covering an old blues song about the Mississippi Floods of 1927...Love it!!

Very well done!
Bravo! Perfection.
Outstanding job!!!

The tuning I found to be good for this song is: CFCFAC. The high A gives it a nice ring to it.
That's open G tuned down to F.
Excellent

The tape on the album was slowed down to make it sound dark/muddy. That’s why it’s hard to tune to the album version.
Doug Zbikowski it’s not hard to tune it to album version lol.
this is aweasome!!!
Very cool, never knew all that, i like the version they did for MTV no quarter
Right on!
Amazing!
