Mike Campbell is such a great player. He really knows how to play to the song. When I was young I liked the flashy players like Tony Mcalpine, Satrianni, Vai and they are all definitely great players but the more experienced I became at writing guitar parts the more I started to realize how great players like Mike Campbell, Neil Giraldo, Elliot Easton are.
nice.i lost my forefinger 13 years ago but still play guitar.this is great.this song takes me back it hits hard everytime i hear it.don henley is awesome.
It's always good when Marty breaks out one of the Murphs I think the lead riffs in the background make the song talk about old i was in my late 20,s when this came out still remember the video playing on MTV 😂🤘
This was fantastic. To me, the lead melodic riffing at the end of the song is maybe the most genius part...It leaves an indelible mark on the listener as the guitar sings and cries over the loss of the summer and her and never looking back to make it worse. The guitar just tattoos the conscious with that play out. Thanks for doing this tutorial. Very well presented.
A lot going on in this tune!. And s always, you nailed it down big-time, Marty! Sounds so good coming out of that Les Paul. Loving this. Lots for us to work on with this. And I'm like you... man what a great song. Grew up with it. Cruised with it. And it's still on my play-list. One for the ages. Rock on, Brother.
Good tune,.I guess I never learned this tune off Building the Perfect Beast. Also liked Sunset Grill too of that record. I think it came out in 84 but for me I heard it more in 86. Always takes me back. Thank you for the lesson Marty! Awesome as always
now I know why you don’t play through the song Marty! Even though I would love to hear you play through it! Also, thank you for the theory that you’re putting in here. It helps me a lot.
Thanks Marty , I’m a new subscriber to your channel. This was a great lesson to one of my favorite songs to listen too , now I can try and play it thanks and Happy Thanksgiving …. I heard Mike Campbell say this is about baseball players
Thanks for answering. I'm going to listen to the recording and see for myself what's going on with what key it's in . Plus we both know they can play it in whatever key they feel like. But I will check it out for fun. Thank you.
😊 yep it's definitely E flat when you play along with it on the record that plays perfectly But Marty's playing it in standard tuning so this is The ataris 2003 cover Right my man??😉😉
Tom Petty and the Heartbreaks guitarist Mike Campbell wrote this song for Tom but Don needs a number 1 so Mike sold it to him. Don Henley is in a blind item on TH-cam if you want to know how bad of a guy he is.
While it does have his style, it was actually written by Mike Campbell. Tom Petty didn't want to use the track so Don Henley wrote lyrics for it and used it. 😎🤘
Could you start indicating the fingers you are using.. it's hard to tell by just watching...and my solo work is always hampered by the idea of which finger is most effective
Yeah Mike composed all the music he invited Don to listen to the song, he liked it so he wrote the lyrics and did the vocals. Mike has a video on TH-cam telling the story of the composition.
Man I hope they don't take this video down. I have a tiny little channel that just plays snippets of covers via TH-cam Shorts and I've literally had 2 messages over a year or so telling me they took videos down because the stupid Eagles and Don Henley and their army of lawyers that apparently think we might keep Don Henley from being rich or something. LOL!
Cool …finally got a Mike Campbell lesson….yes. Thanks man
You're very welcome 😊

Wow, this song brings back some great memories from the 80’s…the nostalgia is THICK!
Totally!
Great lesson on a great tune! Hopefully the Henley goons doesn't take the video down...
Great Lesson, Alway's liked this song and the song The Pride You Hide Roger Daltrey

Cool walk through.... song takes me back as well to the fall of 84
Marty I'm going to learn your version it makes the most sense. Thank you for a great lesson.
Another great lesson, thanks Marty

Great lesson. This song always brings back memories!
Lots of cool guitar parts in this song. Can't wait to get to it.
Yes Sir !

One of my favourite songs too, thank you for this, may the sun shine forever in all our hearts 🙏😌🙏
Thanks for this lesson, one of my favorites too. I was a teenager when it came out…
Boy, was it a summer😢! I already can't wait for spring!! So I can be the boy of summer next year! Ok, old man of summer!😮Great lesson!! Thanks Marty 🤘
I'm totally not a winter guy. I like fall but sheesh. Good weather sucks
Here in France we skipped summer this year 😩
now I know why you don’t play through the song Marty! Even though I would love to hear you play through it! Also, thank you for the theory that you’re putting in here. It helps me a lot.
I couldn't believe how simple this song is to play, I thought it was going to be more difficult, but even I can play it now! Thanks mate 👍✌️
I’m digging this
Thanks Marty.
Very welcome
gracias, muchas gracias maestro he aprendido mucho de ti; gracias marty.
Great lesson, Thanks Marty. Cheers!

You're welcome! Oh yeh... that would make sense! About baseball ... cool!
Great tune and thanks for adding the melody line to the chords for us loner guitars out there :-)
My pleasure! Thanks for tuning in!
Tremendous choice here. Thank you. 🤠
Nice lesson! Thank you.
Awesome, thanks Marty
You're very welcome! 😎🎸

Nice Les Paul!!! 😍
Hi how are you rock on dude l am learning to play guitar basic power chords you are a perfect guitarist
really cool
Awesome choice! Great tune, been binging on Henley lately! How about “I will not go quietly” next 👍
getting nice tone here
Thanks!
Welcome! 🙏
How you doing Marty? Always wanted to learn this one, thanks. Peace 🕊️
Be careful Don Henley will sue you for using his music! He’s destroying the Eagles on TH-cam
He’s got a staff of people to look for his music online. My guess is this video won’t survive the night
@ Probably will get a copyright strike I hope he doesn’t
Say Mike Campbell instead
While Henley has a point, he is destroying his legacy by being a tool.
since Don Henley didn't write the song, can he still file a copyright strike, just because he published it?
❤❤❤
😊 yep it's definitely E flat when you play along with it on the record that plays perfectly
But Marty's playing it in standard tuning so this is The ataris 2003 cover
Right my man??😉😉
Just plain bitchin Marty. You’re my favorite guitar instructor. Love this Lp too.
Mike Campbell was the originator of the music. His guitar parts also.
Nice lesson. Right at about 16 minutes I believe he’s using an octaver with lower base notes.
Don’t let Don know. 😧
🤫
Could you please teach "What's next to the moon by AC DC, because the online tutorials are terrible for this song. Thanks
Mike Campbell played a Telecaster on this I believe
Uncle Bens uncle
Well I tuned to 440 . And when I put on the recording the chorus comes in on a F sharp. I don't care. I love that song.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreaks guitarist Mike Campbell wrote this song for Tom but Don needs a number 1 so Mike sold it to him. Don Henley is in a blind item on TH-cam if you want to know how bad of a guy he is.
Watch it quick before Donny comes a calling!
Boy's of Summer music by Mike Campbell! LOL Lyrics by Don Henley.
I steered clear of playing too much to get flagged ... fingers crossed. 🔥😎
I think Lindsey Buckingham composed and played all the guitar parts. There are similarities with the later Fleetwood Mac hits.
While it does have his style, it was actually written by Mike Campbell. Tom Petty didn't want to use the track so Don Henley wrote lyrics for it and used it. 😎🤘
Recording credits: Mike Campbell and Danny Kortchmar on synthesizers and guitars.
Damm I hate to say this . I saw Mike Campbell playing it in B. On you tube.
I bet he wrote it in that key 😎
It's played in B now 'cause ol' don needs it in a lower key to sing it now.
@ makes total sense .... age sucks! 😣
Could you start indicating the fingers you are using.. it's hard to tell by just watching...and my solo work is always hampered by the idea of which finger is most effective
Sure thing man
Story goes Mike Campbell wrote This tom petty wasn’t feeling it so don henley recorded it I could be wrong 😊
Yeh, very cool win for Mike!
Yeah Mike composed all the music he invited Don to listen to the song, he liked it so he wrote the lyrics and did the vocals. Mike has a video on TH-cam telling the story of the composition.

Not if you're in the southern hemisphere. We are about to go into summer
Originally written for Petty
Very cool backstory
Sounds to me like BOS was recorded using a Telecaster....it has that tele twang to me 😮
It's totally possible. 🤷
My guitar is in Eb right not. Lol
people who don't want to adjust their tuning are LAZY.......
A lot of dudes on here have locking nuts and floating trems. So I get it.
