WOW....been a huge Zep fan since I was 13 and now 43....never heard this...what a treat! Don't forget peoples...this voice is coming out of a 21 year old.
I like the rawness of early Led Zeppelin. They were still developing their style and perfecting it. They took chances and that is why they stood out from many other bands. Kind of like Hendrix and Jeff Beck they also stood out at that time. Love this stuff.
I am 71 years old. I saw them ONE WEEK after this show in Seattle WA. on May 9, '69. At the Seattle Aqua Theatre, just about a month before they became world wide stars and tickets became almost impossible to get. They were unlike anything any one in Seattle had ever seen before. I was 16 years old and this changed my life. Had a guitar in hand all these years later. Best show I ever saw. Killed everyone who was there. I saw them later in '69 at the Goldcreek Pop Festival (also in Seattle area) and saw them perform "Whole Lotta Love" for the first time in the whole northwest. Saw every show from '69 till '72, then went on the road myself. Thought I'd say so as my time is getting short. I was there. I saw it. It was the greatest musical event I ever saw.
Thanks for sharing your story Steve, you lived thru what I consider to be the most amazing cultural/societal change in the 20th century and there won't be another like it. We need the stories of those like you who were there and witnessed the "supernova" explosion of rock music that happened in the 60's and 70's. I was there for the second half of that amazing phenomenon but was just a little too young to be there for the emergence of Led Zeppelin and all the other amazing bands that exploded onto the scene during those late 60's.
John Paul Jones is the reason I picked up the bass as a 14 yo punk in 1971....one listen to that spectacular debut LP did it for me.....followed by more spectacular LP's...
This song must have at least a dozen musical influences in it. It’s always amazing how Zeppelin bend, twist and stretch a song into something completely new and fresh. Talk about pushing the musical envelope!
They used to open with this song I beleive in 1968 at clubs such as the Whisky a Go Go before their first album was released...the musical maturity and talent is truly mindblowing for a starting band,Bonham is on FIRE!!!... the whole band is on FIRE...lol!
Agree it's a great, incredible in places performance. But Zep didn't play the Whiskey until '69 and I don't think, anywhere in the U.S. until that time.
@@alexkx8599 It's one of my very favourite soul records, really great, very collectable single, and also it was covered by The Who's Roger Daltrey back in 2018. The Who had covered Mimms twice before in '65, once on record (Anytime You Want Me, b side of US editions of Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere single) and live they used to do a version of Tell Me Baby.
Blistering. Page was incredible between 1969-1973. His rhythm playing and dynamics set him apart from fellow legends like Blackmore and Beck. He definitely had his own vision
@ I agree! He was fantastic in the studio his entire career. But live he started to fade around 1975 in my opinion he was still great a lot, but something was missing in some of the shows particularly his raw energy and fluidity
I've been a Zep fan since I was 14, am 70 now, have never heard this before, how many more obscure recordings are out there? We need to set up a youtube site for these. Somebody computer literate do this please.
Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac released an incredible song with a lot of this feel sound and riff called 'The Green Manalishi' about six months after this. Judas Priest covered that. These musicians all learned from each other. A good version can be found on Mick Fleetwood's Peter Green tribute CD/DVD with ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons on lead. This version of the song never quite made it onto vinyl which is a shame as it rocks. The early Zeppelin sets were loaded with all sorts of things as they only had one album of their own stuff at that point. Zeppelin would have known the Garnet Mimms version and built on that. great song have a listen. This also added to the imperative to expand the numbers they had. Good example Dazed and Confused. Good post thanks!
When I saw them a week later in May '69, Jimmy was going between his Les Paul (new for him at the time) and his Telecaster. This sounds more like his Les Paul than his Telecaster. Just my opinion, but there is a certain "crunch" to this sound that his Tele didn't get live.

I've never heard this Zeppelin track before. It has various parts like numerous songs in one. I like it and I am still listening to it. It's almost 10 minutes so they were able to cover a lot of ground.
Phenomenal, unparalleled, masterful, super exceptional, other worldly, unimaginable incomprehensible capabilities, pioneering, uncompromising, top of their game changing, from another realm, unequivocal sonic moment of zen.

The riff at 8:50 sounds like the riff in “cats squirrel” which was done by cream, jethro Tull, blodwyn pig at around the same time. I wonder if jimmy was listening to them and influenced by Clapton and mick Abrahams
I can understand why they didn't do this one ! Robert's voice is amazing but this must have shredded it! Doubt he could have done this at this level even a few years later

While the Fillmore West show from the 27th. is better sounding, I slightly prefer the version of this jam piece from the Winterland show the day earlier on the 26th. Though not as better sounding. In those early years I feel they had a lot more adventure in their shows. Before their play list became pat.
