(Partial) Marty Stuart at the 2018 Targhee Bluegrass Festival

  • An added note due to lots of comments re: the crowd size. Be aware that at Targhee, camping is close and often the crowd filters in when the band goes on. Plus, Marty got an unfortunate 1:30 time slot and with lots of late night campground jamming, some get up at the crack of noon. Rest assured the crowd did fill in quite nicely and the stage area wasn't this sparse-looking for long.
Here's Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives at the 2018 Targhee Bluegrass Festival on Sunday, August 12th. He played a 1:30 time slot and if there's one this about this recorder, it's hard to see the screen shot in bright light and you'll see me using my hat for shade to try and get things right. Unfortunately, I thought I had more disk space and it got full and cut off after 33 minutes or so. Believe me, I'm more disappointed than you. But 33 minutes of this kick-ass show is better than none so here's that. Check out Marty's tour dates and stuff at www.martystuart.net/ Go see them! This video was recorded by The Slickrock Stranger on a Canon VIXIA HF R700. Visit the website, check out the music and photos, and see more videos at www.slickrockstranger.com/

I agree 100% Kenny Vaughan and Marty Stuart play incredibly well together. Both can rock it and both can chicken pick with the best of them. Hansom Harry and Chris Scruggs are also top shelf. What a band!

If he would use Pedal Steel Guitars in his band (as he did on his TV show), he WOULD sound MORE like country. But of course they hate "pedals". End of story. Yes MOST guitar players hate Pedal Steel Guitars. So sad.

@@MrPatdeeee Marty has Clarence Whites Telecaster, the original "b bender" guitar and can make it sound like a pedal steel. Kenny Vaughn does the same thing using bends and volume control on his guitar. Chris Scruggs, the bass player and Earl Scruggs son is one of the best pedal steel guitar players out there, along with being an outstanding upright bass player
This band is COUNTRY and a whole lot more. When they talk about "hating" pedals, it had nothing to do with pedal steel guitars. It was Kenny Vaughn talking about not needing to use EFX pedals. He and Marty both use their Fender amps and their knowledge of tone and amp effects to achieve the sound they want

@@michaelwalser9497 Thank you Michael for your kind response to my comment. And I agree with it 100%; with one caveat...
While "Telecasters", etc, can mimic /;Pedal Steel Guitars/;; MOST of them know that nothing can produce the total sound of a PSG. IE...
...Every musical instrument has different "Overtones" . And NO regular guitar; or any other instrument; can produce totally what PSG's can, etc, and vice-versa.
Further: Untold people have espoused adamantly; that the PSG produces the most beautiful music in history. Proof...Marty's wife "Connie Smith" became the "Queen of the Pedal Steel Guitar" in the world of "Country Music". For from her first recording; using "Weldon Myrick"; and he played on her recordings; during the time that Connie was rising to Famous. And she would echo that if you asked her, I'm sure.
Not to mention that she is using now; one of THE greatest PSG players ever. AKA: "Gary Carter". AND Marty used him all the time when he played "country" on his show. Oh yes. But he did not use him when they did not play country. Why? They KNOW why...So do producers and directors and singers etc.
Even Chet Atkins hated the PSG; because he could not get that sound; out of his guitars. So he would rarely ever use a PSG in his band. Oh indeed. And untold players did the same thing; because they were jealous; that turns into hatred.
And that began with Web Pierce rising to famous; after his SG player "Bud Isaacs" put pedals on his guitar, on "Slowly". And the whole world of Country music went crazy to hear "that" sound. Believe it or not.
I said all the above kind Sir; to say this: Without a Pedal Steel Guitar in the band; IT is NOT "true" Country today. And if you ask Marty; I believe he would echo that too.
Finally: I would like to send you a gift; that is the LAST printed book; called "The Evolution of the Pedal Steel Guitar"; totally free, including the shipment; to you anywhere in the contiguous USA; and here is my....you know...pat d....(4 E's instead of 2) and add "y" plus you know.

Michael, I do hope you can see Marty live, too. I saw him and the Superlatives Oct 2021 ~ truly one of the happiest experiences of my life ~~ it meant THAT much to see them. In May, I purchased flights, a hotel room and tickets to spend 2 days in Nashville to see Marty’s Late Night Jam @the Ryman ~~ sure enough I caught Covid June 2 and couldn’t go. I was so bummed out. But I hope to go next year (note: for a relatively small fee I’d purchased ticket insurance, so the tours I’d booked, Marty’s show, and Carrie Underwood @ the Grand Old Opry we’re refunded to me). That helped a lot. I was sick as a dog for 10 days with respiratory stuff, coughing (I have very mild asthma). But I have a smart primary physician who helped me recover; I didn’t need to go to the hospital and I didn’t die.
Check out Marty’s website to learn when he will be near you. I saw him 2 1/2 hrs away from my house and needed to spend the night in a hotel. Best wishes on your dream!
