Fox Shock Noise - Float X2, My Experience

  • Not a noise you want to hear coming from any shock, but it is repairable! This noise started randomly when I was riding down my local woods. Not only did the shock sound horrible but the rebound became inconsistent. This noise happened both in firm and open compression mode.
After a short call with Fox UK, they suggested I send the shock back to Fox to be inspected and hopefully fixed. I sent the shock back to Fox and had it back within a week (posted Friday and had it back the next Wednesday) working as it was, when the shock was new.
I was told by Fox that the shock had cavitated and needed a new seal to fix the issue. I was not told which seal this was but I was told a few different things could cause this issue. I was also told a thorough service will sometimes solve this problem but it’s hard to say without the shock being inspected. Luckily my shock was in warranty and only cost me the postage to post the shock to Fox. At the time of making this video a full service from Fox would have cost £120 (UK GBP) and this includes the return postage. By the sounds of things this unfortunately isn’t something most people will be able to do at home and in most cases sending your shock to Fox will be the best option.
I hope this helps a little but if you have any questions please stick them down below and I will do my best to answer them.

Had exactly the same issue (cavitation... oil and air mixed) at the beginning of spring this year. Just a few days within warranty. Serviced the top part myself, but didn't have the tools or experience to get into the lower inners. Fox (Silverfish) sorted it for me, although they were busy back then and took around month. My brand new X2 made the same noise. I just thought it was normal for that shock, until I did a bike demo last weekend. I immediately took my bike to my LBS and it was ready the next day. Unfortunately I had to eat the cost of the rebuild, but I was only without my bike for a day. 2 of my local bike shops said that see this issue all the time, even on brand new bikes with the X2. Fox needs to issue a recall.

have this happening on my 2021 x2 and recently in my 2021 DPX2 / took apart the DPX2 ( similar IFP ,internal floating piston , ) and it def had aerated fluid , 90% of the time it’s either the IFP seal that gets overheated and dries out/ leaks air into the oil ( the ifp piggy back is where most of the heat goes in these shocks ) or the seals towards the bottom of the main fluid piston towards the air spring side ( not as likely ) . Using some slick honey / or sram butter on the IFP and other sliding seals hells extend the life A LOT longer in addition to the squirt of float fluid or 4WT they call for during assembly . My newer 2023 X2 seems to have updated seals and more lubrication on it / did a full tear down to inspect the IFP and modify the travel to fit my Capra , so hopefully it’s becoming solved now .

Thank you for doing thus video. I have the same issues. My rockshox Sid dual air makes the squishy water sound with grinding at the same time. The sounds vibrated through my hollow carbon TREK YSL frame as if it was coming inside the frame.i really thought there was water or oil inside the frame 🤣 Funny things about carbon frames. It soakes up any vibration and amplifies it within. I took my extra fox coil shocks and replace it. The sound went away.... so the culprit is the CAVITATION in the shock like the owner of this video have mentioned. I'm so glad I found his video. Thank you very much.

Hello 👋 Thank you for sharing this. Unfortunately this does seem to be a common theme - shocks not lasting long after a service before making this noise again.
If the rebound and overall performance is consistent and unaffected. Then I would save your money and just use the shock as it is 😊 I know the noise is annoying but if the performance is the same then I would just use it.
