Yukon Bound - Alaska Highway Overlanding Adventure Ep.1
Driving to the Yukon, we used a Toyota 4Runner to haul an off-road trailer. My wife Tori and I were totally self-sufficient, hauling a place to camp, cook and eat with outfitting in tow. We were totally off-grid for five days on this cross Canada road trip. Winter Overlanding across a country known for winter had us feeling a little nervous, particularly because we were bringing our toddler Wesley with us. Camping with kids has its challenges. In the episode, we pass the Lake Superior north shore and stop at Old Woman Bay where there are some surreal ice formations. Once in the Yukon, we'd say in an off-grid log cabin while exploring the surrounding mountains for a couple weeks before moving on to other adventures in the territory. Never the less, a great adventure was had.

The shots of the bay and the slush water; and longer videos are always better! Love the contemplation and nature show. It's just great to see you and the family out and about. Very heart warming.
My favorite part is that you are back with a new adventure. However, I love the Northeast shore of Superior. So many people miss the beauty of the lake in the winter. The offroad camper was awesome. It was good to see Wesley smiling.

My rule in the winter is if possible never go under 1/2 a tank cause you never know !!!!

Yep, I was always told never let your tank get below a half a tank especially in winter. Not sure with ethanol gas now but by following this rule it helps prevent condensation in your tank and thus a frozen fuel line.
Hmm. My rule is when it goes into the red I don't need to worry for 80km.

When you travel the Alaska highway you gas up anytime you can after you hit half full..A lot of the gas stations there are not open during winter months, some close October till May

You probably have another 80km after the empty mark... not to worry.
In May 1993 I drove from south Florida to Fairbanks Alaska in my Honda CRX. It was a 6,400 mile road trip. 1/4 th of the distance around the world.
That’s a heck of a long haul

That sped up road travel was hypnotic. When you guys were feeding Wesley eggs, I kept smelling eggs ( scent-a-vision?) My wife was frying up eggs at egg xactky the same time. Weird how things like that happen. Back to the adventure....who planned the additional gas cans on top? Be honest.....I got your stove in Gaspe. I’m like a groupie picking up collectibles. That gas stove sounds like a jet engine from a certain angle. Looks like a cool trip yall. When did you do this?
It said February 2012 at the very beginning. I'm guessing that's a typo and it's 2021.

What’s this peanut butter and jelly that’s in the US it’s peanut butter and jam especially north of Superior. 👍🇨🇦 I lived in Schreiber for over 10 years and loved it . My wife hates black fly’s so we moved to the Bruce Peninsula. I still miss the north and the amazing fishing and canoeing. Cheers guys 🇨🇦👍
That’s funny, you’re right. What the heck is jelly anyways? Ya the Bruce is beautiful but no crown and all farms. Superior and the country around there is amazing the fishing alone makes it worthwhile. Thanks a lot for watching
I’ve made that trip many times...I was born in Watson Lake Yukon Terr....When I lived in Beaverlodge AB...I made a trip to Whitehorse in 87 and they were just starting to pave sections of the highway...I’m it’s a much better drive now....Good luck with other adventures.
Cool, ya we obviously passed through Watson and it seemed like a nice place. I’ve heard it has been slowly straitened out too which makes more of the views longer but you don’t get as many different changing views as when it was more winding

where did your gas come from? , it looked like water coming out of the can you sure can get gas that clean anywhere around where I live ( southwest Ohio).
Really? Thought this was pretty standard. Got it at a local gas station in Ontario.
Just stop at Canadian tire and get a boot put in your tire or replace it. You will be screwed if you get another flat. Safety first. Cheers 🇨🇦👍

If you put your cap under your spout as to where your pouring it into the funnel it has no choice but to hit the funnel and stay there in place and you don't have to worry about it falling down and hitting your fuel as you're trying to fill it try that you'll be surprised and how well that works
Sounds interesting but I’m not sure I understand quite what you’re explaining
Note. Running on empty fuel causes stress on fuel system and pump. Fuel pumps fail on empty tanks more than full tanks.
Indeed, in a deist lid can break the pump. We refilled when we were low but it didn’t run out if gas

Yes, I did break my neck when I was 19. Was in a halo for 2.5 months. Was in a race for the puck with the goalie Andover to chip it past him but I didn’t realize the goalie had also dove a split second after me and I crashed into him skating full speed, top of my head first

Amazing how you can just look off into the water and think, what an amazing life you have. You guys are truly blessed. Such a beautiful family. My absolute favorite outdoor adventurer's.

You know your wife is a trooper. If you keep up with good maintenence and a bit of TLC...she will be as reliable as a Toyota. She might be a bit expensive to start, but over time she will be a bargain👍🤣
egg stuck because too much salt cleaning and not enough oil to cook in the skillet...also too high temp....high temp makes it stick harder in a skillet.
i wanna suggest "Outdoor Chef Life" as a collab.....if you can coax him in...i think a nice family video would be good....jocelyn and taku are amazing chefs....a mexicali chef and a sushi chef....who like to camp and cook..... :P taku only really knows sea fishing...he will need teaching ;) jocelyn can trout fish ;)

I feel like everyone who drives Hwy 17 north of the Sault to Wawa have mini panic attacks about fuel. There is a BIG sign you'll see that says something along the lines "This is the last gas station till Wawa".
I like to make that drive every year (this year pending) to do some backpacking. I hope you stopped in White River to take a picture of Winnie the Pooh with your son. :)

@@JimBairdAdventurer I did a road trip to go camp with my buddy in Saskatchewan, and had to take a pretty similar route from here in Toronto area to get there (though mine was during summer and in a Mazda 3). Had to get an oil change right before I left, and had to get one when I got back!

I have driven my Toyota Tacoma until it said please refuel now...made it to the nearest gas station open at 4am, it's an 80L tank only pumped 74L into it, I figure I have 10L reserve or less after my 30km empty light comes on

You're not alone. I ran out of gas West of the SOO one spring driving to Vancouver!!! A kind trucker picked me up and dropped me a the next gas station.

You can tell it wasn't right from the 4runner gen. That model wasn't available till at least 2015.

September when I went south there was only 1 gas pump open between Thunderbay and Sault ste Marie at night and it was in Marathon. I've driven between Wawa and Nipigon an never met another car for over 4 hours one winter. That's why I have an Aliarc bumper and 9" spot lights on my truck.
Love the work... thank you for sharing... sheep mountain and kluane lake are amazing... camping at the arctic research institute at the south end of kluane lake is, well, free and the beach rocks...

Well finally able to sit and watch these episodes, such epic views of north shore superior , Wawa and Old women Bay simply gorgeous, What a great family trip Westley is so cute . Love that trailer wow how handy that must have been love it!. Darn I hate when snow comes down like that especially In the middle of nowhere, It is blinding. Mmmm eggs and sausage , Flat tire with a bolt in it that would suck.
Gas would be much cheaper in the Salt than WaWa . Hope you replaced that tire before you went much farther. 😬 cheers good luck. 🇨🇦👍
Why, oh, why would anyone travel on the highways of N BC and Yukon in the dark?! Try meeting one of those bison or a moose, twice the size of that bison, in the dark. Be safe out there, park it before dark!

If you want the best gas mileage it should be about 90 km/hr. Unless you have a very aerodynamic vehicle.
The amount of commercials in this makes it unwatchable. Why would TH-cam put so many in a video like this

The north shore of Lake Superior is one of our happy places. But we have never been there in winter.
