    Jim Baird: Yukon Bound - Alaska Highway Overlanding Adventure - E. 2 - The Great Plains to Mile 0
    In the episode, we cross the Great Planes, see moose, run into some interesting weather and come up with an even more interesting camping spot before we push on to Mile 0 of the Alaska Highway. Driving to the Yukon, we used a Toyota 4Runner to haul an off-road trailer. My wife Tori and I were totally self-sufficient, hauling a place to camp, cook, and eat with outfitting in tow. We were totally off-grid for five days on this cross-Canada road trip. Winter Overlanding across a country known for winter had us feeling a little nervous, particularly because we were bringing our toddler Wesley with us. Camping with kids has its challenges. Once in the Yukon, we'd say in an off-grid log cabin while exploring the surrounding mountains for a couple weeks before moving on to other adventures in the territory. Nevertheless, a great adventure was had.

    Jim. I love watching your hard core adventures, but I must admit that I am following Tori’s adventures too. She is an amazing woman. If I had her self confidence when I was her age, I might actually have become that forest ranger I wanted to be. At 75, I think it is a bit too late now. I want the three of you to stay safe up there in Alaska. 😊

One thing, as a tried and true camper-van road-tripper I have to ask, why didn't you guys travel in a motor home or camper van with a stovetop, furnace, etc.. so you can cook inside in all weather and no trailer ? Anyway, keep up the great adventures, I'm a fan for life. Tori's a trooper and Wesley's gettin his good road legs ! Much love and safe travel !

    • @JimBairdAdventurer

    If you are overlanding or long distance driving, especially up there, you need a bottle jack in that rig.
    Another good idea is the trailer tires/wheels need to be compatible with the rig
    Cool adventure 👍

    Love the kitchen area have to build one for my jeep. When you change a tire never put your hands between the fender above and the tire always keep your hands at 4 oclock and 8 oclock at the bottom of the tire to be safe. Never trust a jack.

    I'm amazed by this odd trailer. It's probably my lacking ability to think in the box, but why??? You lug a trailer across half the wrstern hemisphere and it has all kinds of fancy luxuries. But it lacks basic functions. You can't stand, poo, cook inside the heated trailer to start with. You can argue the trailer is so low for aerodynamic reasons. But then you plaster it with all kinds of square boxes in the sides and top, not to mention the wheel covers.! And an outside mounted gas tank to boot! I always thought road safety was a North American invention... Anywhere in Europe this trailer would be seized and Jimmy fined for this gas tank on the outside. But yeah, that's Europe, we don't understand the concept of road safety here. 😁 Anyway, I enjoy watching your adventures. Thanks Jimmy, for the entertainment.

    • @JimBairdAdventurer
      @JimBairdAdventurer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, you’re welcome. The law here is that they need to be mounted on the outside. Jerry cans too are technical illegal to carry inside your vehicle. The reason for the smaller trailer is it’s way way cheaper in fuel to haul, it’s better at off tossing and for winter hauling, it’s way easier to heat, you can get it into tighter spots and turn around much easier. It’s also easier to park and drip if you want to explore just with the vehicle. It’s more like camping too. There is actually a large culture of Overlanding and many people who prefer these types of trailers to the ones your describe as they’re more rugged and practice etc.

    A small chordless impact and some impact sockets would be a game changer. I always use mine for our RV for the stabilizers and bring my floor jack. The stuff that auto makers supplies works but not so 💩 hot. My wife and I went 2x from Brantford to Cloverdale BC. Yup, Ontario is big. I figure from Kingston to the Manitoba Border, 3 days for sane drivers.

    Never ever close a folding knife after cutting something acidic like a tomato without wiping it down thoroughly (preferably rinsing it with water) That's a fast way to encourage discoloration, oxidation, and rust. Tomatoes and citrus are really hard on knife steel.

    How does your son do with the long driving ? We have 3 children 2 with special needs my wife thinks it’s to much for them to go 4 to 5 hours at a stretch in a car seat I beg to differ isn’t that what going on a adventure is about ? Thanks

    • @JimBairdAdventurer
      @JimBairdAdventurer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He did great but he is pretty chill. He also can’t walk or crawl so he’s siting a lot of the time anyways or on his tummy on the floor where he can move around some. So, I wonder if he’s actually better than a typical child on drives like this. He seemed very content a lot of the time and just played with his toys. We’d pull him out at stops and walk around with him and play with him in the trailer at night etc.
